The casting of this iconic NCIS character nearly got the show canceled
Image
NCIS has been a ratings juggernaut for CBS. It's not only maintained its popularity for two decades, but it's managed to spawn multiple successful spinoffs. The cases are part of the show's appeal, but it's the acting, and the personality of the character that truly sets NCIS apart from its peers.

Producer Don Bellisario understood this simple fact, and staked the future of the show on it during the casting process. Bellisario felt that veteran character actor David McCallum was a perfect fit for the role of Donald "Ducky" Mallard, but CBS executives were not swayed. Not even a little.

CBS didn't want David McCallum to play Ducky “All or Nothing” – NCIS investigates the unexpected death of a Navy reservist who was an investigative journalist. Also, Knight and Jimmy’s budding romance is put on hold when a vital organ transfer goes fatally wrong, on the CBS original series NCIS,...

The Blockhouse
Image
For this perplexing British production Peter Sellers fronts a solid cast in a numbingly literal tale of seven men buried alive in a wartime warehouse of supplies and foodstuffs — and who are forced to stay there for years, praying for rescue. Stories of this kind usually come with a heavy moral or dramatic pyrotechnics, but after the opening barrage that drives the men underground, the balance of the film is a slow march toward the inevitable. The supply of candles lasts for an entire two years . . . and then runs out. Excellent extras cover the production in detail, and a 1945 documentary about the Channel Islands is an unexpected delight.
