Biography

    • April Johnson is a filmmaker and emerging producer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is of Métis/Nehiyaw (Muskoday First Nation) and European settler descent. She attended the University of Victoria and the Indigenous Digital Film Program (IDF) at Capilano University and has worked as a video-journalist at Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) as well as on numerous Indigenous film and television projects since completing her studies.

In 2017 April was one of four emerging producers selected for Canada's National Screen Institute (NSI) IndigiDoc course, a development program that provides mentorship and financial backing for Indigenous documentary filmmakers. With the support of the NSI, April produced Leo-nominated doc Cedar, Tree of Life, which was broadcast on the Documentary Channel as well as APTN.

In 2019, April completed the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) mentee program. The program fosters emerging producer mentorships and enabled April to work alongside the head of scripted development at Thunderbird Entertainment (TSX-V: TBRD). As of March 2022, April continues to work at Great Pacific Television (a Thunderbird Company) in scripted development and is an Associate Producer on Reginald the Vampire for Syfy/Hulu/Amazon.

In 2021, April produced and directed Stardust, a short documentary chronicling the creation of a memorial blanket for her mother following her brother's overdose. Stardust was screened at both the 2021 Gimli Film Festival as well as LA Skins Festival in Los Angeles.

In 2022, April developed a scripted dramedy with the support of the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO) with production commencing in summer 2022. Apart from film and TV producing, April is also interested in screenwriting, directing acting and photography.
