It may sound strange — for those of us who lived through it, it's strange to remember — but back before "28 Days Later" was released in 2002 in the UK (and 2003 in the US), the zombie subgenre was all but dead. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have been stipulating that the creatures they created are not technically zombies since the film's release, yet the film's rage virus operates in a highly similar fashion to the version of the zombie created and popularized by George A. Romero in 1968's "Night of the Living Dead." While the subgenre of zombie films never entirely ceased after the release of Romero's first movie, it experienced a lull during the 1990s, as genre filmmakers eschewed the typical tropes inherent in the subgenre in favor of experimentation, as seen in films like "Dead Alive," "Cemetery Man," and "My Boyfriend's Back.

During the movie's events, as they search for Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), Spike (Alfie Williams) and his mother, Isla (Comer), come across a pregnant woman (played by Celi Crossland) infected with the Rage virus. They help the infected woman give birth to her daughter, also named Isla, who is surprisingly brought into the world uninfected. It's one of the biggest 28 Years Later twists that changes the lore behind the infected.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Comer felt that the baby twist would probably mark a "huge shift or introduction of something going forward." She argued that the zombie birthing an uninfected baby provides some glimmer of hope for the people in the world of 28 Years Later. Read her response below:

28 Years Later 3's filming start window and director Danny Boyle's involvement has been revealed ahead of the new trilogy's launch. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Boyle, who were both behind the original 28 Days Later from 2002, the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film follows an all-new group of survivors living on a small island community in the UK. Their story will be told across an entire trilogy, continuing in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, which has already been shot.

Now, according to Empire, Boyle will be back to direct the third 28 Years Later. However, filming won't begin until after he's seen the responses to the first one.

In a new interview with Empire, producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that Cillian Murphy doesn't actually appear in 28 Years Later, though he may return for future sequels. However, Murphy is involved as an executive producer. Read Macdonald's full comments below:

[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.
