Netflix’s hit sci-fi show 3 Body Problem is bringing in some new faces for its second season, including a star from Game of Thrones. According to reports, Alfie Allen, known for his role as Theon Greyjoy, will join the cast in a recurring role.

3 Body Problem was renewed for two more seasons back in 2024. Fans were delighted for the opportunity to get to see the next two Cixin Liu's books adapted onscreen, after a particularly wild cliffhanger was left dangling over our heads at the end of season 1: the alien race of the San Ti are on their way to Earth, and they're not exactly friendly, sending a message to humanity: "You are bugs."

Unfortunately for the audience, it seems their arrival on Earth might take some time. Despite a prompt renewal announcement Netflix did not include the show on its list of 2025 releases, leading to rumors of a 2026 release.

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is continuing to tell the story of its first season through some “additional episodes” that the streamer has ordered, which will seemingly segue into new seasons as the show has been renewed for two more. “Will operates from a place of such immense love and clarity, which I think is often common with people who are dealing with facing their own mortality,” reveals “3 Body Problem” star Alex Sharp. For our recent webchat about portraying Will Downing, a brilliant scientist diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, Sharp recounts a day on set when “there was a line that was ended up being cut. In the bar scene at the beginning of the season, where Jack makes a comment to Will about something to do with him giving up and just being a teacher, Will responds, ‘don’t you think there’s something really noble about dedicating your life to the future?'” he recalls, adding, “that’s just Will. Then you put that person in the position of being terminally ill and it’s like almost a microcosm or metaphor for what humanity is dealing with.

There will be two more seasons of the 3 Body Problem TV series. The series' creators have confirmed that season three will wrap the series at an event held over the weekend.

Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.

Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.

It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

Netflix has picked up additional episodes of 3 Body Problem to conclude the story which will be created, executive produced and written by the returning trio of David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo.

Additionally, Benioff and Weiss will continue their exclusive partnership with the streamer as their multi-year deal to write, produce and direct new series and films has been extended. Beyond Season 2 of this series, they are also working on the recently announced series Death by Lightning. Woo, who has an overall deal with Netflix, will return as co-creator, executive producer and writer on 3 Body Problem.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, 3 Body Problem has ranked in the No.1 spot among streaming titles for the second week in a row, according to Nielsen's reporting numbers. Better yet is that its second week saw an increase in viewership, suggesting a continued growth in popularity. For the week of March 25-31, 3 Body Problem garnered 1.79 billion minutes of viewing, a rise of 30% compared to the previous week. That makes the series the No. 1 show overall on streaming, surpassing The Resident --- available on both Hulu and Netflix --- which had 1.48 billion minutes viewed.
