In the era of legacy sequels, it was only a matter of time before 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer was also revived for the modern-day. From the title to the threatening image of a hook, it is an iconic slice of ’90s horror which helped revitalise the slasher subgenre and is remembered fondly as part of many viewers’ nostalgia. But, to borrow a line from returning final-girl Julie James, “Nostalgia is overrated,” as we are now left with 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Returning to her hometown of Southport, Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonders) reunites with her past friends at the engagement party for her bestie, Danica Richards (Madelyn Cline). As the...

There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) in theatres now (JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols gave it a 4/10 “dumpster fire” review that can be read at This Link). Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the first two films, and Freddie Prinze Jr., who was Julie’s boyfriend Ray Bronson in those films, reprise their roles – and they’re facing off with a new “Fisherman” killer that’s stalking a whole new cast. The movie features a twist that has been upsetting a lot of fans of the original movies, though, and in an interview with Variety, Hewitt took the opportunity to defend that twist. So we’re going to have to dig into Spoiler territory before we get to her defense.

Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer was as fulfilling of a legacy sequel as they come. It’s difficult to blend legacy with something completely new, but filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and her co-scribe, Sam Lansky, did so almost completely seamlessly, delivering a worthy follow-up to the two canon films of the late ‘90s. For years, fans of franchises like Halloween and Scream have been calling for a huge upheaval that would see one of the primary protagonists switch teams and go to bat for the villains. While — so far — other film series haven’t fully gone there, I Know What You Did Last Summer took that leap of faith and turned Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Og character, Ray Bronson, into a rain-slicker-wearing, hook-wielding killer. The creative decision has fans and critics divided,...

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to I Know What You Did Last Summer came down to a deep “love” of the horror franchise. The 45-year-old actress is reprising her role as Julie James nearly 30 years after first appearing in the iconic teen slasher, and has now credited the new film’s creative team with bringing the franchise back with a lot of heart. She told Variety of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky: “What was very apparent from the word ‘Go’ is how much both of them loved the original movie.“I feel like, if you’re going to go back and make something new but pay homage to an original, you have to love it. You have to understand it. “So, I was just blown away and it meant a lot to me.”The new instalment, set for release in 2025, follows a fresh group of teenagers in Southport,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers from “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” now in theaters.
Sarah Michelle Gellar never thought there would be an “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie released in 2025.
“I don’t think I had that one pegged,” Gellar told me Thursday at the taping of the Las Culturistas Culture Awards in Los Angeles.
The new movie, directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, follows a group of former high school friends being targeted by a serial killer a year after they were involved in a deadly car accident.
“Jenn Robinson brought it up to me like three or four years ago – this has been a long process – I thought, ‘It’s such a good idea, but you don’t know. Do people still love the movie? Do people still watch the movie?’” Gellar said.

This article contains major spoilers for "I Know What You Did Last Summer" 2025.
1997's "I Know What You Did Last Summer," along with the series of films (and TV show) that followed it, is generally regarded as a slasher. More specifically, it's a whodunit slasher, the type that carries on the tradition of murder mysteries made famous by Agatha Christie as much as they revel in staging kill scenes. This type of slasher tends to tone down the element of the supernatural as seen in something like John Carpenter's "Halloween," which contains a lot of mysterious goings-on involving its masked killer that can't be easily explained or rationalized. This tone for "Ikwydls" was established in large part by Lois Duncan's 1973 novel of the same name, but "Ikwydls" screenwriter Kevin Williamson reworked the murder mystery into a more true-to-form slasher, much to Duncan's chagrin.

It's always great to watch an acting duo who have an on-screen chemistry that has snowballed into a very robust relationship off-screen. It always helps, especially when they have to star alongside each other in rom-coms. The entire experience is elevated on the strength of their synergy. On the red carpet for the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer earlier this week, Freddie Prinze Jr. revealed to Deadline that he’s gearing up to shoot a brand-new holiday romantic comedy, The Christmas Affair. Even better? He’ll be reuniting with a familiar face, his She’s All Thatco-star, Rachael Leigh Cook.
The project will mark a full-circle moment for both stars, who have worked closely in previous films. According to the actor, filming will take place in New York City this October and November. The project promises to be more than just a sugary holiday flick, bringing...

I Know What You Did Last Summer director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson doesn’t want to see a cell phone on a movie screen.
“I’ve done this in all of my movies, for better or worse. I don’t like social media and phones,” says the 37-year-old director. “I don’t want to look at a phone screen. I don’t want to see you text-messaging. I just don’t care.”
There is something inherently ridiculous in asking audiences to leave their plentiful screens at home to go to a theater to watch a big screen, only to be confronted with a character incessantly looking at small screens. Still, when those characters are a gaggle of 20-somethings being stalked by a hook-wielding and slicker-wearing homicidal maniac, there is surely cause for some cellular activity.
“Would all of these people be texting all the time? Sure. But I don’t care.

In the twenty-seven and a half years since the first incarnation of I Know What You Did Last Summer assaulted movie theaters in 1997, the film has spawned a 1998 sequel as well as a 2021 television series. Now, the story returns to theaters with a reinvented version that does little to warrant the continuation of the franchise moving forward, despite multiple nods to previous installments that will surely please fans of the series.

Smart, funny, scary, and sexy, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is the perfect summer entertainment, an escapist thriller that raises serious moral questions but never gets bogged down by them. Both a sequel to the 1997 slasher film of the same name and an origin story for a new set of characters who coexist with series regulars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., “I Know What You Did Last Summer” pays respect to its predecessor (as well as 1998’s underrated “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”) without being paralyzed by its influence — it’s a movie as exciting in the new directions it takes as it is satisfying in its recreations of the first film’s pleasures.

The anticipated legacy sequel to 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer finally arrives in theaters on July 18, and the reviews are trickling in. So was the follow-up feature worth the wait? On Rotten Tomatoes, 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summercurrently holds a 46% rating from 46 reviews, indicating that it is, at best, a mixed bag. The new slasher stars Madelyn Cline as Danica Richards, Chase Sui Wonders as Ava Brucks, and Jonah Hauer-King as Milo Griffin, among others, and welcomes back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to reprise their roles.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer also didn't impress critics. While it was a commercial success that topped the US box office for three consecutive weeks, it holds just a 45% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Over time, however, it has become a cult classic.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Review – Sequel Delivers Slasher Fun But Remains Stuck in the Past
Time is a flat circle in the legacy sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer. Nearly three decades after an ill-fated accident led to tragedy, then murder, a new group of friends unwittingly stumble down the same path, awakening the Fisherman’s wrath once more. Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), who co-wrote with Sam Lansky, uses Southport’s latest slasher cycle to not quite re-write the past but rather honor the franchise’s legacy while updating it for modern audiences. Armed with a blood-thirstier killer, Robinson’s installment narrowly avoids the pitfalls of legacy sequels and their overreliance on trauma in favor of slasher fun.
Mirroring the 1997 original film, I Know What You Did Last Summer introduces a close-knit friend group of early 20-somethings who have returned to their hometown of Southport around the Fourth of July for the engagement party of Danica (Madelyn Cline) and Teddy (Tyriq Withers...

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer wants so desperately to be this franchise’s Scream (2022), but it’s a failure by comparison. I’d say act like you’ve been there, but the truth is, I Know What You Did Last Summer has never been on Scream’s level. The original has its fans, but I Still Know What You Did Last Summer feels like a worse version of Club Dread, and let’s not even acknowledge 2006’s unwatchable straight-to-video threequel. Director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is tasked with rebooting a series that hasn’t been relevant since the late 90s, but she never finds a balance between nostalgia bait and revamped storytelling. It’s worth a few laughs, roasting how outlandish prior knowings of last summerses are, yet the experience is an overlong mess that frustrates far more than it delights.

It’s not a good idea to heat up old fish in public. Those leftovers almost always stink, and the smell is particularly bad if the fish was iffy to begin with. By that logic, Sony’s new “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a reboot/sequel of the now-iconic but then-mediocre fisherman slasher from 1997, should reek like low tide. But director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson made the catch of the season with this lean, mean serial killer flick.
Set once again in the tortured coastal town of Southport, North Carolina, this sinister seafood surprise returns Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to a world that remembers their nautical nightmare better than we do. Kevin Williamson’s original film — about a killer fisherman and four teens involved in a hit-and-run accident — came just one year after his legendary horror comedy, “Scream.” The two titles showed the screenwriter’s range,...

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" holds a special place in the pantheon of horror — not for breaking new ground, but for being a prime example of late-'90s studio opportunism dressed up in blood and teen angst. Loosely adapted from Lois Duncan's ominously titled YA thriller that was a staple of every junior high library, the script was penned by at-the-time up-and-coming screenwriter Kevin Williamson. Unfortunately, the film didn't move the needle, and it was discarded by Columbia Pictures. But then Williamson teamed up with Wes Craven for "Scream," ushering in a slasher renaissance that had every studio in town desperate to cash in.
"Ikwydls" was hastily exhumed and rushed into production, now boasting the golden tagline "from the writer of 'Scream,'" which basically guaranteed a box office bloodbath. Even better, the production nabbed the lightning in a bottle ensemble casting of Jennifer Love Hewitt,...

How do you make a legacy sequel when you’re unsure what your legacy even is? That’s the question plaguing I Know What You Did Last Summer, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s update of the 1997 slasher of the same name. Stuffed to the idiomatic gills with thudding callbacks, hoary one-liners, and phoned-in cameos, the film feels like the predictable endpoint of a trend toward empty nostalgia that’s run through all the big fish in horror cinema and is now coming to swallow up whatever might be left behind.
After the events of the summer that still haunt Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), the North Carolina fishing village of Southport suffered an economic downturn, giving land developer Grant Spencer (Billy Campell) an opportunity to turn it into the “Hamptons of the South.” Among Southport’s new generation of rich young people is Ava...

Written by Kevin Williamson soon after the success of the iconic horror picture Scream, 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer somehow has an enduring cultural legacy despite being a mostly straightforward slasher. The second attempt to reboot the franchise for the 2020s (after a failed Prime Video show in 2021), Jennifer Kaitlyn Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer follows in the footsteps of the original in that it’s a straightforward, pretty generic slasher.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Review
Like the original film, I Know What You Did Last Summer follows a group of friends who find themselves pursued by a vengeful killer after a tragic hit-and-run accident the year before. One of the most frustrating things about Robinson’s take on Ikwydls is that it feels desperate in its attempts to be trendy. While some moments, including a clever reference to the Nicole Kidman AMC ad,...

“So here we are, it’s 1997 all over again,” one of the characters says tellingly in I Know What You Did Last Summer. That line, of course, is not from the original film in the series but rather its same-titled “legacy sequel,” which, if you’re not familiar with Hollywood parlance, basically means “Let’s see if we can squeeze more dollars out of this sucker.” Slavishly reminiscent of its predecessors, the film also features so many Easter eggs that it mainly serves as canned nostalgia.
Those throwbacks, ironically, are the most fun aspect of this new installment, which is unlikely to garner the same sort of cult following as the 1997 original. The concept remains the same, with a group of extremely good-looking young people (here in their mid-20s rather than teen years) covering up a violent death for which they were responsible. Cut to a year later, when...

“Nostalgia is overrated,” proclaims Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt). She’s just been through a convoluted domino of events and been thrust back into the town of Southport, which is laughably not anything like the North Carolina it is supposed to take place in. It’s an odd line; we’ve just watched 100 minutes of nostalgia-ridden dialogue. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s legacy sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer is nothing if not packed with direct references to its 1997 origin film, a vapid, utterly hollow husk of revival. And when it isn’t copy-pasting lines straight out of Hewitt’s mouth it resorts to an almost impressively high level of pandering to its Gen Z audience.
The whole thing begs the question, “Who is this even for?” Why are we making a legacy sequel to a slasher that has only remained relevant as a footnote to its far superior cultural touchstone,...

Poor Julie James can’t seem to catch a break. Jennifer Love Hewitt‘s then-teenage character was first traumatized by a certain Ben Willis (Muse Watson), the vengeful fisherman who killed his victims with a fish hook. So traumatized that she had to yell “What are you waiting for?!” not once but twice in the first two movies. She did manage to get rid of the somewhat unstoppable Ben Willis at the end of the second movie in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
Besides, emptying the bullets from a revolver all over his chest at point-blank range should be more than enough to kill him for good. But then again, Julie’s nightmare was far from over. Ben Willis was somehow alive, and the last time we saw him, he ended up pulling her from under the bed. Wasn’t he supposed to die, or was it...

Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez were cut from the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel
There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) coming our way from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), aiming for a July 18 theatrical release. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the first two films, and Freddie Prinze Jr., who was Julie’s boyfriend Ray Bronson in those films, are reprising their roles – and they’re going to be facing off with a new “Fisherman” killer that’s stalking a whole new cast. Unfortunately, two of the announced cast members didn’t make it into the finished film, as Robinson has revealed that the scene involving Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story) was cut out.

Nearly 30 summers later, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reunited for Monday’s world premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
On the red carpet at the United Artists Theater in Dtla, Prinze told Deadline “it was very surreal” sharing the screen with Hewitt again as they reprised their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James in writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s update of the 1997 slasher film.
“It was weird, man,” said Prinze. “I never went to a high school reunion, but it was close to that as I could imagine ’cause I hadn’t seen her in 20-plus years.”
Prinze walked the red carpet with his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar, whom he met on the set of the original, and who previously sparked rumors of her return when she got in trouble for leaking a photo from set while visiting her husband.

The past comes back to haunt in the upcoming legacy slasher sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer, from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge).
The Fisherman is back and more vicious than ever when five friends cover up their involvement in a deadly car accident. One year later, they are targeted; someone knows what they did last summer and is hellbent on revenge.
The good news for the newcomers is that survivors Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) are back, bringing invaluable experience with them when it comes to dodging that mean hook.
It’s not just experience that these legacy characters bring with them, but emotional baggage and trauma that amassed in the wake of time and outlasting two rounds with the Fisherman. It also means that the road to romance for Julie and Ray hasn’t been the smoothest since we last saw them.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson with a script by Robinson and Sam Lansky, I Know What You Did Last Summer is the latest horror legacy sequel to hit the big screen. The fourth film in the Ikwydls franchise is bringing back surviving characters from the original films, like Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson.
The plot pairs them alongside a fresh crop of new potential victims hoping to escape a similar killer. One popular survivor of the previous I Know What You Did Last Summer films who could also make an appearance is Brandy's Karla Wilson, who escaped Ben Willis' murderous rampage in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Although she hasn't been confirmed to be in the film by any of the promotional materials, the film's creatives suggested that the franchise isn't entirely done with Karla yet.

The 2025 movie is the fourth feature-length installment in the slasher franchise, which follows groups of teens being targeted by a slicker-wearing, hook-wielding killer. The upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer features a new crop of teens being targeted for a vehicular manslaughter they covered up the year before, aided by returning survivors Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), who were central to the original 1997 movie and its 1998 sequel.
