‘Splitsville’ Review: The ‘Climb’ Sensations Covino & Marvin Are Back In Riotous Comedy Of Marital Woes With Dakota Johnson And Adria Arjona – Cannes Film Festival
Image
In 2019 The Climb made a splash in Cannes like few independently made comedies ever could do as it won a prize in the Un Certain Regard section, drew major critical praise, got instant distribution from Sony Classics and put its creators and stars Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin on the map as filmmakers to watch. Six years later, they finally are back on the Croisette for tonight’s Out of Competition premiere of a new comedy all about marriage in crisis, Splitsville, and I am happy to report they are firing on all cylinders with this truly hilarious look at two couples who are best friends but find their marriages suddenly are blowing up.

In fact, I would say it is this film that will firmly establish them as true comedy heavyweights, whereas The Climb had several Lol moments but ran out of steam toward the end. Splitsville stays on course for all 100 minutes,...

Will Smith Addresses Chris Rock Oscars Slap on New Album Based on a True Story
Image
On his new album, Based on a True Story, Will Smith is defiant about his infamous Chris Rock Oscars slap, addressing the incident on multiple songs.

The opening track on the project, “Int. Barbershop – Day,” is a skit with a chorus of voices sharing rumors and differing opinions of the actor and rapper, including “Will Smith is canceled” and “I ain’t never gonna forgive him for that shit he did.”

Later on, one voice says, “I heard he won the Oscar, but he had to give it back.” Another chimes in, “And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black.”

The song also references Smith’s response at the Oscars to Rock’s joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith: “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talking about?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”

On the second track,...

Will Smith Addresses the Chris Rock Slap On New Single
Image
Will Smith addressed the fallout of the slap heard around the world on “Int. Barbershop — Day”, the opening track of his Based on a True Story album he dropped today. The song, featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone, starts with random voices conversing through rhyme. The first person proclaims, “Will Smith is cancelled!” Another verse ponders, “Who the fuck Will Smith think he is?” while the next detractor reveals, “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that shit he did.”

Smith directly references his acrimonious relationship with...

“We had nine people in the cast”: Star Trek: Voyager’s Obsession With Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine Brutally Sidelined a Legendary Character
Image
Like other shows in the franchise, Star Trek: Voyager had a soft spot for certain characters and assigned the bulk of the storylines to these select few. While the show boasted of a stellar cast, the series still had Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Janeway and Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine at the center in most episodes.

Jeri Ryan proved to be an asset for the show, driving many viewers, but the attention given to Seven of Nine led to the series sidelining one of the best Vulcans. Tim Russ brought the character of Commander Tuvok to life in the best way possible and the character’s story was also interesting. Alas, he did not get the necessary screentime.

Star Trek: Voyager had to dedicate massive amounts of screentime to Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine A still from Star Trek: Voyager | Credits: Paramount

Larry Tamblyn Dies: The Standells Lead Singer & Actor Russ Tamblyn’s Brother Was 82
Image
Larry Tamblyn, the founding frontman for The Standells, brother of actor Russ Tamblyn and uncle of Amber Tamblyn, has died. He was 82.

The musician’s nephew Dennis Tamblyn announced that his uncle died on Saturday, paying tribute to Larry, who he noted “was still making music well into his later years.”

“My uncle Larry Tamblyn passed away today. I have very fond memories of him and his family over the years,” began Larry in the Facebook post.

“He lived an incredible life. He was in a band called The Standells whose hit 1966 song ‘Dirty Water’ reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts and is still played to this day whenever the Red Sox or the Bruins win a home game. They also played on an episode of The Munsters.”

Dennis continued, “A few years ago, The Standells played at Hotel Congress here in Tucson and Larry stayed with me. It was...

Why Tuvok Was Underutilized On Star Trek: Voyager, According To Tim Russ
Image
While most "Star Trek" shows are ensemble dramas, one can always tell when the series' writers favor one character over another. On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," for instance, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Data (Brent Spiner) received the lion's share of stories, while some of the other characters -- Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) especially -- got hardly any. The same can be said of "Star Trek: Voyager." The show's writers clearly loved Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and she became the crux of most "Voyager" plots. The wealth was shared a little bit on "Voyager," though, as characters like Chakotay (Robert Beltran), Neelix (Ethan Phillips), and the Doctor (Robert Picardo) all got their moments to shine.

But when Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) joined the show in its fourth season, she more or less became the star, siphoning much of the writers' attention toward herself. The writers loved Seven so...

M. Night Shyamalan's 'Trap' Is the Best Thriller of 2024
Image
Trap was one of my favorite movies of last year. Every moment of the film was riveting, watching as a serial killer and his daughter tried to escape a sting operation. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed, with some people finding it too off-putting and the Academy members not having any room in their hearts to nominate it for their precious Oscars.

M. Night Shyamalan, director of Trap, was shut out of Hollywood for a while. He had to fund Split himself after backlash from an admittedly disappointing streak of films, which included The Last Airbender. However, Trap is one of his best, and I think it's time to admit that.

'Trap' Is the Greatest Thriller of 2024

There were certainly some exciting thrillers in 2024. It was interesting watching Naomi Ackie escape rich male abusers in Blink Twice, or Taron Egerton channel John McClane in Carry-On. That being said, I easily...

Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Geordi La Forge Before LeVar Burton
Image
When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.

Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

I Think 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Needs To Change (Will It Ever Get Canceled?)
Image
90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? is in serious need of a makeover. The show has been around for eight seasons now, and with every new season, the show gets more and more tedious to watch. I’m surely getting tired of watching the same faces on my TV screen week after week. For instance, I think I’ve watched Jasmine Pineda and Gino Palazzolo on TV every week for four back-to-back seasons since they started their Before the 90 Days journey on season 5.

I’ve come across fans starting petitions for problematic cast members such as Big Ed Brown and Angela Deem to be canceled, but Happily Ever After? is where they found a home for several seasons. Big Ed kept breaking up with Liz and Angela kept abusing Michael without a care in the world. Something tells me the next season will repeat the same patterns. Is it time for 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?...

The Missed Star Trek Opportunity That Has Haunted Garrett Wang
Image
Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) has become the punchline of many jokes among Trekkies, mostly because of the poor sap's rank. Harry was a young engineer, newly awarded the rank of ensign, and eager to serve aboard his first assignment, the U.S.S. Voyager. He couldn't have predicted that the ship would almost instantly be magically whisked clear across the galaxy by a godlike alien, landing in the Delta Quadrant, 75 years away from Earth. "Star Trek: Voyager" lasted for seven years, and the title ship went through extensive travails in their quest to return home. And in all that time, Harry Kim remained an ensign, the lowest-ranked senior officer on the Voyager's bridge.

Was Kim incompetent? Quite the opposite. He was eager, ambitious, and intelligent. Kim's biggest flaw, at least at the beginning of the series, was his youthful inexperience. By the end, he had more experience than any ensign in Starfleet.

10 Friends Episodes That Were Surprisingly Dark
Image
Despite Friends' mostly light-hearted tone, many episodes include dark storylines and undertones that are out of the norm for the iconic sitcom. When outlining the elements behind the show's enduring popularity, the many excellent characters of Friends elevate it above its peers. These characters are incredibly realistic and their titular relationships with one another are often at the forefront of Friends' best-ever episodes. These episodes are spread out across the show's ten-year run, making it overly difficult to rank Friends' best seasons distinctly.

Regardless, it is safe to say the series remains one of the most popular sitcoms of all time due to its comedy, interpersonal relationships, heart, and the moments that defined Friends for generations. All that being said, there are some darker episodes of the series that may go unnoticed. Darkness in film and TV does not always mean outright sadness, as there are certainly moments of this ilk in Friends,...

5 Singers That Inspired Trap's Lady Raven
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Trap.

Salkea Shyamalan was inspired by several real-life singers when creating her pop star character Lady Raven in M. Night Shyamalan's 2024 thriller Trap. Josh Hartnett stars as a serial killer disguised as a supportive father in Trap. Trap also features the feature film debut of Shyamalan's daughter Saleka as pop singer Lady Raven, who plays a major role in the cast of Trap. Saleka's Lady Raven sings and performs throughout Trap at a concert venue where Hartnett's Cooper is being set up. Most of the original music in Trap was made specifically by Saleka under her fictional pop star name Lady Raven.

Trap features several real-life singers and rappers such as Kid Cudi, Amaarae, and Russ. Born in 1996, Saleka made her feature film acting debut in Trap. Her character, Lady Raven, is essentially a fictionalized version of her real-life stage name, Saleka, as a singer and recording artist.

The Unsung Hero Of Gilligan's Island, According To Bob Denver
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Every comedy team needs a straight man. Lou Costello had Bud Abbot. The Marx Brothers had Margaret Dumont. The Three Stooges had everyone they came in contact with. And while it may not sound like a good deal of fun to be the person setting up the funny folks for laughs, it does take a lot of skill to do it proficiently. And any comedian worth their weight in yuks knows the better the setup, the bigger the laugh.

This applies to many sitcoms, where the cast of zanies needs a steadily turning planet around which to wildly orbit. If you're really good at it, there could be multiple Primetime Emmys coming to you (e.g. Ed Asner won three for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"). And if you happen to find yourself on "Gilligan's Island," while there might not...

How is Nintendo so bad at letting creators share its games?
Image
Fandom is at the center of millions upon millions of YouTube videos–and gamers are especially passionate fans. So why is Nintendo so reluctant to let creators talk about its games?

The Kyoto, Japan-based game developer known for producing iconic video game IPs like The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario and Super Smash Bros., Pokémon, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and many, many more, has a contentious history with content creators. Back in YouTube’s early days, when creators’ Let’s Plays were making games like Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy’s into cultural zeitgeists that still churn out billions of views a month, Nintendo was busy copyright claiming any videos about its IPs. It would take 100% of revenue from those videos, and creators, understandably frustrated, had begun scaling back their Nintendo uploads, talking less and less about the games they loved.

Nintendo sort of sought to remedy this in 2015 with...

The Gilligan's Island Guest Star That Made Russell Johnson Lose His Cool
Image
In the "Gilligan's Island" episode "The Kidnapper", the castaways are found, but not in the most helpful way. A rogue kidnapper named Norbert Wiley (Don Rickles) has found his way to the island, and he begins to ply his trade immediately. He kidnaps Lovey Howell (Natalie Schafer) and demands the castaways pay $10,000. Mrs. Howell manages to give her kidnapper the slip, but he manages to kidnap Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) in exchange, now demanding $20,000. The cycle repeats itself again when Mary Ann escapes, and Norbert kidnaps Ginger (Tina Louise), demanding $30,000.

Eventually, the castaways capture Norbert using Gilligan (Bob Denver) as the ultimate bait. In a bamboo cage, Norbert explains that kidnapping is a compulsion for him and that he cannot be reformed. Ginger takes it upon herself to psychoanalyze him and reform him, while the Skipper and the Professor (Russell Johnson) repair the boat that brought him to the island.

‘After Midnight’ – An Underseen ’80s Horror Anthology
Image
I first discovered After Midnight (1989) during my freshman year of college. There at I Luv Video was this VHS tape that gave me nostalgia for a movie I actually hadn’t seen yet. The woman on the cover, a character played by Jillian McWhirter, was quite literally trapped in time, and the tagline beneath her fiery fate read: “Anything Can Happen in the Dark.” As it turned out, my little case of memory distortion was rather fitting; this movie starts off with someone having a vague recollection, albeit of a terrible event.

Growing up I had passed by After Midnight many times at my local video shop, but it wasn’t until some years later that I gave it a watch. And after witnessing the nightmarish fate of those college students enrolled in The Psychology of Fear, I was hooked. Jim and Ken Wheat’s movie — their horror debut as...

I’ll be honest here, as much as I love Glen Powell, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the first look Hulu shared. Let’s just say, the Twisters movie star is looking very different. That said, the first look did not discourage us from pinning the comedy so we can check back as more details are known.

The most recent update on the series comes from Deadline, as the source shares that four new actors have...

Will Smith’s Desire to Become As Big a Star as Tom Cruise Made Him Run Away From Making Movies on 1 Sensitive Topic Until He Watched a $425 Million Film
Image
The one-sided beef between Will Smith and Tom Cruise was indeed very real at one point. During his early years in Hollywood, Will Smith consciously steered clear of tackling heavy subjects like slavery. His approach began to shift, however, after he watched Django Unchained.

Will Smith from ‘Work Of Art’ Video Feat. Russ | Credits: YouTube (Will Smith)

The film just like it did for countless folks, had a profound impact on him, reshaping his views on the types of stories he wanted to tell about his community. Smith thus eventually chose to dive into the subject matter by starring in Emancipation, the 2022 movie.

Why Will Smith Avoided Films on This Particularly Heavy Subject Matter

Throughout much of his career, Will Smith focused on portraying Black characters in a positive, empowering light, deliberately steering clear of roles that delved into the deep struggles and injustices faced by his community. He sought...

1 Hilarious Star Trek: Voyager Tuvok Scene Actually Made No Sense
Image
Tuvok's stress dream during Star Trek: Voyager's "Waking Moments" made no sense thanks to his Vulcan nature. However, Tim Russ chose to rationalize Tuvok's embarrassment over showing up to work naked in another context, helping the scene. Voyager's writers chose Tuvok for comedic effect, which paid off even if the dream was illogical for his character.

Tuvok's (Tim Russ) most hilarious scene in Star Trek: Voyager season 4 actually made no sense when looked at objectively. As one of the few Vulcan members of Voyager's cast of characters, Tuvok didn't get many funny moments during the show's run, unless you count his sarcasm and dry wit which often made appearances. However, Tuvok did have occasional humorous scenes sprinkled in during his tenure on the show, and no scene was better than one the opened season 4, episode 13, "Waking Moments."

During the episode, Voyager's crew was attacked by aliens who seemed to...
