Fernando Babuy de la Torre’s Peru-Colombia-France family drama Diogenes took the Cine+ Club Award for films in post-production as the hybrid 2021 Ventana Sur came to a close in Buenos Aires.

The award was one of many in a huge awards roster announced on Friday (December 3) that marked the end of the market’s 13th edition and included the Cine + Club Award in Copia Final for Mariano Biasin’s Sublime from Argentina, which like Diogenes means the French distributor that acquires the film...

Lucy Animation Studio Brings the Magic of ‘Halloween’ to Colombia
Image
Lucy Animation Studio’s Colombian cartoon “Halloween” was one of two feature films, alongside Star Toons Animation’s “Chaskis – Mensajeros del sol,” honored with the MIFA/Annecy Award from this year’s Ventana Sur Animation! sidebar. Teams representing the two films will receive full accreditation to Annecy 2022 and its MIFA marketplace, where they will pitch as part of the event’s Animation! Focus.

Organized with the Annecy Festival’s MIFA market, Animation! took on a hybrid format this year, with some delegates traveling to Buenos Aires and others accessing full project details online for all Ventana Sur accredited participants.

“Halloween” was created by Silvia Prietov, a Vancouver Film School alumnus, Cartoon Network Girl Power 2020 best pitch winner and talent to track. They will be joined by the the latest animation titles in development at burgeoning production houses and animation studios around Latin America such as Chile’s Lunes Creative Studio, Mexico’s Panamericana Pictures (“Wild City”) and Argentina’s Malabar (“Sur Marina”) in an event now firmly established as one of the key showcases at Ventana Sur, the biggest film and TV market in Latin America.

Other buzz titles take in Mexico’s “Hanta,” with large fest potential and stunning visuals, and the older audience targeting “The Sleeping Beauty Chronicles,” also from Mexico, a darker fairy tale, even by fairy tale standards.

There are no strong trends at this year’s showcase, given an...

Martín Rejtman To Direct ‘The Practice’ – Five Countries To Produce
Cannes — Argentina’s La Unión de los Ríos, Portugal’s Rosa Films –a co-producer on Albert Serra’s Un Certain Regard entry “Liberté”– Chile’s Forastero, Netherlands’ The Film Kitchen, Germany’s Pandora Films and Mexico’s Interior Xiii have teamed to co-produce “The Practice” from Argentine director-screenwriter and writer Martín Rejtman.

A pedigree multi-lateral international co-production is often these says a sign of prominent big art film – think Lucrecia Martel’s “Zama” – on which producers will seek to finance via partners’ equity finance rather than pre-sales.

The five-country co-production agreement was signed Monday in Cannes. A naturalistic comedy about the drama of approaching middle age, “The Practice” follows Gustavo, an Argentine yoga instructor living in Chile who recently lost his wife and home while an injury prevents him from continuing with his yoga practice.

“It’s a comedy about the yoga world. It’s been over 20 years since I...
