The First Three Home Alone Movies Set a Trap on a New Streaming Home
Image
When it comes to Christmas movies, few titles are as beloved or as rewatchable as Home Alone. The 1990 family comedy was a star-making vehicle for Macaulay Culkinand a box office juggernaut that retained its commercial milestone for several years. More than three decades later, it remains a holiday staple for families around the world, making it a prized title in any streaming library. Originally a 20th Century Fox production, Home Alone, along with its five sequels, has long been available to stream on Disney+. But now, Disney is expanding access to the franchise by bringing part of it over to Hulu, the platform it acquired through its 2019 takeover of 20th Century Fox. And Home Alone isn’t arriving at its new home alone, as its two direct follow-ups, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) and Home Alone 3 (1997), will also be joining the Hulu lineup.

July 1 Will Be a Great Day for Home Alone Fans
Image
Another John Hughes movie is headed to streaming. Home Alone fans will be able to stream three of the franchise's movies next month.

Hulu subscribers can stream the original Home Alone, 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and 1997's pseudo-reboot Home Alone 3beginning July 1 according to Hulu's July calendar. Writer-producer John Hughes launched the beloved family movies with a 1990 holiday classic starring Macaulay Culkin

Home Alone instantly became a festive classic and launched a franchise that continued in 1992 with Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Kevin was once again pitted against the Wet Bandits – now known as the Sticky Bandits – in NYC after getting lost on a plane headed for New York City. Donald Trump's cameo has since been revived online. The first two Home Alone movies have spawned endless fan theories to explain why Kevin's parents were so consistently distracted, including one claiming the family may have had mob ties.

Home Alone Star Reveals Scary Encounter With Real Spider on Set
Image
Home Alone star Daniel Stern has revealed his scary encounter with a real spider on the film’s set. Stern memorably played one-half of the Wet Bandits with Joe Pesci in Home Alone.

The 1990 holiday classic’s climactic scenes memorably involves 8-year-old Kevin McCallister using home-made booby traps to foil the Wet Bandits breaking into his home. At one point, Stern’s character Marv shrieks in horror when a tarantula walks across his face while he’s recovering from being burned by a clothing iron. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Stern revealed that he was completely taken by surprise when it came time to film the spider encounter. “I was kind of in a groove at that point of doing crazy things, so when I showed up on the set to do the spider thing, I thought … 'Let's see what happens. I'm sure they're gonna have a great prop spider.'...

I'm Sorry But Home Alone Fans Are Wrong About This Controversial Sequel
Image
Many Home Alone fans have probably only chanced upon Home Alone 3 during ABC's 25 Days of Christmas movie marathon, or have seen the film as part of Disney+'s Home Alone collection. The 1997 addition to the Home Alone franchise has received an undeserved amount of vitriol from fans over the years. While the film may lack many of the beloved elements of Home Alone and Home Alone: Lost in New York, like Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister or New York City at Christmastime, the film has many of its own enjoyable moments and is a unique approach to the holiday family comedy.

Opening in Hong Kong, Home Alone 3 introduces an international crime element to the Home Alone formula by setting up a plot to steal an American Air Force computer chip that can hide missiles from detection. Thieves in pursuit of this chip end up in a quiet Chicago neighborhood,...

Scarlett Johansson's Cult Classic Horror Movie With 48% On Rotten Tomatoes Is Still Brilliant Fun 22 Years Later
Image
Scarlett Johansson’s spider-infested horror movie Eight Legged Freaks was met with negative reviews on its initial release in 2002, but it remains an underrated gem. These days, Johansson is known for starring in giant blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Oscar-winning dramas like Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. But early in her career, she appeared in a wider range of projects — and that includes some of Johansson’s best movies. She appeared in critical darlings like Lost in Translation and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but she also starred in her share of B-movies.

Johansson co-starred with Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay’s sci-fi thriller The Island, she played Alex Pruitt’s older sister in Home Alone 3, and she played the sheriff’s daughter in Ellory Elkayem’s horror comedy Eight Legged Freaks. This movie sees a swarm of spiders getting exposed to mutagenic toxic waste, growing to kaiju size, and attacking a small mining town.

McCauley Culkin has been in the news for the past few days due to a fan-made trailer of Home Alone 3. Culkin starred in the first part of the much-loved series of films where he played 8-year-old Kevin McCallister. The Christmas Comedy film was released in 1990 and is still one of the most loved films to watch in the Holiday season.

The first two movies of this film series were directed by Chris Columbus and starred the Richie Rich star, who was paid $100K and then $5 Million for each part, respectively. The first part was made on a budget of $18 Million and earned a profit of around 1483%, collecting $285 million in North America and $288 million worldwide.

Why Macaulay Culkin Didn't Star In Home Alone 3
Image
Macaulay Culkin left the Home Alone franchise after the second movie, and his absence in Home Alone 3 was a major reason for its lackluster reception. Culkin retired from acting after his early success as a child actor, which drastically changed the future of the Home Alone franchise. Home Alone 3 failed to resonate with audiences, largely because it didn't have Culkin or any of the other original cast members, resulting in a significant drop in box office earnings compared to the previous films.

Despite being the star of the first two Home Alone movies as Kevin McCallister, Macaulay Culkin left the franchise after 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York — and despite over three decades passing since, many viewers still wonder why Kevin wasn't in Home Alone 3. The first Home Alone sees Kevin left behind when his family goes on vacation over Christmas, which leads to him...

Scarlett Johansson's Home Alone 3 Role, Explained
Image
Before Scarlett Johansson became famous for starring in action blockbusters and Oscar-winning dramas, she played a compelling role in Home Alone 3. There isn't much that is memorable about the 1997 sequel, which follows eight-year-old Alex Pruitt (Alex D. Lintz) as he stays home from school with chickenpox and battles criminals. When compared to the original two installments starring Macaulay Culkin, Home Alone 3 didn't capture the same magic, but Johansson's appearance stands out and proves that she was already on the path to becoming an acclaimed actor.

Johansson began acting as a child, starring in the heartwarming 1998 drama The Horse Whisperer before her breakout role as sarcastic teenager Rebecca in 2001's Ghost World. By the time she played Charlotte in 2003's Lost in Translation, her talent was evident. Johansson's most popular movies include Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, which resulted in two Oscar nominations in the same year. As her...

CBC responds to cutting Trump cameo from Christmas airing of Home Alone 2
Earlier this month, countless Twitter users came out in support of director Raja Gosnell's Home Alone 3, which stars Alex D. Linz as Alex Pruitt, a nine-year-old Bostonian who must fend off international spies who seek a top-secret chip in his toy car. The 1997 sequel is of course a follow-up to Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, both of which star Macaulay…...

Home Alone Disney+ Reboot Casts JoJo Rabbit's Archie Yates, More
Joseph Baxter Rosie Fletcher Dec 11, 2019

A Home Alone reboot movie is in the works, set for an arrival on streaming platform Disney+.

Disney is seemingly dominating the entertainment industry these days with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars and its incredible animation back catalog, emboldened now more than ever with self-distribution grandeur, with streaming service Disney+ (home of Star Wars serial smash The Mandalorian!) providing a platform on which more of its rebooted IP can manifest, as recently exemplified by the debut of its live-action Lady and the Tramp movie.

Home Alone, a piece of property cheese nabbed by the monolithic Mouse in the company’s recent acquisition of Fox, happens to be on the docket for a Disney+ reboot treatment, joining similarly-fated properties in Night at The Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid; a reveal made by big boss Bob Iger at a Q3 earnings call back in August,...

The complete Home Alone retrospective: Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House

The first Home Alone film to skip cinemas. Home Alone 4, though, had problems on its hands. Not least recasting the original roles...

Spoilers lie ahead.

I’m not familiar with what happened to the Home Alone rights between 1997 and 2002, but it’s fair to say that – a decade on from the original – anyone remotely interested in watching a Home Alone sequel will have moved on to whatever older teenagers were into back in 2002. MP3 players and Chemsex or whatever. But surely there’s always a fresh stream of children who might want to revel in the action and comedy of a Home Alone movie? Well, no. But there might just be enough people keen enough to watch it on TV under the mistaken belief that the name represented any badge of quality.

So it was that we ended up with Home Alone 4: Taking Back The House.

Macaulay Culkin was gone, Alex D Linz and Scarlett Johansson were in. Home Alone 3? Er, not many people's highpoint...

Spoilers lie ahead.

Readers, can you believe that Home Alone 2 – crappy though it was – did box office almost as high as the first? Sure you can, because you probably saw them both in the cinema. A third movie was inevitable.

But times change. By 1997, the world was no longer high off the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the freeing of Nelson Mandela, and Macaulay Culkin had quit the acting biz to become… whatever he became. The optimistic kids that dragged their parents to Home Alones 1 and 2 had become cynical, jaded teenagers uninteresting the continuing adventures of Kevin McCallister. What the franchise needed was a new hero. A new star. A new child star for America, and the world, to clasp to its collective bosom.

I...
