The Handmaid’s Tale concluded its critically lauded six-season run in May 2025. Now, Hulu is bringing viewers back to the same world with The Testaments, a show based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. This sequel will be set 15 years after the finale of the original show and explore how Gilead has evolved through the eyes of a new generation of women.
Even though the regime is still in power, cracks of dissent and resistance are starting to appear within. Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale will find that even though the new show will have fresh faces leading it, there will be returning characters as well.
Also, it will follow the continuity of the original show. After all, Bruce Miller, who was in charge of The Handmaid’s Tale, is back for this new journey, and Elisabeth Moss will be in an executive producer role on the show.

[This story contains major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]
The final scene between June (Elisabeth Moss) and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) left a lot unsaid. But if you talk to the actors who play the starring wife and husband in The Handmaid’s Tale, they are pretty clear on where the show leaves them.
In a previous finale conversation with Moss, the star and director of the final episode told The Hollywood Reporter that their final conversation was one of hope. After everything they have been through over the course of the Hulu saga’s six seasons, she said they went back to the beginning. “We had this idea to play it like they were flirting with each other, like they had crushes,” she said of her scene partner. “There’s such a circular nature to the finale and absolutely I think there’s a lot of hope for the two of them.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” star Elisabeth Moss says the Hulu show’s “super meta” finale wasn’t quite an ending at all, but rather the beginning of June’s long fight to bring Hannah (Jordana Blake) home.
After an intense, emotional and heartbreaking Episode 9, Episode 10 titled “The Handmaid’s Tale” came in to wrap up the series with some sweet character returns, tender farewells and a final scene that serves as PSA that June will stay at the forefront of the resistance trying to take down Gilead.
“We put so much thought into it. We thought about lots of alternatives, lots of ideas,” Moss told TheWrap. “There were ideas that felt too convenient, or that wouldn’t lead to the sequel, ‘The Testaments,’ which we’re making. So there’s things that we just felt didn’t quite work. This was...

As The Handmaid's Tale comes to an end, the Hulu series' showrunner publicly addressed what happened to June's daughter Hannah (played by Jordana Blake). In the show's gripping finale, Elizabeth Moss' June took the spotlight for one last time. A significant component of this final chapter for the longtime TV character were flashes back to her interacting with her estranged daughter (who is now living in Colorado with Jason Butler Harner's Commander Mackenzie) in a time before the rise of Gilead, but in the present timeline, it was made unclear if the mother-daughter pair ever got to see each other again.
Coming off of the Handmaid's Tale series finale, showrunner Yahlin Chang explained why June and Hannah never reunited by the end of the show, pointing to an adaptation of Magaret Atwood's sequel book, The Testaments, as one of the primary reasons that it did not happen.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Showrunner Teases Aunt Lydia's “Very, Very Different” Role in ‘The Testaments’
After six seasons that aired from April 26, 2017 to May 27, 2025, The Handmaid’s Tale came to an end, but unfortunately without June (Elisabeth Moss) reuniting with her kidnapped daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake). Hannah was not seen much in the dystopian show’s final run, but she’s set to be one of the leads of the upcoming spin-off, The Testaments, which will continue the tragic story of Gilead. Production is currently ongoing for the follow-up in Toronto, Canada, and in addition to Hannah, it has already been previously confirmed that Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) is another returning central character.
Days before The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 concluded, executive producer Warren Littlefield hinted at how Lydia’s new perspective in the wake of the Jezebels' massacre will reshape her mindset going into The Testaments. Now, the spin-off’s showrunner, Bruce Miller, also the creator of the original series, is teasing how much of the character can be expected,...

While June (Elisabeth Moss) and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) were tragically not reunited with their kidnapped daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), Hannah’s story isn’t over yet. And we know that Hannah, who was renamed Agnes by her Gilead parents, will still be living in Gilead in the spinoff. With June and Luke still alive and fighting for Mayday and fighting to find Hannah in The Handmaid’s Tale series finale’s end, the door is open for them to appear in the spinoff centering their daughter. Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 10!The Handmaid's Tale showrunners Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman explain the one June reunion that couldn't happen in the series finale and why the storyline wasn't fully resolved. Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 10!The Handmaid's Tale creator Bruce Miller and star Elisabeth Moss have addressed June's (Moss) possible return in The Testaments following the first show's end. The Handmaid's Tale season 6 ended with Boston getting liberated after June and her fellow Handmaids killed all the Commanders in the city. While there are many amicable reunions and endings for the show's major characters, the series clarifies that June and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) are still going to fight to find Hannah (Jordana Blake). This indicates they'll still be doing so when the sequel series, The Testaments, begins.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller and Moss explained that it's possible June will show up in The Testaments. The series creator and former showrunner explained that, as the events of the new show unfold, the former protagonist will still be trying to get Hannah back. This makes it possible she will return.

The Handmaid’s Tale‘s creator Bruce Miller always knew how he was going to end the series. But he knew that when the show reached its ending, June’s story would circle back to where it began, but with new perspective.
“This is definitely not a story where you get what you want most of the time — or where June gets what she wants. It’s a story about how to live with the things you can’t get,” Miller explains to The Hollywood Reporter about the series finale.

[This story contains spoilers from season six, episode seven of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Shattered.”]
“It was Nick who told me everything.”
The Handmaid Tale‘s June (Elisabeth Moss) first heard those words while hiding in a closet with Nick (Max Minghella), as High Commander Wharton (Josh Charles) informed fiancée Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) that his son-in-law helped him thwart what could have been a debilitating attack on Gilead High Commanders at Jezebel’s, orchestrated by June and the Mayday resistance group.
The sixth episode in the final season of the Hulu series ended on that cliffhanger moment as viewers watched June internally digest what she just heard. This week’s seventh hour, “Shattered,” then picked up in that closet. The episode quickly zoomed over to Jezebel’s to show viewers the devastating consequences of Nick’s betrayal of June: All of the Jezebels (women who are forced to be sex slaves for High Commanders) are brutally shot and killed by Gilead officers.

Finally, after two long years spent dangling in the air from The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 cliffhanger finale, the award-winning dystopian saga is back with season 6, also known as the final season. Hulu debuted the last part of June’s (Elisabeth Moss) fight to rescue her daughter and put a stop to Gilead on Tuesday, April 8 with a three-episode premiere that saw our plot move forward after reaching its most critical stage yet.
Season 5 saw some major turning points riddled with deeply personal stakes, betrayal, and changing power dynamics. Tensions between Gilead and the U.S. government intensified after an American military operation to rescue children failed horribly and resulted in numerous deaths. Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) created a more liberal province within Gilead called New Bethlehem, where there are no handmaids, hangings, or abuse. June and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) ventured into No Man’s Land only to get captured and separated.

The biggest question for The Handmaid’s Tale viewers heading into the sixth and final season was what was going to happen to June and Serena after they got on that train.
The three-episode premiere of the Emmy-winning dystopian Hulu saga quickly answered that question by setting its starring women on diverging paths once again for the final chapter in this Gilead story. Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) ends up jumping from the train, with her baby son in her arms, to escape a mob of Gilead refugee women looking for revenge against the former Gilead wife. She eventually makes her way back to Gilead via New Bethlehem, the reformed community founded by Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) where she is needed to recruit refugees.

The Handmaid’s Tale has always been about a mother’s journey back to her daughter. When playing that mother at the center of Margaret Atwood’s tale on the Emmy-winning Hulu series, Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne had her first daughter ripped from her arms at the height of the formation of Gilead, the dystopian society at the center of the saga that stripped women of their human rights. The Handmaid’s Tale traveled outside the confines of Gilead for much of season five, expanding the story of June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss, after her escape from the totalitarian society at the center of the Hulu series. The first two episodes, in fact, picked up in Canada in the 24 hours after the show’s most violent act yet, when June led her fellow handmaid’s in the brutal murder of her former abuser, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).
And those episodes, both directed by Moss, kicked off the tone of the entire penultimate season, explain cinematographer Nicola Daley, costume designer Leslie Kavanagh and composer Adam Taylor in a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. Particularly when the double-episode premiere ended with June’s abducted daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) being used as a pawn by June’s Gilead nemesis Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) during the worldwide broadcast of Fred’s funeral.

Nick and June's romance has run its course in The Handmaid's Tale, making the plot line no longer a source of excitement. As a conditional phenomenon, Nick and June's love affair only ever made sense because of their shared residence at the Waterfords' household that resulted in Nichole, their love child (forced by Serena Joy). With The Handmaid's Tale season 4 effectively separating them — June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) reunited with her husband Luke in Canada, and Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) becoming a Commander in Gilead — their romantic future should have already been sealed.
Throughout The Handmaid's Tale season 5, the show has made it excruciatingly obvious that Nick and June can't be together by repeatedly reuniting them for information exchanges and pseudo-family visits with Nichole in tow. These reunions usually go the same way with both of them professing their love for each other, soft encouragements to be "happy and safe," and...

Christine Baranski‘s surprise inclusion for “The Good Fight” wasn’t the only shocker that last year’s Best Drama TV Actress Golden Globe lineup delivered. After being left out for the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” two years earlier, Elisabeth Moss returned to the category for its fourth installment. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which had shut out Season 3 of the Hulu drama across the board, had seemingly moved on from the show and rarely invites people back to the party after dropping them for a regular series. The fact that Moss was able to overcome all these hurdles is a feather in her cap, and the reason you shouldn’t be caught off guard if she now pulls off yet another nomination, for Season 5, despite facing much stiffer competition this time around.
In hindsight, the actor’s return to the TV drama actress lineup shouldn’t have been that surprising at all.

Toto, we’re not in Gilead anymore.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” stayed focused on its central dystopia until Season 4, when June (Elisabeth Moss) escaped to Canada, and even then she couldn’t escape Gilead. June returned multiple times, including in Season 5 to rescue her daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) from a life of subservience to men.
But the world has changed by the Season 5 finale, “Safe,” which premiered November 9. Gilead is crumbling from within, mainly at the hands of its architect, Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). The Waterfords, two of its most prolific and vocal advocates, are no more, with Fred dead (Joseph Fiennes) and his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) questioning her path forward. It’s Serena’s grueling internal journey and June’s willingness to compromise that brings both of them to the same time, place, and goal when they meet on a train in the Season 5 finale.

At the end of the two-episode premiere, Serena had brought June’s Gilead-captive daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), into view during a global broadcast of the funeral for her late husband, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) — and shot the camera a knowing smirk intended for June. Thousands of miles away in Canada, June received the message loud and clear.
But the world of The Handmaid’s Tale moves quickly and, by the pivotal seventh episode, June was faced with the impossible choice of helping Serena deliver her newborn baby or letting her die when the pair were stranded together in No Man’s Land,...

Warning! This article Contains spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale season 5, episode 9 "Allegiance," future episodes, and Margaret Atwood's book The Testaments! Commander Joseph Lawrence just teased Hannah's book fate by telling June that she's never leaving Gilead, basically setting up her Testaments story in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. Two years away from being shipped off as a child bride, 10-year-old Hannah (Jordana Blake) resides at a Gileadan wives school under the tutelage of Aunts teaching them how to manage a household. With the knowledge that their poor baby is going to be married soon, June (Elisabeth Moss) and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) are desperate, now more than ever, to reunite with their daughter, Hannah Bankole (known as Agnes MacKenzie in Gilead.)
Based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, The Handmaid's Tale, Hulu's screen adaptation has flowed beyond its original source material and is slowly weaving some storylines from the 2019 book sequel called The Testaments.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale season 5, episode 9 "Allegiance"! The Handmaid's Tale season 5, episode 9 shares a shocking revelation regarding Agnes Mackenzie, also known as Hannah Bankole, June Osborne and Luke Bankole's estranged daughter who they have been trying to rescue since Gilead came to be. As Agnes, Hannah (Jordana Blake) becomes the foster daughter of Commander MacKenzie and his wife which renders her (technically) safe from most of Gilead’s atrocities – save for her impending marriage. Two years shy from becoming a Gileadean child bride, 10-year-old Hannah attends a wives' school to be primed for her own household as a future wife. However, despite her apparent indoctrination, there is evidence that all hope is not lost for Hannah.
Like the other abducted kids in the Republic of Gilead, Hannah’s years in the system make it easy to assume her adherence to its totalitarian and theocratic ways.

[The story contains spoilers from the ninth episode of season five of The Handmaid’s Tale.]
Bradley Whitford recalls a key tip he received when directing his first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The script is often lying, he was told by creator and showrunner Bruce Miller. And as a director, it was his job to tell the truth.
For his first episode behind the camera — the ninth episode and penultimate hour of season five, “Allegiance” — the actor who plays Gilead Commander Lawrence was tasked with seeking out the truth about his own character. For the past couple episodes, Lawrence has been trying to convince June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) to return to Gilead — the oppressive regime and country she escaped — and live in New Bethlehem, a modernized, liberal island settlement where refugees can return with amnesty and reunite with lost family and friends. A step in the right direction, he says, to help redeem himself...

To stay in business over a long time, a series has to evolve. I understand that. But reinvention is tricky and in the search for more road, a series can also lose its way. The Handmaid’s Tale is not the taut, menacing thriller it once was.
In truth, I’m not sure it has any politics anymore. Men like Commander Lawrence, Gilead’s main architect, are allowed to take a hero’s turn, however slight, while women are reduced to hysterical rage. June, Serena, Mrs Wheeler, and Rita, who last week told June that she would return to Gilead if it meant she could see her son again. This week, its the Canadians who attend the grand opening of Gilead’s Toronto fertility centre. On The Handmaid’s Tale, women are increasingly led by their wombs.
