Fantastic Fest 2023: ‘There’s Something in the Barn’ Review
Image
Stars: Martin Starr, Amrita Acharia, Zoe Winther-Hansen, Townes Bunner, Kiran Shah, Henriette Seenstrup | Written by Aleksander Kirkwood Brown | Directed by Magnus Martens

It’s October, so it’s time for two things: pumpkin spice on everything and the start of Christmas marketing. And just in time, the Norwegian holiday horror-comedy There’s Something in the Barn makes its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Bill inherits his uncle’s house in Norway after the man dies in a freak accident. We, of course, know it was no accident, and soon enough so will Bill, his wife and Bill’s kids Nora and Lucas (Townes Bunner) will too.

They relocate from California to Norway with plans to open a bed and breakfast, but complications ensue. Both in the obvious cultural differences and, more ominously, what Lucas discovers living in the barn.

It’s a nisse or barn elf. He’s a jolly little...

‘There’s Something in the Barn’ Fantastic Fest Review – Evil Elf Comedy Has an Identity Crisis
Image
Christmas horror movies don’t come around too often, but every now and then we get gems like Black Christmas, Gremlins, Rare Exports and Krampus. Magnus Martens‘ evil elf horror comedy There’s Something in the Barn tries to hit that holiday horror comedy sweet spot that falls somewhere between Gremlins and Krampus, but misses the mark on both counts. It winds up being a forgettable, if mildly amusing, movie that doesn’t seem to know which audience it’s playing to.

After inheriting his uncle’s estate in Norway, Bill (Martin Starr), his second wife Carol (Amrita Acharia) and their children Lucas (Townes Bunner) and Nora (Zoe Winther-Hansen) move into their new home with the dream of turning the property into a bed and breakfast. The family adapts to their new Scandinavian lifestyle differently, with Bill and Carol trying to make the best of it, and the children feeling...

There's Something In The Barn Review: Bloody Horror Comedy Is Genuinely Fun
Image
"There's Something in the Barn" is a genuinely funny horror Christmas comedy that strikes a balance between ridiculousness and gore, making it an entertaining watch. The film's engaging cast, who are all in on the joke, and its blend of Nordic mythology and modern holiday traditions contribute to its comedic success. While the horror aspects of the film feel excessive and overstretched, the absurdist humor and culture clashes between Norway and the US provide the most hilarious and satisfying moments. Overall, the film delivers on its premise and promises a fun and cult classic experience.

There’s Something in the Barn is genuinely funny. It’s a horror Christmas comedy that balances its ridiculous aspects and fun tone with plenty of gore and hilarity. Directed by Magnus Martens from a screenplay by Aleksander Kirkwood Brown, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously. Boasting an engaging cast, all of whom are in on the joke,...

There's Something In The Barn Review: Norwegian Gremlins Is A Bloody Christmas Romp [Fantastic Fest 2023]
Image
Christmas horror movies are something special. The best ones take a time that -- for many -- is peaceful and full of joy, then juxtapose the lights, the carols, the gatherings, and the parties with absolute carnage in a way that results in a fun time.

Within Christmas horror there's an even more specific subgenre of Christmas horror creature features, which play with specific Christmas beliefs and traditions and twist them into gory, violent monsters. Movies like Mike Dougherty's "Krampus" and Jalmari Helander's "Rare Exports" do this, and now, the pseudo spiritual trilogy is complete with Magnus Martens's "There's Something in the Barn." This family Christmas horror movie takes clear inspiration from "Gremlins" and '80s genre movies, and wraps it in a hilarious fish-out-of-water story of an American family moving to Norway. It's laced with smart jabs at both cultures, and features Martin Starr doing a great obliviously silly performance.
