Emily Robinson has completed production on her directorial debut Ugly Cry in Los Angeles.

The body horror film, which is also written by and stars Robinson, features Ryan Simpkins, Aaron Dominguez and Robin Tunney.

Although plot details remain under wraps, the film is described as a visceral exploration of beauty standards in the modern era, filtered through the lens of a young actress who has been told she has an “ugly cry.”

The cast is rounded out with Andrew Leeds, Heather Morris, Chalia La Tour, Ray Abruzzo, Sophie Von Haselberg, Josh Ruben and Melinda McGraw.

Sun Valley Film Festival to Celebrate First-Time Helmers and Industry Icons

The 13th annual Sun Valley Film Festival, kicking off Feb. 28, will aim to once again to capture the spirit of storytelling by celebrating poignant films at the Idaho ski resort town.

This year’s festival kicks off with “Ezra,” directed by Tony Goldwyn and starring Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne and Robert De Niro, and concludes March 3 with a screening of “Sugarcane,” a documentary about missing children at a Native residential school that recently won a directing trophy for Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat at Sundance.

The programming team also chose multiple films from first-time feature filmmakers, including Sophia Sabello and Pablo Feldman’s “Edge of Everything,” Annie Baker’s “Janet Planet,” Marc Marriott’s “Tokyo Cowboy,” Caroline Lindy’s “Your Monster,” while the documentary line-up includes Maggie Contreras’ “Maestra” and Lisa D’Apolito’s “Shari & Lamb Chop.”

Santa Barbara Film Festival Winners Include ‘Transmexico’, ‘Andragogy’, More

Claudia Sanchez’s documentary Transmexico took the Audience Choice Award on Saturday at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, which revealed winners in its juried categories as it wraps its 39th edition.

The doc follows three trans women who challenge societal norms while inspiring change against daunting odds.

Other winners include Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman’s Edge of Everything, which took the fest’s Spirit Award for Independent Cinema; Nays Baghai’s Driving Into the Darkness as Best Documentary; and Wregas Bhanuteja’s Andragogy from Indonesia as Best International Feature Film.

The fest also bestowed wins on short films A Man’s Man (documentary), Area Boy (live-action) and On the 8th Day (animated), qualifying the pics for the 2025 Oscars.

“TransMexico,” “Edge of Everything” and Andragogy” are among the winners of the 39th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The Sbiff, whose mission is to discover and showcase the “best in independent and international cinema,” has become one of the leading film festivals in the United States – attracting roughly 100,000 attendees for a packed week slatted with screenings of over 200+ films.

A panel of jury members selected the winners, which included Lesley Chilcott, Alex Keledjian, Chris Landon, Lael Loewenstein, Jacqueline Lyanga, David Magdael, Gail Mancuso, Greg Nava, Pituka Ortega Heilbron, Carla Renata, Gil Robertson, Ondi Timoner, Clay Tweel and Ali Wolfe.

Lightyear Acquires U.S. Rights to Coming-of-Age Movie ‘Edge of Everything’ (Exclusive)

Lightyear Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to coming-of-age drama “Edge of Everything” from Visit Films. The film stars Sierra McCormick, previously seen in Slamdance award winner “The Vast of Night.”

The film is from writer-director duo Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman, who are making their feature-length narrative debut. McCormick plays a teen going through the seemingly unbearable trials and tribulations of growing up.

The drama will have its U.S. premiere on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and a limited theatrical release will follow in the spring, after which the film will be released on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market.

Filmest München has secured six world premieres for its upcoming 40th anniversary edition, including Vincent Perez’sThe Edge Of The Blade and Leo Leigh’s UK comedy drama Sweet Sue, recently acquirred by Curzon.

‘Burnouts’: Sierra McCormick, Jade Pettyjohn & More To Star In Supernatural Thriller From Writer-Director Tim Donner

Exclusive: Sierra McCormick (American Horror Stories), Jade Pettyjohn (Big Sky), Brenna D’Amico (Descendants franchise), Gianni DeCenzo (Cobra Kai) and Bentley Green (61st Street) have signed on to star in Burnouts, a supernatural thriller from writer-director Tim Donner, which is heading into production in Atlanta this summer.

The film sees a group of grieving teens, hot off of quarantine, head off for a much needed retreat to reconnect and mend their wounds. A seance subsequently leads to an evening where anything can and does happen. Summer Parker (ABC’s Schooled pilot) and Connor Hammond (The Summer I Turned Pretty) will also star. Farrah West cast the film, which Kevin G. Lee and Kendrick Foxx of Tlk Filmworks are producing.

McCormick recently had an arc on FX on Hulu’s American Horror Stories, and can currently be seen in the horror film We Need to Do Something, which is streaming on Hulu.

Exclusive: Sierra McCormick (American Horror Stories), Jason Butler Harner (Ozark), Ryan Simpkins (Fear Street trilogy), Dominique Gayle (First Love), Nadezhda Amé (Graceland), Sabina Friedman-Seitz (The Florida Project), Emily Robinson (Eighth Grade), Drew Scheid (Mare of Easttown) and Anthony Del Negro (Lazy Susan) will star in Sour Milk, the first feature from writer-directors Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman, which recently wrapped production in the Bay Area.

The film follows Abby (McCormick), who is on the cusp of turning 15, straddling the line between childhood and adulthood when she is forced to move in with her father (Harner) and his younger girlfriend after her mother’s death. The drama is largely inspired by Sabella and Feldman’s experiences coming of age in Mill Valley, CA.

Sabella and Feldman produced with Jolene Mendes and Rabia Sultana, with Todd Traina, Robert Girard and Henry Schwartz exec producing. The production companies involved include Sultana Films in association with Near Future.
