Elephants in the wild in The Last Animals
In an age when mammal species right across the Earth are in serious decline - humans being a noteable exception - larger creatures are being hit particularly hard. Documentarian Kate Brooks took up her camera to explore the danger facing elephants and rhinos - and to tell the story of the brave people who put their lives on the line to defend them. The Last Animals is a film destined to fascinate and delight audiences in equal measure. I asked Kate how it all began.
"In 2010 I was working with a medevac team in south Afghanistan and at the end of that I went on a pre-planned vacation in Kenya," she begins. Documentary festival announces winners.
Matthew Heineman’s City Of Ghosts has won the grand jury award at Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 9-14).
The award, supported by Screen International and Broadcast, comes with a cash prize of £2,000 ($2,800).
The film covers covert citizen journalist group Rbss (Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently), who are exposing the horrors of life under Isis rule via the media. Amazon have picked up worldwide rights to the film.
On behalf of the jury, Paul Mason said, “City of Ghosts is a passionate portrayal of people who took their lives in their hands to fight an evil that looms over the world. In our discussions we wanted the film makers to answer: who created Isis and who sustains it today? A compelling and vital film.”
The jury also included Andrea Arnold and Anand Pathwardan.

As chairman of British Film Company, Eisenbeiss was an executive producer on Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Dad’s Army, the Bafta-nominated documentary McCullin and Star Wars documentary Elstree 1976.
He was also an executive producer on upcoming projects including Saul Dibb’s First World War drama Journey’s End and Amma Asante’s Where Hands Touch, which are both in post-production, and Spitfire, a documentary about the famous British military aircraft currently in production.
Another project, Trautmann, about the famed German goalkeeper who played for Manchester City, is scheduled to commence shooting in June.
