Actor-turned-director Jang Dong-yoon returns behind the camera with his second directorial effort after the short “Please Be My Ear,” this time stepping away from acting to focus solely on writing and directing. Drawing its narrative foundation from the traditional Korean rice wine makgeolli, “The Yeast” becomes a layered meditation on family, obsession, and self-restoration.
The Yeast is screening at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
Set in a modest makgeolli brewery in rural Korea, the story centers on 18-year-old Da-seul, who leads a quiet life assisting her father with their artisanal brewing. Their signature flavor comes from a mysterious, aged nuruk, a fermentation starter, whose origin is long forgotten. Due to the unverifiable nature of the ingredient, their product cannot be officially distributed, limiting them to local sales under the radar.
Conflict arises when Da-seul’s older brother, Da-hyeon, convinced that their mother’s death was tied to alcohol consumption...

On June 10, the official press conference of the 29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival officially kicked off the 29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (July 3~July 13).
Festival Director Shin Chul declared that Bifan has entered “AI Step 2” this year, following last year’s initial stage, and shared an ambitious goal to train 10,000 filmmakers over the next five years. Director Shin also referenced a famous remark by German filmmaker Werner Herzog, who once said, “Even after 4,500 years, computers will not make better films than I do.” He continued, “We trained an AI model using Herzog’s scripts, interviews, and other materials. The result was a screenplay titled “About a Hero”, which has been selected as this year’s Opening Film at Bifan.”

K-dramas, South Korean scripted television of any genre, are gaining in popularity worldwide without showing any signs of slowing down. But while shows like "Squid Game" and the chart-topping "Bloodhounds" are certainly deserving of their place in the spotlight, quite a few K-dramas stand overlooked and under-appreciated in their shadow. While these series might not get the international streaming success or buzz like their more prominent counterparts, they are worthy of being recognized as some of the best K-dramas ever. Like so much television programming that comes out of Korea, there are shows for every genre fan that go by without their time in the global sun.
Whether it's shows on streaming services little known for K-drama content or stories that go against the expected norms, there are a variety of reasons why these series are overlooked. Fortunately, many are still available to international audiences who may have missed them upon their initial debuts.

Horror K-dramas, the common term for South Korean scripted horror TV shows, have become enormously popular worldwide, including titles like the supernatural thriller "Hellbound" and zombie series "All of Us Are Dead." However, they've also managed to attract controversy, particularly from discerning Korean audiences, based on narrative elements and production details. One particular horror K-drama, "Joseon Exorcist," was even canceled right after the medieval series debuted in March 2021. Because of the public backlash to the show's historical content, including its contentious props, only two episodes of "Joseon Exorcist" were ever released before it was pulled off the air.
Set in the early 15th century, during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, "Joseon Exorcist" reimagines Taejong (Kam Woo-sung) and his sons as supernatural warriors. In order to defend their kingdom, Taejong and the two princes vanquish demons and other monsters looking to plunge Joseon into ruin. Hence, in...

Quality K-Dramas are abundant, but those with 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores are worth the watch. Like Flowers in Sand has me wondering if Jang Dong-Yoon is a professional athlete, because those running skills are incredible. We’ve got to admit, it’s incredible how the Korean entertainment industry mixes small-town slice-of-life with crime thrillers. This one is an especially impressive show with its inspiring storytelling and sweet message. However, things are getting moody now that we’re approaching the show’s end. We’ve passed the mid-way mark, so it’s time to get into the gritty details of what went down in this town, not just in the recent past but 20 years ago. Last week, Hyeon-Uk noticed there was something strange about Mi-Ran, and this week we’re going to learn how she’s connected with Du-Sik and the rest of the ssireum team.

Netflix’s new K-drama, Like Flowers in Sand, is a series without waste — a deliberate, consoling dive into ssireum, a traditional form of South Korean wrestling, set in an unassuming Geosan town reflected perfectly in Jang Dong-yoon’s earnest and unrefined Kim Baek-doo. The series begins as Baek-doo’s ssireum career ostensibly ends. A former childhood prodigy, the 33-year-old has failed to win a senior championship. As a scion of a family of winners, in a town defined by ssireum, no one can explain his failure. After getting blackout drunk,...

It’s almost the end of the year, and Netflix doesn’t seem to be done with serving Korean content just yet. The Korean entertainment industry is all in this time of the year, and we’re getting a taste of everything they have to offer! From the reality dating show Single’s Inferno to the highly anticipated Gyeongseong Creature and Death Game, the holidays seem to be covered for us, but Like Flowers in Sand may turn out to be the underdog that takes us by surprise, just like its protagonist. Like Flowers in Sand stars Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Joo-Myoung in leading roles and follows the story of a “Ssireum” athlete (a traditional wrestling sport) who gives up after losing too many championships. When his childhood friend returns, she reignites the sporty spark in him.

Project Wolf Hunting begins with a mass return of Korean criminals captured in the Philippines. As they’re being led through Seoul airport somebody with a grudge against one of them detonates a suicide bomb killing himself, his target, and everyone else in the vicinity. To avoid a repeat of this, the next group is to be transported on the Frontier Titan, a specially fitted out cargo ship and delivered to a pier in Busan harbour to which the public doesn’t have access. I guess simply flying them into a military base never crossed anyone’s mind.
The Frontier Titan leaves Manilla with forty-seven criminals, twenty guards, two medics, and the ship’s crew. At least that’s what they think they’re leaving with because...

Kim Hong-Sun’s movies are always intensely thrilling and, more often than not, they are also quite violent. The 2017 title “The Age of Blood” was Hong-Sun’s debut feature-length film. Operating as a nonstop action adventure and period piece, “The Age of Blood” told the story of a swordsman who quickly finds himself immersed in an attempted prison break, and must do everything in his capacity to keep the escaping convicts at bay. In “Project Wolf Hunting,” Hong-Sun returns to the escaped convict motif. This time around, though, things get a little bit… weirder. “Project Wolf Hunting” is a rampant action-horror mashup; although not for the faint of heart, the movie is wildly entertaining and contains enough twists and turns to keep audiences on their seats all-throughout.
