Short Film Review: Fleck (2019) by Jing Ai Ng

Malaysia-born, Miami-rised, Los Angeles-based Jing Ai Ng writes and directs “Fleck”, her thesis work for the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory, that she attended as the first director of Malaysian origin. Her coming of age feminine drama recently earned Jing an award for the 2019 Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Student Grand Prize in the Asian-American category.

The film focuses on reserved Asian American student Jamie (Stacy Chu) attending an exclusive boarding school in the Us. It’s the age of discoveries and Jamie is exploring her desires, her sense of friendship, her vulnerability and boundaries. But it is also the age of camaraderie, secret diaries, gentle mocking, shared rooms and bathrooms, and the thrill of breaking the rules.
