Four years after the end of Modern Family on ABC, actor Eric Stonestreet is reflecting on the spinoff that didn't come to be. While Stonestreet was hoping to co-star in a spinoff alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson which would have followed Cam and Mitch, the series was passed on by the network.
Per Deadline, Stonestreet discussed his desired Modern Family spinoff during an interview with Graham Bensinger. The actor recalled how there were plans to potentially develop a Cam and Mitch spinoff starting with a pilot script Stonestreet felt was really strong. Ultimately, the series was not picked up, a decision that Stonestreet suggested could be due to the perception that he and Ferguson were "the old guys," and thus undeserving of their own spinoff.

Every actor, even the ones who go on to become the biggest stars in the world, has to start somewhere. Breaking into the world of Hollywood is a truly difficult business, and it involves taking tiny roles that audiences aren't supposed to remember.
There's been many a time when someone has been watching an old TV show or movie and suddenly spotted a familiar face. It's always good to see an actor be appreciated for all their hard work trying to make it to the top.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson played the high-strung but loveable Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family throughout its 11-season run. Now, the openly gay actor has revealed that his role on the series protected him from homophobic abuse.
Speaking alongside comedian Nicole Byer on his Dinner's on Me Podcast, Ferguson explained what his day-to-day life had been like before landing the Modern Family role. "I had been in Las Vegas a few years earlier and I sort of got gay bashed a little bit," he said. "This was before It wasn't anything violent, but it was definitely like, there was negative energy coming at me from a couple that felt uncomfortable around me and my then-boyfriend."

Another Modern Family alum has expressed interest in a revival project. Sarah Hyland, who portrayed Haley Dunphy, recently revealed one condition that would need to be met before she would consider returning for a reboot of the beloved ABC sitcom.
Speaking with People at the 2024 Drama Desk Awards, Hyland shared that she "would want to see a script first" before signing on for a Modern Family reunion project. "I think creatively for me, I would want to know what was going on with Haley. I want to see her career back and stuff and her creativity and I want her to be able to do both," she added. "[I want to see Haley] do what [her mom] Claire [Dunphy] then set out to do and did as an amazing mother as well as businesswoman and CEO. And I would really love to see that creative side back for Haley. So yeah, I don't know."

It's not uncommon for fans to get invested in a new, interesting TV show, only for the series to go off the rails during its run. While this has happened to programs like Riverdale, Game of Thrones, and Prison Break, which all went downhill to varying degrees, a few great TV shows have never suffered from a bad season.
With masterful writers, talented actors, and consistently strong storylines, some TV series have maintained their high quality through multiple seasons. Popular and iconic shows like Breaking Bad and Friends kept fans interested through every episode. The likes of The Simpsons were so close to maintaining a perfect legacy only to be tarnished by a few of their many and more recent seasons.

Casting changes in TV shows can be risky, especially when it comes to child actors. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons successfully replaced the original actresses and portrayed Lily consistently in Modern Family. Recasting a character can work well if the new actor brings their own strengths and stays true to the character's traits. Skylar Astin's portrayal of Greg in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend added a fresh dynamic to the show while staying true to the themes of magical realism. Sometimes, recasting leads to groundbreaking representation. Eartha Kitt's performance as Catwoman in Batman was a landmark moment for Black women in leading superhero roles, bringing new life to the character and raising the overall quality of the show.
