The first M3GAN, which introduced audiences to their favorite modern-day killer robot, is a full horror movie. This second film made some big changes, going from scary to full sci-fi action. If M3GAN 3 were to happen, the star behind the robotic doll would want to see it become a robot rom-com.

M3GAN 2.0 surprised many with its genre switch, as it introduced Ivanna Sakhno's villainous Amelia, intent on destroying the world. Thankfully, Megan was talked into becoming a hero by Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw), and she sacrificed herself to save the day.

The Black Phone and Black Phone 2 actor Madeleine McGraw is set to star in SuperUnknown, a coming-of-age creature thriller per Deadline.

SuperUnknown is written by Chris and Charlie Frazier and to be directed by sibling filmmakers Chris and Nick Riedell, aka The Brothers Riedell.

The supernatural thriller follows “a high schooler who discovers his parents have been harboring a supernatural creature. Subsequently, he and his bandmates must face off with the creature as it escapes and terrorizes their suburban town.”

No details have been provided so far on McGraw’s role, but production is expected to begin this fall.

The 16-year-old actor received the CinemaCon Rising Star of 2025 Award earlier this year, ahead of reprising her role as the mouthy fan-favorite, Gwen, in this fall’s sequel Black Phone 2. McGraw also recently starred in The Curse of the Necklace with younger sister Violet McGraw (M3GAN).

You never know what's going to make waves on the internet, but "M3GAN" sure did. The trailer for Gerard Johnstone's killer AI flick blew up on account of the titular robot serving, slashing, and, most importantly, doing a weird little dance for everyone to meme into oblivion. Not only did "M3GAN" end up being a pretty fun horror comedy with a mean edge, it also gave Blumhouse a new figure they could potentially build a franchise around. "M3GAN 2.0" takes a page out of the "Terminator 2" handbook by flipping the script and making M3GAN an ally (of which she would be so proud) on the side of good.

M3GAN 2.0's digital release date has been revealed. The Blumhouse sequel continues the story of the titular AI robot introduced in the hit 2023 film M3GAN. It sees the return of several lead cast members, including Allison Williams, Jenna Davis, Amie Donald, and Violet McGraw, and adds cast members including Jemaine Clement and Ivanna Sakhno.

The sequel's box office vastly underperformed when compared to the original's totals. At the time of writing, M3GAN 2.0 has made just $36.4 million worldwide. This is only slightly more than M3GAN's domestic box office opening ($30.4 million), and far less than the first movie's $180 million worldwide gross.

As per Universal, the digital release date has been revealed for M3GAN 2.0. It willarrive on digital starting on Tuesday, July 15. This is not just any M3GAN 2.0, however, but an unrated cut of the film that features a version not seen in theaters and 30 minutes of exclusive bonus content.

In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Johnstone didn't specify when or how the uncut version would be released. While the original feature created a social media frenzy unlike any other and made it one of the profitable horror flicks of the year, the sequel heavily underperformed in equal measure. It was not a very good weekend for Universal Pictures and, more specifically, Blumhouse Productions. The house that Jason Blum built released the once-much-anticipated sequel "M3GAN 2.0" over the weekend and, even though the original was an unexpected breakout hit in 2023, its follow-up came in well below expectations. So much so that we must now question what future (if any) awaits this once-promising franchise and, more broadly, what is going on at Blumhouse.

Director Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN 2.0" opened to just $10.2 million domestically. It certainly didn't help that Brad Pitt's "F1" opened to nearly $60 million and served up a major crowd-pleaser. International audiences weren't all that much help either, with the killer robot sequel pulling in $6.8 million overseas for a $17 million global start. When we consider that the first "M3GAN" opened to $30 million in North America alone, that number looks awfully rough.

"M3GAN" is a film about the nuances and pitfalls of parenting, wherein a technology guru, Gemma (Allison Williams), creates an artificially intelligent doll, M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis), to essentially take over parenting duties of her orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). In true Hal 9000 meets Chucky fashion, it doesn't go well, as M3GAN becomes self-aware and goes to murderous lengths to try and complete her objective. This month's sequel, "M3GAN 2.0" (read our review here), sees the titular robot begin to grow and evolve past her initial programming, an evolution that's a metaphor for any developing child as well as one that's in tandem with M3GAN's "sister," Cady. Like any young person, Cady is hungry for role models beyond her own family unit, and given her developmental history, it wouldn't be a surprise if she chose one that was a little ... strange.

M3GAN: 2.0 is the latest horror movie from Blumhouse, but getting more sequels depends on one major (but expected) condition. The original M3GAN revolves around an AI companion robot, designed by Gemma (Allison Williams) to protect her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), who famously goes on a murderous tear. The sequel premiered on June 27, 2025, and has audiences divided, earning a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 sees Gemma bringing M3GAN back to defeat a military android, Amelia, played by Ivanna Sakhno.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer James Wan teased what would need to happen for more M3GAN movies. As Wan explained, should M3GAN 2.0 perform "well enough," more sequels could eventually be made. Read his comments below:

M3GAN 2.0expands the world of the dangerous android that took over the box office some time ago. Costume designer Jeriana San Juan found herself having to create contrasting looks: M3GAN’s preppy and ferocious aesthetic, and a femme fatale look for Amelia.

San Juan says, “Amelia has to operate with a soldier sensibility like a civilian soldier, and there are opportunities where her objective is to seduce and disarm through seduction. That’s where this idea of a glam Farrah Fawcett image came from. It’s what inspires her look.” She added, “I wanted to embed her color story into tactical colors that are between the lines of neutrals so that she can move about the world a little bit more unnoticed.”

The marketing and much of the story would lead the audience to believe that the villain is Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the new, advanced military-grade weapon created from code that Kurt (Stephane Garneau-Monten) from the original "M3GAN" illegally sold to defense contractors before M3GAN killed him in an elevator. Indeed, the first "M3GAN" movie was undoubtedly a tale about the hazards of allowing AI to go unchecked and the inherent danger of allowing technology to replace human connection.

When marketing for the film amped up, though, it was clear that M3GAN 2.0 wasn't going to be your ordinary follow-up. Instead, it appeared as if the film was taking a sharp turn into full-on sci-fi territory, abandoning its horror elements in favor of something a little more high-tech.
