What’s Going on With the Gerrymandering Chaos in Texas?
Image
Donald Trump and Republicans are nervous about the 2026 midterms. The president’s polling numbers are very bad (despite what he claims), and it doesn’t seem like Americans are thrilled with his lackeys in Congress who have supported the administration’s assault on Medicaid and other social services, his hardline immigration crackdown, or his chaotic approach to the economy. Democrats only need to flip a few seats to win back control of the House of Representatives, which would allow them to block Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations into his administration’s rank corruption.

Greg Abbott Threatens to Expel, and Possibly Arrest, Dems Who Fled State
Image
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to remove Democratic members of the state legislature from their offices and charge them with felonies after they fled the state. Two dozen Texas Democrats traveled to Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday to deny the Republican–controlled legislature the quorum it needs to pass an off-cycle redistricting measure aimed at securing Republicans additional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance

when the House reconvenes at 3:00 Pm on Monday, August 4, 2025,” Abbott wrote in a letter issued on Sunday.

Texas Democrats Flee State to Block Trump and Republicans’ Gerrymandering Plan
Image
Democratic lawmakers in Texas are leaving the state in a last-ditch bid to prevent Republicans from further gerrymandering their congressional map at the request of President Donald Trump. If successful, the GOP’s redistricting effort could potentially give the party an additional five seats in the 2026 midterms.

Facing the possibility of arrest under the orders of Republican Governor Greg Abbott, as well as steep financial penalties for their absence, 30 Texas Democrats have fled the state to Chicago, Illinois. Their absconding will deny the state legislature the necessary quorum needed to maintain a legislative session,...

‘The Hunting Wives’ Uses Red-State Politics to Feel Smarter Than It Is | Analysis
Image
Note: This story contains mild spoilers about “The Hunting Wives.”

“The Hunting Wives” has joined the elite club of buzzed-about Netflix series, wrapping a soap opera around a murder mystery faster than you can say “Who killed Laura Palmer?” Yet perhaps the show’s most intriguing wrinkle involves incorporating just enough political references to feel like a satire of Southern-fried hypocrisy.

In TV parlance, the underlying premise of the Netflix series — which centers on a liberal Bostonian who finds guns, drugs and lots of musically accompanied sex in a Texas town — owes a debt to “Twin Peaks,” the 1990 series that turned the Laura Palmer mystery into a national guessing game, while containing trace ingredients of “Dallas,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Big Little Lies,” “The Righteous Gemstones” and a whole lot in between.

What sets the latest show apart are the throwaway references to conservative red-state politics. Those include, but aren’t limited to,...

How Texas Bullied Big Banks Into Dropping Their Climate Commitments
Image
Speaking to a private gathering of conservative operatives and fossil fuel advocates in January, a top deputy to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton gave “the inside story” about how his office bullied Wells Fargo, one of America’s biggest banks, into dropping out of a global initiative to reduce carbon emissions.

The official spoke in January at the exclusive Consumers’ Research Summit in Sea Island, Georgia. Rolling Stone has exclusively obtained audio and documents from the event.

Brent Webster, the First Assistant Attorney General of Texas, recalled how his office...

Image
Two migrants have been arrested for fatally colliding their jet ski with an 18-year-old kayaker who was a Texas Air Force recruit.

Following the incident on Grapevine Lake this Sunday, Grapevine police and the Texas Game Wardens confirmed the arrest of Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, one of the two migrants, on May 27. The arrest was in connection with the death of an Air Force Academy cadet, Ava Renee Moore.

According to an arrest affidavit, Gonzalez is charged with second-degree felony manslaughter, reckless operation, excessive speed, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. While a bond was not set, a bond of $500,000 was suggested in the affidavit. It is unclear if Gonzalez has an attorney to speak on her behalf yet.

Jimmy Kimmel Wonders If Rfk Jr.’s Brain Worm Is Dead After Cutting 10,000 Jobs | Video
Image
Believe it or not, Jimmy Kimmel is worried about Robert Kennedy Jr.’s health. The ABC host expressed his concerns following the news that the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary plans to overhaul the department, a move that will eliminate an estimated 10,000 jobs.

“Why cut these employees? Just wait a few months for measles or bird flu to take them out,” Kimmel said on Thursday night. “Are we sure that worm in his head is dead? Maybe it laid eggs or something.”

This move would include cutting the jobs of employees who are currently helping health officials in Texas fight the ongoing measles outbreak. As of Tuesday, there were 327 cases in at least 15 counties for a disease that was declared to be eliminated in the United States in 2000.

“For a long time, Republicans have been arguing that the government can’t do anything right. Now they’re making absolutely sure of it,...

Right-Wingers Are Fantasizing About Elon Musk Buying MSNBC
Image
In the two years since Elon Musk bought Twitter, he managed to kill its value, hemorrhage huge swaths of revenue, alienated its advertisers, and triggered a user exodus to alternative platforms. Today, users on X — the artist formerly known as Twitter — can expect to encounter a right-wing sinkhole of artificially boosted content, gratuitous AI slop, and something akin to the experience of a foie gras goose being force fed Musk’s cringiest memes at the top of their feeds.

Elon slapped a new name on his acquisition, delivered a sloppy product,...

John Oliver Mocks Long List of Possible Trump Appointments: ‘Like an Advent Calendar Where Every Circle’ Contains ‘Literal S–t’
Image
As Donald Trump prepares to enter the White House again in January, he’s currently figuring out who his second-term cabinet will include. And, looking at the list of possibilities on Sunday night, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver wasn’t impressed.

Referring to a chart drawn up by CNN, which showed at least three people in the running for multiple positions, Oliver opted to “state the obvious” before actually digging in on each of the possible contenders.

“That chart f–king sucks,” Oliver said. “It looks like a ‘choose your fighter’ screen where the only thing they’re fighting is the arc of the moral universe. It looks like an advent calendar where every circle opens up to a tiny piece of literal s–t. It looks like a game board for ‘Guess Who? Oops! All Assholes.’ There is a lot in there.”

The host then zeroed in on Elon Musk and Rfk Jr.

Each week, we handpick a selection of stories to give you a snapshot of trends, updates, business moves, and more from around the creator industry. This week, one of the biggest creators on the internet is reminiscing about the past, while another is looking forward to the future.

Creator commotion

PewDiePie gets banned by…himself? Felix Kjellberg earned a brief timeout on Twitch after broadcasting his old YouTube videos on loop. His decision to restream content 24/7 violated Twitch’s terms of service, even though he only played his own content. If he had replayed this old stream, his ban would’ve probably been longer than a few minutes.

MrBeast is preparing for his own death. The top creator on YouTube is building up a backlog of videos that can be released post-mortem in the event of his untimely demise. That may sound morbid, but he’s not the first creator to adopt this strategy.

As Death Rate Surges, Texas Asks Supreme Court to Let It Keep Denying Care to Pregnant Women
Image
The state of Texas is asking the Supreme Court to allow it to continue denying emergency medical care to pregnant women, pretty please. The request, which the justices will consider at conference on Monday, September 30, comes on the heels of a new report that shows the state’s maternal mortality rate has spiked dramatically since the state’s first ban on abortion went into effect in 2021.

Across the United States, maternal mortality rose 11 percent between 2019 to 2022; in Texas, over the same period, the maternal death rate surged 56 percent, according to...

Texas House Candidate Sally Duval Smokes A Bong In Campaign Ad, Calls For Pot Legalization
Image
Sally Duval, a Democrat running for the Texas state House of Representatives, released a pro-marijuana ad that shows her hitting a bong and smoking a joint.

Duval posted the ad on X saying it was “High time for a change” and residents of Texas deserve safe marijuana products.

The video begins with her smoking a blunt and, in the end, depicts her hitting a bong.

window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: 'thumbnails-mid', container: 'taboola-mid-article-thumbnails', placement: 'Mid Article Thumbnails', target_type: 'mix' });

While several states have legalized marijuana, it remains illegal in Texas at the state level. In her ad, Duval made sure to note this, along with the confusing aspects of Texas’ marijuana policy.

“While marijuana remains illegal for most Texans, hemp products that can get you high — like delta-8, delta-9 and THCa — are being sold at more than 7,000 retailers statewide,” she said.

In January, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton...

‘Zurawski v Texas’ Review: A Harrowing Documentary That Makes the Case for Reproductive Healthcare as a National Necessity
Image
In many ways, “Zurawski v Texas” is a film about America itself and the governmental failings that have brought us to this moment. In the two years since the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, women and pregnant people have struggled to receive proper reproductive care. This urgent and necessary documentary makes plain the obvious evil of an uncaring government that insists on gaining full control of the bodies of its people, unmoved by the pain that follows.

When Amanda Zurawski’s water broke after 18 weeks, she was denied an emergency abortion and went into septic shock, having to spend three days in the ICU. She had already picked out a name for her unborn daughter — Willow — but the child never made it. As a result of this terrifying ordeal, Zurawski’s tubes were damaged and had to be reconstructed. Unlikely to be able to carry another child,...

‘Zurawski v Texas’ Review: Galvanizing Hillary Clinton-Produced Doc Surveys the Harsh Reality of a Post-Roe World
Image
A year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a legion of state legislators across America moved quickly to restrict abortion access. Some targeted medication abortions and mandated counseling for those seeking the procedure. Others proposed outright bans and implemented “bounty hunter” laws, which widened the scope of implication from patient and provider to anyone who helps facilitate access to an abortion. According to a report from the Center for American Progress, 50 of the 563 anti-abortion provisions introduced in 2023 were signed into law that year. Reversing the landmark 1973 case didn’t just strip protections — it set the stage for this dismal state of affairs.

Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault’s clear-eyed documentary Zurawski v Texas anchors the dire reports of this post-Roe landscape in the experiences of real people. The film, which premiered at Telluride, follows Molly Duane, a senior attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, as she counsels...

If Roseanne Barr Could Turn Back Time She’d Tell Her Younger Self to Be ‘More Offensive’
Image
If there’s anyone in the world who could make good use of a time machine, it’s Roseanne Barr.

Were Doc Brown to pop by Roseanne’s house in his DeLorean, one would assume that the famed comedian might want to revisit the year 2018, when she posted a racist Tweet about former Obama administration staffer Valerie Jarrett that got her fired from her own TV show. Or at the very least, she could go back and stop herself from opening that failed vanity restaurant with Tom Arnold. Or, you know, marrying Tom Arnold.

The subject of temporal intervention came up in a recent interview with Barr. Closer Weekly asked the former sitcom star, “If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would you say?”

Instead of telling her past self to avoid writing that infamous social media post (presumably after explaining what “social media” is...

Judge Halts Missouri Ag’s Elon Musk-Triggered Investigation Of Media Matters
Image
A federal judge has halted the Missouri attorney general’s investigation of the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America over its report last year that major sponsors’ advertisements were appearing next to extremist content on Elon Musk’s X.com.

As advertisers left the platform, Musk sued Media Matters, while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey served civil investigative demands on the watchdog group. Media Matters sued to block the investigation, citing the First Amendment.

In granting a preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta wrote that “Missouri’s interest in enforcing its consumer protection laws must give way when a state actor uses them to retaliate against a media organization for protected speech.” Bailey also sought a civil penalty against the group.

“The court does not discard lightly the presumption of regularity generally afforded to

prosecutorial decision-making,” the judge wrote, as he cited court precedents.

Conservatives Are Already Working to Enact Their Project 2025 Agenda

With former President Donald Trump actively running away from Project 2025, the controversial policy and personnel program’s leaders have maintained they’ve already accomplished their goals — and will still provide Trump’s team with their lists of policy recommendations and potential second term hires.

But the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank that produced Project 2025, isn’t waiting around for a second Trump administration to begin implementing its agenda — it’s working to do so right now.

As journalist Chris Geidner reports, the Heritage Foundation filed a lawsuit last week...

Media Matters For America Undergoes Round Of Layoffs
Image
Media Matters for America, the progressive watchdog journalism organization, underwent a round of layoffs today, as its president cited the shifting media landscape as well as its defense against legal action.

A spokesperson said that more than a dozen staffers were impacted. Staffers turned to X/Twitter to post news of their layoffs.

Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, said in a statement, “We’re confronting a legal assault on multiple fronts and given how rapidly the media landscape is shifting, we need to be extremely intentional about how we allocate resources in order to stay effective. Nobody does what Media Matters does. So, we’re taking this action now to ensure that we are sustainable, sturdy and successful for whatever lies ahead.”

Elon Musk, the owner of X/Twitter, sued Media Matters last year, alleging that the organization “manipulated the algorithms” of the social media platform so that racist...

Pornhub Pulls Out of Texas as Age-Verification Law Leads Users to Seek Workarounds
Image
After a Texas law requiring visitors of Pornhub and other adult content websites to verify their age went into effect this week, the Canadian-owned website pulled out of the Lone Star State and users there are now apparently seeking workarounds in massive numbers.

Pornhub’s homepage now displays a lengthy message to those who log on in the state after Texas Hb 1181, introduced in the apparent interest of regulating the “publication or distribution of sexual material harmful to minors on an internet website,” as the law states, went into effect; the bill, which passed in June and took effect in September, makes it mandatory for pornographic websites to verify the age of consumers before allowing them to view sexually explicit content. Users must provide digital identification or use a commercial age-verification system.

A federal appeals court recently upheld the legislation, as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced last week before...

Death Of Mitch McConnell’s Billionaire Sister-In-Law, Angela Chao, Is Being Investigated As A Possible Crime
Image
In February, Sen. Mitch McConnell‘s sister-in-law, Angela Chao, was found dead in her vehicle submerged in a pond in Texas.

The billionaire CEO of the Foremost Group, Angela was 50 years old at the time of her death. Authorities believed her death to be an accident at first but are now treating it as a criminal case.

Blanco County Sheriff’s Office wrote to Attorney General Ken Paxton, “Although the preliminary investigation indicated this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity.”

It took an hour for first responders to pull Chao’s body from the vehicle. Ems were unable to resuscitate Chao. The pond where the vehicle was submerged was located on a ranch in Johnson City, Texas. Chao’s husband, Jim Breyer, has ties to the corporation that owns the ranch.

Texas Ag Accuses Biden of ‘Running Logistics’ for Drug Cartels

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused President Joe Biden of “running logistics for the cartels” in Mexico.

“The very first day Joe Biden came into office, he announced there would be no more deportations [of migrants]. Why would he announce that? He was sending a signal to the cartels to get these people here as fast as they can. He was running logistics for the cartels,” Paxton said Saturday while delivering remarks to the Davis County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day fundraising dinner in Utah, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Texas Abortion Case Exposes GOP’s Inability to Defend Their Own Laws
Image
When Kate Cox was forced to flee Texas after state authorities denied her pleas to terminate a potentially deadly pregnancy, it laid bare the true cost of state control over women’s reproductive health. It’s also made plain that Republicans — despite their claims to hold the moral high ground on abortion — cannot defend the policies they champion when they present real-world consequences.

Cox, whose 21-week-old fetus was diagnosed with a deadly genetic condition, had been in and out of emergency rooms as her already complicated pregnancy deteriorated her health...

The Texas Supreme Court ruled against Kate Cox, the pregnant mother who sought permission to obtain an emergency abortion, on Monday.

“These laws reflect the policy choice that the Legislature has made, and the courts must respect that choice,” the court’s seven-page ruling read. The court found that Cox’s doctor, Dr. Damla Karsan, had “asked a court to pre-authorize the abortion yet she could not, or at least did not, attest to the court that Ms. Cox’s condition poses the risks the exception requires.”

Texas Supreme Court Blocks Judge’s Order To Allow Abortion For Pregnant Woman With Fatal Fetal Abnormality
Image
The Texas Supreme Court has blocked a judge’s ruling that allowed a pregnant woman with a fatal fetal abnormality to have an abortion.

The decision has brought attention to the state’s medical exception to its controversial ban on abortions after six weeks, which is considered one of the strictest in the nation.

The lawsuit was filed by Kate Cox, a 31-year-old woman currently 20 weeks pregnant. Cox sought a temporary block on the state’s abortion ban, as she has been unable to undergo the procedure.

The lawsuit states Cox’s baby has been diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that is not expected to allow for more than a few days of survival outside the womb.

After the ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) warned Cox’s physician that she could potentially face civil and criminal penalties if she performed the court-ordered procedure.

Cox’s lawsuit is believed...

Texas had recently passed a law outlawing abortion at roughly six weeks gestation, which is around the time electrical activity in the area where the heart will eventually form can be picked up by an ultrasound.

Online, White Rose advertises itself as an “abortion counseling clinic,...

“It was a really fast and quick campaign,” Casar recalled. “I was committed to being an Austin city council member, had been working to make sure that people’s homes weren’t lost during the pandemic, make sure that people were able to survive that time of sickness and difficulty for so many people was working on that recovery.”

When the seat opened up in Congress, Casar decided that this “felt like the right moment” as he wanted to speak about “the really big issues facing people across the country, but especially in Texas where abortion was starting to become outlawed.”

Texas Ag Ken Paxton’s Impeachment Riles Trump and His Minions
Image
It’s Memorial Day weekend, when ostensibly the U.S. puts aside its differences and unites to pay respect to military members who died while serving the country. This weekend, however, a segment of the right wing are freaking out about the impeachment of one of its own, who has demonstrably given enough pause in his alleged conduct that his fellow party members voted he be impeached. Ted Cruz Pleaded With Fox to Show ‘Specific Evidence’ of Fraud
Image
Ted Cruz just owned himself on tape. The Texas Senator backed Supreme Court challenges to election results, and in his own state, supported an effort from Attorney General Ken Paxton to have results overturned in four other states. On Jan. 6, Cruz voted against the certification of votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania, and continued to spread claims of fraud long after Biden was sworn into office.

Behind the scenes, however, Cruz was cautioning Trump allies that they would need “specific evidence” of fraud if they wanted to prevail in court. In...

An anti-censorship law from Texas just got upheld. Will it head back to the Supreme Court?
Image
American laws designed to prevent censorship on social media have suffered numerous defeats in court. On September 16, however, the most notable of those laws picked up an important win. A U.S. Circuit Court has ruled in favor of Hb 20, which aims to prevent platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook from taking any action that would “discriminate against expression.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott worked with the state’s Attorney General, Ken Paxton, to pass Hb 20 last year. The courts have played ping-pong with the edict’s legal status since then. Hb 20 was initially prevented from taking effect via an injunction, but a federal appeals court reversed that decision this past May. In response, a coalition representing several major tech companies rushed the law to the Supreme Court, where a 5-4 majority voted to reinstate the injunction.

Now, two judge on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals have declared that Hb 20 is “constitutionally allowed.

The Debate Over Queer Representation in Media: The Horrifying ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill and the Impact of Media on Queer Communities
Image
Photo: Queer Representation in Media Overview LGBTQ+ youth in the United States risk losing their right to comprehensive health care and education in the states of Florida and Texas. As of February 2022, the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill has passed Florida’s House of Representatives and now moves on to the State Senate. This legislation bans the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms of kindergarten through third-grade levels, “or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards”. Texas governor, Greg Abbott, in turn, has written a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, urging them to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation” of reported cases of minors receiving gender-affirming medical care. Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, issued an opinion on the matter stating that allowing minors to receive gender-affirming medical care is constituted as child abuse under state law.

The Awful Cost of the GOP’s War on Trans Teens
Image
L. remembers exactly what her son was wearing one winter evening nine years ago. She can still see every detail: the blue Angry Birds T-shirt, the black Bakugan hoodie unzipped down the front, the jeans that had once been bedazzled and that still faintly bore the heart-shaped pattern where the plastic jewels had been, the Dr. Who socks — one still on his foot, the other on his bedspread. And the belt. She remembers the belt most of all. It was white and bore images of M&m characters, green and red candies cavorting across its length.
