One of Christopher Walkens Best Roles Is This Recent British Dark Comedy Series
Image
Quick Links Christopher Walken Played Frank in The Outlaws Stephen Merchant Had to Fax Walken the Job Offer Walken Returned as a Guest for the Third Season

Christopher Walken is famed for his roles in big movies and shows that have international success. His career has spanned over 70 years, beginning acting as a child and continuing to perform today, with recent credits that include Dune: Part Two and The War with Grandpa. While he's an expected face to see in mega-hit movies, it's a little more surprising to see him star in a British dark comedy series. Nonetheless, Walken was perfectly cast in an original show called The Outlaws. There's certainly a risk when adding in such an actor among a cast of rising stars. It could seem that using someone like Walken is simply to draw in a bigger fan base without him actually fitting the narrative. Thankfully, this wasn't the case.

Jessica Gunning's Baby Reindeer Emmy Win Is A Great Reminder To Watch This Underrated 3-Year-Old Prime Video Comedy
Image
Jessica Gunning's breakout role as Martha Scott in Baby Reindeer has earned her an Emmy, and her win serves as a reminder that the English actress previously starred in a criminally underrated series from 2021. Gunning has been acting (on the screen) since 2007, starring in various TV shows, ranging from a guest appearance in Doctor Who to a recurring role in Law & Order: UK. However, Gunning rose to prominence when she was cast to play Martha in the cast of Baby Reindeer, a 2024 Netflix black comedy-drama miniseries.

Jessica Gunning won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 2024, beating Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).

With so many to now choose from, the task of any writer is to invent something fresh that will make their show leap out from the rest of the genre. The most iconic quotes are born out of either quick wit, intensity or even subtle moments that are unexpected. Many fans will recognize some of the following quotes, while others may be intrigued by the context.

Gamba added that the project was personal to him because he was born in Bristol, and he always wanted to go back and act there.

The star said that he connected with the stories and the characters.

The Outlaws: Stephen Merchant on His New Crime Comedy and Christopher Walken’s Omelet
Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and B.J. Novak in The Office (2005)
He co-created two iconic British comedies, The Office and Extras; starred in Hollywood movies including Logan and The Girl in the Spider’s Web; and directed Florence Pugh and The Rock in Fighting with my Family. For his next trick, Stephen Merchant along with Elgin James has created The Outlaws, an ensemble comedy about a group of low-level offenders brought together via community service.

Merchant himself stars in the show alongside Rhianne Barreto, Darren Boyd, Gamba Cole, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson and Christopher Walken as the misfit convicts.

We sat down with him to chat about British humor, comic book movies, and Christopher Walken’s cooking.

Where did the idea for The Outlaws come from?

My parents used to work for Bristol Community Service, and they would supervise offenders who were doing some time. I was always intrigued because it was such an unlikely bunch. There was an old guy who...

Hulu Releases ‘The Girl From Plainville’ Trailer Starring Elle Fanning (TV News Roundup)
Image
Hulu has released an official trailer for “The Girl From Plainville” — a limited series inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s “texting suicide” case.

Based on Jesse Barron’s Esquire article of the same name, “The Girl From Plainville” dives into Carter’s (Elle Fanning) relationship with Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan) and his following death, which led to her conviction of involuntary manslaughter.

“All he thought about was dying… I really just wanted to help him,” says Fanning’s Carter in the gripping trailer, which is full of unsettling text messages and moments both following and leading up to Roy’s death.

In addition to Fanning and Ryan, the series also stars Chloë Sevigny as Lynn Roy, Cara Buono as Gail Carter, Kai Lennox as David Carter and Norbert Leo Butz as Conrad Roy II.

Hailing from UCP of the Universal Studio Group, “The Girl From Plainville...

New US Trailer for 'The Outlaws' UK Comedy with Christopher Walken
Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, and Scott Glenn in Silverado (1985)
"We could use this money to do something real!" Amazon has revealed a new official US trailer for a British comedy series titled The Outlaws, finally arriving for streaming in the US on Prime Video this April. The first season already debuted in the UK on BBC last fall. Seven strangers from different walks of life forced together to finish a community payback sentence in Bristol. They're sent to clean up a derelict community center, until one day they discover a hidden bag of drug money. Will they all be able to agree on what to do with it? The Outlaws main cast features Stephen Merchant, Rhianne Barreto, Darren Boyd, Gamba Cole, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Charles Babalola, Isla Gie, with Christopher Walken. This looks kooky and amusing, though I'm not sure it has the right stuff to become a modern classic. They're already prepping Season 2 in the UK while...

First Look at Christopher Walken, ‘Poldark’ Star Eleanor Tomlinson in Stephen Merchant’s ‘The Outlaws’
Image
The BBC and Amazon have released new images of Christopher Walken (“Severance”) and “Poldark” star Eleanor Tomlinson in upcoming Stephen Merchant production “The Outlaws.”

The show, which is written and directed by Merchant (“Jojo Rabbit”), marks Walken’s first role in a British television series. In one of the first images from the show, (above) he can be seen in an orange high-vis jacket leaning against a graffiti-covered wall.

Tomlinson, meanwhile, swaps corsets and bosom-bearing gowns for ’80s style padded jackets and a trilby in “The Outlaws,” which was previously known as “The Offenders.”

The plot of the show focuses on seven strangers with disparate lives who find themselves thrown together as they finish a Community Payback scheme – which is a non-custodial sentence sometimes handed down for less severe crimes – in Bristol, in the South West of England. The scheme requires participants to wear high-vis orange vests as they carry out their tasks.

Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon Series ‘The Offenders’ Renewed For Second Season
Image
Exclusive: BBC One and Amazon’s Stephen Merchant series The Offenders has been renewed for a second season before the first has even been shot, executive producer Kenton Allen has revealed.

In an interview with Deadline, the Big Talk Productions CEO said that the two seasons are being filmed back-to-back in Bristol, southwest England, in an unexpected fillip for the comedy-drama after it was shut down in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Allen said filming on the six-part series, which will star Christopher Walken, was halted after just 12 days last March, at which point the BBC asked if Merchant would consider writing a second season.

This quickly snowballed into a green light for Season 2 after all parties agreed that it would make sense to shoot both seasons at the same time. Production got back underway in Bristol late last year and the shoot will run to October 2021 as Big...

‘Hanna’ Review: My So-Called Killing-Machine Life
Joe Wright
You may or may not have caught Joe Wright’s 2011 thriller Hanna. If not, we’ll give you a quick recap. Saoirse Ronan is a feral young woman living in the Bavarian forest with a former secret-ops agent played by Eric Bana. When she was a baby, he saved her from extermination — the kid was part of a government-sponsored experiment, genetic superiority, human weapons, yadda yadda yadda. A C.I.A. operative, i.e. Cate Blanchett as an obsessive-compulsive sociopath, is determined to hunt them down and kill them. Tom...

Esme Creed-Miles and Adam Bessa in Hanna (2019)
TV Review: ‘Hanna’
Esme Creed-Miles and Adam Bessa in Hanna (2019)
The 2011 film “Hanna” was a delicious surprise. Directed by prestige moviemaker Joe Wright, “Hanna” played like an artist’s frantic attempt to cram in all the wild impulses he wasn’t allowed elsewhere, while retaining a certain fundamental elegance. Saoirse Ronan played a teen trained from childhood to be a killing machine for reasons that never quite become clear. Engaged in cat-and-mouse warfare with Cate Blanchett’s compulsive CIA officer, Ronan’s Hanna sprinted through dazzlingly constructed frames as a propulsive techno score (composed by the Chemical Brothers) blared — and the movie never lost its balance or its control.

That filmic achievement, the ability to remain upright in the midst of mania, is what makes Amazon’s new series adaptation of “Hanna” so disappointing. The new show lacks the glimmering creativity of its source material, and, perversely enough, it manages to feel overstuffed despite its relative lack of inventive flourishes.
