Pulse and The Residence: Why Netflix Canceled 2 Shows After One Season
Image
In a move that has caught both audiences and the industry off guard, Netflix has officially canceled two of its major one-season shows: Pulse and The Residence. Both shows, intended to broaden the streamer’s genre horizons and international slate, were given a rather abrupt exit, reflecting a shift in Netflix’s approach to programming.

The Residence, backed by Shondaland, was set in the White House and carried major prestige, while Pulse was Netflix’s take on medical dramas, was aimed at audiences hungry for high-concept storytelling. Yet, neither show successfully made it past the season. While the platform could’ve simply canceled the two shows to make space for cultural juggernauts like Bridgerton or Stranger Things but it’s worth examining why these two couldn’t survive the Netflix axe.

Netflix Dropped The Residence and Pulse After One Season

Netflix’s decision to cancel The Residence and Pulse came without much public fanfare; however,...

‘The Residence’ Canceled at Netflix After 1 Season But the Story Was Just Getting Started
Image
The lights are out and doors have closed on The Residence, as Netflix has canceled the White House-set murder mystery after just one season. Starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the “greatest detective in the world,” Shonda Rhimes‘ whodunnit joins freshman medical drama Pulse on the chopping block of canceled shows. Also starring Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Bronson Pinchot, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Edwina Findley, Mary Wiseman, and Jane Curtin, news of the cancellation broke on July 2. Deadline first reported the news. The Shondaland-produced mystery followed detective Cordelia Cupp (Aduba) as she investigated a murder during a state dinner. Across eight episodes, she questioned staff and guests to uncover hidden motives while exposing personal dramas inside the presidential residence. But what could have been had the show continued? If the series had gone forward, the show would have become an anthology with Cupp at the center, taking on a new case each season.

Netflix's 85% Rotten Tomatoes Murder Mystery Series Has Its Season 2 Fate Solved
Image
After weeks on the Netflix Top 10, an 85% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a stellar ensemble led by Uzo Aduba and Giancarlo Esposito, The Residence seemed like a promising candidate for renewal. Unfortunately, the streaming giant has officially shut the door on the White House for good — The Residence has been cancelled after just one season.

Despite its unique premise, buzzy cast, and a positive critical reception, Netflix has opted not to move forward with Season 2 of The Residence. The show, which premiered March 20 and drew 6.4 million views in its debut week, quickly climbed the streamer’s English TV Top 10 list. It eventually settled into a four-week run on the chart, which is no small feat for a new property with no pre-existing franchise ties.

Based on The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, the Shondaland-produced series offered a screwball twist on the traditional whodunnit.

Netflix Cancels ‘Pulse’ and Shondaland’s ‘The Residence’ After One Season Each
Image
Netflix has axed two of its spring originals — the medical drama “Pulse” and Shondaland murder mystery “The Residence,” TheWrap has learned. As for “No Good Deed,” the streamer has yet to make a renewal decision about the show starring Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow.

“Pulse” was notable as it was Netflix’s first big medical drama, a genre that has long been successful on television. Both “ER” and “Grey’s Anatomy” fall into that category, and they remain two of the most beloved and widely referenced shows in television history. While Netflix’s medical play may have failed, HBO’s certainly didn’t. “The Pitt,” which came out months before the April premiere of “Pulse,” was a streaming hit for the streamer.

As for “The Residence,” which premiered in late March, the White House murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba was created by Paul William Davies and is based on Kate Andersen Brower’s book,...

‘Pulse,’ ‘The Residence’ Canceled at Netflix After One Season Each
Image
Freshman Netflix shows “Pulse” and “The Residence” have both been canceled, Variety has learned. Both series aired just one season at the streamer.

“Pulse” premiered on April 3 and debuted with 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10, followed by 8.5 million, 3.2 million and 2 million views in the weeks after that. The series received a ratings of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety’s review noting “a poorly formatted narrative, an appalling depiction of sexual harassment and a few insufferable characters [that] don’t exactly make for a pleasurable watch.”

The series also suffered due to the proximity of its premiere to the finale of “The Pitt” at Max, with the latter medical drama scoring much higher with critics and audiences alike.

“Pulse” starred Willa Fitzgerald as Dr. Danny Simms, a third-year resident at a Level 1 trauma center Miami, who is unexpectedly promoted after beloved chief resident Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended. Per the official logline,...

Uzo Aduba and Randall Park on Their ‘The Residence’ Chemistry and If There Will Be a Season 2: ‘I Don’t Think That Just Ends’
Image
Uzo Aduba knows more about birds now than she ever thought she would. “I’d never heard of a grackle before. I know the purple grackle,” she says. “Or the snow-spotted owl. I came in knowing like what a hummingbird and a red robin are. And now I know what a giant antpitta is.”

On Netflix’s “The Residence,” a quirky murder mystery from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland label, Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, widely considered the best detective in the world — who also happens to be a bit eccentric, with a particular obsession for birdwatching.

Aduba’s character is dispatched to the White House when White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter is found murdered. The event takes place in the middle of an Australian state dinner, which means there could be hundreds of suspects. Among those guiding Cupp in her investigation: FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (Randall Park).

How Uzo Aduba solved the mystery of her ‘The Residence’ role in the finale
Image
Uzo Aduba truly came to understand her character, the sharp and savvy investigator Cordelia Cupp, during the final episode of the debut season of Netflix's The Residence.

“She has this energy,” Aduba told Gold Derby at the Hollywood Legion Theater before the show’s FYC panel. “She walks us through the whole case and how she solved it, and I just remember it changed the way I saw her.”

That pivotal moment — when Cordelia, tasked with solving a murder within the White House, barrels down the Grand Cross hallway passionately rambling about a spotted owl — reframed Aduba’s entire understanding of the character she’d been embodying. “I always thought she was this very singular, serious person who's not emotional about anything,” she said. “And the truth of it is, the thing that gets her excited is her job; that's what she lives for."

From the interrogation to the summation,...

Esposito stars alongside Randall Park and Uzo Aduba in The Residence, the latest screwball comedy/whodunnit mystery streaming on Netflix. The show follows White House staff workers and the lives they share with the First Family. All eight episodes of The Residence dropped on Netflix more than a month ago (March 20), and although it took some time, the series has infiltrated the Netflix top 10, sitting at #8 at the time of writing. It also stars Molly Griggs and Ken Marino and earned solid scores of 85% from critics and 77% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Agatha Christie Fans Will Love Netflix's New Chart-Busting Murder Mystery Series
Image
Several years ago, TV powerhouse Shonda Rhimes left her original home at ABC behind and signed a major development deal with Netflix, marking a new era for the creator of shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal." Arguably, "Bridgerton" has been her biggest credit on the streamer yet — though it was created by Rhimes acolyte Chris Van Dusen, she does serve as an executive producer — but now, a new series by Paul William Davies with Rhimes' name attached as an executive producer is making waves on Netflix in its own right.

"The Residence" is a madcap, high-octane, and very funny murder mystery conceived by Davies and centers around a murder at the White House during a state dinner honoring Australia; when the Chief Usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) is found dead in the game room, everyone is trapped inside of the presidential residence until the culprit is caught. That's where...

Rhimes' biggest recent title was the Bridgerton adaptation, which is a major hit on Netflix. Now, her company produced the mystery drama The Residence, created by Paul William Davies. Shortly after the release of the star-studded series, The Residence quickly became a hit on Netflix, per Tudum.

The series premiered on the platform on Mar. 20, and for the week between Mar. 17 and 23, it reached the second spot in the global charts, as well as the U.S. Although it didn't have a full week to make an impression, Shondaland's new title had 6.4 million views and 49.5 million hours viewed.

‘The Residence’ Creator on Casting Al Franken (but Not Hugh Jackman!), a Possible Season 2 and Losing Andre Braugher: ‘We All Loved Him and He Loved the Show’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains major spoilers from “The Residence,” now streaming on Netflix.

Before writing a single word of Netflix’s latest murder mystery “The Residence,” creator Paul William Davies knew exactly who the killer and the victim would be.

Over the course of eight episodes, the new screwball whodunit series — inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” — unraveled the mystery surrounding the demise of White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter on the night of an Australian state dinner at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

After conducting a whirlwind investigation on the night of the murder, during which she interviewed 157 suspects and potential witnesses to the crime and its attempted cover-up, Detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) returns to the White House, where she gives all of her remaining persons of interest a tour of the house while explaining the many...

‘The Residence’ Creator Unpacks Netflix Mystery’s ‘Mischievous’ Resolution
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s “The Residence.”

“The Residence” took Netflix viewers through an elaborate tour of the White House — via a complicated but comedic murder mystery.

Created by Paul William Davies and based on the non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” by Kate Andersen Brower, the mystery of who killed White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) was revealed by the end of Episode 8. Detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) found that Lilly Schumacher, the President’s social secretary played by Molly Griggs, was the person responsible for the murder.

Things get complicated from there, as at least five of the 157 potential suspects had a hand in moving Wynter’s body from where the murder took place, to where Nan Cox (Jane Curtin) first found him and kicked off the investigation.

“[‘The Residence] is crazy and silly and preposterous on one level,...

How ‘The Residence’ Creator Turned a White House Memoir Into Netflix’s Next Great Whodunnit

“The Residence” was one of the first projects Shondaland announced to be in development back in 2018, as part of the company’s massive producing deal with Netflix. One pandemic and two strikes later — plus the death of a key cast member — the brilliant whodunnit starring Uzo Aduba is finally making its debut Thursday.

Created by Paul William Davies and based on the non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” by Kate Andersen Brower, the series delivers a meticulous survey on the lives and inner workings of the White House staff, through the scope of a sweeping murder investigation led by Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), known as “the best detective in the world.”

‘The Residence’ Wants to Be ‘Only Murders in the White House.’ It Just Isn’t Funny
Image
The success of Only Murders in the Building might seem, at first glance, like an unqualified good. It got nominated for a ton of awards. It created work for countless New York theater actors. It helped cement Selena Gomez’s transition from child to adult actor. It made a real-life couple out of Martin Short and Meryl Streep. But, sadly, there is one big downside: the knockoffs.

It’s not like Only Murders invented the whodunnit; it just broke out with a specific comedic style, and now too many creators think they can make a version that’s similar enough to pass. Bodkin drops a dour brunette among friendly chatters, like Mabel (Gomez) with her Only Murders neighbors. Based on A True Story makes true-crime fanatics face their own murder mystery, like the trio of podcast fans at the heart of Only Murders. Death and Other Details borrows both the...

The Residence Review: Netflix & Shonda Rhimes Deliver a Can't Miss Mystery
Image
The Residence is the best murder mystery on Netflix since Knives Out. The White House whodunnit from Bridgerton and Grey's Anatomy executive producer Shonda Rhimes hits the ground running and rarely lets up. Created by Paul William Davies and starring Uzo Uduba as consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, The Residence features an eclectic mix of eccentric characters as it reinvigorates the tried and true murder mystery formula.

The Netflix original series -- inspired by Kate Andersen Brower's book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House -- plays with murder mystery tropes and then catches the audience unaware. There are plenty of suspects, red herrings and hidden agends to keep audiences guessing. Between the twists and turns, and the strength of a star-studded cast, eight episodes almost doesn't feel like enough for this exciting show.

Shondaland’s ‘The Residence’ Is a Sprawling White House Murder Mystery That Works Best When It Amps Up the Humor: TV Review
Image
In Shondaland’s latest Netflix series, “The Residence,” created by Paul William Davies and inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House,” viewers get a bird’s eye view (pun intended) of the inner workings of one of America’s most enduring institutions. Every day, hundreds of people labor behind the scenes to ensure everything from major events to the president’s living quarters are seamlessly attended to. A hilarious, eclectic and often bizarre murder mystery, “The Residence” is the closest thing to a comedy that executive producer Shonda Rhimes has ever done. The show is an overwhelming 1000-piece puzzle that eventually comes together should audiences have the patience to stick it out.

The eight-episode murder mystery (critics received seven episodes for review) opens on the night of the Australian State Dinner. Amid strained relations, the new administration led by President...

Inside ‘The Residence’: Uzo Aduba solves a murder in the ‘under-covered’ parts of the White House
Image
Netflix’s new murder-mystery series The Residence is loosely based on Kate Andersen Brower's historical book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, but its true inspiration was C-span. Creator Paul William Davies was watching a hearing on the network when he suddenly had an epiphany.

"The chief usher was testifying about some stuff in the White House and was describing the third floor and put up a map. And I thought, 'Oh wait, it's like a Clue board!'" Davies tells Gold Derby. "You know, the game room and the music room. I just was like, 'Oh, that's what I could do.' And that's a genre I've always loved, and I think secretly, even to myself, maybe always really wanted to give it a shot but never felt like I had an opportunity to. So I thought, 'Oh I can marry doing something that...

Netflix's 'The Residence' Pays Tribute to Andre Braugher
Image
Netflix's upcoming series The Residence will pay tribute to the late actor Andre Braugher, with a title card in his memory at the end of the show's eight-episode season. Braugher was set to star in the show as White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter, in a key role that would have no doubt added to his other memorable TV turns, including playing Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street. He joined the cast of the Shondaland series in February 2023 but didn't complete production as he died in December 2023 of lung cancer.

Paul William Davies, who created The Residence for Netflix, told Deadline that an "In Memory" title card will appear at the end of the series, which is slated to premiere on Mar. 20, to honor Braugher, who had filmed several episodes before he passed away. Davies explained that the...

Everything We Know About Shondalands Upcoming Netflix Series
Image
The Residence is a murder-mystery comedy-drama series inspired by a non-fiction book about the lives of White House residence staff members. The show boasts a star-studded cast, including Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, and Randall Park. Production for The Residence was delayed due to the Writer's Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes, resulting in changes in the cast, and is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2024.

The television production company Shondaland, founded by television writer and producer Shonda Rhimes, is one of the most prolific in recent years. For this reason, fans have high expectations for Shondaland's next scripted show for Netflix, The Residence. Shondaland is behind TV powerhouses such as Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and the historical romance Bridgerton. Bridgerton was Shondaland's first scripted show for Netflix, and upon its debut, Bridgerton was the most-watched original series launched on the streaming service. Shondaland also produced Inventing Anna and Bridgerton's prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
