‘Virgin River’ Gets Early Season 8 Renewal, Becomes Netflix’s Longest-Running Scripted Series

If You're Waiting For Gilmore Girls Season 9 To Finally Happen, Watch This Acclaimed Netflix Show That Just Got Renewed For Season 7
Image
While holding out hope for a ninth season of Gilmore Girls, Netflix has the perfect TV show that will fill the Stars Hollow-shaped hole in fans' hearts. Amy Sherman-Palladino's teen comedy-drama series ran for seven seasons on The WB and The CW (for its final season) before ending in 2007. Almost ten years later, though, Netflix revived Gilmore Girls for a four-episode miniseries — Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — which served as the show's unofficial eighth season. After it ended on a cliffhanger, many believe and hope season 9 is inevitable, but as of 2024, it hasn't happened (yet).

Amy Sherman-Palladino and almost the entire original cast of Gilmore Girls returned for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix in 2016.

The good news is that many more TV series similar to Gilmore Girls exist. The world might never run out of comedy-drama shows to watch, after all (with some...

Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, and Kandyse McClure star in the romantic drama based on the novels by Robyn Carr. Set in the small town of Virgin River, the drama series follows the town's residents with a focus on midwife and nurse practitioner Melinda Monroe (Breckenridge), who moved to the town after the death of her husband.

‘Virgin River’ Boss on Pulling Off the “Best Wedding Season in TV” and What’s Next
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from Virgin River season six.]

Did you hear wedding bells? Well, there were a few moments when it seemed like Mel and Jack maybe weren’t going to hear them in season six. Fortunately, the pair, played by Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, made it down the aisle in the end.

However, what’s wedding planning without at least a little bit of drama… or a lot, as seen in Virgin River? While Mel and Jack appeared to be the most stable in the sixth season of the hit Netflix series (now streaming), everyone around them didn’t slack at the drama. There was a love rectangle between Brady, Brie, Mike and Lark; Preacher’s trial; Mel’s father’s past with Vernon; Hope’s meddling and more.

Virgin River boss reveals shocking exit: 'He unfortunately won’t be coming back for season 7'
Image
Virgin River season 6 premiered on Dec. 19 on Netflix and delivered some of the most anticipated storylines of the series, including Mel and Jack's wedding. The new season also ended with a number of cliffhangers that will keep us guessing until season 7 arrives, but the show's boss isn't keeping us guessing on the fate of one character in particular's future in Virgin River.

In a post-mortem interview with Us Weekly, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that a character who made limited appearances in season 6 will not be back for Virgin River season 7. Mark Ghanimé won't return at all as Cameron in the next season. It seems we have said our farewells to Dr. Hayek, though there's always a chance that he could pop back up, just like another character in season 6.

Here's what Smith told Us Weekly about Cameron's future:

"I love that relationship, and, I think this season saw a...

‘Virgin River’ Season 5 Recap: What to Remember Before Season 6

Peaceful small town though it may seem from afar, “Virgin River” always packs in the drama. Each new episode brings emotional revelations and monumental moments for your favorite (or least favorite) residents and Season 5 was no different. So if you need a refresher, here’s a complete breakdown to recap “Virgin River” Season 5 in a hurry.

Netflix Doc and Hope Stayed Strong Through Health Struggles

Doc (Tim Matheson) and Hope (Annette O’Toole) spent much of the season navigating their relationship and careers through health challenges. Doc grappled with his deteriorating eyesight, which threatened to end his medical career — especially after Cameron (Mark Ghanime) clocked him struggling on the job. Hope continued to recover from her brain injury, and nearly lost her position as Mayor after Muriel (Teryl Rothery) brought a vote of no-confidence against her.

Virgin River Season 6 Trailer and Key Art Debut
Image
Netflix has released the official Virgin River Season 6 trailer and key art. All 10 episodes of the sixth season will be available on the streaming service on December 19, 2024.

Netflix announced in October that the popular series had been renewed for a seventh season consisting of 10 one-hour episodes.

Across its five seasons, the series has appeared in the Global Top 10 TV (English) list for 25 weeks since Netflix’s weekly Top 10 lists started in 2021. Most recently, the fifth season reached the top 10 in 77 countries.

Virgin River is a romance story centered around nurse practitioner Melinda Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) move to the remote California town of Virgin River. Virgin River‘s prodigal son is coming home. As revealed in the just-released trailer for Season 6, Ricky (played by Grayson Gurnsey) will return to the show for the first time since leaving town at the end of Season 4.

It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but Ricky is briefly spotted with his arm around ex-girlfriend Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) around the trailer’s 16-second mark. When Ricky left Virgin River for basic training, Lizzie was already in a relationship with Denny (Kai Bradbury), but we’re pretty sure that her pregnancy will be news to him.

‘Virgin River’ Season 6 Trailer Shows Groom And Mel & Jack’s Wedding Party – But What About The Bride?
Image
Netflix sure is milking Mel & Jack’s upcoming nuptials in its promo campaign for Season 6, set against the backdrop of the couple’s spring wedding season. After the first teaser, which largely recapped the duo’s love story over the first five seasons, ended with a glimpse at the bottom of Mel’s wedding dress, the full trailer released today features footage from the new season but even less of Mel’s gown, with an over-the-shoulder shot as the only peek.

The mystery carries over to the key art, also released today, which provides the best shot so far at the wedding dress, with the long veil, blown by the wind, strategically blocking full view. (See it below)

The trailer does give us a good look at a dapper-looking Jack in a tux — as well as video of Cowboy Jack riding a horse we didn’t know we needed. (Netflix...

The Virgin River season 6 release date is sooner than you might think on Netflix
Image
There's good news for fans of Virgin River as Netflix has just dropped a release date for season 6! And thankfully, it's coming our way much sooner than we thought, it's actually a bit surprising. But we're definitely not going to complain.

Virgin River season 6 premieres Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024 on Netflix. Better yet, instead of splitting it in half like other Netflix shows, all 10 episodes will drop at once for a nice holiday binge. How exciting is that!?

Since its debut in 2019 on Netflix, Virgin River has built up a loyal fanbase. The plotline is about Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckinridge), who, after the death of her husband, moves to the small town of Virgin River to become a nurse practitioner. She soon falls in love with local bartender Jack (Martin Henderson) as various other couples engage in personal problems.

‘Virgin River’ Season 6 To Premiere Earlier Than Expected, First-Look Images Released
Image
Just in time for Christmas — the sixth season of Virgin River is set to premiere Dec. 19. And it’s not one of those half-season drops that Netflix has been doing a lot of lately — all 10 episodes of Season 6 will be available that day.

That is slightly ahead of schedule — Netflix at the start of February unveiled its 2024 original slate, and Virgin River, along with a slew of other fan favorites, like Stranger Things, Ginny & Georgia and Wednesday, were not on the list, pointing to a 2025 return.

However, nothing is set in stone — Virgin River is the second series originally eyed for 2025 that will be back sooner than anticipated. The other is The Lincoln Lawyer, whose third season was delivered early and will debute Oct. 17.

Meanwhile, a series that was on Netflix’s 2024 release list, Season 2 of breakout hit The Night Agent, is yet to get a premiere date.

‘Virgin River’: First Look At Mel’s Parents Played By Jessica Rothe & Callum Kerr As Netflix Mulls Potential Prequel
Image
Exclusive: As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, which focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) nuptials, will also feature Mel’s late mother Sarah and biological father, Everett, in flashbacks. We can now reveal that Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast in the roles and offer first-look images of them as Sarah and Everett in Season 6.

The recurring characters are being introduced as Netflix is exploring an expansion of the Virgin River universe with a prequel following Sarah and Everett’s origin story.

Seen in flashbacks mostly set in or around 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is a witty, free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism, and trying to avoid the conventional/traditional life of a young woman in the ’70s. Always up for an adventure,...

Every Supernatural Actor In The Boys
Image
Iconic Supernatural actors in The Boys continue to thrill fans as the two ensembles come together in season 4. The connection between the two shows is strong with notable actors like Jensen Ackles, Nathan Mitchell, and Lesley Nicol crossing over. From Dean Winchester to Soldier Boy, these actors bring comic book characters to life while continuing to engage fans in The Boys.

The trend of Supernatural actors in The Boys will continue in season 4 with the connection between the two shows being further cemented. Before overseeing the wild superhero satire The Boys, Eric Kripke created Supernatural which starred Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester, a pair of monster-hunting brothers. After the show ended in 2020, Kripke moved on to adapting Grant Morrison's popular The Boys comic book series. However, he kept his Supernatural connections strong with a number of notable actors from the show joining The Boys.

Virgin River Behind the Scenes Photos Shot by Alexandra Breckenridge, Sarah Dugdale, and Kai Bradbury.
Image
If there’s one thing you can see in these behind-the-scenes photos from Virgin River, it’s that the cast of the series has absolutely no fun at work. Just kidding — big smiles and copious hugs are all over these shots, which were captured on the set of the final two episodes of Virgin River Season 5 by stars Alexandra Breckenridge, Sarah Dugdale, and Kai Bradbury.

Tudum gave the trio their own instant cameras as they filmed, and these photos are the result of their on-set adventures. Which, again, we’re sure were no fun at all.

Check out their grins as they goof around behind the scenes — you’ll see that the shots also include .

Much like their characters, the actors enjoy each other’s company off-screen as well. That intergenerational harmony is one of the reasons the show appeals to people of all ages. “You get to see a...

‘Virgin River’ Boss on Balancing Romance With “Twisty and High Stakes” and Season 6 Plans
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from season five, parts one and two, of Virgin River.]

Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith wanted the newly released holiday episodes of the Netflix series to feel lighter, given the weight of season five.

Following the part one release of 10 intense and emotional episodes (on Sept. 7) — which saw a wildfire hit Virgin River, an illegal drug business showdown, a sexual assault court trial and a difficult miscarriage — Smith knew he wanted the two holiday episodes that are now streaming to have a “feeling of family and warmth.”

Still, the beloved small town couldn’t escape at least some drama this holiday season, including Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) tracking down her biological father, who also lives in Virgin River. And of course, there’s no Virgin River seasonal event — this time, the Christmas tree decorating contest — without some challenges.

But as Smith looks ahead to the already renewed next season, he admits that his “intention was never to have...

‘Virgin River’ Showrunner Talks Christmas Special’s Biggest Twists, Teases New Time Jump, Doc’s Prognosis, More Mel & Jack And Wedding(s) In Season 6
Image
Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the Virgin River Christmas special

Netflix’s Virgin River closed out its fifth season with a two-episode Christmas special set during the holidays, more than three months after the “Labor Day” Season 5 Part 1 finale. As suggested by the aptly titled Episode 512, “Father Christmas,” the special’s main storyline follows the bombshell cliffhanger in the Part 1 finale, that Mel’s biological father is likely a man from Virgin River.

With only a couple of clues to his identity in the man’s love letters to Mel and Joey’s mom Sarah to go off of, Mel and Jack launched a search that eventually led them to Everett Reid, who lives in a cabin outside of Virgin River. At first, he wanted nothing to do with Mel but by the end of the two-hour special, in a true holiday spirit, he came around and,...

‘Virgin River’ S5 Episodes 5 & 6 Director On Courage & Heartache Under Fire, Fictional Natural Disaster’s Eerie Real-Life Parallels And More
Image
Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episodes 505 and 506 of Netflix’s Virgin River.

Virgin River‘s seasons are typically built around three tentpoles, the season premiere, the finale and a big event episode in the middle that propels the storytelling with plenty of aftermath to deal with in the remaining episodes. Big town events in the mid-run episodes have included the Moonlight Mingle dance in Season 1, the Lumberjack Games in Season 3 and the Renaissance Fair in Season 4. In Season 5, which marked the first for the hit Netflix series with new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith at the helm, a wildfire threatening the town of Virgin River. Because of the scope, it took two episodes — 5 and 6 — to deal with the natural disaster and its immediate aftermath.

During the episodes, still reeling from being ousted as the town’s mayor, Hope (Annette O’Toole) rises to the challenge and leads the evacuation efforts.

As she tries to overcome painful memories of the past, she must learn to adapt to the complicated situations in this town and everything this new place brings to her life.

Ginny & Georgia Scores Two-Season Renewal With Big Changes; Virgin River to Return for Season 6
Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry in Ginny & Georgia (2021)
On Wednesday, Netflix's first formal Upfronts presentation brought some exciting news for fans of the streaming service's most beloved shows.

Ginny & Georgia, which has been in limbo since January, has secured a pickup for two more seasons, keeping the show on the air through what will likely be the fourth -- and final -- season.

In an exclusive post-mortem interview in January, then-showrunner Debra J. Fisher teased that she and series creator Sarah Lampert had mapped out a four-season run for the show.

The renewal announcement's delay is shocking, especially considering the show has been a strong performer for Netflix.

However, the streaming service confirmed that Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: Next Class) will take over as showrunner from Fisher.

There is no reason for the switcheroo, but fans will be happy knowing the show is returning.

Ginny & Georgia Season 2 concluded with countless cliffhangers, including Georgia being arrested for murder.
