Donald Trump and Republicans are nervous about the 2026 midterms. The president’s polling numbers are very bad (despite what he claims), and it doesn’t seem like Americans are thrilled with his lackeys in Congress who have supported the administration’s assault on Medicaid and other social services, his hardline immigration crackdown, or his chaotic approach to the economy. Democrats only need to flip a few seats to win back control of the House of Representatives, which would allow them to block Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations into his administration’s rank corruption.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to remove Democratic members of the state legislature from their offices and charge them with felonies after they fled the state. Two dozen Texas Democrats traveled to Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday to deny the Republican–controlled legislature the quorum it needs to pass an off-cycle redistricting measure aimed at securing Republicans additional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.
“The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance
when the House reconvenes at 3:00 Pm on Monday, August 4, 2025,” Abbott wrote in a letter issued on Sunday.

Democratic lawmakers in Texas are leaving the state in a last-ditch bid to prevent Republicans from further gerrymandering their congressional map at the request of President Donald Trump. If successful, the GOP’s redistricting effort could potentially give the party an additional five seats in the 2026 midterms.

Note: This story contains mild spoilers about “The Hunting Wives.”
“The Hunting Wives” has joined the elite club of buzzed-about Netflix series, wrapping a soap opera around a murder mystery faster than you can say “Who killed Laura Palmer?” Yet perhaps the show’s most intriguing wrinkle involves incorporating just enough political references to feel like a satire of Southern-fried hypocrisy.
In TV parlance, the underlying premise of the Netflix series — which centers on a liberal Bostonian who finds guns, drugs and lots of musically accompanied sex in a Texas town — owes a debt to “Twin Peaks,” the 1990 series that turned the Laura Palmer mystery into a national guessing game, while containing trace ingredients of “Dallas,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Big Little Lies,” “The Righteous Gemstones” and a whole lot in between.

Two migrants have been arrested for fatally colliding their jet ski with an 18-year-old kayaker who was a Texas Air Force recruit.
Following the incident on Grapevine Lake this Sunday, Grapevine police and the Texas Game Wardens confirmed the arrest of Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, one of the two migrants, on May 27. The arrest was in connection with the death of an Air Force Academy cadet, Ava Renee Moore.
According to an arrest affidavit, Gonzalez is charged with second-degree felony manslaughter, reckless operation, excessive speed, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. While a bond was not set, a bond of $500,000 was suggested in the affidavit. It is unclear if Gonzalez has an attorney to speak on her behalf yet.

Believe it or not, Jimmy Kimmel is worried about Robert Kennedy Jr.’s health. The ABC host expressed his concerns following the news that the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary plans to overhaul the department, a move that will eliminate an estimated 10,000 jobs.
“Why cut these employees? Just wait a few months for measles or bird flu to take them out,” Kimmel said on Thursday night. “Are we sure that worm in his head is dead? Maybe it laid eggs or something.”
This move would include cutting the jobs of employees who are currently helping health officials in Texas fight the ongoing measles outbreak. As of Tuesday, there were 327 cases in at least 15 counties for a disease that was declared to be eliminated in the United States in 2000.
“For a long time, Republicans have been arguing that the government can’t do anything right. Now they’re making absolutely sure of it,...

As Donald Trump prepares to enter the White House again in January, he’s currently figuring out who his second-term cabinet will include. And, looking at the list of possibilities on Sunday night, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver wasn’t impressed.
Referring to a chart drawn up by CNN, which showed at least three people in the running for multiple positions, Oliver opted to “state the obvious” before actually digging in on each of the possible contenders.
“That chart f–king sucks,” Oliver said. “It looks like a ‘choose your fighter’ screen where the only thing they’re fighting is the arc of the moral universe. It looks like an advent calendar where every circle opens up to a tiny piece of literal s–t. It looks like a game board for ‘Guess Who? Oops! All Assholes.’ There is a lot in there.”
The host then zeroed in on Elon Musk and Rfk Jr.

Each week, we handpick a selection of stories to give you a snapshot of trends, updates, business moves, and more from around the creator industry. This week, one of the biggest creators on the internet is reminiscing about the past, while another is looking forward to the future.
Creator commotion
PewDiePie gets banned by…himself? Felix Kjellberg earned a brief timeout on Twitch after broadcasting his old YouTube videos on loop. His decision to restream content 24/7 violated Twitch’s terms of service, even though he only played his own content. If he had replayed this old stream, his ban would’ve probably been longer than a few minutes.
MrBeast is preparing for his own death. The top creator on YouTube is building up a backlog of videos that can be released post-mortem in the event of his untimely demise. That may sound morbid, but he’s not the first creator to adopt this strategy.

The state of Texas is asking the Supreme Court to allow it to continue denying emergency medical care to pregnant women, pretty please. The request, which the justices will consider at conference on Monday, September 30, comes on the heels of a new report that shows the state’s maternal mortality rate has spiked dramatically since the state’s first ban on abortion went into effect in 2021.

Sally Duval, a Democrat running for the Texas state House of Representatives, released a pro-marijuana ad that shows her hitting a bong and smoking a joint.
Duval posted the ad on X saying it was “High time for a change” and residents of Texas deserve safe marijuana products.

In many ways, “Zurawski v Texas” is a film about America itself and the governmental failings that have brought us to this moment. In the two years since the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, women and pregnant people have struggled to receive proper reproductive care. This urgent and necessary documentary makes plain the obvious evil of an uncaring government that insists on gaining full control of the bodies of its people, unmoved by the pain that follows.
When Amanda Zurawski’s water broke after 18 weeks, she was denied an emergency abortion and went into septic shock, having to spend three days in the ICU. She had already picked out a name for her unborn daughter — Willow — but the child never made it. As a result of this terrifying ordeal, Zurawski’s tubes were damaged and had to be reconstructed. Unlikely to be able to carry another child,...

A year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a legion of state legislators across America moved quickly to restrict abortion access. Some targeted medication abortions and mandated counseling for those seeking the procedure. Others proposed outright bans and implemented “bounty hunter” laws, which widened the scope of implication from patient and provider to anyone who helps facilitate access to an abortion. According to a report from the Center for American Progress, 50 of the 563 anti-abortion provisions introduced in 2023 were signed into law that year. Reversing the landmark 1973 case didn’t just strip protections — it set the stage for this dismal state of affairs.

A federal judge has halted the Missouri attorney general’s investigation of the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America over its report last year that major sponsors’ advertisements were appearing next to extremist content on Elon Musk’s X.com.
As advertisers left the platform, Musk sued Media Matters, while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey served civil investigative demands on the watchdog group. Media Matters sued to block the investigation, citing the First Amendment.
In granting a preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta wrote that “Missouri’s interest in enforcing its consumer protection laws must give way when a state actor uses them to retaliate against a media organization for protected speech.” Bailey also sought a civil penalty against the group.
“The court does not discard lightly the presumption of regularity generally afforded to
prosecutorial decision-making,” the judge wrote, as he cited court precedents.

In February, Sen. Mitch McConnell‘s sister-in-law, Angela Chao, was found dead in her vehicle submerged in a pond in Texas.
The billionaire CEO of the Foremost Group, Angela was 50 years old at the time of her death. Authorities believed her death to be an accident at first but are now treating it as a criminal case.
Blanco County Sheriff’s Office wrote to Attorney General Ken Paxton, “Although the preliminary investigation indicated this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity.”
It took an hour for first responders to pull Chao’s body from the vehicle. Ems were unable to resuscitate Chao. The pond where the vehicle was submerged was located on a ranch in Johnson City, Texas. Chao’s husband, Jim Breyer, has ties to the corporation that owns the ranch.

Tucker Carlson is asking fans to fork over $72 for a charter one-year subscription to his new streaming video service — which his site says is “days away” from launching.
Carlson officially announced the direct-to-consumer service, at tuckercarlson.com, in a post Saturday on X (formerly Twitter). After he was fired in April 2023 from Fox News Channel, where he had been a fixture for more than a decade, Carlson has been producing a right-wing talk show distributed on Elon Musk’s X.
“Hey, it’s Tucker Carlson! We’ve been out of work for seven or eight months now. Hard to know, time flies when you’re unemployed,” Carlson says in a video clip promoting his new streaming site. “But actually, we’ve been working in secret and producing an awful lot of material for months now — interviews, et cetera — and all of it has now found its way to tuckercarlson.com.

The Texas Supreme Court has blocked a judge’s ruling that allowed a pregnant woman with a fatal fetal abnormality to have an abortion.
The decision has brought attention to the state’s medical exception to its controversial ban on abortions after six weeks, which is considered one of the strictest in the nation.
The lawsuit was filed by Kate Cox, a 31-year-old woman currently 20 weeks pregnant. Cox sought a temporary block on the state’s abortion ban, as she has been unable to undergo the procedure.
The lawsuit states Cox’s baby has been diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that is not expected to allow for more than a few days of survival outside the womb.
After the ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) warned Cox’s physician that she could potentially face civil and criminal penalties if she performed the court-ordered procedure.

A pregnant woman was temporarily blocked from obtaining an emergency abortion by the Texas Supreme Court in a ruling issued Friday evening, CNN reported.
The lower court’s decision was put on hold, and the Court said the case would remain pending. However, a timeline on when a full ruling would be issued was not given.
“Without regard to the merits, the Court administratively stays the district court’s December 7, 2023 order,” the order stated, per CNN. Texas attorney general Ken Paxton had previously requested the high court to reverse a...

Last week, Kate Cox, 20 weeks pregnant and a mother of two, received the worst news a person can get: her baby had a fatal condition known as Trisomy 18. The baby has no chance of survival, but under Texas law, there are only two options available to Cox: a vaginal delivery, or a C-section. Either option would risk her life or her ability to have children in the future.
Because of her two prior C-sections, Cox’s doctors advised her she is at a high risk for a uterine...

According to the one-star Yelp review, Jennifer was five weeks pregnant when she called White Rose Women’s Center in Dallas to schedule an abortion. Her first choice, Planned Parenthood, was booked out several weeks in advance, and she didn’t have much time. Texas had recently passed a law outlawing abortion at roughly six weeks gestation, which is around the time electrical activity in the area where the heart will eventually form can be picked up by an ultrasound.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) thinks his ruby-red home state of Texas is going blue.
Casar spoke about his 2022 campaign, which was featured in the new documentary Texas, U.S.A., with uInterview founder Erik Meers.
“It was a really fast and quick campaign,” Casar recalled. “I was committed to being an Austin city council member, had been working to make sure that people’s homes weren’t lost during the pandemic, make sure that people were able to survive that time of sickness and difficulty for so many people was working on that recovery.”
When the seat opened up in Congress, Casar decided that this “felt like the right moment” as he wanted to speak about “the really big issues facing people across the country, but especially in Texas where abortion was starting to become outlawed.”
During his campaign, abortion was outlawed in Texas right after the state had faced major natural disasters.

Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted on Saturday of corruption charges, following an articles of impeachment trial which included misconduct, bribery, and corruption allegations.
In May, his fellow party members voted to impeach him, concluding he may have committed numerous crimes and that he abused his position to help his friend and donor Nate Paul, an Austin real estate developer.
Following the 121-23 House vote in May, he was immediately suspended him from office as he awaited trial in the state Senate, where his wife, Angela Paxton, is a member.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, when ostensibly the U.S. puts aside its differences and unites to pay respect to military members who died while serving the country. This weekend, however, a segment of the right wing are freaking out about the impeachment of one of its own, who has demonstrably given enough pause in his alleged conduct that his fellow party members voted he be impeached. The Texas GOP-controlled House of Representatives voted to impeach state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Saturday. The Republican Ag was impeached on 20 articles including bribery,...

Ted Cruz just owned himself on tape. The Texas Senator backed Supreme Court challenges to election results, and in his own state, supported an effort from Attorney General Ken Paxton to have results overturned in four other states. On Jan. 6, Cruz voted against the certification of votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania, and continued to spread claims of fraud long after Biden was sworn into office.
Behind the scenes, however, Cruz was cautioning Trump allies that they would need “specific evidence” of fraud if they wanted to prevail in court. In...

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been targeting poll workers with accusations of election crimes and misconduct, according to an investigation released by ProPublica on Wednesday.
Paxton, who is currently running for reelection against Democrat Rochelle Garza, has been granted a broad mandate by GOP legislators in Texas to investigate allegations of electoral misconduct, and has fought for more unilateral authority in pursuing criminal charges.
According to the report, Paxton’s office opened at least 390 cases into allegations of electoral crimes between Jan. 2020 and Sept. 2022, securing only five convictions during that time period.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton used his wife as a getaway driver while fleeing his McKinney, Texas, home in an attempt to avoid being served a subpoena related to an abortion lawsuit.
In a sworn affidavit obtained by the Texas Tribune, process server Ernesto Martin Herrera testified that after arriving at Paxton’s home and seeing Paxton through the doorway, Martin Herrera was told by his wife, State Sen. Angela Paxton, that the attorney general “was on the phone” and to leave his card. He then went back to his car and waited.

American laws designed to prevent censorship on social media have suffered numerous defeats in court. On September 16, however, the most notable of those laws picked up an important win. A U.S. Circuit Court has ruled in favor of Hb 20, which aims to prevent platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook from taking any action that would “discriminate against expression.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott worked with the state’s Attorney General, Ken Paxton, to pass Hb 20 last year. The courts have played ping-pong with the edict’s legal status since then. Hb 20 was initially prevented from taking effect via an injunction, but a federal appeals court reversed that decision this past May. In response, a coalition representing several major tech companies rushed the law to the Supreme Court, where a 5-4 majority voted to reinstate the injunction.
Now, two judge on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals have declared that Hb 20 is “constitutionally allowed.

Photo: Queer Representation in Media Overview LGBTQ+ youth in the United States risk losing their right to comprehensive health care and education in the states of Florida and Texas. As of February 2022, the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill has passed Florida’s House of Representatives and now moves on to the State Senate. This legislation bans the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms of kindergarten through third-grade levels, “or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards”. Texas governor, Greg Abbott, in turn, has written a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, urging them to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation” of reported cases of minors receiving gender-affirming medical care. Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, issued an opinion on the matter stating that allowing minors to receive gender-affirming medical care is constituted as child abuse under state law.

L. remembers exactly what her son was wearing one winter evening nine years ago. She can still see every detail: the blue Angry Birds T-shirt, the black Bakugan hoodie unzipped down the front, the jeans that had once been bedazzled and that still faintly bore the heart-shaped pattern where the plastic jewels had been, the Dr. Who socks — one still on his foot, the other on his bedspread. And the belt. She remembers the belt most of all. It was white and bore images of M&m characters, green and red candies cavorting across its length.
