Matt Latham
Introducing the Film Stories Podcast Network, with over 30 shows
Matt Latham
We’re thrilled to announce that over 30 new podcasts are joining the Film Stories family. More information right here.

Right at the infancy of Film Stories, nearly six years ago, it was an individual podcast that kicked things off. The Film Stories with Simon Brew podcast is now nearing its 400th episode, while Film Stories magazine has just made it to issue 50. Across live events, print magazines, videos and audio, it’s been the podcast that was the catalyst for it all.

Now, we’re excited to announce that podcasts are to become an even bigger part of the Film Stories family. The already-successful We Made This network of film and television podcasts is, going forward, now the Film Stories Podcast Network. And here’s the list of the programmes that are instantly adding hundreds of thousands of downloads a month to the Film Stories world…

Ronnie Leatherman's Final The First 48 Episode Resonates
Image
The retirement of Ronnie Leatherman marks the end of an era for The First 48. Leatherman's dedication and empathy were evident throughout his career, as highlighted in the flashbacks to his investigation of the murder of Ben Montgomery. His final episode highlighted the qualities that made him a relatable and admirable figure among fans of The First 48.

The following contains spoilers for The First 48 Season 24, Episode 4, "Unforgotten: Ben," which debuted Thursday, Oct. 12 on A&e.

The Ronnie Leatherman era of The First 48 is formally over -- and the A&e series won't ever be the same. Season 24, Episode 4, "Unforgotten: Ben" focused on a now-retired Leatherman discussing one of his open cases with Detective Lacy Lansdown. While it didn't come as a surprise since Leatherman's retirement from Tulsa Homicide was made public in 2022, the episode served as the on-screen send-off for one of The First 48's most well-known and beloved detectives... and highlighted the reasons for his popularity.

The First 48's Dave Walker, Brandon Watkins Break a TV Cliche
Image
The First 48 debunks common TV crime drama stereotypes because it has a less procedural focus than most true crime series. Sergeant Dave Walker and Lieutenant Brandon Watkins demonstrate different leadership styles that have each contributed to the success and growth of Tulsa Homicide. Walker and Watkins prove that their corresponding crime drama archetypes are outdated.

There are dozens of popular TV procedurals -- and then there's The First 48. Being a true crime series, the A&e show is obviously very different from the countless fictional versions of homicide detectives. Yet that difference is not just that one is scripted and the other one isn't. The First 48 has been able to highlight some of crime dramas' common tropes simply by raising awareness about how homicide really works. One of the most noticeable is the one that Tulsa Homicide supervisors Sergeant Dave Walker and Lieutenant Brandon Watkins regularly put to shame.

Tulsa is...

The First 48's John Brown and Mark Kennedy Are TV's Lethal Weapon
Image
The lengthy relationship A&e's The First 48 has with the Tulsa Police Department has enabled the series to explore aspects of law enforcement that no other true crime show has covered. Tulsa deserves credit for helping to expand the public's view on policing, and that principally comes from the conduct and personality of their detectives. There's no shortage of experienced officers being shown on TV -- it's how Tulsa Homicide does their jobs and who they are as people that makes them the class of a crowded field.

One of the angles that Tulsa has given viewers insight into is the long-term realities of policing. Scripted procedurals and unscripted series alike have painted an idea of the veteran cop as a cynical, world-weary officer either detached from or worn down by the job. They're dour, they're predictable and they're just not that interesting. But that's not the case with Tulsa...

Who Were the Real Life Daisy Jones & The Six?
Image
This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six. Details about the real life band they were inspired by may lightly spoil future events in the show.

The Prime Video series Daisy Jones & the Six is an adaptation of the 2017 book by author Taylor Jenkins Reid. The novel tells the story of a fictional 1970s California rock group who break through when a charismatic songwriting female lead vocalist grabs the mic. The identity of the group’s real-life counterpart is very thinly veiled. The tagline of the series proclaims “Their music made them famous. Their breakup made them legends.” They can’t be talking about the Beatles, who were legends before they split. Fleetwood Mac, however, sustained multiple breakups before the ensemble even thought about calling it quits.

Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley, plays Daisy Jones. While the young singer’s uncaring upper-class roots contradict the connection,...

Bring Back the Light: 50 Years of Midnight Movies at the Electric Notting Hill
In the 21st century, London has a “night tube” and bills itself as a 24-hour, always-on city, in imitation of New York. Before the legendary Scala cinema at Kings Cross in the 1980s, there were other cinemas in London that were open all night, especially the Electric film club in Notting Hill, which has its 50th anniversary this year. Copying the midnight movie theatres which they read about in the underground press, especially The Elgin in New York’s West Village, London’s hippie venues provided nocturnal oases for the revolutionaries, radicals, hermits, hedonists, black magicians and black marketeers, the seekers after truth, the transients, anarchists, freaks and malingerers of the Seventies counterculture, all adrift in the city at night. The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream—Alexandra Palace, April 29th, 1967. Still from Peter Whitehead's Tonite Let's All Make Love In London (1967).“There was this cinema on the Portobello Road, the Electric Cinema,...
