On Tuesday, Jason Singer won $22,401 on Jeopardy four years after his wife, Susan McMillan, claimed a $35,600 cash prize of her own. Several media outlets celebrated the couple as the show's first married champions. It turns out, they weren't.
Here's a brief explainer on how the sweet story turned sour.
How We Got Here
Before Singer's win, publications were touting the history-making potential. For example, a June 30 headline from People proclaimed: "Married Jeopardy! Contestants Hope to Be First Husband and Wife Winners: 'History Is at Stake'"
Then after his win, ABC's Good Morning America ran a segment on the couple with a slight caveat, stating on air, "The Jeopardy team is confirming that Jason and Susan may just be the first-ever already married Jeopardy champions." Merv Griffin's iconic American game show revolutionized the quiz format upon its debut in 1964. Unlike other programs in the genre, Jeopardy's contestants are presented with general knowledge clues in the form of answers and must respond in the form of questions. The show's original daytime run concluded in 1975, followed by a brief syndicated weekly edition and a revival, The All-New Jeopardy, in 1978-79. The modern-day syndicated version produced by Sony Pictures Television launched in 1984 and continues to air.
Art Fleming hosted all versions from 1964 to 1979, and Alex Trebek took the helm in 1984 until his death due to pancreatic cancer in 2020. Several guest hosts later filled the role, including former contestant Ken Jennings, actress Mayim Bialik, and series producer Mike Richards. Jennings became the permanent host in 2023.

Many Jeopardy! Masters fans agree that the tournament lacked one thing this year — James Holzhauer. The season’s ratings took a nose dive compared to the last two when Holzhauer appeared on both. The 2025 tournament feaured 2024 Masters champion Victoria Groce, returning finalist Yogesh Raut, 2025 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions winner Neilesh Vinjamuri, Toc finalists Adriana Harmeyer and Isaac Hirsch, 2025 Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament champion Matt Amodio, Jit finalists Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer, and one of the biggest Jeopardy! winners of all-time Brad Rutter, who hadn’t been on the Alex Trebek stage since 2020. Holzhauer won Season 1, so he was invited back for Season 2. He was also in the top three on Season 2, so he was asked back for Season 3 but declined. During the April Live Jeopardy! Tour, the game show‘s bosses Michael Davies and Sarah Whitcomb-Foss shared that he was invited back, but said he was going to sit this one out.

Jeopardy! Masters is fully underway, but there's renewed attention on the buzzer after fans noticed something amid Brad Rutter's return to the franchise. Jeopardy! Masters season 3 is currently airing, and has seen the return of such contestants as Brad, Victoria Groce, Yogesh Raut, Neilesh Vinjamuri, Matt Amodio, Juveria Zaheer, Roger Craig, Isaac Hirsch and Adriana Harmeyer. Jeopardy! executive producer Michael Davies explained who was brought in instead and why it was such a significant pick. Davies talked about the replacement on the Jeopardy! website in the J-Buzz article. Holzhauer is the 2023 Jeopardy! Former Jeopardy! contestants have been opening up about the rules and regulations when it comes to the show’s dress code, including what is and isn’t allowed. The discussion started on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum when one user asked, “James Holzhauer mentioned how he likes wearing sweaters as it makes him feel comfortable. So what exactly are the rules and limits when it comes to clothing?” Several contestants chimed in, including 2025 Tournament of Champions competitor Alison Betts, who wrote, “I’ll tell you a secret. On my second day I switched to tennis shoes because I knew I’d be at the far podium and no one would see my feet. I also promptly lost.” Recent contestant Anise K. Strong-Morse replied, “Nobody in our contestant’s room was wearing heels, I noticed, and generally not even dress shoes. I brought flats in case but wore my regular nice teaching sandals.

Jeopardy! fans were shocked when James Holzhauer wasn’t a part of the lineup for the 2025 Jeopardy! Masters. The champion came in third during the last Masters, so he was an automatic invite. The executive producers of the game show — Sarah Whitcomb-Foss and Michael Davies — went over the new Masters season during the latest episode of the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, which was filmed in Washington D.C. on the live tour. During that update, they explained why Holzhauer is not a part of Season 3. Masters Season 3 begins on Wednesday, April 30, at 9/8c on ABC. Regular Jeopardy! still airs before the tournament, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune airing in the middle of them. Even with nine players this time, instead of six, Holzhauer still wasn’t in the lineup. “As always, our top three Masters are guaranteed an invitation to the next Masters,” Whitcomb-Foss said. Victoria Groce and Yogesh Raut, the 2024 Masters winner and runner-up,...
