The Life of Chuck, the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also working on series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) reached theatres at the start of June (you can read our 7/10 review Here). The sequel to the killer doll phenomenon, M3GAN 2.0, arrives with a bold proposal that redefines expectations. From its opening minutes, the film makes its new purpose clear: M3GAN has not returned to instill fear, but to entertain. This follow-up consciously moves away from the suburban terror that characterized its predecessor to embrace what its director, Gerard Johnstone, has described as an “action-comedy with horror DNA.” This shift, which could be divisive for the more purist fans of the first film, reveals itself as a deliberate and, for the most part, successful creative decision. It’s a good movie, perhaps even better than the first, that knows how to pivot from its premise to offer a very different but highly appreciable experience. The doll that became a pop culture icon is no longer just a monster in the closet, but the star of a larger, more self-aware spectacle, orchestrated by...

The first M3GAN, which introduced audiences to their favorite modern-day killer robot, is a full horror movie. This second film made some big changes, going from scary to full sci-fi action. If M3GAN 3 were to happen, the star behind the robotic doll would want to see it become a robot rom-com.
M3GAN 2.0 surprised many with its genre switch, as it introduced Ivanna Sakhno's villainous Amelia, intent on destroying the world. Thankfully, Megan was talked into becoming a hero by Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw), and she sacrificed herself to save the day.
The Direct's Russ Milheim spoke with M3GAN 2.0 star Jenna Davis, who provides the voice of the titular robot. She offered her thoughts on the perfect genre change for a third movie in the franchise.

When the sci-fi horror film M3GAN reached theatres in January of 2023, it was such a financial success, everyone at Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Atomic Monster seemed to believe they had just created an incredibly popular new genre icon. But the sci-fi action comedy sequel M3GAN 2.0 has turned out to be a box office disappointment. Made on a budget somewhere between 15 and 25 million, it had a domestic opening weekend of $10 million (1/3 of the first movie’s $30 million opening weekend) and, two weeks later, has only managed to cross the $36 million mark in worldwide totals. Things aren’t going the way anybody behind the film hoped they would during the theatrical run, but maybe M3GAN 2.0 will draw in more viewers on home video. You never know what's going to make waves on the internet, but "M3GAN" sure did. The trailer for Gerard Johnstone's killer AI flick blew up on account of the titular robot serving, slashing, and, most importantly, doing a weird little dance for everyone to meme into oblivion. Not only did "M3GAN" end up being a pretty fun horror comedy with a mean edge, it also gave Blumhouse a new figure they could potentially build a franchise around. "M3GAN 2.0" takes a page out of the "Terminator 2" handbook by flipping the script and making M3GAN an ally (of which she would be so proud) on the side of good.
M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis) may have been defeated by Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) after her protective programming went a little haywire, but the threat has only evolved. Made from the same plans as M3GAN, a...

There have been a ton of incredible horror films for genre fans to chew on this year. From original gems like Companion to blood-soaked franchise returns like Final Destination Bloodlines, there's much to scream about. However, not every sequel has been a success. The biggest example recently was M3GAN 2.0. The Blumhouse sci-fi action comedy that was light on horror has barely done what its critically-acclaimed original film did in its opening weekend back in 2023. Now the AI panic film is near the end of its theatrical run. With that has come its digital and physical media release dates.

M3GAN 2.0's digital release date has been revealed. The Blumhouse sequel continues the story of the titular AI robot introduced in the hit 2023 film M3GAN. It sees the return of several lead cast members, including Allison Williams, Jenna Davis, Amie Donald, and Violet McGraw, and adds cast members including Jemaine Clement and Ivanna Sakhno.
The sequel's box office vastly underperformed when compared to the original's totals. At the time of writing, M3GAN 2.0 has made just $36.4 million worldwide. This is only slightly more than M3GAN's domestic box office opening ($30.4 million), and far less than the first movie's $180 million worldwide gross.
As per Universal, the digital release date has been revealed for M3GAN 2.0. It willarrive on digital starting on Tuesday, July 15. This is not just any M3GAN 2.0, however, but an unrated cut of the film that features a version not seen in theaters and 30 minutes of exclusive bonus content.

M3GAN 2.0 is getting an unrated cut despite being a $20 million box office disappointment. The follow-up to Blumhouse's sci-fi action movie M3GAN takes place two years after the lifelike AI doll went on a murderous rampage and sees many of the original cast returning.

M3GAN 2.0 entered theaters with mixed results, receiving a mediocre score from critics, and is currently struggling to match the box office numbers of its predecessor. However, despite its underperformance, M3GAN 2.0 director Gerard Johnstone revealed that the home video release of this latest slasher-horror will contain an uncut version.
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Johnstone didn't specify when or how the uncut version would be released. However, he did share that it will contain extra scenes that were not featured in the theatrical cut and how some factors, such as trailer production and marketing, may have affected what comes to the big screen. Hopefully, this news of additional content could boost M3GAN 2.0's numbers in terms of home sales.

M3GAN 2.0 has disappointed fans and fizzled out at the box office. While the original feature created a social media frenzy unlike any other and made it one of the profitable horror flicks of the year, the sequel heavily underperformed in equal measure. The movie is produced by horror specialists Jason Blum and James Wan, both of whom were behind M3GAN, as was director Gerard Johnstone. In a new interview, Blum reflected on what went wrong with M3GAN 2.0.
“We all thought M3GAN was like Superman. We could do anything to her,” Blum said on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. The sequel introduces the idea of a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, which is designed to be the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Amelia, like its predecessor, goes rogue and Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal. Probably the concept did not sit well with fans,...

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of 2023, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. M3GAN 2.0 is now in theatres (you can read our review at This Link), and JoBlo’s own JimmyO had the chance to talk with cast member Ivanna Sakhno (Ahsoka), who has a major role in the film, about her approach to playing the character Amelia, a.k.a. Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android. Sakhno studied AI and worked with a movement coach to bring Amelia to life, and you can hear about the process in the video embedded above.

It was not a very good weekend for Universal Pictures and, more specifically, Blumhouse Productions. The house that Jason Blum built released the once-much-anticipated sequel "M3GAN 2.0" over the weekend and, even though the original was an unexpected breakout hit in 2023, its follow-up came in well below expectations. So much so that we must now question what future (if any) awaits this once-promising franchise and, more broadly, what is going on at Blumhouse.
Director Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN 2.0" opened to just $10.2 million domestically. It certainly didn't help that Brad Pitt's "F1" opened to nearly $60 million and served up a major crowd-pleaser. International audiences weren't all that much help either, with the killer robot sequel pulling in $6.8 million overseas for a $17 million global start. When we consider that the first "M3GAN" opened to $30 million in North America alone, that number looks awfully rough.

This article contains spoilers for "M3GAN 2.0."
Ever since 1968's "2001: A Space Odyssey," the concept of an artificial intelligence gaining sentience and immediately becoming murderous (or at least dangerous) to us puny humans has been a common trope in science fiction and horror stories. 2022's "M3GAN" seemed to be another example of the trope at first blush. After all, its basic premise concerns a toy doll who is outfitted with a state-of-the-art AI by tech guru Gemma (Allison Williams), only to gain sentience and attempt to execute its prime directive of protecting Gemma's orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). As snootily described by Gemma's ersatz boyfriend Christian (Aristotle Athari) in this month's sequel, "M3GAN 2.0," M3GAN is an example of the "paper clip" problem when it comes to AI. Essentially, if you tell an AI to completely focus on just making paper clips, then it will eventually see every other...

The global debut of M3GAN 2.0stumbles compared to the original sci-fi horror movie. The sequel, released on June 27, focuses on relaunching and upgrading M3GAN to combat a dangerous military android, known as Amelia. The cast includes Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jemaine Clement, Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, and Amie Donald and Jenna Davis, who portray M3GAN. While the original film became a surprise hit in 2023, early box office numbers signal that M3GAN 2.0 may have trouble reaching similar success.
According to Variety, M3GAN 2.0 was set to earn $10.2 million domestically in its opening weekend, failing to match the $30.4 million of M3GAN. Globally, the sequel isbringing in a total of $17 million, which is significantly lower than the $45 million M3GAN generated two years ago.

Brad Pitt’s F1 may feature much of the same talented team behind Top Gun: Maverick, but the racing film simply couldn’t recapture the big-screen magic created by Tom Cruise’s 2022 summer blockbuster. However, director Joseph Kosinski and Pitt’s sports drama did manage to run laps around its box office competition over the weekend en route to the No. 1 spot with an estimated $55.6 million domestically. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated sequel M3GAN 2.0 severely underperformed and nearly missed out on the checkered flag where the weekend’s Top 5 is concerned, as it downshifted and stalled at No. 4 with a mere $10.2 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Apple Original Films were undoubtedly hoping that utilizing much of the same talent from Top Gun: Maverick might lead to similar box office success for F1. M3GAN slays, but Allison Williams is mother. The “Girls” alum reprises her role as reluctant guardian and brilliant roboticist Gemma in “M3GAN 2.0,” also returning as a producer for the film from Blumhouse and Universal.
The sequel sees Gemma and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) team with M3GAN against a common enemy: an advanced military android named Amelia who threatens to destroy the world. While Gemma, who’s become a parenting guru as she advocates for limiting technology’s role in children’s lives, is initially hesitant to join forces with M3GAN, she eventually learns to embrace the bot’s special set of skills and finally connect with Cady in a meaningful way. "M3GAN" is a film about the nuances and pitfalls of parenting, wherein a technology guru, Gemma (Allison Williams), creates an artificially intelligent doll, M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis), to essentially take over parenting duties of her orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). In true Hal 9000 meets Chucky fashion, it doesn't go well, as M3GAN becomes self-aware and goes to murderous lengths to try and complete her objective. This month's sequel, "M3GAN 2.0" (read our review here), sees the titular robot begin to grow and evolve past her initial programming, an evolution that's a metaphor for any developing child as well as one that's in tandem with M3GAN's "sister," Cady. Like any young person, Cady is hungry for role models beyond her own family unit, and given her developmental history, it wouldn't be a surprise if she chose one that was a little ... strange.

M3GAN: 2.0 is the latest horror movie from Blumhouse, but getting more sequels depends on one major (but expected) condition. The original M3GAN revolves around an AI companion robot, designed by Gemma (Allison Williams) to protect her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), who famously goes on a murderous tear. The sequel premiered on June 27, 2025, and has audiences divided, earning a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 sees Gemma bringing M3GAN back to defeat a military android, Amelia, played by Ivanna Sakhno.

Farrah Fawcett and Judy Jetson served as inspirations for the new “M3GAN 2.0” looks.
The killer doll is back. This time with a new task: to take down a rogue robot named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), who threatens to destroy humanity.
Costume designer Jeriana San Juan found herself having to create contrasting looks: M3GAN’s preppy and ferocious aesthetic, and a femme fatale look for Amelia.
San Juan says, “Amelia has to operate with a soldier sensibility like a civilian soldier, and there are opportunities where her objective is to seduce and disarm through seduction. That’s where this idea of a glam Farrah Fawcett image came from. It’s what inspires her look.” She added, “I wanted to embed her color story into tactical colors that are between the lines of neutrals so that she can move about the world a little bit more unnoticed.”

M3GAN 2.0 has significantly underperformed during its opening weekend compared to the original smash hit. 2023's M3GAN followed roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) accidentally programming an AI doll, M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis) to violently defend her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw). The viral smash hit grossed $180 million against its reported $12 million budget.
The M3GAN 2.0 release kicked off two and a half years later. The new movie takes on more of a sci-fi-action bent, following M3GAN defending Gemma and Cady from an even more powerful robot named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno).
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, M3GAN 2.0 is projected to earn a 3-day opening weekend of $10.4 million at the domestic box office. This total falls considerably short of its original projections, which saw it earning $30 million or more.
It similarly falls short of the domestic opening weekend of the original M3GAN, which earned $30.4 million when it debuted in January 2023. However,...

M3GAN’s screen rivalry will wear a Scarface scowl and cartoon curves, director Gerard Johnstone says, recounting how the sequel’s new android foe Amelia started as a homage to Michelle Pfeiffer’s Elvira Hancock before drifting toward Jessica Rabbit once the wardrobe team “loosened the silhouette”; he felt Pfeiffer’s icy glamour gave the character the lethal allure he wanted.
Johnstone describes Amelia as a “dark mirror” whose design had to look “grungy and tactile” beside the pristine doll that danced into pop culture two years ago. Played by Ivanna Sakhno, the autonomous military engagement android flips the premise by forcing M3GAN into uneasy hero mode after defense contractors weaponize her stolen code.

Everyone’s favorite sassy android (don’t you dare call her a toy) rises from her graveyard of gears in M3GAN 2.0. Gerard Johnstone returns to the director’s chair, welding together an entertaining sequel that builds upon the spirit of the original while avoiding the Trojan horse sequel trappings programmed into so many of its peers.
M3GAN 2.0 picks up two years after the events of it’s previous incarnation. Roboticist and M3GAN creator Emma (Allison Williams) now travels the country, speaking out as an author and advocate against the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence (for obvious reasons). Despite claims of child endangerment and the other fallout from her creation’s murders, her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) remains under her parental control. Cady appears shaken but stronger for having endured the incident, taking self-defense courses and steeping herself in Steven Seagal flicks. While the original movie thrilled audiences and critics alike, M3GAN 2.0 has been deeply divisive on Rotten Tomatoes. The original, released in 2022, follows the story of an AI doll who becomes sentient and expresses a drive for violence. M3GAN was a resounding success, earning $182 million against a $12 million budget and quickly earning the right to a sequel.
The follow-up was released in theaters and sees M3GAN returning to life to combat another rogue AI. Allison Williams returns as Gemma, alongside Violet McGraw (Cady), Amie Donald and Jenna Davis (M3GAN), Ivanna Sakhno (Amelia), and more. With a budget of around $20 million, it faces high expectations of success given the original's box office performance.

Warning: This article contains massive spoilers for "M3GAN 2.0." Continue reading at your own risk.
Much like Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," the titular M3GAN of "M3GAN 2.0" (Amie Donald/Jenna Davis) is not the villain of the new sequel from Blumhouse and Universal. The marketing and much of the story would lead the audience to believe that the villain is Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the new, advanced military-grade weapon created from code that Kurt (Stephane Garneau-Monten) from the original "M3GAN" illegally sold to defense contractors before M3GAN killed him in an elevator. Indeed, the first "M3GAN" movie was undoubtedly a tale about the hazards of allowing AI to go unchecked and the inherent danger of allowing technology to replace human connection.

All Rights Reserved The first M3GAN movie, like so many other horror films from Blumhouse Productions, was made on a minuscule budget by today’s Hollywood standards — reportedly, just $12 million. When the movie became a huge hit and a sequel was greenlit by the studio, they were rewarded with a bigger budget, by some accounts, it was essentially doubled. And, according to star Allison Williams, M3GAN 2.0 made great use of that increased budget; she feels like everything about the new movie is bigger and better than the first. When it was announced that the 2022 Blumhouse hit M3GAN was getting a sequel, horror fans salivated at the thought of their favorite AI doll coming back for more over-the-top mayhem. Instead, it appeared as if the film was taking a sharp turn into full-on sci-fi territory, abandoning its horror elements in favor of something a little more high-tech. With the movie opening in theaters today, critics may not be in love with the sequel, but fans are blown away by what they've witnessed.
Hitting Rotten Tomatoes with a "rotten" rating of 58%, M3GAN 2.0's audience score has yet to be officially revealed, but the majority of reviews from fans have been overwhelmingly positive. "I walked into M3GAN [2.0] expecting something totally different, but I was completely blown away," said user Cyberr D,...
