Crystal Moselle’s series Betty has been cancelled by HBO, Deadline has confirmed.

“We will not be moving forward with a third season of Betty,” the network said in a statement. “We are very grateful for the collaboration with Crystal and our incredible cast — their fearless exploration of the world of New York City’s skate culture will remain a beautiful emblem of friendship and community.”

Betty was a teen comedy based on Moselle’s acclaimed 2018 film, Skate Kitchen. It centered on a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding.

The series starred Dede Lovelace, Kabrina Adams, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Rachelle Vinberg, Alexander Cooper, Katerina Tannenbaum, and more, airing for 12 episodes in total. It returned for its second season in June, after debuting on HBO in May of last year.

Last year Crystal Moselle dazzled audiences with “Betty,” a six-episode adaptation of her 2018 feature film “Skate Kitchen.” Now, the crew is back for Season 2 and there looks to be plenty more skateboarding, as well as an increased desire to find relationships and individual identity.

As the trailer shows, the same New York-based female skateboarders are back with a desire to make a new video showing off their skills. Unfortunately for them, they’ve just lost the lease to their building. Each of the girls is going through struggles with regards to finding love or a job, and through it all the bigger examination is: When is skateboarding just enough?

Although “The L Word: Generation Q” may have tried desperately to speak to a “new generation” of queer women and non-binary folks, fresher creative voices quickly rose to the top in its place. (Though people still watched). Showtime’s “Work in Progress” was the best queer comedy of the year, Netflix’s “Feel Good” was an unexpected delight, and “Vida” is returning just in time for queer audiences to catch up on the best show about queer women of color on TV. Yet another contender released a promising first trailer today: “Betty” is a stylish and youthful portrait of Brooklyn teen skaters that already appears extremely queer.

The six-part half-hour arrives on HBO from filmmaker Crystal Moselle, who quickly made waves in 2015 with her her riveting documentary hybrid “The Wolfpack.” “Betty” is adapted from her second feature, the similarly hybridized “Skate Kitchen,” which followed a group of teenage girl skaters in New York City.

HBO has given a series order to the skateboarding comedy “Betty” from “Skate Kitchen” director Crystal Moselle and “Love” co-creator Lesley Arfin.

Inspired by Moselle’s critically-acclaimed 2018 Sundance hit “Skate Kitchen,” the six-episode series is set against the backdrop of New York City and follows “a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.”

Rachelle Vinberg will reprise her role from the film, starring in the series as Camille, a young skater who “wants to be down with the dudes and has fought hard for the small space she’s carved out with them.” She’ll be joined in the series by a few “Skate Kitchen” co-stars, including Nina Moran as Kirt, Kabrina Adams (aka Moonbear) as Honeybear, Dede Lovelace as Janay and Ajani Russell as Indigo.

Three years in the making, Joe Cole starrer A Prayer Before Dawn will start its theatrical release this weekend. The A24 title, which debuted at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, is based on a non-fiction book written by Billy Moore, played by Cole in the feature, which opens in select cities Friday. The Wolfpack filmmaker Crystal Moselle returns with her narrative feature debut, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at Sundance where Magnolia Pictures caught the film in January. The film follows a group of young women who she met on the subway in a story that has some parallel to their real lives. And Oscilloscope is opening Madeline’s Madeline with newcomer Helena Howard along with Molly Parker and Miranda July. Also a Sundance debut, the company said it has been championed by critics, which it hopes will overcome skepticism by some exhibitors. The company said its trailer, however, has reached ‘cult’ status.

The first trailer for Skate Kitchen has arrived. The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year and provides a look at a group of female skaters who live and breath skateboarding. This also brings Jaden Smith back to the big screen in what looks to be a relatively low-profile role. This trailer gives us our first real look at the movie, which looks like it might be the exact opposite of what one might expect when they hear about a skateboarding movie. This looks to be a much more emotional, character driven drama that happens to feature passionate skaters at its center, as opposed to being a hollow showcase for skateboarding tricks.

This morning both the Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced this year’s programme for Sundance Film Festival: London. Female stories and filmmakers shine brightly in this years line-up as seven out of the twelve films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: London were directed by women. Along with a thrilling array of female leads on screen, the selection champions female voices and highlights some of the broad and excellent women-led work direct from Sundance Utah.

The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Women in Film takes centre stage at this year’s event, as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continue to highlight inequality in the film industry.

In its first pick-up of an American film, Charades has acquired international sales rights to Crystal Moselle’s recent Sundance Next entry Skate Kitchen.

Moselle’s first narrative feature since she announced her arrival in 2015 with Park City documentary The Wolfpack was just acquired for North America by Magnolia Pictures.

Skate Kitchen follows a Long Island teenager whose life changes when she befriends a group of female skateboarders in New York.

Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Kabrina Adams, Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo and Brenn Lorenzo star alongside Elizabeth Rodriguez and Jaden Smith.

Charades negotiated the deal with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. Lizzie Nastro and Izabella Tzenkova produced the Bow and Arrow Entertainment and Rt Features presentation in association with Pulse Films and Kotva Films, along with Moselle, Julia Nottingham, Rodrigo Teixeira, Michael Sherman and Matthew Perniciaro.

The Wolfpack director makes narrative debut.

An untitled girl skateboarder feature starring Jaden Smith and Elizabeth Rodriguez and a number of skateboarders from the Skate Kitchen group has wrapped in New York.

Crystal Moselle (pictured), who won the 2015 Sundance documentary grand jury award for The Wolfpack, directs the coming-of-age story about a lonely suburban teenager whose life changes when she befriends a group of girl skateboarders.

The story is inspired by events in the lives of real skateboarders Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Kabrina Adams, and Jules Lorenzo, all of whom appear in the film. Moselle, Aslihan Unaldi and Jennifer Silverman wrote the screenplay.

Moselle focused on Vinberg, Lovelace, Moran, Russell and Adams – members of the Skate Kitchen – in her short film That One Day (pictured), which debuted in Venice last year.

Documentary filmmaker Crystal Moselle is finally turning her attentions to fiction, care of her first narrative feature, a currently untitled project centering around female skateboarders. The new film will star real New York City skateboarders Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Kabrina Adams, Jules Lorenzo, alongside actors Jaden Smith and Elizabeth Rodriguez, and is billed as a “raw” coming-of-age tale set in the city’s skating underground.

Vinberg, Lovelace, Moran, Russell, and Adams are members of the Skate Kitchen, a group of female skaters who were the subject of Moselle’s recent short film “That One Day,” which debuted at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.
