‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Review: A Quest for Queer Self-Love Expands the Realm of What Animation Typically Represents
Image
Inhabited exclusively by lesbians, the planet Clitopolis operates as a queer utopia isolated from any heterosexual foes as it floats inside the safety of “gay space” (a gated portion of the universe specifically for LGBT entities). Everyone there loves to party, except for Saira (Shabana Azeez), the ruling queens’ only daughter, a sheepish 23-year-old with extreme self-esteem issues. A painful breakup with her daredevil girlfriend Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel) — after dating for just two weeks — further unravels her fragile emotional state and sets in motion the odyssey in “Lesbian Space Princess,” a sapphic sci-fi animated romp for adults.

Behind this idiosyncratic and intermittently amusing vision are Australian co-writer-directors Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, who tonally seem to take a page from some of Cartoon Network’s edgier shows, while thematically aligning more closely with “Steven Universe” — with the addition of explicit sexual references. Furthermore, key scenes indicate that “Sailor Moon...

Lesbian Space Princess - Jennie Kermode - 19548
Shabana Azeez
Being a princess is supposed to make life straightforward. One is supposed to be beautiful, popular, and surrounded by suitors – or at least that’s what the stories say. Growing up in the social whirl created by her celebrity mothers on the planet Clitopolis, where she can theoretically have anything she wants, Princess Saira (voiced by Shabana Azeez) just feels like more of a loser. She can’t hold the attention of restless, super cool bounty hunter girlfriend Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel), and she’s tortured by the thought of once again turning up to prom only to be relegated to the single zone. Events take an unexpected turn, however, when Kiki is captured by straight white maliens who threaten to drown her in a vat of toxic homebrew if Saira doesn’t turn up with a ransom. Can our anxiety-ridden heroine pull herself together, step outside her comfort zone and save the.

Berlin: New Films From Ira Sachs, Denis Cote Set for Panorama Lineup
Image
The Berlin Film Festival has named the first dozen titles for its 2025 Panorama lineup, Berlin’s main sidebar, and there are a few familiar faces in the mix.

Berlinale regular Ira Sachs will return with Peter Hujar’s Day, starring Ben Wishaw and Rebecca Hall, a feature based on a 1974 conversation between photographer Hujar and his friend Linda Rosenkrantz, offering insight into the New York art scene. Canadian filmmaker and fellow Berlinale alum Denis Côté is back in Panorama with Paul, a documentary on a cleaner who uses his job cleaning homes and sharing his routines on social media to help combat depression and social anxiety.

Other Panorama titles announced Tuesday include Emilie Blichfeldt’s Danish horror feature Den stygge stesøsteren (The Ugly Stepsister), a dark twisted fairy tale, which will premiere in Sundance; Frelle Petersen’s Hjem kaere hjem, a social realist drama on the life of an elder...

Also set for the Generation competition is Our Wildest Days (I Agries Meres Mas) by Greek filmmaker Vasilis Kekatos who is best known for his 2019 short film The Distance Between Us and the Sky, which won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. A high school reunion takes a turn for the worst: Find out where you can watch Class of ‘07, a show that explores what would happen if you became stranded at your old high school thanks to an apocalyptic wave.

For many, your ten-year high school reunion rolling around isn’t happiness-inducing. It’s a reminder that your teenage days are long behind you and requires you to mingle with people you may have mentally written off the day you graduated. Simon Baker, Yael Stone star in Del Kathryn Barton’s ‘Blaze’
Image
Simon Baker, Yael Stone, Josh Lawson and newcomer Julia Savage are among the key cast of director Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature Blaze (formerly Puff), which recently wrapped shooting in Sydney.

Barton, a dual Archibald prize winner, wrote the script with Huna Amweero (Jade of Death), with the work inspired by Barton’s painting ‘sing blood-wings sing’, which was in turn inspired by Peter Paul and Mary song ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’.

A hybrid work of live-action, VFX and animation, Blaze sees Savage plays a young girl who accidentally witnesses a woman being violently attacked, leaving her catatonic with shock and struggling to make sense of what she saw.

She retreats into imaginary worlds, where Zephyr, the shimmering magic dragon who has been her companion since childhood, allows her to activate her own rage and ultimately find renewal.

Also starring are Morgan Davies, Bernie Van Tiel, Remy Hii, John Waters,...
