10 Most Controversial Disney Couples, Ranked
Image
Disney couples are emblematic of the love we aspire to procure. With pairs like Nala and Simba, Eugene and Rapunzel and Tiana and Naveen, it's easy to get lost in an idealistic vision of love. However, not all Disney couples are held in the same regard. Viewers have reexamined many only to reveal problematic undertones of power imbalances and manipulation.

Of course, relationships come in all forms and not all of them can be exceptional representations, but even some of Disney's most notable films display depictions of love that should do anything but set an example for audiences. With so many growing up on Disney's classics, conceptions of romance can be twisted and lead to a devastating trajectory in one's love life. Rather than being swept up in the generalization that Disney has love down to a science, here are some examples that ask viewers to take a second look.

8 Major Differences Between Disney's Cinderella and the Original Book
Image
Disney has plenty of princesses, but Cinderella holds a special place in fans' hearts. The original animated film is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and most agree that it has aged gracefully. Despite her stepfamily's cruelty, audiences admire Cinderella's steadfastness and ability to stay kind even under such terrible circumstances. Many also find her a bit more relatable since she wasn't born into royalty. Interestingly, this is one of quite a few details that were changed from the original fairy tale.

Although Disney's Cinderella is primarily based on the 1697 French fairy tale by Charles Perrault, "Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre," this version was adapted from an Italian story by Giambattista Basile, "La gatta Cenerentola." The short story was published in 1634 as part of his collection, Pentamerone, and is considered the oldest literary version of the tale. Here are eight of the biggest differences between Disney's Cinderella and Basile's original fairy tale.

High Potential: There Are Cops, and Then There Is Detective Karadec Captivating Us with His Signature Sizzling Smolder
Image
When it comes to police procedurals, there’s an unwritten rule that you need at least one tall drink of water who spends his time brooding and taking everything too seriously.

For ABC‘s High Potential, that character is none other than the smoldering and mysteriously sexy Detective Karadec in all his strong-jaw glory.

Sure, Morgan may be the main character of the series, but even with that big brain of hers, she can hardly do it all on her own.

(Disney/Pamela Littky)

The worth of any show is found in the sum of its parts, and High Potential is made up of a quality cast of characters that never stop delivering intense drama and perfectly timed comedy.

Since the start of the series, Karadec has been beside Morgan for most of her scenes. Between the two characters, they just about set the tone and pace of every episode.

The Cringiest Disney Movie Couples, Ranked
Image
Disney has given its legions of fans some of the best child-friendly romances in cinematic history. Each tells a story of love triumphing over evil and how there is nothing more precious than to share one's heart with another. It has created generation after generation of romantics who try to emulate the moral lessons provided by the films in their own love lives. At the same time, there are some relationships that are just outright cringy or otherwise incredibly problematic.

Disney began its ventures into depicting romantic relationships in the early 1900s. Back then, standards of romance weren't the same now and the process of building a relationship (if it can even be called that) are unhealthy at best and abusive at worst. As a result, some pairings may not be as impressive as they were when they first appeared.

There's An Obvious Release Window For This Princess Still Missing From Disney Dreamlight Valley

One of the main features that has made Disney Dreamlight Valley one of the most successful cozy games in recent years is the element of nostalgia that the game provides for players who grew up adoring Disney's beloved characters. From Pixar favorites to classic Disney stars like Mickey Mouse himself, there are many different characters to unlock and befriend in Disney Dreamlight Valley. For some players, the addition of Disney Princesses in the game is the most exciting feature, bringing with them all sorts of reward items and objects to collect in Scrooge's Store.

So far, Disney Dreamlight Valley has introduced many Disney Princesses, including Rapunzel, Ariel, Mulan, Tiana, Elsa and Anna, and Belle. For fans of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora might join the party in The Storybook Vale "Part Two" upon its release at the end of 2025. Mufasa Has A Brilliant Connection To An Underrated Disney Princess Movie
Image
Warning: There are mild spoilers ahead for Mufasa: The Lion King.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s connection to one great Disney princess fits its themes and makes the movie even better. Directed by award-winning Barry Jenkins, the Lion King prequel explains Mufasa’s origin story before he became king of the Pride Lands and Simba’s father. Presenting him as a non-royal cub who gets separated from his parents during a flood, the film rewrites the events from the 1994 version, having Mufasa be saved by Taka (or Scar) and adopted by her mother, Eshe.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s reviews praise its emotive visuals and talented cast, mainly actors Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who work to offer the tragic brotherly story between Mufasa and Scar. The rest of the actors and actresses are also great, marking the return of new and familiar voices that complete the prequel...

A Subtle Element Of This Underrated Disney Classic Gives The Film A Powerful Underlying Message
Image
The Princess and the Frog's ending carries a subtle element that breaks historical precedent but underscores many of the film's subversive strengths. Released in 2009, The Princess and the Frog was one of the last 2D-animated films from Walt Disney Animation, and the first to feature a black lead character. Tiana is a hard-working young woman from New Orleans in the 1920s, who spends the film balancing her deep commitment to earning her future with a lack of concern for romance. The film is largely set in the Bayou after Tiana and the charming Prince Naveen are turned into frogs.

Their slow-burn Disney romance serves as the film's emotional core, with most of the film following the archetypical story arc. However, some subtle elements of the film are reflective of the regressive beliefs of the real-life setting where the film takes place. This gives the film's ending, where Tiana opens...

10 Disney Princesses Everyone Forgets About
Image
Among Disney's vast catalog of characters, some of the most popular are the Disney princesses, yet not every princess gets the attention or the treatment she rightfully deserves. Generally, the Disney princesses who are most easily recognized are those from the company's most popular movies, i.e. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Frozen to name a few. There are other princesses who may not be as memorable, but have plenty of adoring fans, such as Tiana or Rapunzel. However, there is another tier of Disney princesses who are often completely forgotten, yet have plenty to offer.

What is most surprising about these forgotten princesses is that they are actual princesses. While many Disney characters get honorary princess status despite not being actual princesses, like Hercules' Megara or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's Esmeralda, these underrated characters are true royalty. Not only are these characters swept under the rug,...

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Invites Guests to “Dig A Little Deeper” Into Once-Problematic Disney Attraction
Image
On July 17, 1989, Splash Mountain opened at Disneyland Park; three years later, a version of the same ride opened at Disney World. It was a problematic attraction from the onset — the ride had all the classic charm of other timeless Disney fare like Peter Pan’s Flight and Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, but this iteration was founded on a troubling principle.

The film the ride was based on, Song of the South, had been voluntarily removed from circulation by Disney three years before Splash Mountain ever opened. The film was widely known to be racist and was heavily criticized for romanticizing the plantation-era South in America, and for bolstering harmful stereotypes about Black people.

Now, over 30 years later, the uncomfortable subtext of Splash Mountain has been put to rest, and in its place splashes down something all the more charming, festive and fun.

Gone are the hillbilly-ish caricatures of Br’er Rabbit,...

Why ‘Wish’ Filmmakers Chose the Same Aspect Ratio as ‘Sleeping Beauty’
Image
Five years ago, while chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios Jennifer Lee was finishing work on “Frozen II,” she mentioned to her co-director, Chris Buck, that the studio’s 100th anniversary was coming up — and asked whether he’d want to be involved in any projects pegged to the anniversary?

They didn’t have any idea what that animated feature would be but they knew that “we wanted original characters, story and music,” says Buck.

They began gathering stills from every animated feature the studio had done and pinned them to a bulletin board.

They looked at the breadth of colors and styles. From “Pinocchio’s” Jiminy Cricket to “The Princess and the Frog’s” Tiana to Judy Hopps in “Zootopia,” one thing was apparent — that these and many other characters had all made wishes on stars.

“It feels very obvious. Of course, these characters are wishing on the stars.

Disney: The Evolution of Princesses in Movies
Image
Disney has been the standard for film and animation by continually telling stories that evolve and deeply impact audiences of all ages, exploring a multitude of themes and even serious, real-life issues. Whether it’s Snow White or Moana, Disney sets out to do the impossible: a female lead persevering and evolving in a magical and animated way. As the princesses' characters have evolved, so have the delivery media of 2D animation and live-action retellings of classics.

Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, also known as Walt’s princesses, helped the studio become the blueprint for storytelling through magical 2D animation and story development. The second generation of princesses, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, and Pocahontas, mimicked the Broadway musical format that gave each princess their own voice. With the popularity of 3D animation came yet a new generation of princesses who were even more versatile: Elsa, Anna, Moana, and Tiana were...

Disney movies use animal companions to teach young audiences lessons about compassion and friendship, while also adding emotion and humor to the stories.

Disney princesses are often paired with animal companions, but some are better than others in terms of how loyal and trusted they are. The studio has been making movies about princesses for decades, and while each of them is unique, they do follow some tropes. That said, there's no denying that animal companions have added significant value to some of the best Disney animated movies. Sidekicks in Disney movies come in various forms. It's common for a princess to have an animal companion, but sometimes, the loyal and trusted friend could be something else entirely,...

Once Upon a Studio Nodded to Dinosaur
Image
Disney's Once Upon a Studio featured a nod to 100 years of their feature-length movies. Many notable faces were present like Snow White and Stitch, but the short also nodded to characters from Dinosaur. While darker than most Disney movies, Dinosaur was far ahead of its time and showed that the studio could tackle darker themes with a hint of hope.

Among a cavalcade of cameos, Disney’s Once Upon a Studio called back to a movie far ahead of its time. Celebrating 100 years of Disney, it’s no surprise the studio would reflect on how far it has come, what it accomplished, and the characters that changed animation forever. Dinosaur may have faded into obscurity, but like the incredible animals that inspired it, it left behind a legacy that time didn't fully appreciate until long after its heyday.

Premiering in 2023, Once Upon a Studio came as part of the Disney100 celebration,...

The Official Disney Princess Rules, Explained
Image
Over the years, Disney has released many, many movies that turned into great classics. And in those movies, they featured characters of all sorts. However, it is safe to say that a large amount of Disney's popularity stems from one particular group of characters that stands out from the rest: princesses. Not only are they the company's most distinctive characters, but they are also the ones that sell the most merchandising. While each one of them has her own unique story and comes from a different background, there are many things they have in common, ranging from their love stories to the adorable animal sidekicks that always keep them company.

Fortunately, as the world has evolved, so have Disney princesses, who turned into the heroines of their own tales and no longer need to be saved by men. Characters like Merida and Moana, for instance, are an inspiration for girls and boys around the world.

Most Spoiled Movie Characters
Image
In nearly every feature film, there is at least one character who viewers aspire to imitate. These morally upstanding individuals almost always embody admirable values. On the other hand, spoiled characters in comedic or family films aren't a new phenomenon. These individuals create humor or an obstacle for the protagonist. Other times, these entitled characters serve as an example of what not to become.

Some films, like Cars, introduce bratty or egocentric protagonists who inevitably undergo some form of personal growth by the end. Other characters, like Darla Dimple in Disney's Cats Don't Dance, serve as blatant antagonists and cannot be redeemed. Whether the audience roots for these characters to change or eagerly awaits their demise, there's no doubt that the unadulterated attention bestowed upon these movie characters has made them rotten to the core.

Most Believable Disney Movie Romances
Image
Disney movie romances have a knack for making couples fall in love practically overnight. While most pairings don't have very long to get to know each other, that doesn't mean they can't produce some seriously believable romantic chemistry.

Audiences are convinced love stories like Jasmine and Aladdin from Aladdin are real, even though both characters exist in a make-believe world. Other couples like Belle and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast have longer than a few days to develop offscreen, yet their onscreen romance is still very brief. Nonetheless, these moments are so entrenched with love, respect, and caring that it's impossible not to become smitten with these Disney pairings. No matter how long these characters have to fall in love, their onscreen romance is the most believable part of their fantasy genre.

When Disney Lorcana's Second Set Releases - Set 2 Release Date, Early Access, Cards
Image
Disney Lorcana's second set of cards is set to release later this year. As with The First Chapter, the Set 2 cards will be available in local hobby stores about two weeks early. Although unconfirmed, Set 2 cards will likely feature Disney characters not included in the first set, like Dumbo, Bambi, and popular princesses like Tiana and Snow White.

With the first set of Disney Lorcana cards in pre-release and already in people's hands, many eyes are already pointing to the release date for its second set of cards. The Tcg from Ravensburger has already proven to be popular, and even ahead of The First Chapter's full launch, a release date for Disney Lorcana's Set 2 cards (no official title has been given) has been previously announced. In fact, assuming no delays take place, Disney Lorcana's next set should arrive later this year, with early access to cards once again starting a few weeks ahead of time.

Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #9Miles Morales’ most recent battle has been made all the more deadly thanks to the young Spider-Man’s classic Spider-Sense being on the fritz. Princess and the Frog Had Controversial Beginnings at Disney
Image
In 2006, Disney announced its return to hand-drawn animation with The Princess and the Frog, then titled: The Frog Princess. This would be the first film in which Disney would showcase an African American Princess in its animated film canon. The Wonderful World of Disney produced a TV version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella on November 2, 1997, starring the pop star Brandy in the title role. However, Disney had yet to include a black heroine in its popular Disney Princess line of movies and merchandising. Princess and the Frog had its wide release in the United States on December 11, 2009, but the movie was not without controversy during its development.

Disney employed a time-tested creative team of John Musker and Ron Clements, who wrote and directed The Little Mermaid, to draft the script. But the initial drafts were not without their share of criticism once the public began to get wind of some of the details.

Annecy Opens on Note of Artistic Defiance as Disney Premieres Centenary Short ‘Once Upon a Studio’
Image
Three days after a barbarous playground attack left the lakeside town in grief and shock, and in an amphitheater facing the public park where the tragedy occurred, the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival inaugurated this year’s edition with a show of solidarity and communal defiance.

“In response to barbarity, this festival will hold up creativity and artistic perspective,” said event organizer Dominique Puthod as he addressed the lively crowd. “You will bring color and wonder to the eyes of young and old alike, on bruised and battered paper, as a tribute to life.”

“The best response to this tragedy is to live even more forcefully and more intensely,” added Annecy mayor François Astorg. “With this conviction art and culture celebrates life, and enables us to change the world to make it a better place.”

With those rousing words, the animation showcase kicked off what promises to be a banner edition,...

Bruce Willis Takes Daughters Mabel Ray & Evelyn Penn Willis To Disneyland & Rides Splash Mountain
Image
Bruce Willis‘ wife, Emma Heming Willis, shared a video of the family’s recent trip to Disneyland in California.

Emma, who married Willis in 2009, has been posting family photos and videos, sometimes alongside Willis’ ex-wife Demi Moore, 60, and her daughters Rumer, 34, Scout, 31, and Tallulah, 29. The two families have often been seen together publicly after the actor was diagnosed with aphasia in March 2022.

Last month, they celebrated Mother’s Day together after Rumer’s daughter was born this year.

In the Instagram clip, Willis, 68, can be seen riding the Splash Mountain attraction with his daughters, Mabel Ray Willis and Evelyn Penn Willis. He puts his arm around one of them and says, “You better watch out, I think we’re going to go again.”

The trip comes after Willis’ family announced his diagnosis in February 2023 of frontotemporal dementia (Ftd), a progressive brain disease that can have similar symptoms to Alzheimer’s.

Live-Action Moana Makes 5 Other Disney Remakes More Likely
Image
It's no secret that Disney has been on a live-action-remake kick, but the announcement that Moana will be its next big adaptation opens up the possibility for other more recent animated movies. Most films remade thus far have been Disney's classics, which benefited from a more modern angle. This left many assuming their newer projects wouldn't see a live-action version for at least another decade. However, others will likely follow if Disney has selected Moana as a viable option.

In an adorable video featuring his two young daughters, Dwayne Johnson announced a Moana remake is in the early stages of production. The actor will be taking on the role of Maui again after only six years, which is the soonest that the House of Mouse has made a live-action adaptation. Previously, it had been assumed that Disney's 3D animated movies wouldn't receive a remake since part of the appeal is...
