Management firm 11Am NYC’s midtown Manhattan offices are abuzz on a Wednesday afternoon. Plaques for hit releases by A$AP Ferg and Lil TJay adorn the walls, and employees are moving about, hoping to help Queens rapper Bay Swag earn one of his own for his upcoming debut album, Damaged Thoughts (out July 25 on United Masters with a documentary to follow).

Lil Durk will remain in custody pending his October trial.
In a new ruling issued Monday, U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald declined to release the Grammy-winning rapper, born Durk Banks, on a new beefed-up bail proposal including $4.5 million and 24-hour home detention with electronic monitoring and private security.
“The main problem here is that, based on information in the sealed Pretrial Service Reports, the proffered funds are only a fraction of defendant’s net worth,” Judge Fitzgerald wrote in his five-page order. He said Banks is facing a mandatory...

Lil Yachty is back with his first new song of 2025, “Murda,” which features a prominent sample of Maggie Rogers’ breakthrough 2016 song, “Alaska.”
The two-minute track is built around a loop of Rogers’ vocal hook from “Alaska,” which gets chopped up and utilized in a few different ways, sometimes drifting breezily through the atmospheric production, sometimes whirring wildly like a siren. Meanwhile, Yachty’s lyrics veer from the casually sinister — “We left that boy in a ditch/Audemars watch on my wrist” — to more contemplative and funny: “Pull up, what’s that smell?...

Lil Durk appeared today in a federal courtroom in downtown Los Angeles, where a judge denied his souped-up bid to be released on bond pending his Oct. 14 trial on charges he orchestrated a murder-for-hire plot that led to a man’s death.

A new indictment against Lil Durk has nixed all references to his lyrics in the rapper’s murder-for-hire case. Federal prosecutors confirmed the lyrics were removed but said it would not affect their case against him.
“Defendant Banks has presented a false narrative that he is being prosecuted and detained because of his violent lyrics. This claim is, and has always been, baseless,” prosecutors wrote in a separate court filing Friday, per Billboard. “Just like every iteration of the indictment before it, the [new indictment] contains significant allegations that show defendant’s...

Lil Durk claims his lyrics are “now being used against him” in the government’s murder-for-hire case against the rapper.
Durk (born Durk Banks) was charged last year for the attempted murder of rival Quando Rondo, allegedly having ordered his own “Otf” crew to murder Rondo. While Rondo survived, his friend Lul Pab was killed in the crossfire.
The rapper previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, while his lawyers attempted to have the case dismissed earlier this month, citing “false evidence” provided to a grand jury.

Say what you will about Lil Durk, but understand upfront that he’s all about a vibe: Whether bucking lyrical shots or crooning a love song, the drill innovator makes moody, hypnotic songs that relate like one relentless, sinuous trance. Almost always, we’re game for being seduced by Durk’s melodic turnups. But when the languid-to-somber ratios on his albums began to predominate, listening sometimes felt like a chore, despite the self-care sentiments the Chiraq champ has been mainlining since 2023’s trauma-centered Almost Healed. Deep Thoughts, his Jack Handey-evoking new project — 17 lucid,...

Following Lil Durk’s arrest on murder-for-hire charges last October, the rapper’s sixth studio album, Deep Thoughts, was postponed a whopping five times. What was once expected to be a standard mix of melodic sex talk and triumphant Chicago drill cuts has seemingly morphed into a raw, introspective cry from behind bars. Despite heavy marketing framing it as a penetrating reflection on the rapper’s ongoing legal troubles, though, the album rarely delivers the depth suggested by its title and the circumstances of its creation.
While 2023’s Almost Healed maintained a straight face for much of its runtime, Deep Thoughts is “deep” for about four tracks before nose-diving into a scattershot collection of filler-grade material. Even then, some of the pearls of “wisdom” that Durk offers early on, such as “When you cash out on a porn star, you put your lifestyle on the line,” don’t exactly set a high bar.

As Linda Martell now famously said in the intro to “Spaghettii” on Beyoncé‘s Cowboy Carter, “Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” Music has evolved drastically in the last couple of decades, largely due to the internet. For years the industry has used genre to categorize and market music to different audiences. But as the years progress and music is more readily available than ever before, many genres have been evolving at a rapid pace, taking from each other in a way we have frankly never seen before. And the Grammys — music’s biggest industry peer-group honors — are finally catching on.
The first Grammys, hosted in 1959, were divided by genre right off the bat, including specific awards for jazz, country/western, R&b. This isn’t a problem: after all, without genre divisions, some music might be overlooked — Latin, R&b, and hip-hop — by a mostly white,...

In the mid-2010s, it was Skepta and Stormzy who seemed poised to carry British rap across the Atlantic as the sound of U.K. grime had its crossover moment in the States. However, their success proved to be more of a primer than a full-scale takeover. Grime’s production style — influenced by dance-music genres like jungle and dubstep — made its mark on American listeners’ taste, but it would be U.K. drill, a genre infusing the sonic textures of Chicago’s native sound with the electronic-leaning sensibility of grime,...

Lawyers for Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk had their first major chance to attack his murder-for-hire charges and jail detention Thursday, arguing in a federal courtroom in downtown Los Angeles that the artist wasn’t trying to flee the country before his October arrest in Miami. They said the “All My Life” rapper “contests” the claim he ordered a rival’s assassination, and they submitted new evidence that a rap song cited in his indictment was written and recorded months before the deadly 2022 shooting at the center of his case.

The Power universe is known for its high-stakes drama, gritty action, and incredible performances, but one of its most underrated aspects is the franchise's incredible theme songs. Having co-created the series alongside Courtney A. Kemp, 50 Cent has been massively involved in Power, even playing one of its most iconic characters, Kanan Stark. Although he was one of the show's main antagonists, Kanan became popular among audiences, growing into one of Power's best characters and even getting his own spinoff. Still, 50 Cent's influence on the franchise didn't end there, as he was a major part of every theme song.
Across Power's 4 shows, there have been three opening songs, all of which are made by 50 Cent. Although Power Book: II Ghost shares the same theme song as the original series, Raising Kanan and Force each have their own unique opening sounds that wouldn't have been possible without the legendary musician.

Yeat’s latest album, Lyfestyle, whirrs by in an hour-long blur, its details distorted in a cacophony of electronic noise. The Portland rapper surfs amid chiptune beats and synthwave stabs, and freestyles lines that he transmogrifies with adlibs and distortion effects. There are references to “big body Tonkas” and “geekin’.” He occasionally calls himself “God” without attributing that term’s origins in Five Percenter rap. But such details don’t seem to matter. Whether Nineties Memphis rapper 2 Low Key gets sampled on “Stfu” or Eighties funk-styled synth-bass is laid under “New High,...

Despite the lukewarm reception that 2021’s Hall of Fame received and the multiple delays of its follow-up, Hood Poet, Polo G shows no signs of being deterred. The Chicago rapper’s perseverance is evident on opener “God’s Favorite”: “Thuggin’ with my hoodie on, time to get my bully on,” he declares over a sumptuous beat switch, evoking the grand atmosphere and celebratory nature of a coronation ceremony.
But while Polo isn’t phoning it in performance-wise, the rest of Hood Poet never quite lives up to that initial victory lap. Only five of the album’s 18 tracks exceed the three-minute mark, and many feel incomplete. Dedications to family members (“Father’s Day”), uplifting pleas for sympathy (“Barely Holdin’ On”), tough-talking street anthems (“We Uh Shoot”) ultimately provide little more than surface-level explorations of those themes.
This leaves Hood Poet feeling somewhat shallow and lacking in creative depth. In fact,...

Jake Paul thinks he’s got the dub with his new men’s body care brand–and so do investors like Paris Hilton and Naomi Osaka, who just chipped in $14 million to help it grow.
Both Paul brothers have courted controversy for years now, and despite (or because of?) that attention, have transitioned into building big, loud personal brands that can turn over millions of dollars in sales. The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.
