Exclusive: Channel 4 is resting Sas: Who Dares Wins for the foreseeable future as it “shifts focus” to the celebrity version.
An extended eight-episode run of Celebrity Sas will start filming in the coming weeks but the original ‘civilian’ version, which most recently aired its eighth season, will likely not return to screens for some time, if at all.
A Channel 4 spokesman said the decision was being made “due to the huge success of Celebrity Sas” and insiders stressed the move isn’t being made for cost-cutting reasons.
“We have shifted our focus to prioritise this strand,” added the spokesman. “As a result, a longer run eight part series is due to commence filming in the summer whilst ‘Civilian’ Sas will be rested.”
The latest season of Minnow Films’ ‘civilian’ version finished in February and was watched by around 1.5M viewers per episode, while last year’s celebrity version secured approximately 2M for each instalment.

Never judge a book by its cover, they say, and perhaps the same is true for TV. The BBC’s new Sunday night thriller – Sas Rogue Heroes, based on the book by prolific popular historian Ben Macintyre – is saddled with a name so naff that it conjures images either of video game stealth missions or Ant Middleton dangling celebrities off cliffs by their toenails. In point of fact, Sas Rogue Heroes is something of a prestige drama – albeit one imbued with a streak of deep tackiness that befits its title.
It’s 1941, Egypt, and this is the story of three men: David Stirling (Sex Education’s Connor Swindells), a toff burdened with horrific levels of self-confidence, Jock Lewes (Game of Thrones’s Alfie Allen), a “mad martinet”, and Paddy Mayne (Starred Up’s Jack O’Connell), an Irishman with a reckless propensity for chaos. Together, they will found the Sas, via a series of alcohol-fuelled shenanigans.

Viewers of The Great British Bake Off have criticised the latest episode for its “offensive” depiction of Mexican food and culture.
The popular Channel 4 reality series branded its latest instalment “Mexican Week”, and saw contestants try their hand at making food inspired by Mexican cuisine.
Fans of the series condemned the stereotypical placement of sombreros and maracas in the episode, as well as a cake decorated with a moustache. The show’s presenters were also criticised for mispronouncing Spanish words, and for making “tacky” jokes.
In one clip, which was used in the social media promotion for the show, Lucas is seen using the typically Spanish name “Juan” to pun on “one”.
The episode also saw contestants make tacos, which some viewers described as “butchering” the famous Mexican dish – while others suggested the segment was a needless abandonment of the show’s baking-first premise.

Graham Norton has finally revealed the worst ever guest he had on The Graham Norton Show.
The talk show presenter, 59, was at an event in Dublin to promote his new book Forever Home, when he told the audience about one celebrity’s “chilling” behaviour.
The star in question was disgraced former Hollywood mogul and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein, who is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence.
Before dozens of women came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Weinstein in 2017, the producer appeared in an episode of The Graham Norton Show in 2015, with fellow guests David Tennant, Olivia Colman and Jessie J.
“I often talk around who my least favourite guest was, but someone reminded me, I have a really good answer to this now,” Norton said at the event, according to Joe. “It’s Harvey Weinstein. He’s in jail, so he gets the prize for the worst guest ever.

Former Sas: Who Dares Wins star Ant Middleton has claimed that celebrities are turning down the show now he’s no longer a part of it.
It was announced in March 2021 that Channel 4 had cut ties with the former soldier turned TV personality, who had featured on the show since 2015,
A spokesperson for the channel released a statement at the time which said: “Following a number of discussions Channel 4 and Minnow Films have had with him in relation to his personal conduct, it has become clear that our views and values are not aligned and we will not be working with him again.”
Despite this, Middleton claimed it was his decision to step away from the series in a post he shared on Twitter and Instagram on Monday (1 March).
Days after Channel 4’s announcement, four women accused Middleton of making “lewd and suggestive” comments to them while working as crew members on the show.

British broadcaster Channel 4 has said that it will no longer work with Ant Middleton, the star of its successful Sas: Who Dares Wins show, after his comments on the Black Lives Matter movement and the coronavirus pandemic.
Middleton has become a major television star in the UK after first appearing in military survival show Sas: Who Dares Wins in 2015. Since then, he has gone on to front solo projects for Channel 4, including Escape and Extreme Everest. He recently fronted Ant Middleton & Rebel Wilson: Straight Talking for Sky.
But Middleton raised eyebrows last year over comments he made about Black Lives Matter and Covid-19. In a now-deleted tweet posted last June, Middleton wrote: “BLM and Edl are not welcome on our streets, absolute scum. What a great example you are to your future generation. Bravo.”
Middleton later posted an apology video, in which he said he was not referring to the movement as “scum.
