8 Years Later, This Brutal Action Flick Is Still the Perfect Female John Wick Replacement Movie

Quick LinksJohn Wick Is Attempting a Woman-Led Replacement MovieAtomic Blonde Is Already the Perfect ReplacementAtomic Blonde Was an Abject SuccessBallerina Should Be Even More Successful

TheJohn Wick franchise has become one of Hollywood's biggest recent successes. Despite lacking an established intellectual property, the movies broke through in a space increasingly ruled by sequels and adaptations. With Keanu Reeves as the leading man, the movies feature action and a complicated political scene that only gets more complicated with every new release. The world has even begun to expand, thanks to the success of its recent spin-off, The Continental: From the World of John Wick. Having been released on Peacock and Prime Video, it showcased the Continental Hotel long before John Wick's retirement.

Though John Wick managed to set itself apart, there were places where it fell into the realm of traditional action. The gun-fu fighting style was new, but the hero himself was not.

Atomic Blonde 2 is caught up in rights issues
Image
Made on a budget of $30 million, the action thriller Atomic Blonde earned $100 million at the box office and was meant to launch a franchise, with screenwriter Kurt Johnstad saying he envisioned the story as a trilogy. But, seven years after Focus Features (a division of Universal Pictures) released the film, a sequel has still not made it into production – and during an interview with The Direct, director David Leitch revealed what the hold-up is: Atomic Blonde 2 has gotten caught up in rights issues.

Atomic Blonde was a passion project for star Charlize Theron, who produced the film through her company Denver and Delilah Productions. Denver and Delilah started developing Atomic Blonde 2 in 2018, and in 2020 Theron revealed that the sequel was set up at the Netflix streaming service. That was the last we heard of it… until this new update from Leitch.

Leitch told The Direct, “Everyone’s still trying to unravel rights issues,...

Atomic Blonde Is a Modern Action Classic with Charlize Theron's Own Stunts
Image
Following a relatively quiet 2024, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is poised to return to the big screen with four upcoming movie projects. Among them is Atomic Blonde 2, the action-packed sequel to the 2017 hit spy thriller Atomic Blonde currently being developed by Focus Features. In addition to reprising her role as the ice-cold MI6 Agent Lorraine Broughton, Theron will co-produce the picture through her Denver and Delilah production company.

Although Atomic Blonde was criticized for adding little to the Cold War espionage subgenre in terms of story, fans and critics agree that the movie's visceral fight scenes are among the movie's strong suits. Under former stunt performer turned director, David Leitch, Theron performed nearly 100% of her own harrowing stunt work in the film, including the jaw-dropping stairwell brawl that continues to be talked about seven years later. With Theron in the running as the most badass modern-day Hollywood action star, it's...

Atomic Blonde Ending Explained
Image
Charlize Theron stars in Atomic Blonde, directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and based on the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, and the Atomic Blonde ending explained how she double-crossed everyone. Theron stars as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent assigned to Berlin in November 1989, just as the Berlin Wall was about to fall. Her mission is to rendezvous with MI6's Berlin Station operative David Percival (James McAvoy) and recover the List, which contains all of MI6's deep cover operatives in both East and West Berlin.

Atomic Blonde showcases Theron's incredibly visceral prowess as an action hero and Leitch's inventive, bloody set pieces. However, the actual plot of Atomic Blonde may leave viewers confused between all the fight and chase sequences that increase in ferocity as the movie wears on. To help understand exactly what happened when Atomic Blonde ended, the movie left...

10 Movie Adaptations With Better Titles Than The Books They're Based On
Image
Movie titles need to be snappier than book titles to grab attention on marquees. Sometimes title changes clarify the movie's content, making them clearer and more concise. For example, Blade Runner is a more enticing title compared to the book's original title, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

From Die Hard to Goodfellas to Field of Dreams, movie adaptations of books often change their titles to something snappier and more memorable than that of the source material. Literary titles can be poetic and ambiguous to intrigue readers, but movie titles need to be quick and concise enough to grab peoples attention on a marquee. Not many viewers would plunk down a few bucks to watch a movie called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but a lot of people would be enticed by a movie called Blade Runner (if E.T. didnt exist).

Sometimes, the title is changed to clarify what the movie is about.

David Leitch's Best Movie Before Fall Guy Was This 2017 Spy Thriller
Image
The director of The Fall Guy, David Leitch, has received praise for the film; however, his best film is Atomic Blonde, a stylized spy film set in the Cold War. Atomic Blonde's gritty and realistic action scenes set it apart from other Cold War spy movies, focusing on brutality over glamor. Director David Leitch's approach demystifies the spy genre, showcasing the exhaustion and pain of espionage work.

Thanks to The Fall Guy's positive critical and audience reception, director David Leitch has enjoyed some newfound interest from audiences. Specifically, Leitch's history as a stunt performer-turned-director and his filmography of gritty action movies caught viewers' attention. This, naturally, led to moviegoers debating which of Leitch's action movies was the best. Many picked the first John Wick, which he co-directed, while others were torn between his solo-directed heavy hitters like Bullet Train or Deadpool 2. All these are great picks, but...

The Perfect Female John Wick Replacement Arrived 7 Years Ago & Was Wrongly Forgotten Despite $100M Success
Image
Before the female-led spinoff Ballerina, Atomic Blonde already served as the perfect response to the John Wick series nearly a decade ago. Both Atomic Blonde and John Wick share similar themes, styles, and action-packed scenes, making them ideal for a potential crossover. While Atomic Blonde 2 is currently in development limbo, the introduction of the Ballerina spinoff could pave the way for future crossover opportunities.

John Wick is preparing for its female spinoff, Ballerina, but the female response to Wick had already arrived seven years ago, though it was quickly forgotten. One of the most recent successes in the action genre is the John Wick saga. Created by Derek Kolstad, the saga began in 2014 with the movie simply titled John Wick, directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves. In it, Wick, a legendary hitman, comes out of retirement to seek revenge against those who killed his dog, a final...

The Old Guard Sequel Update Is Good News For A Forgotten Charlize Theron Action Movie
Image
The Old Guard's sequel is in post-production, proving success and potentially reviving a forgotten action movie led by Charlize Theron. The success of The Old Guard fast-tracked the sequel while Atomic Blonde 2 remains stuck, but hope remains for its release. Netflix's interest in well-built action movies with Charlize Theron could push Atomic Blonde 2 development after The Old Guard's success.

The sequel to Netflix’s The Old Guard got a surprising and exciting update, and it’s also good news for a forgotten but more successful action movie also led by Charlize Theron. In 2020, Charlize Theron continued to show her skills in the action genre with the superhero film The Old Guard. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard became one of Netflix’s most popular movies of 2020, as well as a critical success.

Charlize Theron Has No Idea When She’s Returning to the MCU: ‘I Haven’t Gotten a Call’
Charlize Theron
Don’t expect Charlize Theron to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. When asked if she knew when she was coming back to the franchise after her cameo at the end of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Theron was all shrugs.

“I haven’t gotten a call. Is that bad?” Theron told MTV reporter Josh Horowitz during the “Fast X” premiere in Rome. When pressed on the issue, the star assured Horowitz that she wasn’t lying three times then made a joke that he should cut her answer.

“No, that’s what we’re running,” Horowitz quipped back.

If you didn’t know that Theron was in the MCU, first of all, c’mon. She’s a huge name in Hollywood and a master of sci-fi action movies. Grass is green and of course Charlize Theron was going to appear in a Marvel movie. This...

Atomic Blonde 2 Is in Early Development at Netflix with Charlize Theron
David Leitch
Atomic Blonde 2 is officially in development, and Netflix is making it happen. There has been some talk of a sequel to the 2017 action flick, which was directed by David Leitch and stars Charlize Theron in the lead role. Now, that talk has turned into something more concrete, as the streaming service is in the early stages of putting the follow-up together.

According to a new report, Atomic Blonde 2 is in early development at Netflix. No screenwriter has been attached to the project yet, but Charlize Theron is set to produce and is expected to reprise her role as well. There is no word at this time if David Leitch would return to direct, but he has since gone on to direct massive blockbusters such as Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, so his dance card may be a little full. Beth Kono is also set to produce via Denver and Delilah Productions.

10 Best Non-Superhero Comic-Book Movies of the 2010s, From ‘Atomic Blonde’ to ‘Snowpiercer’ (Photos)
Cara Delevingne
Superhero movies, it has been (accurately) said, rule the box office. But although billions of dollars are made every year adapting comic books about costumed vigilantes, there is a whole universe of comic-book storytelling that frequently goes unexplored. Human dramas, light comedies, sci-fi and action comics alike, these works are frequently brought to the screen but sometimes overlooked by mainstream audiences who equate comics with the superhero genre. We were paying attention. These are the non-superhero comic book films that moved us and thrilled us this decade.

10. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (2017)

Audiences are bizarrely unkind to space operas that aren’t called “Star Wars,” which is a shame, because “Valerian” is one of the best in the genre. Based on the French comic book series “Valérian and Laureline,” which helped inspire “Star Wars” in the first place, “City of a Thousand Planets” begins with a phenomenal,...

‘Atomic Blonde’ Review
Review by Matthew Turner

Stars: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Roland Moller | Written by Kurt Johnstad | Based on “The Coldest City” by Antony Johnston & Sam Hart | Directed by David Leitch

An ice cool Charlize Theron kicks plenty of ass in this stylish Cold War action thriller from the co-director of John Wick, but the script leaves a lot to be desired.

Sporting a distractingly dodgy British accent and a Debbie Harry-style peroxide blonde hair-do, Theron plays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, who’s sent into Cold War Berlin to investigate the murder of a fellow agent (Sam Hargrave) and recover a missing list of undercover agents. Her contact in Berlin is shady MI6 station officer David Percival (James McAvoy), who seems to have gone a little too deep undercover as a contraband-toting wheeler-dealer and appears to have his own agenda.

Sure enough, Lorraine...

Atomic Blonde movie review: bland ambition
MaryAnn’s quick take… The living, breathing, bleeding life of the breathtaking fight scenes cannot overcome confusingly twisty spy intrigue and multiple male gazes on the story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; love spy stuff

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Berlin, 1989. The Wall is about to fall, but the Cold War isn’t over yet. MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron: The Fate of the Furious, Kubo and the Two Strings) is sent in to retrieve a missing list of all spies and operatives on all sides, if she can find it before the Soviets do. It’s an “atomic bomb of information,” not least because the list includes the identity of a double agent known as Satchel. Atomic Blonde — I guess because she’s so hot?...

Atomic Blonde review – Charlize Theron punches up hyperactively silly thriller
Theron brings a sense of style – and some serious martial arts chops – to this frenetic spy caper set at the end of the cold war

Atomic Blonde is an action spy thriller starring Charlize Theron as the neon-lit badass warrior, sashaying frostily through many a Berlin nightclub in revealing evening wear, where she might accept with a knowing half-smile a Stoli-on-the-rocks and some badinage at the bar from various admirers, male and female, before putting the smackdown on some brutish East German thug.

It is adapted by screenwriter Kurt Johnstad from the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, and like many movies derived from graphic novels, it tends towards the frenetically edited, hyperactively silly and Ritchie-esque, and this isn’t helped by the flashback structure. But Atomic Blonde also has some terrifically good one-on-one combat scenes – much more continuously and realistically shot than the rest...

'Atomic Blonde' Review: Charlize Theron Literally Kicks Ass in 1980s Spy Thriller
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Nobody does the spy thing better than Charlize Theron – and unlike 007, she does it in heels. Director David Leitch, a former stuntman who co-directed John Wick, makes sure his dynamite star stays untamed and is up for anything. Based on the graphic novel series The Coldest City by Antony Johnston, Sam Hart and Steven Perkins, Atomic Blonde is set in 1989, during the thawing of the Cold War and the last days of the Berlin Wall. This allows Leitch to combine brutal, no-holds-barred action with angsty shades of vintage spy-vs-spy espionage...

Glenn Hauman: Comics Adaptations Overload?
This past weekend, I was a guest at Shore Leave (had a blast) and as I’ve been doing for the last decade or so, I’ve been helping Robert Greenberger put together a bunch of trailers for upcoming movies, tv shows, and the like for what’s going to be coming out between now and February (which is when Farpoint takes place).

However, this week was the first time I could have filled the entire time allotted with nothing but previews from upcoming projects based on comics and graphic novels.

And this is less than two weeks before San Diego Comic-Con, where there will be lots of new stuff revealed for the first time – it’s a safe bet we’ll see sneak peeks from Avengers: Infinity War and Aquaman, maybe something from Runaways or New Mutants or Deadpool 2: Dead Harder, and that’s not even talking...

James McAvoy Feels Charlize Theron’s Wrath In New Atomic Blonde Clip
The Coldest City, Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s graphic novel about the dangerous world of espionage, has been simmering on the back-burner ever since Charlize Theron swooped in to acquire the screen rights a few years back. That’s hardly surprising, either, given the actress’ busy, busy schedule, but we’re now only a few weeks away from welcoming Johnston and Hart’s Cold War thriller onto the big screen in the form of Atomic Blonde.

Universal has been busy promoting the release off the back of extremely positive reviews coming out of SXSW, and their campaign continues apace today with an explosive new clip for David Leitch’s spy thriller, in which Theron’s best-in-class MI6 agent can be seen laying the smackdown on James McAvoy, who doesn’t stand a chance against the lethal blonde headed badass. We’re not sure what exactly it is that he wants from her,...

New Atomic Blonde Teaser Presents The Most Glorious Fight Sequence
We’ve already had a number of teasers and trailers for Atomic Blonde, and it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer. With Academy Award winner Charlize Theron in the lead role, the action-mystery-thriller adapts the 2012 graphic novel series The Coldest City (by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart), and sets the Mad Max: Fury Road star in an espionage-revenge narrative under the direction of John Wick’s David Leitch. The latest teaser, however, takes that anticipation to the next level.

It’s a glorious thing of beauty, this fight sequence, because it communicates to the audience both that the director is under no illusions about what he’s doing, and the star is having a whole lot of fun with it. We need no context for this teaser, because everything we need to know can be found within the subtext.

Charlize Theron Epically Kicks Ass in New Clip From Atomic Blonde
A new clip has been released for the upcoming action film Atomic Blonde and it features Charlize Theron completely destroying a bunch of thugs trying to kill her. She is a murdering machine! It's an incredibly fun clip and if you're into action films, there's no doubt you're gonna enjoy this. It's just a little taste of the crazy fight sequences that we'll see in the film. I've heard there's a jaw-dropping 10-minute long, real-time brawl to look forward to!

By the final stretch of this real-time brawl, Theron and her opponents are noticeably battered, panting, unsteady on their feet, and frequently backing away from each other to catch their breath and summon a second (and third and fourth and fifth) wind. It’s the alley fight from They Live, the street fight from that infamous Deadwood episode and any scene from The Raid were all combined into one of the most impressive action scenes…...

Atomic Blonde: Brutal Fight Scene Hits The Web — Eat Your Hearts Out, John Wick Fans
Amid the shiny, polished superhero movies we’re getting every few months in theaters, there seems to be a bit of a resurgence of edgier, more hard-hitting, mid-budget action fare. Between films like John Wick, Lucy, and The Accountant, it seems that audiences are growing hungrier for things that are different from the stuff we’ve been fed over the past several years. That’s nothing against the age of superheroes we’re living in (we Love our comic book movies), but it never hurts to change things up, and when all said and done, it’s nice to see other smaller, more original content find success.

Months ago, we got a chance to see the first trailer for such a project in Atomic Blonde. The film, which stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and Sofia Boutella, premiered at SXSW, and featured a kickass female spy. Helming the project is David Lietch,...

Charlize Theron is Atomic Blonde as second trailer lands online
Author: Zehra Phelan

Charlize Theron is proving to be a real force to be reckoned with in her combat skills, coming off the back of her appearance in Fast and Furious 8 where she plays villainous Cipher who will stop at absolutely nothing in her world domination, comes the second trailer for her John Wickesq outing, Atomic Blonde.

In the first trailer, we witnessed Theron kicking and punching her way through a horde of men before finding out she was, in fact, a secret agent tasked with a mission to stop her fellow agents from being picked off one by one with a less than gentlemanly James McAvoy in tow.

Atomic Blonde, which made its debut at SXSW Film Festival back in March, met with a mixed reaction from critics who described it as ‘technically dazzling’ yet has an ‘empty plot’, is being described as a sleek action with gritty sexuality.

Atomic Blonde Review [SXSW 2017]
Despite director David Leitch’s ties to Keanu Reeves, Atomic Blonde is no Lady John Wick. Cold War locales may radiate similar neon hues (Wick’s Russian bath house), but this espionage thrill-kicker is more about consequence then henchman disposal. Revenge is merely an underlying motivation, as government parties fight to keep a power struggle concrete while the Berlin wall crumbles down. Would a Wick/Blonde crossover be powerful enough to level cities? Undeniably. Let’s first appreciate what we have, though – Charlize Theron giving everyone in Atomic Blonde the fucking business.

Berlin, 1989. A German city loaded with secret government operatives, as East/West tensions reach their breaking point. Britain, France, America – everyone has agents in Germany, but a rumored list could out every name if it were to be exposed. This is why MI6 Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is sent to Germany, with a mission of retrieval. Her...

Nsfw Trailer For Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde
While John Wick co-director David Leitch (also the director of the upcoming Deadpool 2) may not have returned for the second chapter of Kenau Reeves’ continuing, head shot heavy adventures, he’s clearly not done with stone cold master assassins, taking the helm of the Charlize Theron starring Atomic Blonde. Based on Anthony Johnson and Sam Hart’s graphic novel The Coldest City, Theron takes the lead as Agent Lorraine Boughton, MI6’s most lethal assassin who is tasked by her superiors with delivering a priceless dossier out of Berlin. The first red band trailer has come our way, giving us a taste of what to expect. The tone of this movie is hard to ferret out, since this really is a trailer of two halves with the dark and gritty first half soon giving way to a much more playful, funny tone in the second (set to the incredibly...

When it suddenly calms down, lulling you into a false sense of security, we find out Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is actually a super skilled secret agent of some kind who is sent out into the field to stop any...
