Cast Of The Meg: Where You've Seen The Actors Before
Image
The cast of The Meg was a big reason for the shark movie's box office success when it was released back in 2018. A loose adaptation of the book, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten, the film follows a group of scientists who encounter a 75-foot-long Megalodon shark while on a rescue mission to save a trapped research station called the Mana. Posing a threat to both the scientists and the people on land, Jason Statham's Jonas Taylor and his team must face off against this gigantic beast in a confrontation that is equally silly and entertaining.

At the time, The Meg was the most expensive shark movie ever made (via THR). While the film received mixed reviews, that investment paid off as it earned $529 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), a large part of that coming China, where the film is most popular.

Meg 2's Suyin Reveal Completely Changes The Franchise's Future
Image
Suyin's death in Meg 2 changes the franchise's future and deviates from the books, impacting the story and characters in Meg 3 and future sequels. Meg 2 introduces Suyin's brother Jiuming and gives Meiying a bigger role as the franchise prepares to move forward without Suyin. The absence of Suyin leaves room for a new love interest for Jason Statham's character in Meg 3, potentially reintroducing Lori as Jonas' ex-wife.

Meg 2: The Trench delivered a surprise by killing Li Bingbing's Suyin off-screen, and her death completely changes the franchise's future. The Jason Statham-led action sequel made headlines well before its release in 2023 due to the absence of original The Meg star Li Bingbing. The popular Chinese actress was confirmed to be missing from the sequel, which created questions about how Meg 2 would explain Suyin not being included. The story evolved to introduce her brother Jiuming (Jing Wu) as a new ally...

Why Jessica McNamee Didn't Return For Meg 2 & What Happened To Lori
Image
Meg 2: The Trench brings back familiar faces from the first movie but Jessica McNamee's character, Lori, is missing without any explanation. Suyin's absence in the sequel is explained, but Lori's absence is never mentioned, leaving her status a mystery. McNamee expressed interest in returning for Meg 2 but was not included in the cast, despite potential availability in her schedule. The reason for her exclusion remains unknown.

Blockbuster sequel Meg 2: The Trench brought back a handful of fan-favorite cast members from the first movie, but Jessica McNamee and her character Lori are nowhere to be seen. Meg 2: The Trench sees Jason Statham’s freelance megalodon hunter Jonas Taylor springing back into action when an illegal deep sea drilling operation unleashes a ruthless pack of megs. While the sequel brings back a bunch of familiar faces from the first film, from Cliff Curtis’ “straight man” Mac to Page Kennedy...

Meg 2: The Trench: Why Li Bingbing Was Absent From the Sequel
Image
Fans are puzzled by Li Bingbing's absence from Meg 2: The Trench, and speculation arises about her reasons for not reprising her role. The sequel introduces Chinese movie star Jing Wu as Suyin's brother, adding intrigue to the dynamic of the film. Li Bingbing's commitment to environmental advocacy may have influenced her decision to focus on other projects, potentially shifting her career away from acting.

Fans were baffled by Li Bingbing, who played oceanographer Suyin Zhang in the first movie, being conspicuously absent from Meg 2: The Trench, a sequel to the undersea thriller The Meg. Although the new movie had even more horrifying underwater thrills, it appeared that Li Bingbing's character wouldn't be going underwater this time. Viewers have wondered why Li Bingbing isn't in Meg 2: The Trench.

As anticipation for the movie rises following its release, more questions have been raised. Despite Li Bingbing's absence, the...

The Meg 2 Makes a Strong Box Office Debut Despite Poor Reviews
Image
Meg 2: The Trench debuted at number two at the box office on its opening weekend, despite poor reviews.

The latest film in the Meg franchise had several popular films to compete with on its opening weekend, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Oppenheimer, both of which have garnered excellent reviews from fans and critics alike. The Meg 2, however, was fighting both rivals at the box office and poor reviews, some of which criticized the film for being boring, cheesy, and predictable. Per Box Office Mojo, The Meg 2 rose above the less-than-stellar reviews to claim the coveted second-place spot, coming in just below Barbie at $30 million; Barbie earned $53 million to retain its top spot.

Interview: Ben Wheatley Talks Meg 2, Jason Statham, and monster flicks!
Image
The first time I saw Kill List, I was fascinated with the filmmaker behind it. As his work continued to grow, my appreciation for Ben Wheatley was only confirmed. With terrific features like Kill List, High-Rise, Free Fire, and the recent In The Earth, I was impressed with Wheatley’s choices. And then, he surprises once again, by taking on a gigantic Megalodon, and something that can be even more deadly, the extremely charismatic Jason Statham. Meg 2: The Trench is a new direction for the director, one that is far more of a spectacle than what we’ve seen from him before.

Recently, I sat down with the filmmaker, and as always he was incredibly kind and a joy to speak with. Ben opened up about taking on a film with an emphasis on visual effects and action. He discussed the creature design, and how he found himself involved with the sequel.

Meg 2: The Trench: Ending, Explained
Image
The 2018 movie, The Meg, told the thrilling tale of Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver portrayed by the talented Jason Statham. Alongside oceanographer Suyin Zhang, played by Bingbing Li, they stumbled upon an unexplored world deep in the ocean beyond the Mariana Trench's presumed end. Their discovery led to the awakening of a living megalodon shark, wreaking havoc on a nearby beach until they managed to stop it.

The much-awaited sequel to Ben Wheatley's The Meg, Meg 2: The Trench, continues the story while plunging into the perilous and ominous ocean depths. Additionally featured in the movie are Cliff Curtis, Jing Wu, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy. The film begins with a flashback to the Cretaceous period, showcasing the brutality of nature as predators became prey and the Meg eventually triumphed. The movie's central theme—that nature cannot be entirely domesticated or tamed—is expressed in this way.

The sequel aims to maintain the vulnerable and relatable characters from the first film, offering an adventure where the audience can understand and worry about the protagonists.

While speaking to ScreenRant, The Meg 2: The Trench director Ben Wheatley revealed that Steven Spielberg's Jaws was the biggest inspiration for his latest film and explained how the 1975 classic action thriller as well as other monster movies influenced The Meg sequel.

The Meg 2 Director Is Ready To Helm A Godzilla Or King Kong Movie: "There's Unfinished Business"

Where to Watch Powered by Meg 2: The Trench director, Ben Wheatley, expressed interest in tackling a King Kong or Godzilla film, citing his love for the franchise and a desire to return to giant monsters. Wheatley's experience working on the Meg series has prepared him for the challenges of directing monster movies, including handling scale and special effects. Monster movies like Meg 2: The Trench require a delicate balance of suspense, action, and comedy, which Wheatley aims to achieve in his upcoming projects.

The director of Meg 2: The Trench gave insight in a recent interview into the kind of monster movies he might want to tackle next, sharing aspirations of taking on a film in the King Kong or Godzilla universe. Shark sequel Meg 2: The Trench is the first major challenger to the Barbenheimer supremacy, opening in 544 cinemas at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend.

Meg 2 will look to challenge both its Warner Bros stablemate Barbie, and Universal’s Oppenheimer, while benefitting from the surge in audiences those titles have brought in the past fortnight.

The first title, 2018’s The Meg, started with £3.7m also in early August; and ended on a sharp £15.9m.

The Meg (2018)
‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Review: A Dull Sequel That Plunges Into Boredom
The Meg (2018)
No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.

At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.

The film superfluously starts in the Cretaceous period to give...

The Meg (2018)
Meg 2: The Trench Review: A Campy Splash
The Meg (2018)
Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.

Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

Meg 2: The Trench - Trailer, Cast, Release Date & Everything We Know
Image
Meg 2: The Trench updates are starting to arrive for the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster starring Jason Statham. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, The Meg is based on Steve Alten's 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, and its release marked an exciting new addition to the Sharksploitation sub-genre. As a Chinese-American co-production, the film also introduced actress Li Bingbing to many Western moviegoers. The movie's sequel gained momentum in October 2020, when Meg 2: The Trench updates revealed Ben Wheatley was announced as Meg 2: The Trench director.

Before joining the director's chair for Meg 2: The Trench, the English filmmaker is best known for horror movies such as Kill List and Sightseers, and in recent years, Wheatley explored other genres with High-Rise, Free Fire, and Rebecca. Clearly no stranger to ambitious projects, the first thing that Wheatley started doing was talking about how large-scale the sequel would be, and...

Meg 2: The Trench earns PG-13 rating for Jason Statham vs. shark action
Image
Last week, Warner Bros. unveiled the trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link). If that trailer left you wondering if the sea creature mayhem of this film was going to boost it into the R rating territory, you can stop wondering. Because it hasn’t. Just like The Meg, Meg 2: The Trench has earned a PG-13 rating. The Motion Picture Association ratings board has given it a PG-13 for action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.

The screenplay for Meg 2: The Trench has been written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the same writing team that was on the first film. These films are inspired by a series of novels written by Steve Alten.

Meg 2: The Trench Cast & Character Guide
Image
While the titular sharks steal the spotlight in Meg 2: The Trench, there are plenty of recognizable stars in the movie's cast, including returning icons Jason Statham and Cliff Curtis and exciting new additions like Wu Jing and Skyler Samuels. When it was released in 2018, The Meg was a surprise hit with audiences, grossing more than $530 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), so a sequel was a no-brainer. This time, instead of contending with just one megalodon — and later an even bigger one — like Statham did in the first movie, Meg 2 sees him taking on a bunch of megalodons as they begin hunting in packs.

Based on Steve Alten’s 1999 novel The Trench, which is the second installment of his Meg series, the sequel was written by the returning trio of Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Replacing the original's director, Jon Turteltaub, and making his big-budget blockbuster debut,...

‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Trailer: Jason Statham Goes Underwater to Kill Three Even Bigger Sharks
Image
Jason Statham comes face to face with not one, not two, but three deep sea-dwelling prehistoric sharks, along with some giant creature with a bunch of tentacles, in the first official trailer for “Meg 2: The Trench.”

Shortly after “The Meg” grossed $530 million worldwide in 2018, a sequel was confirmed. The original film followed a group of scientists whose submarine was attacked by a Megalodon — a species of giant shark previously thought to be extinct. Now, Warner Bros. has pulled back the curtain on the film after debuting its first trailer ahead of the movie’s Aug. 4 premiere.

The new footage unveils Statham teaming up with Wu Jing, a massive star in China who has starred in blockbusters such as “The Wandering Earth,” “Wolf Warrior” and “The Battle at Lake Changjin.” The pair lead an underwater journey to the bottom of the ocean to investigate new creatures, before taking on a...

Meg 2: The Trench trailer previews the Jason Statham vs. giant shark rematch!
Image
Last month, attendees at CinemaCon – including JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray – had the chance to watch the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link). Now those of us who weren’t at CinemaCon get our chance to watch the trailer, which is now online. Check it out in the embed above!

The screenplay for Meg 2: The Trench has been written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the same writing team that was on the first film. These films are inspired by a series of novels written by Steve Alten.

Jason Statham is back in the lead as rescue diver Jonas Taylor and is joined in the cast of the sequel by returning co-stars Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy, as well as...

Meg 2: The Trench Trailer: Jason Statham Returns To Fight Three More Giant Sharks
Image
The Film Gods observed the release of Jason Statham Takes On A Prehistoric Megalodon With His Bare Hands, aka "The Meg," back in 2018 and saw that it was good. Then, after years of waiting for updates, the Film Gods finally deigned to give their blessing to the production of what would eventually be called "Meg 2: The Trench" ... and we will see that this will most likely be good, too, especially if that early, dino-chomping footage screened during CinemaCon is any indication.

Now, we're getting our first real look at the utter madness in store for us as Warner Bros. has seen fit to release the official trailer for "Meg 2." Not only does this sequel bring back Jason Statham as everyone's favorite rescue diver/action hero extraordinaire Jonas Taylor — I absolutely had to look up his character's name and I'm just now realizing how funny it is that "Jonas" is...

Meg 2: The Trench Trailer and Poster Tease More Giant Shark Action for Jason Statham
Image
You’ll never want to go in the water ever again. Though, having said that, you might be pleased you did when you once again bask in the ludicrous sight of action movie superstar Jason Statham going head-to-head with a giant shark in the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench. Released courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures, Meg 2: The Trench promises to bring an even bigger monster mash to theaters when it’s unleashed later this year. Check out the new trailer for Meg 2: The Trench below.

Released back in 2018, The Meg follows The Stath and a group of scientists who encounter a 75-foot-long megalodon shark while on a rescue mission on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Entering the world of men and treating it like an all you can eat buffet, The Meg was met with mixed reviews, though many appreciated the B-movie creature feature throwback.

The Meg 2: The Trench Footage Reaction: Yes, A Shark Eats A T-Rex [CinemaCon 2023]
Image
Remember when Warner Bros. promised us a horror-centric spin-off to "Aquaman" centered on the monsters of The Trench? Those were some good days, weren't they? Though sadly that project was canned and the future of Aquaman himself is in question — but not "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom," don't worry — there is still hope for some big-budget aquatic horror, because the mighty Megalodon shark is back with "The Meg 2: The Trench," baby!

That's right, Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy and the massive, humongous shark that gives the film its title are back for the second of hopefully many sequels — Steve Alten, who wrote the "Meg" book the film is based on, is still writing sequels to this day, the second of which is called, you guessed it, "The Trench." We sadly don't know much about the sequel, but we can grab a few hints from Alten's book,...

Meg 2: The Trench first trailer was screened at CinemaCon
Image
The Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, is currently in progress, and as part of the presentation they showed attendees the first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, director Ben Wheatley’s sequel to Jon Turteltaub’s 2018 “Jason Statham vs. a giant shark” movie The Meg (watch it at This Link).

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was in attendance to see the trailer, and this is what he had to say about it: “First trailer: We see footage of The Meg killing dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Looks much more expensive than the last movie. Jonas (Jason Statham) is sent into the trench the deal with whatever creature is down there – which of course is The Meg! Wu Jing, from Wolf Warrior, is a co-star. This version of The Meg is bigger because it’s an Apex predator. It escapes The Trench and starts eating people.

The Meg (2018)
The Meg Review #2: Bigger Isn't Always Better
The Meg (2018)
It stinks! I'm not usually this heartless or blunt when it comes to the films I review. As someone who knows a thing or 2 about the practicalities of filmmaking, the blood sweat and tears necessarily to bring even the most modest project to fruition, I don't believe there's such a thing as a "lazy movie". The Biz is no place for those who can't go the distance and then some, and bringing any concept to the big-screen is a task of herculean proportions. That said, The Meg doesn't exist in a vacuum; it comes at a time when big-budget shark-themed horror movies are becoming a staple of summertime. Unfortunately, as opposed to the last couple years of stellar aquatic terrors, The Meg threatens to bring the trend to an abrupt extinction.

Rather than turn this review into a laundry list of the film's shortcomings, I'll frame The Meg's failures in...

‘The Meg’ Review
Stars: Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, Winston Chao, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Robert Taylor | Written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber | Directed by Jon Turteltaub

The Meg may seem like a film you would watch late at night on a basic cable channel but the $150 million dollar budget says otherwise. The film, based on the popular book Meg, is Jaws on steroids with more humor and in this insistence, that is a good thing. The plot? Well, it’s marine biologists and Jason Statham trying to stop a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon, i.e. the Meg, from eating people. That about sums up the film.

Oh, you want the longer form of the plot? Jonas Taylor (Statham) is an expert sea diver and Naval Captain who aborted his mission and half his crew when he encountered the Meg several years ago. No...

Review: The Meg is Pure Summer Movie Escapism
When it comes to beating the summer doldrums, nothing is better than going to the movies. Whether it’s just to spend a few hours in a darkened room with the A/C blasting to find some reprieve from the heat, or it’s just to get lost in the world of big-screen visuals while munching on popcorn, summer movies often provide us with some much-needed escapism, which perfectly sums The Meg up to a T. It’s an action-fueled monster movie that delivers some solid moments of suspense and spectacle, although I do wish the script spent more time diving deeper instead of treading shallow water most of the time.

As far as the plot goes, The Meg follows a team of researchers who work for an international undersea program and dive into uncharted waters (quite literally and slightly figuratively in this instance), where they encounter an unseen monstrosity that attacks their submersible,...

The Shallows (2016)
Latest The Meg Poster Puts Our Heroes Front and Center
The Shallows (2016)
Summer is for shark lovers. In addition to The Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week celebration, fans of underwater apex predators are becoming accustom to at least one shark-themed horror movie a year. In 2016, we dipped our toes into The Shallows; 2017 took us 47 Meters Down; in 2018, it's all about The Meg! Short for megalodon, the high-octane thriller is based on Steve Alten's 1997 bestseller, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.

We've already seen a few posters for The Meg, all of which feature the film's titular leviathan. Today, however, we're seeing an International poster that puts the film's diverse human cast front and center. From left to right, we see Cliff Curtis (as James 'Mac' Mackreides), Shuya Sophia Cai (as Meiying), Winston Chao (as Dr. Minway Zhang), Bingbing Li (as Suyin), Jason Statham (as Jonas Taylor), Ruby Rose (as Jaxx Herd), and Rainn Wilson (as Jack Morris). Of course, the poster...

New International Trailer for Shark Movie 'The Meg' Teases Li Bingbing
"A living fossil." "Thought to have been extinct..." Warner Bros has debuted a brand new Chinese trailer for Jon Turtletaub's giant shark movie The Meg, a long-awaited adaptation of Steve Alten's novel, about a 70-foot long angry, prehistoric shark. The plot is about a group of researchers in a big deep-sea submersible stuck at the bottom of the ocean after being attacked, with Jason Statham trying to rescue them and get rid of the shark. This was co-financed by a Chinese company, and this trailer includes a number of key shots of Li Binging as Suyin, of course. The Meg co-stars Winston Chao, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Masi Oka. There's not a ton of new footage in this trailer, but it's fun to watch. Plus, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm already...

Jason Statham at an event for The Beekeeper (2024)
Latest Peek at The Meg Reveals True Size of Giant Shark
Jason Statham at an event for The Beekeeper (2024)
The Meg is still months away from being released, but a new image from the movie is here to make sure you think of giant sharks every time you step foot into the ocean this summer. The movie stars Jason Statham and the actor has just revealed that he went diving with huge bull sharks to prepare for his role in The Meg. While the bull sharks have nothing on the Meg when it comes to size, it's still a pretty intense experience, according to Statham, but not in the way that you'd expect.

In the recently released image from The Meg, hundreds of people are floating in the ocean, unaware that there's a giant prehistoric shark swimming right below them. The 75-foot Megalodon looks like it's about to have a nice snack on some unsuspecting tourists. The first trailer for the movie is expected this month, along with the poster.

New The Meg Photo Shows a Giant Shark Swim into a Buffet of People and Jason Statham isn't Afraid of Swimming with Sharks
A new photo has been released for Jason Staham's upcoming film The Meg, which is a thriller that centers around a massive shark known as the Megalodon. In the film, he plays a diver who is sent on a mission to rescue the crew of a deep-sea submersible after being attacked by a 75-foot-long shark. The photo above gives you a look at the shark as it swims into a buffet of people for it to eat.

In preparation for the Jon Turtletaub-directed film, Statham actually swam with real sharks, and if you know anything about Jason Statham, you know swimming with sharks wouldn't scare him in the slightest. While talking to EW he said:

"On the early stages of the prep, we took a trip to Fiji, and we went diving with some bull sharks. They hand-feed them and it’s a spectacular thing to see. These things are three meters in length,...
