Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

On Oct. 4, Sam Wineman filed a sensational lawsuit, detailing a hostile work environment on the set of the AMC-produced docuseries “Queer for Fear,” where he allegedly endured bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation.
At the heart of the producer’s complaint is Wineman’s allegation that Bryan Fuller — the creator of shows like “Hannibal” and “Pushing Daisies” and a major player in the “Star Trek” franchise — sexually harassed and assaulted Wineman during production. He claims the misconduct took place after the two began working together in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic. Fuller is a defendant in the complaint alongside AMC and its video-on-demand service Shudder.
But 14 people involved with the Emmy-nominated series are pushing back on Wineman’s #MeToo claims and his characterization of a toxic workplace. The sources, nine of whom went on the record with Variety, had a wide range of responsibilities on...

Last week, producer and director Sam Wineman filed a lawsuit against Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and AMC Networks including accusations of sexual assault, creating a hostile work environment and retaliation on the docuseries Queer For Fear.
Wineman was a producer and director for Shudder’s four-part series Queer For Fear: The History Of Queer Horror.
Wineman accused Fuller, an executive on the series, of sexual assault and asserted that AMC executives had ignored his allegations and instead punished him when he voiced his discomfort.
In a filing with the L.A. Superior Court, Wineman made specific accusations that Fuller was abusive to Wineman while he worked on the 2022 docuseries. He also claimed that his termination from the series in August 2021 was in response to the comments he made to higher-ups about Fuller’s “unlawful behavior and comments.”

“Queer for Fear” executive producer Bryan Fuller has been sued for alleged sexual harassment and sexual assault on the set of the 2021 Shudder docuseries. An attorney for the “Hannibal” creator said he intends to countersue for defamation and malicious prosecution.
Sam Wineman, a producer on the series about the history of LGBTQ characters and actors in horror movies, claimed that from 2020 to 2022, Fuller “cultivated and maintained a hostile work environment” that included “harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation.”
In Wineman’s suit, which filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court, he alleged that “Mr. Fuller sexually assaulted plaintiff several times” throughout the production of the series. AMC Networks, its horror streaming site Shudder and Steakhaus Productions are also named in the suit, which was filed by Good Gustafson Aumais Llp of Los Angeles.

Sam Wineman, a producer and director on Shudder’s fall 2022 Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror docuseries, has filed a lawsuit that names AMC Networks, Shudder, executive producer Bryan Fuller and others as defendants, and alleges, among other things, quid pro quo sexual harassment (by Fuller), intentional infliction of emotional distress, and the cultivation of a hostile work environment.
Fuller’s lawyer, in response, characterized Wineman’s complaint as a “fictitious story” and promised that a defamation lawsuit will be headed Wineman’s way.

Bryan Fuller, the creator of shows including “Hannibal” and “American Gods,” was accused in a lawsuit on Wednesday of sexually harassing a fellow producer on an AMC docuseries about queer horror.
Fuller is accused of making constant references to masturbation, engaging in casual bullying, and creating a hostile work environment. The plaintiff, Sam Wineman, alleges that Fuller also repeatedly held him from behind to “crack his back,” during which he would press his penis against Wineman’s buttocks.
Fuller and Wineman are both gay. They worked together on the series “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” a four-part docuseries that was released on AMC’s Shudder streaming service in 2022.
Wineman alleges that he was removed from the project in August 2021, about four weeks after complaining about Fuller’s conduct.

To celebrate Shudder’s upcoming release of a documentary about LGBTQ horror film history, actors and creators of the genre got together during Comic-Con@Home to discuss why horror is queer and when they first fell in love with the genre.
“Child’s Play” franchise creator Don Mancini, “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller, director of the Shudder documentary Sam Wineman, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actor Lachlan Watson and co-host of “Attack of the Queerwolf” podcast Nay Bever joined moderator Jordan Crucchiola on Thursday’s panel titled “Horror Is Queer.”
Crucchiola started the panel with some foundation language: What defines queer horror? Wineman explained that he breaks it down into four key components: 1) explicit representation 2) queer coding, which is the implication that the character is queer, 3) whether queer folk see themselves in horror and 4) just having a queer creator.

As is to be expected, San Diego Comic Con is another in a long list of fandom mainstays forced to pivot to a virtual platform due to Covid-19 this year. The good news, however, is that if Shudder’s “Horror is Queer” panel is any indication, we’re still in for some fantastic content.
Horror journalist Jordan Crucchiola moderated the event, which serves as something of a preamble (or an amuse bouche for all of the Fannibals) to Shudder’s upcoming queer horror documentary directed by panelist Sam Wineman. Joining him is Don Mancini, whose Child’s Play franchise has evolved over the past three decades to incorporate themes about sexuality and gender. Also on board is Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, who over the course of three seasons allowed all of the queer subtext between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham to come flowing to the surface. Welcome back for an all-new installment of Let’s Scare Bryan to Death. This month, I’m talking with Sam Wineman, who you may know as a director, musician, writer, podcaster, and master chef. I may have made that last one up, but what I’m saying is the dude is all-around talented. He’s also just been announced as the director for an upcoming documentary on the history of queer horror to be released on Shudder.
I was lucky enough to catch up with Wineman to chat about the 1982 slasher film Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. Directed by William Asher, the film follows Billy (Jimmy McNichol), a high school senior getting ready to graduate and hopefully go off to college with his girlfriend, Julie (Julia Duffy). Alas, this doesn’t sit well with his aunt Cheryl (Susan Tyrrell), whose attachment to him is progressing nicely into obsession. When her attempt...
