Warden Review: Superhero Ethics in Nova São Paulo
Image
Nova São Paulo unfolds like a living organism under the lens of Warden, a Brazilian mockumentary that reframes the superhero mythos through grainy footage and talking-head testimonials. Marcus Alqueres orchestrates every shot—he directs, shoots and produces—while Jeff Juhasz’s script stitches together interviews, emergency broadcasts and viral clips into an investigative tapestry.

At its core lies Daniel Dias, an orphan whose mysterious radiation exposure grants him uncanny strength and eventual flight. Adopting the moniker “Warden,” he emerges as a city’s guardian, but the camera never forgets the human machinery that shapes his legend.

Rather than grand set pieces, this film relies on intimacy. Handheld news reels and shaky smartphone captures anchor each leap or rescue in our world. Political operatives, law-enforcement figures and media pundits parse his every move, revealing how influence seeps into even the noblest intentions. Here, power reveals its fractures—the bright arc of...

Real World Superhero Thriller Faux Documentary Film 'Warden' Trailer
Image
"He could feel himself losing control..." Freestyle Digital Media has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled Warden, a faux documentary about a real-world superhero and the implications of vigilantism. Yes, it's very similar to Chronicle from 2012, also about what if someone actually had superpowers. Warden explores the real-world impact of an ordinary kid who discovers he has superpowers and decides he can save his ailing city and further impact the lives of those forever changed by the rise of the world's first superhero. Unlike traditional superhero tales, Warden focuses on the effect of a superhero's presence on all of the ordinary people as it portrays the diverse reactions of those who love him, those who sell their souls for him, those who fight against him, and those who seek the truth amidst the chaos. No stranger to the superhero genre, director Marcus Alqueres gained viral success with his short The Flying Man.

“Warden” on Demand
“Warden” is a new live-action, crime-fighting superhero feature, directed by Marcus Alqueres, starring Giovanni de Lorenzi, Alli Willow, Brian Townes, Antonio Saboia, James Turpin, Bukassa Kabengele, Nathalia Florentino and Plínio Soares, releasing March 14, 2025 on DVD and video-on-demand:

‘What drew me to ‘Warden’ was its reflection of society’s deep fascination with heroes…

‘…how we elevate them, place our faith in their power to save us and the hidden dangers that come with it”, said Alqueres.

“I love exploring ‘what if’ scenarios and reimagining familiar genres in unexpected ways, and Warden gave me the opportunity to do both.

“In a real-world-inspired narrative, ‘Warden’ redefines heroism and deconstructs traditional notions of what it means to be a hero, challenging audiences to question the difference between the heroes we seek, the ones we create and the ones we truly need…”

Sundance 2018 Review: Rust, An Intriguing, Split-Screen Portrait of Abuse
Aly Muritiba’s Ferrugem (lit. Rust) opens with a haunting shot of a gymnotiform. It rears its head out of the coral, eyes still-white, mouth plopping open and shut, and body coated in a corroded tint of yellow. “They say when it feels threatened,” an unknowing Tatiana (Tifanny Dopke) tells her brooding classmate and eventual fling, Renet (Giovanni de Lorenzi). “It can spark an electric charge that kills you instantly.” The opening scene finds her gazing longingly at the electric eel, a look she repeats when she looks at Renet. A cute-meet that’s both a beginning and an end. On the film whirls into twin maelstroms, both inescapable to the respective people caught within them. Odd but intriguing, then, is Muritiba’s decision to splice his...

First Trailer for Brazilian Teen Drama 'Rust' Playing at Sundance 2018
"I just want to disappear." The first official trailer has debuted for an indie drama from Brazil titled Rust, which is currently premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival this month in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category. Directed by Aly Muritiba, the film deals with a group of high school teens and a case of sexual abuse that gets even worse when a private video leaks to the entire school. The film specifically focuses on the brewing relationship between teens Tati and Renet, as well as their home lives. The film's cast is lead by Giovanni de Lorenzi, Tifanny Dopke, Enrique Diaz, and Clarissa Kiste. This looks like a very strong drama from Brazil addressing a very important topic of the times - and how everything gets even crazier when it's spread among teens in high school. Seems like it's worth catching at the festival. Here's the first official trailer for Aly Muritiba's Rust,...
