Broadway grosses fell 7 percent compared to the prior week, as the industry saw its first week without Sunset Blvd., which had been a high-grossing show in its final months.
The musical played its final performance at the St. James Theatre on July 20 and was the highest grossing show that week. Still, Wicked took back its reign as the highest grossing show last week with $2.4 million, followed by The Lion King with $2.2 million, Hamilton with $2.2 million (in the leadup to its 10-year-anniversary on Broadway), Aladdin with $1.6 million and Mj with $1.4 million. Overall attendance was down 4 percent from the prior week.
Pirates! The Penzance Musical played its final performance at the Todd Haimes Theatre on July 27 and saw the second highest gross of its run, at $567,633. Cabaret will end its New York run Oct. 19 after about 14 months on Broadway.
The closing notice comes after the production undertook a large-scale remodeling of the August Wilson Theatre and has mounted a costly, immersive production, with reports of the show being capitalized for up to $24 million. With the early closing notice, and bumpy grosses throughout its run, the show will likely exit Broadway without recouping.
In the final 13 weeks of the run, Billy Porter will take over as the Emcee and Marisha Wallace will take over as Sally Bowles starting July 22. The two reprise the roles they played in the production in London’s West End.
The musical opened on Broadway in April 2024, starring Gayle Rankin and Eddie Redmayne, who first played the role in the West End. Since then, the production has brought in several big-name replacements, including Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho and Orville Peck and Eva Noblezada,...

Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club will close on Sunday, October 19, producers announced today, ending a 14-month run that was spotty at the box office and almost certainly will leave investors short from recouping the revival’s estimated $23 million-plus costs.
Also today, producers announced that Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace will be the show’s final Emcee and Sally Bowles, with the two actors taking over the roles on Tuesday, July 22.
Producers have not revealed or confirmed the show’s capitalization amount or whether the show has recouped or is expected to recoup.

With today's announcement of the Tony Awards nominations, Daniel Dae Kim has made history as the first Aapi nominee in the Lead Actor in a Play category. Kim was recognized for his performance in the revival of Yellow Face, where he plays a satirical version of playwright David Henry Hwang. Kim's nomination is also part of a record-setting year for Asian representation at the Tonys.
Bd Wong was the first actor of Asian descent to score a Tony. Coincidentally, his 1988 win for Featured Actor in a Play came courtesy of another Hwang play, M. Butterfly. Since then, Iranian performer Arian Moayed has competed in the same category, with nominations for Bengal Tiger in the Baghdad Zoo (2011) and A Doll’s House (2023). Paul Chahidi was nominated in the same race in 2014 for Twelfth Night, then Michael Aronov won the featured prize in 2017 for Oslo.

Since the announcement came in January that country music star Orville Peck will replace Adam Lambert as the next Emcee in Broadway’s Cabaret at the KitKat Club, the question in fans’ minds was whether he’ll perform with his trademark mask, perhaps somehow glitzed up to match Cabaret‘s outré style, or whether he’d ditch the trademark altogether.
The answer: Unmasked.

Orville Peck is headed to the Great White Way. Peck will be joining the KitKat Club as the Emcee in Broadway’s current Cabaret revival, replacing Adam Lambert.

He did, however, study at the London Academy of Dramatic Art, tour nationally with several musicals in his early 20s, and even made his West End debut in the farcical Peter Pan Goes Wrong in 2016. Plus, given his mask and old-school country showmanship, Peck knows his way around theatricality.
He’ll be joined by Tony winner Eva Noblezada (Hadestown) who will replace Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho in the role of Sally Bowles.

Within minutes of sitting down with each other at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, Reneé Rapp and Cynthia Erivo realize that they’re both Capricorns. They gush over how cosmic this meeting is, after years of mutual admiration from afar. “Now it all makes sense!” Erivo says. “A Capricorn is someone who knows their own self and what they want, what they will stand for, and what they will not. It’s always really fun and refreshing to see.” Rapp agrees: “You’re, verbatim, exactly the same way.

Broadway’s busy, busy spring of new shows came to an end today with this morning’s Tony nominations announcement, and while the impact, if any, of the nominations won’t be felt at the box office for a while, there were some indications last week about how things could pan out.
The Great Gatsby, for example, starring Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada, opened to mixed reviews and received only one Tony nod (for costumes) but already seems to be building an audience. Filling 98% of seats at the Broadway, the musical grossed $1,028,276 – and that’s with five heavily comped press performances and opening night.
Other recent arrivals scored some impressive numbers for the week ending April 28. Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, even with a Wednesday matinee canceled, took in $1,701,828, all seats filled. Illinoise, the dance musical set to Sufjan Stevens music, opened at the St. James with eight heavily comped press performances,...

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Close races and sharp elbows are likely when the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced Tuesday morning. With so many shows opening during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominators might still be clearing their minds — and maybe taking a moment to eat and breathe — as they ponder and re-ponder the 36 productions that opened on Broadway between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
Some of the nominations are no-brainers: The much-praised and hugely popular Merrily We Roll Along is a sure bet for all concerned, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, Here Lies Love, Water for Elephants, I’m looking at you.
A selection of categories will be read live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 am Et, and a full livestream of the announcements will follow at 9 a.m. Et on the official Tony Awards YouTube page.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

‘Tis the Broadway season of reinvention. Shaina Taub smartly retooled half of Suffs’s score since its off-Broadway premiere in 2022, allowing her jam-packed historical musical to shed some weight and soar. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins revisited the text of his 2014 play Appropriate, his subtle, meaningful edits transforming the work into a monster hit on Broadway. But he had a decade to do so and the play was already great.
Not so great, in contrast, was The Great Gatsby’s inauspicious world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, last October. Crafted initially as an international commission intended to be performed in translation for South Korean audiences, The Great Gatsby’s first soiree was kind of like the man himself, an impotent facsimile hiding behind pretty faces and loud voices. Even the gilded sets wobbled in New Jersey.
A hasty Broadway transfer was commercially understandable in a competitive landscape but artistically insane.

“I really wanted to discover what wasn’t there,” explains Jeremy Jordan when asked about his portrayal of the titular figure in “The Great Gatsby.” The actor is embodying the enigmatic Jay Gatsby in a Broadway musical adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The actor is interested in exploring the “romanticism” and “mania” that exist in this confounding figure who enchants Long Island in the 1920s. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The musical follows Nick Carraway (Noah Ricketts) who befriends the uber rich Gatsby after receiving an invitation to one of the socialite’s lavish Long Island parties. Gatsby isn’t just an extravagant host, however. He has his sights set on reclaiming his long lost love Daisy (Eva Noblezada), who happens to be Nick’s cousin. Gatsby machinations successfully lure Daisy back to him, but his secret misdeeds threaten to unravel the life he has so carefully created.

The Great Gatsby musical, the highest grossing show in Off-Broadway theater Paper Mill Playhouse’s history, will be coming to Broadway this spring.
The musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel will debut at The Broadway Theatre on April 25, the show’s lead producer Chunsoo Shin announced on Tuesday. Directed by Marc Bruni, Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada are set to reprise their Off-Broadway roles as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, with previews beginning March 29.
“I am passionate about producing this show because it provides a modern audience with the true essence of idealism that is expressed eloquently in the novel and now on stage,” said Shin in a statement. “The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece that grows and changes as it’s experienced by each new generation, in every culture, and people — and yet, still maintains its uniqueness, with its fascinating characters that burst with vitality.

A cause of death has not been revealed. His sudden passing came a year after he announced he would be stepping away from acting to seek treatment for a schizoaffective disorder, Playbill reported.
An alum of the University of Michigan Theatre Department, Peluso became known as a respected understudy on Broadway, first covering The Balladeer in the 2004 Tony-winning revival of Assassins, as Louis and Nicolas in Elton John’s Lestat , and all three leading male roles in Beautiful The Carole King Musical.
He played Sky in the 2008 Broadway production of Mamma Mia. He also starred and covered the role of Fiyero in the touring company of Wicked, and he starred in Off Broadway’s The Glorious Ones.

Changes are coming to the Greek underworld — at least as it appears on Broadway. Australian pop musician Betty Who and Tony nominee Phillip Boykin are set to take over the leading roles of Persephone and Hades, respectively, in the hit musical, Hadestown, starting Sept. 5.
The complex, fraught relationship between Persephone and Hades provides one of the two main storylines in Hadestown. In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Hades (technically her uncle) is allowed to abduct her and make her Queen of the Underworld. In Hadestown,...

According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five who are expected to receive Best Actress in a Musical nominations at this year’s Tony Awards are Victoria Clark (“Kimberly Akimbo”), Annaleigh Ashford (“Sweeney Todd”), Micaela Diamond (“Parade”), Sara Bareilles (“Into the Woods”), and Patina Miller (“Into the Woods”). However, there is a contender I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Adrianna Hicks (“Some Like It Hot”).
In this stage musical adaptation of Billy Wilder‘s 1959 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Hicks plays Sugar Kane, the lead singer of an all-girl band. While venturing out to San Diego, she develops a friendship with the band’s newest musicians who happen to be a pair of men disguising themselves as women to escape the mob. One of them in particular, Joe/Josephine, falls in love with Sugar. Hicks had huge...

The evening will also include a conversation with Polley and the playwrights, led by Tony Award nominee and Pulitzer Prize finalist Heidi Schreck. In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

When crafting the world of good luck and bad luck for “Luck,” director Peggy Holmes actually started by doing a lot of research into the title subject. “We had a development team do research on luck, icons, colors, numbers, all around the world. But there’s a very clear rule that we discovered in doing the research which is luck is random. You don’t know when it’s coming and you can’t create it,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
All this research was given to the film’s production designer Fred Warter who came back with a concept that Holmes was immediately taken with. “The very first image he did for the movie was two worlds sitting on opposite sides of a coin. Good luck on top and bad luck on the bottom. His brain...
