Image
Baahubali 2 Compared To The Lion King? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Indian cinema was never the same after S.S. Rajamouli’s epic period actioner Baahubali: The Beginning and its sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion came out. The visionary director raised the bar for emotionally charged storytelling, epic war action scenes, and powerful performances. The films not only captivated the audience in a big way but also set the box office on fire, breaking myriad records.

But an interesting thing happened after the release of the second film, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Some viewers pointed out surprising similarities between the Baabubali sequel and the cult animated film The Lion King, which came out in 1994.

Similarity No.1: Basic Plot

The first similarity was the basic plot itself, which revolves around how a rightful and deserving heir returns to rule the kingdom after many years and to take the throne back from a tyrannical ruler.

Shakun Batra Speaks To Subhash K Jha As They Revisit The Quirky Kareena-Imran Romcom Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu
Image
Director Shakun Batra talks to Subhash K Jha as they take a look back at the quirky romantic comedy 2012’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, which starred the unique and brilliant jodi of Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

In 2012, within two weeks, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions gave us two diametrically opposite genres of cinema from two debutant directors. If Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath took us back to the grand formalistic revenge drama of the 1970s. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu takes us into the future of Bollywood, where actors don’t have to sing. They don’t have to act. They just have to be as normal as people in love tend to be.

Shakun Batra’s interesting, though flawed, is comprised of a series of elegantly written, confident, but never in-your-face scenes about what happens when two opposites meet in a city as all-embracing as Las Vegas. Of course,...

Kathryn Hahn is Rumored For Mother Gothel in Disney's 'Tangled' Remake
Image
Marvel's Agatha All Along star, Kathryn Hahn, is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel in Disney's Tangled remake. The original 2010 musical is a retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm tale where a young woman with extraordinarily long hair, Rapunzel, escapes her tower and journeys through the world. The live-action remake was announced last year, but since then, Disney has released very few details. The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey is rumored to be directing, but there is still no official casting. This has left fans with ample time to speculate and whip up dream casts for the film.

Hahn made a lasting impression on Disney+ audiences as the diabolical Agatha Harkness in WandaVision. Following the success of the series, Marvel developed a spin-off series for the witch, 2024's Agatha All Along. With even more singing and scheming, Hahn's performance catapulted the minor Marvel Comics character to one of...

“Mithya The Darker Chapter Gives A Good Name To Sequels” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Applause Entertainment’s Mithya: The Darker Chapter , survives ‘The Curse Of The Second Season’ and even manages to be better than the first part, in parts. Huma Qureshi Who is at best, capable of a competent performance , pull herself out of her comfort zone to play a lecturer Juhi Adhikari of Hindi literature. As for her adversary, let’s just say Avantika Dassani doesn’t bring disrepute to the culture of nepotism. She is a better actress than her mother Bhagyashree, which admittedly is not saying much.

If mother Bhagyashree did Main Pyar Kiya, daughter Avantika’s project could well be titled Maine Plan Kiya. What a schemer her Rhea Rajguru is! In the first season Rhea caught her funky Teacher Didi making out in the college washroom . In the current season Juhi is caught plagiarizing another man’s book wholesale.

Mean Girls 2024 Ending Explained
Image
20 years after the original film, a musical movie adaptation of Mean Girls was released, providing a new twist to the 2004 classic and making some ending changes. Mean Girls was first adapted into a popular musical for the Broadway stage in 2017. This has translated into positive reviews for the Mean Girls musical film due to the fun musical numbers, popular source material, and strong performances. Though some changes were made between all three versions of Mean Girls, it remains a faithful adaptation full of familiar jokes that are still laugh-out-loud funny two decades later.

Mean Girls was originally meant to be released solely for streaming on Paramount+ but was given a theatrical release. Mean Girls can be streamed on the service, and The Mean Girls soundtrack is available on all major music streaming platforms. Mean Girls modernizes both the 2004 movie and 2017 stage production, utilizing new developments in social media and trends...

9-Months On, And It's Obvious That Mean Girls Dropped The Ball With This Original Character
Image
The 2024 reboot of Mean Girls has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, one shared opinion between many cinemagoers is that the character Aaron Samuels was too underdeveloped. Aaron was supposed to be the main romantic interest for the films protagonist, Cady. However, lack of screen time and storylines for the character made for him to become dry and boring. Although the character is just written as someone for Cady and Regina to fight over, there was no charisma or romantic connection between the characters. This made Aaron and Cady's relationship at the end of the movie unbelievable.

As the film is a musical, the fact that Aaron didnt sing at all really limited his connection with Cady as most of the character connections in the film were built through song, whether it was Renee Rapp singing "World Burn" or Avantika singing "Sexy". Although it was clear that Cady...

Adapted from Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel, the much better titled Horrorscope, Tarot is the feature directorial debut from writers/directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. When they run out of beer, the group search the mansion for hidden alcohol only to discover strange tarot cards within the basement.

Released on May 3, 2024, Tarot is an American horror film that exceeded box office expectations based on its poor reviews. This Petrifying 'Tarot' Scene Will Make You Question Its PG-13 Rating
Image
Following a well-worn formula and offering a milieu of genre thrills, Tarot can be described as the perfect slumber party flick that doesn't take itself too seriously. Each death in this astrological slasher is wildly absurd, gruesomely creative, and pleasantly theatrical, but not necessarily outright terrifying. Though some do come close, like Paige's (Avantika Vandanapu) stint in the Magician's box, or the glimpses of the Hangman on the bridge. One particular scene, however, undeniably surpasses the others in terms of genuinely scaring us, as it creeps up on us unawares. It is when Jacob Batalon's Paxton hops into an elevator and sees his grotesque fortune unfold that we are confronted with real terror in Tarot. Directors Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen masterfully executed the jarring and horrifying atmosphere in this scene, enhanced by the fear-stricken performance by Batalon and an unforgettable Fool.

'Tarot' Ending Explained Who Survives the Horoscope Curse?
Image
From inventive death sequences to sinister creature design, Tarot is certainly the surprise package of 2024's horror offerings. The movie pushes the boundaries of PG-13 horror and is catching a wide audience in its curse on Netflix. With a cast of both recognizable faces and lesser-known names, including the likes of Avantika, Jacob Batalon, and Harriet Slater, Tarot takes an interesting premise and turns into something unexpectedly chilling. When a group of friends finds an old tarot deck at their AirBnB, they decide to have their spiritual friend, Haley (Slater), read their horoscopes. The movie then follows a Final Destination-inspired structure as the group gets killed off one by one in ways eerily similar to their readings in a supernatural slasher-type format. The explanation behind the force executing their deaths eventually reveals itself as the result of a big ol' dump of lore. Did anyone manage to escape the astrological...

Tarot Cast & Character Guide
Image
The movie Tarot features a group of college friends being hunted by a deck of tarot cards. Despite negative reviews, Tarot surpassed its budget. The actors bring tension and scare to the film, with notable performances by Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Jacob Batalon, and others in key roles.

The scares and drama of Tarot follow a group of college friends who are perfectly brought to life by their actors. The movie is about seven friends being hunted and killed by a deck of tarot cards, which they use against their better judgment. The cast itself is relatively small, and by Tarot's ending, several deaths and shocking twists have happened.

Though reviews of Tarot claim the characters are thin, the cast is ultimately able to execute the film effectively to create tense moments and scares. Though it has many negative ratings, Tarot was able to quintuple its budget, in part because of the cast's performances.

Tarot Trends on Netflix Despite Awful 18% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Fate has finally dealt Tarot a winning hand with audiences, at least on streaming. The quite disappointing horror film, which stars Spider-Man alum Jacob Batalon, is currently trending at No. 3 on Netflix following its online debut on Thursday, August 1. Directors Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohens attempt at scaring up audiences theatrically resulted in mixed results. First, its important to note that Tarot did well financially while playing in cinemas.

With a budget of only $8 million, Tarot made $18.8 million domestically (per Box Office Mojo), but the macabre movie did even better business overseas. Internationally, the Batalon-led flick made an additional $30.3 million. And Tarot did particularly well in both Spain ($2.4 million) and France ($2.2 million) en route to a worldwide total of $49.1 million. Thats over six times its production budget definitely a win.

This 2024 underrated horror movie is now on Netflix and it deserves all the love
Image
Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.

Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.

Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

Recent Sleeper Hit Horror Film Lands on Netflix After Box Office Success
Image
Released in theaters on May 3, 2024, Tarot was a sleeper hit at the box office. Now, as of Aug. 1, the horror movie is available for subscribers to stream on Netflix.

With a low budget of around $8 million, the film grossed $49 million worldwide, making Tarot a big financial success. Its haul of nearly $50 million at the global box office is higher than other notable horror films of recent years like Abigail ($42 million), Thanksgiving ($46 million), and Barbarian ($45 million). Tarot was released on DVD and Blu-ray in July for the physical media collectors, and its arrival on Netflix will see the movie reach a wider audience following its successful run in theaters.

18% Horror Movie With MCU & Mean Girls Stars Is Now Streaming After Great $49 Million Box Office
Image
Box office success doesn't always mean critical acclaim - Tarot made money but earned poor reviews. Tarot's cast and spooky trailer led to high expectations, but the lack of originality disappointed viewers. Despite mixed reviews, Tarot's success at the box office secured its spot on Netflix's list of horror hits.

Although 2024's Tarot received generally poor reviews, the young adult horror movie was a box office success, and now it's available to stream. In general, the two things that indicate whether a movie is good or not are its critical reaction and its box office. At times, these two areas align. For example, 2023's Talk to Me grossed $92 million and also received a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, sometimes a movie's reviews and its box office oppose each other completely. In that case, the movie falls somewhere in the middle between great and terrible.

When it comes to Tarot,...

Tarot has more than quintupled its budget and become one of the highest-grossing horror movies of the year. How To Watch Tarot At Home
Image
Look, far be it from me to tell a young, diverse, and predominantly non-male group of horror-movie protagonists what to do. But if I were ever in a situation that involved dabbling with the supernatural in highly creepy settings while also breaking long-established rules involved with the aforementioned dabbling, I would simply not do that. Of course, there wouldn't be a movie for us to talk about here in that hypothetical, but that ain't my problem!

For better or worse (you can probably guess which one it is), nobody involved with the production of "Tarot" bothered to listen to my advice. For this group of college kids who committed the faux pas of all faux pas by messing with a tarot deck that wasn't theirs to begin with, the end result was ... pretty messy, to put it mildly. Writer/directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (along with co-writer Nicholas Adams...

‘Tarot’ Review
Image
Stars: Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Jacob Batalon, Avantika, Humberly González, Wolfgang Novogratz, Larsen Thompson | Written and Directed by Spenser Cohen, Anna Halberg

Adapted from Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel, the much better titled Horrorscope, Tarot is the feature directorial debut from writers/directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. The story opens at a rented mansion inhabited by a group of college students celebrating a birthday, although tensions are high due to a recent break-up within the group. When they run out of beer, the group search the mansion for hidden alcohol only to discover strange tarot cards within the basement.

Despite saying that it is a sacred rule of Tarot to not use someone else’s deck, Hayley (Harriet Slater) agrees to use the strange deck to read everyone else’s horoscopes. One by one, their horoscopes come true as they meet their ends, with it becoming clear that the group are...

New Horror Movie With 21% Rt Score Nearly Triples Budget At The Box Office In Just 10 Days
Image
Tarot has grossed a cumulative $20 million worldwide in its second weekend. This has more than tripled the horror movie's $8 million budget. Despite a 21% Rotten Tomatoes score, Tarot is likely already turning a profit.

Tarot has accomplished a huge box office feat despite a cavalcade of negative reviews. The new horror movie, which stars Harriet Slater, Avantika, and Jacob Batalon, is based on the 1992 Nicholas Adams novel Horrorscope and follows a group of college students who play with a cursed deck of tarot cards that dooms them to die in twisted ways based on the cards that were pulled in their readings. The movie has earned a thoroughly Rotten 21% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, a number that is based on 43 different critics' reviews.

Per Variety, the Tarot release is projected to earn an additional $3.4 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters.

New Horror Movie Tarot Looks Like A Box Office Bomb – But It Could Be A Sneaky Hit
Image
There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.

"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Screen Gems Horror Movie ‘Tarot’ Debuts With $10 Million Worldwide
Image
Sony’s Screen Gems brought horror back to the box office with the Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) over the weekend. The film debuted in theaters nationwide on Thursday, May 2, but how did it stack up against other new releases for the genre this year?

Directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg, Tarot debuted in the #4 spot on the domestic box office charts, scaring up $6.5 million and giving it the third lowest opening for a wide release horror movie at the box office here in 2024 so far. For the sake of comparison, here are the domestic opening weekend numbers for this year’s big screen horror offerings…

Night Swim – $11.7 million Abigail – $10.2 million Imaginary – $9.9 million The First Omen – $8.3 million Tarot – $6.5 million Immaculate – $5.3 million Lisa Frankenstein – $3.6 million

Worldwide, Tarot‘s box office total sits at $10.2 million. The good news for Screen Gems is that the horror movie’s reported production budget was just $8 million,...

‘Tarot’ Review: Spine-Snapping Melodrama Does Haunted Party Games Proud
Image
A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.

Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. If open-minded audiences buy into this transparently trendy gimmick and its melodramatic narrative execution, what feels like a spiritual “Final Destination” spinoff — told by way of an Urban Outfitters’ small gifts display — could very well...

New Horror Movie With 8% Rotten Tomatoes Score Debuts With Strong Box Office (& Nearly Recoups Budget)
Image
Despite an 8% Rotten Tomatoes score, Tarot is projected to take No. 4 in its opening weekend with a domestic gross of $6.25 million. This total has already nearly recouped the horror movie's $8 million budget. It shouldn't be difficult for the movie to hit its break-even point, though it may not make a huge profit.

Tarot is on its way to recouping its budget despite only earning an 8% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The new horror movie, which was written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, is based on the 1992 Nicholas Adams novel Horrorscope and follows a group of friends trying to break a deadly curse that they accidentally unleashed from a deck of tarot cards. The movie features an ensemble cast that includes Pennyworth's Harriet Slater, Spider-Man: No Way Home's Jacob Batalon, and Avantika, who played Karen in the 2024 Mean Girls movie musical.

Spider-Man Star's New Horror Movie Delivers Terrifyingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Jacob Batalon's new horror movie Tarot failed to impress critics with an abysmal 8% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The plot of Tarot revolves around a group of friends who face death after meddling with tarot readings, leading to a race against fate. Despite Tarot's disappointing performance, Batalon's previous success in Reginald the Vampire suggests this could be just a minor setback.

Spider-Man star Jacob Batalons new horror movie Tarot has failed to capitalize on the actors previous strong run of reviews, and has instead landed the actor his lowest scoring movie with an unspeakable 8% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. Coming off the success of the MCUs Spider-Man franchise, as his series Reginald the Vampire, Tarots failure to gain much praise at all is a harsh reminder of how easy it can be to go from hero to zero in the movie game.

Tarot Review: A Scary Concept Cannot Overcome a Bad Story
Image
Horror movies can grow from any place. That’s one of the most exciting aspects of the genre – any idea can become scary as hell in the right hands. With flicks like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation surprising audiences, it’s not unreasonable to find great hits from even thin concepts. Tarot, the latest Sony and Screen Gems horror film, seeks to replicate this success. Unfortunately, despite great creature designs, Tarot stumbles over its own feet at every opportunity. The result is not only frustrating but an absolute slog.

Tarot Plot

During a weekend in the Catskills, a group of young college students celebrate Elsie’s (Larsen Thompson) birthday. After the group runs out of alcohol, they stumble upon a deck of tarot cards. Haley (Harriet Slater) uses a combination of horoscopes and Tarot to read their futures. Paxton (Jacob Batalon), Paige (Avantika), Grant (Adain Bradley), Madelyn (Humberly González...
