House Of The Dragon Season 3 Casts Annie Shapero As One Of The Saga's Fiercest Warriors, Alysanne Blackwood
Image
HBO announced that filming is officially underway on the third season of House of the Dragon back in April, and we now have some fairly late casting news that fans of George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood have been eagerly anticipating.

Deadline reports that Annie Shapero will play Alysanne Blackwood, aka Black Aly, in season 3. In the source material, Blackwood is a mighty warrior who ends up siding with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in the Dance of the Dragons before marrying Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor.)

In the season 2 finale, Rhaenyra and Daemon (Matt Smith) put their differences aside and joined forces as they prepared to launch a full-scale attack on King's Landing.

We'll be meeting quite a few new faces in season 3, with James Norton (Happy Valley) previously joining the cast as Ormund Hightower, along with Tommy Flanagan as Ser Roderick Dustin, aka "Roddy the Ruin," and...

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Finally Casts Alysanne Blackwood
Image
House of the DragonSeason 3 has finally cast one of the "most fierce" warriors from George R. R. Martin's best-selling work. As filming for the highly-anticipated third season of the Game of Thrones prequel continues, it has now been revealed who will be playing a legendary character from the saga.

Deadline reports that Annie Shapero (Red Skies) has been cast as Alysanne Blackwood in House of the Dragon Season 3. She will not be a series regular, but is expected to appear in five episodes of the upcoming season. The character plays a key role in Fire & Blood, so fans of the book have been waiting for the casting for quite some time. Details remain scarce on the upcoming season, but Shapero will make her debut as Alysanne when House of the Dragon returns to HBO sometime in 2026.

Alysanne "Black Aly" Blackwood is an important character from Fire & Blood, and could...

“Jaw-to-the-floor shock…”: Emilia Clarke Found Out True Extent of Nudity For ‘Game of Thrones’ Role In the Most Uncomfortable Way
Image
Before becoming the almighty Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke was just an actress preparing for her first big break, without quite realizing how exposed that break would be.

As Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, Clarke’s performance became iconic, but the nudity that came with the role wasn’t exactly spelled out upfront. Yep, in a throwback interview, she revealed just how shocking the script turned out to be, stating, (via HeyUGuys),

When I first auditioned, they said there might be a bit of nudity (a smidgen!) and it was only on a family holiday prior to filming that I got the full final draft of the script through and jaw-to-the-floor shock and petrifying moment.

Of course, her portrayal of Daenerys evolved from a frightened, powerless girl to a fierce leader claiming her destiny, only to meet her end abruptly. While her role demanded emotional depth and physical vulnerability,...

House of the Dragon video shows how Harrenhal was made for season 2
Image
Few television shows have special effects on the level of House of the Dragon, HBO's lavish Game of Thrones prequel series. Set during the height of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros, the show has imposing castles, over a dozen fire-breathing dragons, armies on the march and more. It all looks as good as anything in the movies, and sometimes even better; I doubt we'll see another dragon-on-dragon battle that can compete with the one from "The Red Dragon and the Gold" until the third season comes along.

Wētā FX, the New Zealand-based visual effects company formed by Peter Jackson, is one of the best in the business. They worked on House of the Dragon season 2 and have been sharing videos on their YouTube channel, breaking down things like how they created dragons like Seasmoke and Vermithor.

Now we're going sightseeing to the Gods Eye, because one of their latest videos...

How To Train Your Dragon's Scariest Scene Learned A Big Lesson From Game Of Thrones
Image
Every so often, family-friendly films venture into dark territory that might have young viewers burying their faces into the arms of their parents -- or, in the case of this writer in his early years, frantically pressing fast-forward whenever a chained-up Sloth screamed to the heavens in "The Goonies." When it comes to the new live-action version of "How to Train Your Dragon," it's likely kids might take the former option in the film's final act. Going against his son's wishes, Stoick (Gerard Butler reprising his role from the original animated movie) heads to the dragon's nest only to come face to ferocious face with the behemoth that is The Red Death and it might be nightmare fuel for youngsters.

Standing at almost 100 feet tall and with a monstrous wingspan to match, the Red Death seems like one of the toughest undertakings in the film simply by being the biggest character in it.

Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) films House of the Dragon season 3 in Wales
Image
Cameras have been rolling on the third season of House of the Dragon for months now. There's been a lot of work done on a major action sequence called the Battle of the Gullet that will occur very early in the season. We've also gotten looks at impressive sets built for King's Landing and the town of Tumbleton, a new location we'll be visiting. But that's just the start.

Recently, shooting started up in Dinorwig Quarry in Wales, where the show will be doing a lot of location work. In season 2, parts of Wales stood in for the Vale as well as the area around the crumbling castle of Harrenhal in the Riverlands. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) was at Harrenhal when we left him in season 2, so it's no shock to hear that he's in Wales filming new stuff, as reported by House the Dragons.

We can't know exactly what...

One Of Game Of Thrones' Oldest Targaryen Theories Gets Enthusiastic Response From House Of The Dragon Cast
Image
One of the biggest Game of Thrones theories was just addressed by the cast of House of the Dragon, and some of them think it makes sense. After the groundbreaking fantasy series came to an end in 2019, HBO quickly began developing Game of Thrones spinoffs, the first of which became the critically acclaimed House of the Dragon, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of Dragons that nearly destroyed House Targaryen generations before the flagship takes place. Characters who are maesters — scholars and doctors in Westerosi society — continue to appear in House of the Dragon as advisors to the royal family.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, when asked about the long-standing conspiracy theory that the maesters orchestrated the downfall of House Targaryen and magic over the centuries of their rule, the House of the Dragon cast was mostly on board. Cast members including Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke...

House of the Dragon Season 3: Matt Smith’s Popularity Might Shift a Key Event to Season 4 for an Obvious Reason
Image
House of the Dragon’s upcoming season promises a whole slew of important key events during the Dance of the Dragons. The Battle of the Gullet may have been postponed to Season 3, but fans have been assured that it will happen in the very beginning.

Following this bloody skirmish, we will also get a couple of tense confrontations before we get to the most climactic fight above the Gods Eye. This will involve Daemon and Aemond, two of the most important Targaryens and definitely the crowd favorites.

Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen might still make it to Season 4 Matt Smith in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Since its premiere in 2022, House of the Dragon has amassed millions of fans around the world. Out of all the cast members, Matt Smith is the most charismatic as evident in his performance and the audience’s reception of his character.

“Kind of Momentous”: ‘House of the Dragon’ Star Reveals Why It’s So Important That Rhaenyra & Daemon Have Each Other’s Backs
Image
Heavy lies the head that wears the crown. This is most definitely true of Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) in the HBO series, House of the Dragon. Queen Alicent's (Olivia Cooke) mistake has set off a chain of events that have since brought Rhaenyra and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) to blows as the contest for the Iron Throne continues. Aegon sees little need for proper counsel, a flaw that is evident in his erratic decision-making. Meanwhile, his half-sister values counsel, albeit some she doesn't always agree with. This brings her into conflict with the men on her council, even with her King-Consort, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). In the aftermath of one of those explosive verbal confrontations where Rhaenyra finally tells Daemon that she can't trust him, he departs for Harrenhal and remains there for a greater part of Season 2.

After several unnatural sightings and a vision of the future in the godswood...

House of the Dragon star Ewan Mitchell (Aemond) films scene with key book character
Image
When last we left things in the second season of House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) was still ensconced at the crumbling castle of Harrenhal with a collection of soliders from the Riverlands. His nephew Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) was preparing to march out of King's Landing to take Daemon down, both because he's a major threat to Aemond's war effort, and because Aemond has always had a yen to be better than his uncle.

If you've read George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, you know basically how things will go. Aemond will march on Harrenhal, but when he gets there, Daemon will be gone; it's all part of a ruse to lure Aemond away from King's Landing so that his half-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) can take the Iron Throne while he and his army are away. Aemond then sets up shop in Harrenhal where he encounters...

House of the Dragon and The Last of Us both have a cowardice problem
Image
HBO kick-started the age of the great TV antihero. Tony Soprano was a mobster who ordered the deaths of several people throughout the run of the show, helping The Sopranos become a generational TV show. The siblings on Succession were constantly trying to one-up each other with escalating acts of amorality, and we couldn't stop watching. Game of Thrones gave us a bench full of fascinating scoundrels, liars and killers, from the Hound to Arya Stark to pretty much every member of the Lannister family, and we loved them all. When I think of HBO, I think of a network unafraid to plumb the darker depths of human nature, with a lot of great TV series to show for it.

The newest generation of HBO shows includes big-budget hits like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, both of which are made in the image of Game of Thrones.

After Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) makes an ill-fated decision to ride Sunfyre into the throngs of war, alongside his brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys end up sparing with the young, misguided ruler. Ships, towns and King's Landing: New pics from the set of House of the Dragon season 3
Image
HBO is filming the third season of House of the Dragon as we speak. Season 2 ended with the Seven Kingdoms in the midst of a civil war, with some huge clashes right around the corner. Season 3 will kick off with the Battle of the Gullet, a battle fought on sea between Corlys Velaryon's fleet and a pirate fleet captained by Sharako Lohar. And if you've read George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, you know that some winged warriors might also show up...

The cast and crew of House of the Dragon have been talking up the Battle of the Gullet as something very special. Abubakar Salim, who plays Corlys' illegitimate son Alyn of Hull, will be heavily involved. As Salim put it on Twitter/X, "fighting is tough."

Obviously, it's submitted the show for Best Drama Series, the top award of the night. It's submitted 10 actors for consideration. Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) is the only actor they've put forward for one of the lead categories. Seven others have been submitted in supporting actor categories: Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) and Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen). Production on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is well underway. New House Of The Dragon Art Imagines Aegon Retaking The Iron Throne
Image
New House of the Dragonart imagines Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) reclaiming the Iron Throne after his bitter season 2 escape. With House of the Dragon season 3 still approximately a year away from completion, there are many months left before the first trailer reveals the aftermath of the tense season finale. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) are now fully aligned against Aegon, who was forced to flee King's Landing after Aemond's (Ewan Mitchell) brutal attack. With the Blacks moving on the city, all of Westeros remains embroiled in a bitter war.

The narrative is not necessarily in Aegon's favor, but Instagram artist @didoleonina sought to imagine a future in which Aegon wins back his crown. The stunning portrait imagines that Aegon survives his burns, returns to King's Landing, and takes back the throne. The image features Aegon's healed burns, which still remain across half of his face. He...

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Is Officially in Production as Work On the Battle of the Gullet Is Underway in New Image
Image
House of the Dragon returned us to Westeros after a controversial ending brought the curtain down on Game of Thrones Season 8 and the reign of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). However, the way Season 2 of the prequel series ended left a decent section of its fanbase demanding more. As many expected to see the famous Battle of the Gullet play out before the season bade farewell. The show's coming season will bring the famed naval battle on-screen in all its brutish glory. Abubakar Salim, who plays Alyn of Hull, one of the bastard sons of Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), took to social media to offer the first look at the battle to come. Salim's post is simple and captures a close-up of a well-crafted armor from House Velaryon with the sigil of Lord Corlys, a silver seahorse, emblazoned on the breastplate.

Aegon II Targaryen has "one of the best stories" in House of the Dragon season 3
Image
It's been a good week to be a House of the Dragon fan. On Monday, HBO confirmed that the third season of its Game of Thrones prequel series had begun filming. At the same time, two new cast members were announced: Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin aka Roddy the Ruin, and Dan Fogler as Lord Torrhen Manderly. And on top of that, showrunner Ryan Condal sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss everything from the Battle of the Gullet to George R.R. Martin's critical blog post of last year. It's been a busy few days!

We're still poring through Condal's words about season 3, and today it's time to shine the light on none other than King Aegon II Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney. Aegon was one of the surprise breakout characters of season 2; I never particularly liked him in Martin's book Fire & Blood, but Glynn-Carney infused the conflicted king with a sense of tragedy,...

“He’s a Big Feature”: Ryan Condal Teases Prince Daeron's Arrival in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3
Image
Finally. There is some hope regarding when we might return to Westeros to watch the Targaryen civil war continue to unfurl. Accompanied by a new look at Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra Targaryen, it has been announced that House of the Dragon Season 3 is officially in production. Showrunner Ryan Condal will be returning to help bring to life, as authentically as possible, the events in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. The coming season will most likely take on a more brutal face, as the Dance of Dragons gets ever more intense. This means the arrival of new characters to help drive the narrative further, and one of those new characters is Prince Daeron Targaryen, the third son and youngest son of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

House of the Dragon Showrunner Responds to George R.R. Martin's Criticism of the Show
Image
House of the Dragon marked the first spin-off in the Game of Thrones franchise, and the series received positive reviews. However, author George R.R. Martin criticized the changes in Season 2.

Although Martin praised House of the Dragon Season 2's "magnificent" beginning, the author later posted a blog review in late August 2024 to address "everything that's gone wrong with House of the Dragon." He published a follow-up several days later in early September, criticizing the adaptation and the character omissions and changes. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal addressed his criticism for the first time.

"It was disappointing," Condal admitted about Martin's words. "I will simply say I've been a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire for almost 25 years now, and working on the show has been truly one of the great privileges of, not only my career as a writer,...

Image
House of the Dragon began in 2022 and after two seasons, it has received praise for its production, story, and cast performances. And while not every moment from the series has been universally lauded, HBO can still consider this series a hit.

Namely, we know that the series has been renewed for a third season, but we can now confirm that production on that third season has started, and that some new cast members have been added.

Tommy Flanagan gets added to the House of the Dragon season 3 cast

A third season of House of the Dragon is on the way, with another spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to debut on HBO this year. There have been a number of Game of Thrones projects that have been scrapped, including a Jon Snow series, which Kit Harington has said is now on the shelf. “Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” Harington said. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.” Although the Jon Snow spinoff is no longer in development, HBO’s Casey Bloys said he would be open to revisiting it down the line.

This smallfolk character returns for House of the Dragon season 3
Image
Filming on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon begins this month, and we're hearing lots about casting, some of it from official channels, some of it because cast member post pictures of characters lists without thinking through whether that's a good idea. The point is that things are moving, and that's exciting!

We have some more minor casting news courtesy of @westerosies on X/Twitter, who always do a great job of keeping tabs on the comings and goings of the Seven Kingdoms. According to them, Michelle Bonnard will return as Sylvi the brothel madam in House of the Dragon season 3.

Who is Sylvi the brothel madam, you might be asking? Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) visited her in season 2; in season 1 we learn she may have been the first person he was ever intimate with. She was around for the food riot...

After 2 Seasons, This Easy-to-Miss Detail Is Still House of the Dragon’s Best Motif

This article contains spoilers from Fire & Blood and possible plotlines for future House of the Dragon seasons

In the sprawling, dragon-filled world of HBO Max's House of the Dragon, power struggles and family betrayals often manifest in grand, fiery displays. Yet, amid the spectacle, one of the show's most effective storytelling devices remains a subtle prop easily overlooked by casual viewers: the Small Council balls.

These seemingly insignificant marble-like orbs, which council members place before themselves when arriving for meetings, have evolved into one of the show's most brilliant narrative tools. Far from mere set decoration, these balls are a visual barometer of loyalty, respect, and the changing power dynamics that define the realm as it spirals toward civil war.

The Silent Language of Power Is a Microcosm of Court Politics

When King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) presided over his Small Council in Season 1, the ritual had a clear purpose.
