Following Lil Durk’s arrest on murder-for-hire charges last October, the rapper’s sixth studio album, Deep Thoughts, was postponed a whopping five times. What was once expected to be a standard mix of melodic sex talk and triumphant Chicago drill cuts has seemingly morphed into a raw, introspective cry from behind bars. Despite heavy marketing framing it as a penetrating reflection on the rapper’s ongoing legal troubles, though, the album rarely delivers the depth suggested by its title and the circumstances of its creation.

While 2023’s Almost Healed maintained a straight face for much of its runtime, Deep Thoughts is “deep” for about four tracks before nose-diving into a scattershot collection of filler-grade material. Even then, some of the pearls of “wisdom” that Durk offers early on, such as “When you cash out on a porn star, you put your lifestyle on the line,” don’t exactly set a high bar.

He was charged Friday in a superseding federal grand jury indictment with one count of conspiracy, one count of use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death and one count of using, carrying and discharging firearms and a machine gun and possession of such firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death, the Justice Department announced.

The Oscar-nominated actress will host the June 30 event, airing live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.

The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”

Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

The 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards honored music, with some big winners, including Beyoncé taking the Innovator Award.

Taylor Swift took several trophies, including Artist of the Year, Pop Artist of the Year, Tour of the Year, and Best Lyrics for “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version),” TikTok Bop of the Year for “Cruel Summer” and Favorite Tour Style.

Jelly Roll won two awards including Best New Artist (Pop) and Best New Artist (Country).

iHeartRadio also honored Latino artists with Peso Pluma being the big winner of the night, taking awards like Regional Mexican Song of the Year for his collab with Eslabón Armado with “Ella Baila Sola,” Regional Mexican Album of the Year for Genesis, Best New Artist (Regional Mexican) and Regional Mexican Artist of the Year.
