“This Fool” Is Finally Giving Latinas the Depth They Deserve in Season 2
Image
If I have one complaint about the critically acclaimed first season of Hulu's "This Fool," it's how masculine it is. Yes, there are a handful of women characters, but we don't see much of their interiority or get their fully formed individual storylines. They are all constricted to relationship roles - the main character's mom and his girlfriend. My issue lies in the show's outlook as well - it's a decidedly male aesthetic. To be clear, "This Fool" isn't a misogynistic show by any means, just one focused on a guy and his cousin.

The problem, of course, is that male creators, directors, and actors over-index in movies and TV. They've long been able to share their perspectives with the world. This gets even more complicated when you layer in race and ethnicity. Latinas are among the least represented segments of the population when compared to our actual numbers in the US.

John Leguizamo-Partnered Latino-Focused Streaming Platform mitúTV Launches (Exclusive)
Image
Digital media and entertainment company NGLmitú, the result of a merger last year between Ngl Collective and mitú, have launched the new Latino-focused streaming platform mitúTV. Targeting bilingual and English dominant U.S. Latinos, the service also announced three new shows: “Three Gs in a Pod,” hosted by Erik Rivera, Sasha Merci and Jesus Sepulveda; “Girl, Let Me Tell You,” hosted by Jessica Flores, Ivana Rojas and Glorelys Mora; and the game show “Spill the Chisme.”

“We were more of a business-to-business type of organization,” said Ngl Collective founder and CEO David Chitel, “which is why it made so much sense for us to merge with mitú, because they were the leading business-to-consumer entity connecting with we call ‘new generation Latinos.’ So the marriage of our two companies is sort of a big deal in our space.”

Chitel noted that mitú had already been producing a lot of content for the ‘new generation Latino’ market,...

Here Are All the Major Netflix Shows Canceled in 2022
Image
Netflix had a big year in 2022, surpassing more than 223 million paid streaming subscribers globally, and there’s plenty on tap in 2023 to be excited about — including new seasons of “You” and “Shadow and Bone.”

Below is a recap of the major Netflix shows canceled in 2022, from beloved series to shows that hadn’t even aired yet.

‘Gentefied’ Canceled By Netflix After Two Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew half-hour Latinx dramedy Gentefied for a third season. The decision comes two months after the release of show’s second season on November 10.

The show never appeared in the Netflix Top 10 with the new season, which likely played a part in Netflix’s cancellation decision, which typically factors in cost, viewership and critical acclaim.

Gentefied, from creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, follows East Los Angeles Latinos on their respective and collective search for the American Dream. Season 2 tackles Erik Morales (JJ Soria) and his cousin Chris’s (Carlos Santos) struggle to keep Pops (Joaquin Cosio) in the country while dealing with new love, new babies, estranged fathers and tracking down Bad Bunny at a Halloween party. They fight to thrive, but along the way question where they truly belong in a world made up of borders, family separation, and the potential...

Gentefied: Here Are the Odds We'll Get to See the Morales Fam Again in a Season 3
Image

Netflix's dramedy Gentefied, which debuted on the streamer in February 2020, is back for another round! Created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, and executive produced by America Ferrera, the series follows the story of a Latinx family in East Los Angeles as they grapple with saving their family's restaurant, Mama Fina's Taco, while staying ahead of the rapid gentrification in their neighborhood, Boyle Heights. Three cousins - Ana (Karrie Martin), Chris (Carlos Santos), and Erik (J.J. Soria) - and their Abuelo Casimiro (Joaquín Cosío) continue to fight the odds stacked against them in the second installment, which hit Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 10. But will their journey span past this season?

Though Netflix has not canceled the series thus far, they have not renewed it for a season three yet, either. But that's par for the course for most of the shows on the streaming platform.
