Smoke season 1 episode 5 recap: The fuse is lit
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 5 from this point forward.

We’ve been teetering on the edge for a while. Dave (Taron Egerton) and Freddy (Ntare Mwine) have tried to hold it together but were nearing a breaking point. As we hit the middle of the season with this week’s episode, “Size Matters,” that breaking point is finally here. Let’s dive in.

Digging into Dave

While there is plenty going on with Dave and Freddy, we also get some big movement and some small wins for Calderone (Jurnee Smollett). Last episode, she gave Dave’s stepson, Emmett (Luke Roessler), a ride home. It was illuminating. It wasn’t long before Emmett discovered Dave’s book, which gave him his own suspicions. As we pick up in episode 5, Emmett arrives at Calderone’s house where he suspects she’s having an affair with his stepdad.

She isn’t,...

Smoke season 1 episode 4 recap: Pain is a powerful motivator
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 4 from this point forward.

We all have trauma. That trauma varies from person to person, as does the response to trauma. But for many, trauma is a driver. It can be a driver for good or a driver for ill. For our three central characters in Smoke, all are dealing with past trauma and present trauma that drives their actions. For one of them, it’s in the right direction. Let’s dive into this week’s episode, “Strawberry.”

Anger as a driver

For Dave (Taron Egerton) and Freddy (Ntare Mwine), pain and anger are a driver toward their actions. Both are struggling this week. Both are a powder keg. And both are ready to lash out, especially by the end of this week’s episode.

Freddy has been passed over. He’s sad. Then angry. Then frustrated. He drops in on...

Smoke season 1 episode 2 recap: The second arsonist isn't who we expected
Image
This post contains spoilers from Smoke season 1 episode 2 from this point forward.

In the second of two episodes of Smoke made available this week, we get a major shakeup. In the pilot, we seemed to be tracking toward a fairly normal police procedural. But this series, from Dennis Lehane, isn’t about what you expect. With this second episode, “Your Happy Makes Me Sad,” we start to see the long game. Let’s dive into a twisty encore.

The manhunt continues in episode 2

As we begin the episode, there are still two serial arsonists. And it seems that both Dave (Taron Egerton) and Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) have made some headway on a different case. Dave managed to track our milk jug arsonist back to the restaurant where his last victims had a date night. Seems seeing other people happy bothers him and fuels his rage. Thanks to the leg work,...

Stephen King's It: Everyone Who Died In Chapter 1 & 2
Image
As one might imagine, the two movies based on Stephen King's It are full of blood and death, and there are a lot of characters who die in It. While it's a decidedly morbid thought, death is the one thing that truly unites all people. Everyone dies eventually, but if one is lucky, that day comes at a very old age and with loved ones at their bedside. In the world of Stephen King, death often comes at the hands of a vampire, a demon, or a shape-shifting monster that takes the form of a clown named Pennywise.

Of all the fictional locales featured in King's novels and short stories, Derry, Maine, is near the top of the list of places no one should ever want to visit. Anyone who crosses its borders is a potential Pennywise casualty. While the clown usually targets kids, he doesn't always, as seen with Adrian Mellon.

Dead To Me: 10 Main Characters, Ranked By Intelligence
Image
This article contains spoilers for Dead to Me season 3

As a black comedy, Dead to Me doesn't shy away from showing very human characters who are incredibly flawed in many ways. Some characters are too caught up in their own world to act intelligently, while other characters' lives are constantly on the line and, as such, they act smarter than they ever have in any other situation.

More than half of the series' main cast commits one crime or another across Dead to Me's three-season run, but some of them are also much better criminals than others. Whether they get away with murder or not, characters like Jen, Judy, Ben, Steve, and more all display their intelligence (or lack thereof) in alternately hilarious and heartbreaking ways.

Although she might be a brutal real estate agent, Lorna Harding (Valerie Mahaffey) is perhaps one of the most clueless and...

Dead To Me S3's "Get Happy" Scene Has A Deeper Meaning Than You Thought
Image
Dead To Me ends season 3 with the Holy Harmonies version of Judy Garland’s “Get Happy,” but the song has a deeper meaning than first realized. One of the final scenes of Dead To Me sees Jen (Christina Applegate) return from Mexico after Judy's death and head to church to watch Henry’s Holy Harmonies (Luke Roessler). The church is decorated with the paper cranes Judy had made during her chemotherapy, and Henry’s Holy Harmonies group is singing a version of Judy Garland’s “Get Happy.” The decorations have an obvious impact on Jen, who has just lost Judy, and make her emotional, but there are obvious signs of comfort at the sight of Judy’s designs.

The Holy Harmonies singing “Get Happy” is meaningful, because it also plays in the pilot of Dead To Me when Jen is grieving her husband Ted, and Jen slamming her car door cuts the song off.

Why Does Jen Keep Sammy The Cat In Dead To Me Season 3

Warning! Spoilers for Dead To Me season 3Season 3 of Dead To Me ended with a heartbroken Jen bringing the stray cat back from Mexico with her, and there’s a reason for this decision and Jen’s choice to name it Sammy. Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) spend three weeks in Mexico, as Judy’s battle comes to an end. Instead of going through grueling clinical trials, Judy wants to enjoy her life with her best friend and take the vacation they both needed. When in Mexico, in Judy’s ex-fiancée Steve Wood's (James Marsden) villa, a cat kept visiting which Judy loved, but Jen hated it. Surprisingly, when Jen left Mexico after Judy’s death on the boat, she took the cat with her and named him Sammy.

‘Dead to Me’ Finale Puts Friendship at the Forefront
Image
“Dead to Me” has been laid to rest with its third and final season that premiered Thursday on Netflix. In the final episode, Liz Feldman’s labyrinthine dark comedy crime soap strips away the frills and thrills in favor of a good old-fashioned girls trip — a last hurrah for Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini), the heart and soul of the show.

Jen and Judy don’t quite make a run for it “Thelma & Louise”-style, but they use Judy’s cancer treatment clinical trial as an excuse to get away for three weeks. Before leaving, Judy confessed to being the sole party responsible for Steve’s (James Marsden) murder, but then Jen claimed to be pregnant with Steve’s baby to explain the presence of her DNA on his body. With the death of FBI agent Glenn Moranis (Garrett Dillahunt), the entire investigation is compromised/complicated, and...

Inside ‘Dead to Me’ Season 3 and Its ‘Bittersweet’ Goodbye: ‘It Was Like a Tear Fest’
Image
When creator Liz Feldman began writing “Dead to Me,” Netflix’s dark comedy about the undying bond between two polar opposite women, it was an exercise in therapy and healing; the longtime comedic writer-producer — who had experienced yearslong infertility issues and the loss of close friends and relatives to sudden illness — had no intention of making a streaming hit, but the series’ explorations of loss, grief and finding compassion in others resonated, from a global audience to the Television Academy. And in Season 3, more twists and turns abound, as do the triumphs of friendship, depths of despair and swells of hope.

“I wanted to acknowledge the fact that we had all collectively, as a society, been through an insane couple of years,” the Emmy-nominated Feldman told TheWrap of the show’s decision to not outright include a pandemic storyline, “and also give a nod to the fact that it’s...

Dead to Me Season 2 Recap: What Happened Leading Up to Season 3?
Image
Season 1 of Dead to Me introduced us to Jen Harding (Christina Applegate) whose husband Ted was killed in a hit-and-run while jogging before the season opened. At a grief support group, Jen met the quirky, but lovable Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini), the women connected, and Judy moved into the Hardings' guest house. Judy quickly bonded with Jen's sons Charlie (Sam McCarthy), and her younger son Henry (Luke Roessler), and began to help the family heal. After Jen broke down one night and blamed herself for Ted's death, Judy confessed that she and her ex-fiancé Steve (James Marsden) were in the car that hit Ted, and they fled the scene rather than stopping to help. Drunk and distraught after being kicked out, Judy was walking into oncoming traffic when she received a call from Jen asking her to come home, where Steve was floating face down in the pool.

‘Dead to Me’: How Season 2 Ended and More Key Moments to Remember Before the Final Season
Image
It’s been two-and-a-half years since the second season of “Dead to Me” dropped on Netflix, and since it was in the middle of 2020, it seems like even longer.

With the third and final season of Liz Feldman’s dark comedy, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, dropping on Nov. 17, Variety is sharing a quick refresher on the biggest things that occurred during the first two seasons.

Judy (Cardellini) and Jen (Applegate) have been partners in crime, quite literally, for some time now. The duo first met in a grief support group after the death of Jen’s husband, Ted. Judy begins helping her take care of her sons, Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler), and becomes part of her family. Eventually, Jen finds out that Judy and her estranged husband, Steve (James Marsden), were the ones responsible for Ted’s death: Judy was driving the car and Steve...

Liz Feldman Discusses Letting Go of ‘Dead to Me’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Since the beginning of her career, showrunner Liz Feldman has been laser-focused on making people laugh. A teenage stand-up, she joined The Groundlings after college and worked for mentor Ellen DeGeneres before writing on a string of traditional broadcast sitcoms. But with Dead to Me, her Netflix comedy-mystery with a high character mortality rate, Feldman’s aware that the third and final season might make some viewers cry when it drops Nov. 17.

“I want people to feel things,” Feldman says of her homage to grief, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. (Both actresses have received Emmy noms for their roles.) “If anything, the pandemic only made me want to tell this story more. What we all went through was not just grief, it was a very weird and ambiguous grief.”

Feldman is primarily focused on celebrating these days. She and her wife, musician Rachael Cantu,...

‘Dead To Me: Season 2’ Review (Netflix)
Image
The first season of Dead To Me was one of the first shows I ever reviewed and I was actually a massive fan of the mysterious drama. The dark and twisted series was insanely gripping but in my review of season one, I ended it by saying that I hoped there wouldn’t be a second season as it could “ruin the narrative of the show” but I could not have been more wrong!
