Mary Jane

Marvel officially kills off beloved character, shocking long-time fans
Goblin
Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) has reached new heights that not even the wall-crawler himself is able to surpass when climbing the Empire State Building. The beloved comic book series has made us laugh and enjoy as Peter raises his two kids next to Mary Jane while often suiting up to save the city. So far, everything has worked perfectly fine for the man who puts his life on the line to save others. However, there's one common element shared across every beloved Spider-Man story, and it is that tragedy always finds its way into the hero's life.

This iteration of the web-slinger has never been alone when fighting the criminals that threaten New York City. His best friend, Harry Osborn, is also quick to put on the Green Goblin armor and fly into action too. But while the two heroes have the same goal in mind, Harry thinks killing the supervillains should be the way to go,...

Spider-Man: No Way Home Concept Art Shows a 'Down on His Luck' Vulture
Image
Concept art for Spider-Man: No Way Home from Josh Nizzi sees the return of The Vulture. However, the artwork shows that Adrian Toomes has seen better days.

Shared onto Instagram, the pieces in the upload show The Vulture hovering in a blank background, though a quick look shows that he now sports a grungier pair of wings, both of which get their own slide. Also present are what look like a blade and a gun on The Vulture's wrists. Lastly, the final slide shows The Vulture with new headgear instead of his helmet. In the description, Nizzi wrote, "A Vulture take I did for No Way Home that would have him down on his luck working at a junk yard."

Zendaya Recalls Spider-Man Co-Star Tom Holland Getting Her Out of a Ticket
Image
Peter Parker's loved ones rarely benefitted from people who discover Spider-Man's true identity. Zendaya reveals one incident with Tom Holland that proved the opposite.

Zendaya recalls a recent experience with Tom Holland that could easily be a scene from any of their Spider-Man movies. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the Challengers actor was asked if she ever received a speeding ticket or a moving violation; Zendaya said she hadn't but remembered one incident when she would have if not for Holland. It turns out there was one car trip where she was technically going over the speed limit, and police even flagged her down for it. But when they approached the vehicle and discovered who she was with, they immediately decided to give her a free pass.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy Totally Failed Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane
Image
In the very first scene of 2002's Spider-Man, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) tells us in a voice-over that this is a story about a girl. For the following five years, we as viewers sort of let ourselves believe that Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) played an important role in the much-appreciated Sam Raimi trilogy. However, as time passed and we – aka the general audience – started to reevaluate female representation in movies, it became easy to see that Peter lied. The first Spider-Man trilogy wasn’t about Mary Jane at all. Arguably, it was about everything but her.

Challengers Is Banking On Zendaya's Star Power To Become A Box Office Hit
Image
Zendaya has, in just a small handful of years, asserted herself as a true A-list star in Hollywood. So much focus is paid to actors in their 40s (or much older) such as Tom Cruise, one of the many famous people named Chris, or Anne Hathaway. But Zendaya has emerged as one of our new movie stars, thanks to her work in wildly successful franchises such as "Dune" and "Spider-Man." But can her star power help turn "Challengers," an original sports drama centered around tennis, into a hit? That's the big question MGM is asking right now as the movie gets ready to make its way to theaters next weekend.

Hailing from "Call Me By Your Name" director Luca Guadagnino, "Challengers" is eyeing an opening between $7 and $12 million, per Box Office Pro. The only other big release on April 26 is Lionsgate's Christian drama "Unsung Hero." Yes, faith-based movies have...

Spider-Man: How Peter Parker's Tray Catch Scene Was Filmed
Image
Tobey Maguire's incredible tray catch in Spider-Man was a 156-take wonder, showing Peter Parker's impressive reflexes without CGI magic. The iconic lunch-catching scene in Spider-Man demonstrates the balance between Peter's high school life and developing superpowers. Sam Raimi insisted on keeping the tray catch scene in Spider-Man, showing the dedication and effort that went into this memorable moment.

The superhero genre has a lot to thank Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man for, including one of the most iconic scenes in any superhero movie that wasn’t computer-generated – it was all thanks to Tobey Maguire’s skills. In 2002, Peter Parker made the jump to the big screen in the first of many modern live-action Spider-Man movies, directed by Sam Raimi and with Tobey Maguire as the title character. The film was a critical and financial success, making way for two sequels and being credited for redefining the modern superhero genre as well as the summer blockbuster.

This 'Spider-Man' Scene Took 156 Takes To Get Right
Image
Although fellow Marvel alum X-Men beat the web-slinger to the silver screen by two years, in 2002, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man at long last brought the wildly popular Marvel character to life on the big screen. Raimi's epic flick remains a cornerstone of superhero cinema, and really kicked the current Golden Age of superhero films into high gear. One of the many memorable scenes in the film occurs shortly after Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) gets his powers. It happens in the school cafeteria and starts with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) slipping on some spilled juice. Peter not only prevents Mary Jane from hitting the floor but catches all the food that went flying on the tray as they fall back down. One would assume that the amazing feat was the result of some impressive CGI, only it wasn't. That was all Tobey Maguire! And it only took 156 takes.

The Spider-Man 3 Scene That Tobey Maguire Originally Refused to Do
Image
There is a lot that can be and has been said about the dance scenes in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Little of it has been positive in the 17(!) years since the movie’s release. Undeniably leaning into the director’s goofier comic sensibility, the film twice detours from its dour tone—which begins when Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) dons the bad juju vibes of an alien symbiote—in order to have a laugh-out-loud dance break. In one sequence near the end of the second act, and after Peter has permanently scarred and attempted to kill his Bff (James Franco), Maguire’s protagonist struts down the streets of New York City to James Brown. The strut then becomes a full on disco-like routine after he upgrades to an all-black suit.

Several minutes later, Spider-Man 3 further ups the camp factor by seeing symbiote-influenced Peter attempt to make Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst...

Spider-Man: Every Peter Parker Love Interest In The Comics
Image
Spider-Man had a variety of love interests, from Gwen Stacy to Black Cat and even Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers being a surprisingly strong love interest). Peter Parker's relationships were complicated by his superhero duties, with many girlfriends unable to tolerate his time away from them to fight crime. Spider-Man's most tragic relationship was with Gwen Stacy, whose death in his arms at the hands of Green Goblin marked a major turning point in his life.

Despite his perennial bad luck, Spider-Man has had many love interests. Peter Parker gained his powers when he was a teenager and then had to figure out how to become a superhero at a young age. But he also had another predicament to escape from -- he was a nerd, an outcast, and a self-professed wallflower. Once he gained powers, though, he slowly gained confidence and eventually ended up dating girls who never gave him a second look before.

“It might have been more, actually”: Tobey Maguire’s No Way Home Salary May be Way Higher Than We Originally Thought, According to Spider-Man Co-Star
Image
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man ushered in an age of popularity for comic book movies that had never been seen on screen before. Helmed by Sam Raimi, with Kirsten Dunst playing Mary Jane Watson opposite Maguire’s Peter Parker, the film was an unprecedented hit. The film’s success meant that the studio immediately greenlit a sequel.

The leading actors returned to reprise their roles, and it also saw Maguire’s demand rise, since it had boosted his fame. Unsurprisingly, there was a pretty significant difference in the salaries of both protagonists. It is not far-fetched to believe he also pocketed a hefty check to star in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Kirsten Dunst Reveals the One Superhero Movie She's Watched Since Spider-Man 3
Image
Kirsten Dunst memorably played Mary Jane in all three of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, culminating with 2007's Spider-Man 3. She hasn't since kept up with Marvel releases, but as a mother, she did see a recent superhero film, though it wasn't from either Marvel or DC.

In a new interview with Variety, Dunst admitted that she didn't watch The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, nor did she watch any of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films --- such as No Way Home, which brought back some of her co-stars from the original trilogy. Beyond that, Dunst said she hasn't watched any Marvel movie since wrapping up her run playing Mary Jane. However, she did see a certain children's film that spoofed the superhero genre by imagining the characters of a Nickelodeon show as superhero pups.

Spider-Man's Controversial Mary Jane Cover Gets New Update for 2024
Image
J. Scott Campbell has revealed a new cover for Ultimate Spider-Man #4, showing Peter and Mj with their kids. The art references Campbell's cover for Amazing Spider-Man #601, which was criticized for over-sexualizing Mary Jane Watson. Campbell has revisited the art numerous times since, and engaged with criticisms by redrawing the piece while defending various choices.

As Marvel launches its new Ultimate Spider-Man comic series, the publisher is revisiting perhaps the hero's most controversial cover, showing how life has changed for Peter and Mj since 2009. The new cover shows how different the iconic couple's life is in a world where Pete didn't become Spider-Man in his teens.

As recently announced on Instagram by artist J. Scott Campbell, select issues of Ultimate Spider-Man #4 will feature an homage of Campbell's art for Amazing Spider-Man #601. The original image shows Mary Jane sitting on the couple's shared couch, looking mournful as - through the window...

Kirsten Dunst Recalls How Spider-Man Producers Wanted to Change Her Appearance
Image
Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. She was 18 years old when she started filming and 20 when the first film premiered, and the actress just revealed the studio wasn't very happy with her image at the time.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, Kirsten Dunst recalled how Spider-Man producers wanted to change her appearance. The actress has been in the industry since she was three years old, and her acting credits included many roles before 2002's Spider-Man, such as 1994's Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, where she played the young vampire Claudia, 1995's Jumanji, where she played Judy, and Sophia Coppola's 1999's The Virgin Suicides, where she played Lux. Despite being an established actress, her look could've been improved, according to Spider-Man's producers.

Kirsten Dunst Would've Returned as Mary Jane in Spider-Man: No Way Home
Image
Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane in the original Spider-Man films and revealed she would've returned to her role in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home if they had asked her. The superhero film, starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man, was a massive success at the box office. Partly because, due to the multiverse, Holland's Spider-Man was able to interact with the two previous actors who took on the role.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, Kirsten Dunst has addressed her role in superhero movies, something she has brought up quite a lot in recent weeks. The actress started acting when she was three years old and has tackled a wide range of roles, culminating with her Academy Award nomination for 2021's The Power of the Dog. However, her role as Mary Jane is one of her career-defining roles. Although the trilogy ended over a decade and a half ago, she would still be willing to reprise her role.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 Is A Box Office Gamble Too Good Not To Take
Image
22 years ago, Sam Raimi helped prove just how big superhero movies could be with his first "Spider-Man" movie. Starring Tobey Maguire, the film broke box office records and kicked off the biggest individual superhero franchise around. Raimi and Maguire united for two more movies, with 2007's "Spider-Man 3" rounding out the trilogy with mixed results. The original plan was for the two to reunite on a fourth film that never came to pass. Instead, Sony opted to reboot the series with Andrew Garfield headlining "The Amazing Spider-Man" films. But everything old is new again. Recently, talk of "Spider-Man 4" kicked up and, while nothing has been made official, the time feels right. Truthfully, it might be a now or never situation.

To be clear, much of the talk surrounding a proposed "Spider-Man 4" is generated almost entirely from the rumor mill and appears to be based on next to nothing concrete.

Kirsten Dunst Admits She Has Never Seen ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ But Would Gladly Reprise Her Role as Mary Jane Watson

Whether you prefer Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s performance as Mary Jane in Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy is widely respected. It’s her most successful movie financially so far.

Kirsten Dunst Urges Tobey Maguire to Return as Spider-Man to Explore Peter Parker’s Romance With Mary Jane in a Different Kind of Superhero Movie

Kirsten Dunst was too honest when she admitted that money was part of the reason why she appeared in Spider-Man in 2002. While she claimed money was the reason actors mostly took up superhero projects, she also believed Sam Raimi’s movie was very different from modern superhero films. She felt that Raimi’s movies were indie films disguised as superhero films, which is what she would want if another Spider-Man movie were made.

Rumors always seem to be swirling on social media that Sam Raimi is going to reunite with Tobey Maguire and direct a fourth “Spider-Man” movie. The duo jump-started a blockbuster age for comic book movies with 2002’s “Spider-Man” and delivered the genre one of its most acclaimed entries with 2004’s “Spider-Man 2.” Although 2007’s “Spider-Man 3” wasn’t a hit with critics, it still pulled in $895 million worldwide to become Raimi and Maguire’s biggest entry.

There was a time when Raimi was developing a “Spider-Man 4” at Sony, with Tobey Maguire back in the title role. The project was ultimately scrapped in favor of rebooting the web-slinger on the big screen with Andrew Garfield. Ever since Maguire returned to his Spider-Man role in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” comic book movie fans have been clamoring for a proper “Spider-Man 4” from Raimi and his star.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,...
