Stephen Colbert Worried for Santa After New Jersey Politician Asks to Down UFOs: ‘Hope You Have a Kevlar Sleigh’ | Video
Image
As panic continues to surround the unidentified drones flying over New Jersey, one of the state’s politicians asked for permission this week to start downing unidentified flying objects at will. So, at this point, Stephen Colbert is pretty worried for Santa Claus.

During his monologue on Monday night, Colbert had a laugh at the panic from politicians in particular. Governor Larry Hogan posted a video on X, still popularly referred to as Twitter, about “dozens of large drones in the sky above my residence,” only for users to add a community note explaining that was he was seeing was very clearly a constellation.

“Fair enough, but that was not Hogan’s only sighting,” Colbert joked. “He later posted: ‘Oh my God, there’s a giant ladle coming for me! And a smaller ladle too, like pouring into the bigger one!'”

The late night host was even more tickled...

Politicians and Pundits Escalate Dangerous Drone Hysteria
Image
December is a month of twinkling lights and heavy air traffic, which seem to have collided in the most curious phenomenon of this holiday season: a sudden, unfounded panic that remotely controlled drones are patrolling the night skies up and down the eastern coast of the U.S.

A month ago, law enforcement officials in northern New Jersey revealed that they were investigating reports of drones flying overhead at night, stressing in a statement that there was “no known threat to public safety.” They also cautioned against believing or spreading...

Trump Blew Off Disaster Relief Requests From Washington, Other States
Image
Donald Trump refused a request for federal disaster relief funds from Washington Gov. Jay Inslee in 2020 after wildfires tore through the eastern portion of the states, Politico’s E&e News reports.

The dispute between the former president and Democratic governor adds yet another entry to Trump’s record of injecting partisan politics into disaster response efforts — all while he attempts to accuse President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of intentionally withholding aid from Republican areas affected by hurricanes in the southeastern United States.

According to E&e News,...

Image
Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” which welcomed back Jon Stewart as one of its hosts this year, will continue its election year tradition of taking the show on the road to the national political conventions this summer, Variety can confirm.

The extent of Stewart’s involvement at the two conventions has not yet been determined, but Comedy Central has made it official that “The Daily Show” will take its “Indecision 2024” coverage to Milwaukee, Wisc., from July 15 to July 18 for a full week of shows during the Republican National Convention. The following month, “The Daily Show” will set up shop in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention from August 19 to August 22.

GOP Senate Candidate’s Error-Laden Memoir Villainized Baltimore, Freddie Gray

This story was produced in partnership with The Garrison Project, an independent, nonpartisan organization addressing the crisis of mass incarceration and policing.

Maryland’s former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is running for U.S. Senate in a state that’s not just reliably blue, but in a deep blue moment. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Gov. Wes Moore are both Black Democrats who have garnered national media attention and support from President Joe Biden following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, an event that prompted a wave of...

No Labels Gives Up on Dream of Centrist 2024 Ticket No One Wanted
Image
The centrist group No Labels is scrapping its plan to offer a third-party choice in the 2024 election after failing to recruit a credible presidential candidate to lead the ticket.

“Americans remain more open to an independent presidential run, and hungrier for unifying national leadership, than ever before,” the organization said in a statement. “But No Labels has always said we would only offer our ballot line to a ticket if we could identify candidates with a credible path to winning the White House. No such candidates emerged, so the responsible...

Global Situation Room Expands News Podcast Production with Situation Room Studios
Barack Obama
The Global Situation Room, Inc. (Gsr) is significantly scaling its production of news podcasts with the creation of a new division of the firm called Situation Room Studios. Led by former Bloomberg Executive Producer Christine Baratta, the Studios will build on Gsr’s past success in creating award-winning, top-ranked policy shows with the backing of companies, foundations, and organizations that care deeply about engaging on the most important stories of our time.

“In our experience, the podcasts that often make the most news and reach the largest audiences are not being made by news outlets,” said Gsr Founder and President Brett Bruen. “Instead, it’s those that tell the most authentic stories and uplift trusted voices that unearth new insights while truly beginning to drive conversations forward.”

According to a recent Pew Research report just one-in-five listeners say they listen to a podcast that’s connected to a news organization.

Image
Barack Obama will appear as a guest on the Nov. 17 episode of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Variety has learned exclusively. The episode airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m.

In conversation with Noah, the former president will discuss the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum and critical issues facing America and the world today. The interview will be Obama’s third with Noah, and his first in-studio. Hogan released a statement explaining how the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project petitioning him to pardon Cooper led to the decision to pardon others.

Trump Finally Acknowledges New Administration Will Be Inaugurated

President Donald Trump admitted that soon he will not be president, ending a months-long effort to overturn the results of a free and fair election. Trump’s admission, however, only comes after a riotous mob of his supporters — egged on by him — stormed into the Capitol to stage an insurrection, threatening the safety of everyone inside and leaving four people dead.

“Congress has certified the results, and a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th,” Trump said in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday night. “My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth,...

Nancy Pelosi Says If Donald Trump Isn’t Removed Via 25th Amendment, “Congress May Be Prepared To Move Forward With Impeachment”
Image
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office.

If they don’t, she told reporters on Thursday: “Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment. That is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus and the American people.”

She added: “While it is only 13 days left, any day can be a horror show.”

Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20, but Pelosi did not give a timeline for Pence to respond. “I don’t think it will take long to get an answer from the Vice President,” she said.

Earlier on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Trump to be removed immediately joining with others in the party who have urged such an action. Some Republicans have as well, including Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who told reporters...

Even in Defeat, Trumpism Isn’t Going Anywhere
Image
As the mad king raged at Savannah Guthrie for having the gall to question him about his conspiracy mongering, mask trutherism, and failure to even pretend to manage the coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the country, the wishcasting texts and tweets began anew.

When this is over, can we get our Grand Ol’ Party party back?

As an O.G. Never Trumper, this is a question that I get a lot — from miserable GOP consultants, fellow ostracized Republicans, bewildered members of the political media, and liberals craving an opposition they can at least understand.

Maryland Allows Movie Theaters to Reopen on Friday

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Tuesday that movie theaters will be allowed to reopen in the state on Friday, in time for the release of “Tenet.”

Maryland follows New Jersey, which announced on Monday that its theaters could also reopen on Friday.

Theaters and other indoor entertainment venues in Maryland will be limited to 50% capacity, or 100 people, whichever is less. Outdoor entertainment venues are allowed to have up to 250 people, or 50% capacity, whichever is less. The new order takes effect at 5 p.m. on Friday.

“The entertainment industry… put together very safe reopening plans,” Hogan said at a press conference. “All the states around us have done this already. We believe we’re able to move safely forward. We’re just slowly entering Phase 3. We’re going to see how that goes before we lift all the capacity restrictions.”

Republican Larry Hogan, America’s Most Popular Governor, Has Some Advice for Trump
Image
Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of Maryland, was on his own. It was early April and Covid-19 infections were spiking. Hogan needed a dramatic increase in testing capacity if his state had any hope of tracking and slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus before it swamped the hospitals and led to thousands of unnecessary deaths.

Hogan knew that the federal government could marshal the nation’s manufacturing power to speed up the production of test kits, swabs, reagents, and other diagnostic materials. Instead, the Trump administration had downplayed the coronavirus outbreak,...

“It Is A Matter Of Life And Death”: Donald Trump’s Disinfectant Comments Still Trigger Alarm Even After He Claimed He Was Being Sarcastic
Nearly 24 hours after President Donald Trump suggested injecting humans with disinfectant as a possible treatment for coronavirus, his comments continued to cause great concern among health professionals.

Trump earlier on Friday that he was being sarcastic when, at Thursday’s briefing, he listened to research on how disinfectants can kill the virus on surfaces and then suggesting testing to see if it would work on humans. He asked it there was “a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning.”

The Centers for Disease Control sent out a warning about using household cleaners and disinfectants.

“That’s Not True”: ABC News’ Jon Karl Objects To Donald Trump’s Gripes About “Bad Reporting” On His Coronavirus Response
As President Donald Trump again griped that the news media has been too fixated on the negative in covering his administration’s response to the coronavirus, ABC News’ chief White House correspondent had enough of it.

After the president, at his Wednesday briefing, started to grouse that there was a lot of “bad reporting out there,” Karl interjected, “That’s not true. That’s not true.”

Trump’s attacks on the media are a regular feature of his nightly briefings, but what is less common is when a reporter calls him out so blatantly.

The exchange occurred just as Trump was telling those in the briefing room, “You people aren’t satisfied.

Donald Trump Pulls 180, Orders Flags Lowered For Murdered Media
President Donald Trump is expected this morning to order flags to be lowered in honor of Capital Gazette staffers murdered last week. The decision would come one day after the mayor of Annapolis, Maryland, announced that Trump’s White House nixed his ask to so honor the five members of the newspaper killed last week.

On Monday, the Gazette interviewed Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley who said he was upset that Trump denied the request, wondering “is there a cutoff for tragedy?”

“This was an attack on the press. It was an attack on freedom of speech,” Buckley observed, answering his own question as to why the Trump turn-down.

“It’s just as important as any other tragedy.”

This morning, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pitched a different storyline, saying the reversal comes after Trump learned of the mayor’s request.

Joseph Crowley, Member of House Democratic Leadership, Defeated in Primary
A 28-year-old first-time progressive candidate, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-n.Y.) on Tuesday, scoring one of the year’s biggest political upsets.

Crowley, who was a member of the Democratic leadership and was considered a possible successor to Nancy Pelosi, has been in the House since 1999, and has represented the 14th district since 2013. He was the chair of the House Democratic Caucus since 2017.

Ocasio-Cortez‘s victory was quickly compared to 2014 primary upset in which Dave Brat ousted Eric Cantor, then the No. 2 Republican in the House, from his Virginia district seat.

NY1 captured Ocasio-Cortez’s reaction as she realized she was winning the race.
