Three Thousand Years of Longing review: Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton lack chemistry in creaky sci-fi slog
Image
Dir: George Miller. Starring: Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton, Alyla Browne, Aamito Lagum, Burcu Gölgedar, Matteo Bocelli, Kaan Guldur, Jack Braddy. 15, 108 minutes.

When Mad Max: Fury Road was released in 2015, it wasn’t merely a revelation – it was a revolution. In an era rife with mind-numbing franchise work, George Miller delivered a feature-length, dystopian car chase that slammed its foot on the pedal and never relented, all while unspooling a rich fable about women’s emancipation from under the boot of environmental collapse. The film found itself at the centre of many a fevered discussion about what cinema can look like at its most creatively liberated and immersive. Though Miller’s follow-up, Three Thousand Years of Longing, is an entirely different breed of film – a romantic fantasy about a djinn and the woman he’s magically bound to – its interest in the restorative power of storytelling follows in the same tradition.

Game of Thrones (2011)
These 2 Young Versions of Aquaman Are Spitting Images of Jason Momoa
Game of Thrones (2011)
If you've been waiting for Game of Thrones hottie Khal Drogo to get his own movie, then you're in luck. The gorgeous Jason Momoa will be starring as Atlantean hero Arthur Curry in the upcoming Aquaman movie, set to premiere at the end of this year. Better yet, the film will be an origin movie, showing young Arthur as a nine-year-old (to be played by Kaan Guldur) and a 13-year-old (to be played by Otis Dhanji). Not only were these mini Momoas perfectly cast, the two young Australian actors are already seasoned performers themselves.

Guldur (above) just finished filming Fighting Season, a six-part Australian drama mini-series in which Guldur stars as Callum Collins. Guldur also lent his voice to The Lego Ninjago Movie and appeared in a short film called Red Ink. Aquaman will be Guldur's first foray into DC's live action universe, as well as his first major live-action film.

Aquaman Makes A Big Splash With Epic First Poster
In what is shaping up to be a busy, busy week for Aquaman – and the overall Dceu, it seems – Warner Bros. has premiered a suitably epic poster for James Wan’s maritime adventure.

Arriving on the eve of San Diego Comic-Con, this crowded one-sheet is perhaps the perfect primer for Aquaman‘s maiden trailer, which is expected to hit the interwebs later this week – Saturday, to be precise, when Warner Bros. plans to occupy Hall H and shed light on both Aquaman and its cinematic next of kin, Shazam!

The former is shaping up to be an underwater epic the likes of which we’ve never seen before – part Star Wars, part Avatar, Aquaman‘s visual effects appear to be worth the price of admission alone. But at the heart of James Wan’s DC spinoff is a family epic involving Arthur Curry, Mera (Amber Heard), Orm (Patrick Wilson) and...

Aquaman Movie Reshoots Add a New Character to the Mix
James Wan
We haven't heard much about Aquaman lately, except for a false rumor in February that claimed the first trailer would debut during WonderCon. But now we finally have a new update. Director James Wan announced the cast addition of Randall Park in the Dceu superhero adventure as Dr. Stephen Shin. The director said he is, "so happy and fortunate to finally be working with this man" on "pickups" for Aquaman, while revealing this new character addition with the #DrShin hashtag. The director also shared a photo offering our first look at Park on the set.

Dr. Stephen Shin was created by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, making his debut in Aquaman Vol. 7 #2 in December 2011. Shin was a marine biologist by trade who befriended Arthur Curry's human father Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison), after Tom discovered his son's incredible abilities. While Shin would help young Arthur Curry develop his powers as Aquaman,...

Aquaman Casts Another Young Actor, All But Confirms Flashback Scenes
With San Diego Comic-Con looming large on the horizon – July 14th is the date for your diaries – comic book fans are currently gearing up for the annual deluge of tantalizing news and megaton announcements. Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok, and the newly-titled Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are expected to be in attendance next month, while there’s also the small matter of James Wan’s standalone Aquaman movie.

Currently lensing Down Under in anticipation of its launch in December 2018, there’s a crackle of excitement swirling around Wan’s spinoff, which can largely be attributed to the A-list talent on board – both behind the lens, and in front. Of course, Jason Momoa’s King of the Seven will be the one to anchor the story, and if a report from The Aquaman Shrine is to be believed, it would seem Will Beall’s original screenplay has made room for numerous flashback scenes involving the young Arthur Curry and the history of Atlanta.

Otis Dhanji has already been cast as the 13-year-old Arthur, but we now have word that Kaan Guldur (Red Ink, The Lego Ninjago Movie) has climbed aboard to play Arthur Curry at the age of nine. More than anything else, Guldur’s purported casting is further evidence that Warner’s Aquaman film will mine inspiration from Geoff Johns New 52 comic book run, and we’re fascinated to see how the final product pans out. Wonder Woman is living proof that the DC Extended Universe isn’t doomed after all, so here’s hoping that momentum carries over to both Justice League and Aquaman in due time.

Meanwhile, here’s that report of Kaan Guldur’s casting, via Twitter:

Jason Momoa & Otis Dhanji to be joined by Kaan Guldur playing younger 9 year-old Arthur Curry in Aquaman! pic.twitter.com/caQhmg3U1S

— The Aquaman Shrine (@AquamanShrine) June 21, 2017

It is, in the words of James Wan, a classic swashbuckling adventure, and though Aquaman was originally scheduled for launch in July of 2018, the Jason Momoa-fronted solo movie will now bow on December 21st, 2018.
