How True Is Netflix's Officer Black Belt?
Image
Officer Black Belt is a Korean martial arts action movie released on Netflix on September 13, 2024. Based on the controversial real-life South Korean law enforcement method of using Gps-powered ankle bracelets, the story follows Lee-Jeong Do (Kim Woo-Bin), an upbeat delivery man whose various black belts make him a ninth-degree martial arts expert.

Headed home one day, Lee-Jung witnesses a violent criminal beating up a police officer while wearing a LoJack device around his ankle. Using his martial arts skills, Lee-Jeong stops the assailant and is immediately asked to join the police force. What begins as a part-time substitute soon becomes a fully committed profession for Lee-Jeong, as he rounds up a sidekick and uses his Judo, Kendo, and Taekwondo to put criminals behind bars. Despite the slapstick comedy featured in the movie, Officer Black Belt is more rooted in reality than fans might assume.

‘Bloodhounds’ (2023) Series on Netflix: Action and Thriller, Together Again.
Woo Do-Hwan in The Divine Fury (2019)
Bloodhoundsis a South Korean series directed by Kim Joo-hwan, starring Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi.

A South Korean series about the underworld that, this time, is more action than thriller. Good photography in a series that mixes boxing with an entertaining crime thriller and better production than script.

Bloodhounds

Entertaining and with that experience in the industry that South Korean productions are achieving: By now they definitely know how to produce good series that can hit the right spots.

Bloodhounds is, above all, a good product to entertain ourselves.

Without going down in history at all.

But it contributes enormously to an already consolidated industry, following the right path of profitability.

About the series

Good at all levels, but outstanding in none of them. It plays safe with the script and doesn’t transcend the genre. The series knows where to go and what its strengths are. It knows what it is,...

Film Review: Midnight Runners (2017) by Kim Joo-hwan
Image
Stepping up from a low-budget indie affair straight to a mainstream, commercial effort is no small task, but director Kim Joo-hwan undeniably succeeded with “Midnight Runners.” Dominating the box office upon release (it was the sixth highest grossing film of 2017 in Korea), this buddy cop action comedy strikes an enthralling balance between farcically daft humour and grounded emotion. It may not provoke any attentive self-discussions or chime in with imperative sociopolitical commentary, but with an enthused young cast and plenty of laughs, there are indisputably worse things to do than watch this movie.

“Midnight Runners” is available from Echelon Studios

At first though, “Midnight Runners” dials down the hilarity, fixating on an intriguing part of the education system: Police Universities. Rigorously structured, forcing applicants to shave their heads upon admission and subjecting them to late-night training drills, they steer far from the norm when it comes to methodology. Gone are practical,...
