Hello Kitty Creators Reveal the Sanrio Icon Is Not a Cat

New comments from a senior Sanrio executive have proven controversial, revealing that the popular Hello Kitty isn't a kitten at all. Her lore is re-examined in her milestone 50th anniversary year, which has been filled with announcements, celebrations and merchandise.

Jill Cook, the director of retail business development at Hello Kitty's company Sanrio, shared that the popular kitten is in fact not a cat. Via NBC Today, she said, "She's actually a little girl, born and raised in the suburbs of London! She has a mom and dad, and a twin sister, Mimmy, who's also her best friend. She enjoys baking cookies and making new friends!"
