‘After the Hunt’ is the latest Best Picture hopeful to open the New York Film Festival
Image
Luca Guadagnino is going to be on the road a lot in the coming months. One day after the Italian filmmaker's latest feature, After the Hunt, joined the Venice Film Festival lineup as an out of competition selection, the New York Film Festival announced that the Amazon MGM-released film will play as the opening night selection of its 63rd edition.

"We are excited to open this year’s festival with Luca Guadagnino’s latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today," NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. "Brilliantly acted and crafted, After the Hunt is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment."

In his own statement, Guadagnino called NYFF "an arbiter of global cinema," and provided a quick preview of the movie's themes.

Fred Hechinger and Sebiye Behtiyar Are a Vet and an Immigrant in Love in ‘Minding the Gap’ Director Bing Liu’s ‘Preparation for the Next Life’ — First Look
Image
Oscar-nominated “Minding the Gap” filmmaker Bing Liu takes his camera from Rockford, Illinois, to New York City with his narrative feature debut, “Preparation for the Next Life.” The Chinese-American doc-maker, who’s worked as a camera assistant on fiction series and films, also uncannily follows in the footsteps of “Nickel Boys” director RaMell Ross in parallel fashion: Liu is adapting a novel (here a 2014 book by Atticus Lish), making the transition from docs to narratives, and also for Plan B, Amazon/MGM Studios, and Orion Pictures

With a screenplay by Martyna Majok, the intimate immigrant romance follows an undocumented Uyghur woman (Sebiye Behtiyar) trying to eke out a life in New York City and escape the hardships she experienced in China. Working in the city’s kitchens, Aishe tries to understand the language and reckon with her Muslim family history, having been trained by her military father. She falls in love with Skinner,...

Inside the Outside: Notes on the “Subjective” Camera
Image
Lady in the Lake.It is not quite right to call a point-of-view shot “subjective.”1 As Jean Mitry observes, there is an essential tension in the spectator’s relationship to a filmic point of view: “At the movies I am both in this action and outside it, in this space and outside this space. Having the gift of ubiquity, I am everywhere and nowhere.”2 If subjectivity designates an individual’s embodied movement through the world—structured by goals, obstacles, detours, means—then point-of-view shots only highlight the disjunction between seeing through someone else’s eyes and walking in their shoes. Lady in the Lake (1947) was partly conceived with this equivalence in mind, advertised in trailers as a “revolutionary innovation in film technique,” starring Robert Montgomery and “You!” But if anything, this sustained experiment with a camera that purports to collapse viewer and character only accentuates the gap between a point...

RaMell Ross Wants $10 Million for Two Projects After ‘Nickel Boys’: ‘It Has to Be Philanthropic Because It’s Not Really a Return’
Image
After his Amazon MGM film “Nickel Boys” got a Best Picture nomination, writer/director RaMell Ross is eyeing his next projects — but understands that funding could prove a hurdle.

Ross told The Hollywood Reporter at Sunday’s Oscars that, after making his feature narrative debut with “Nickel Boys,” he knows that financing his indies would be a “philanthropic” venture due to a lack of guaranteed financial return.

“I think I’ve made enough films for people to say that I can make things relatively well,” Ross said. “So I’m asking someone to give me $10 million for two projects. Both of them, I think, have long cultural lives, but it has to be philanthropic because it’s not really a return. But I think they’re deep in meaning and can change a lot of people’s view on the world.”

He added of both potential projects, “They’re written out.

Deadpool & Wolverine Actor Confirms They Were The Dancing Deadpool Who Performed During Sunday's Oscars
Image
Deadpool & Wolverine opened with Wade Wilson pulling off some impressive dance moves to the tune of Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye." However, it wasn't Ryan Reynolds in the suit; instead, dancer Nick Pauley took on the role of the McU's "Dancepool."

During Sunday's 97th Academy Awards, host Conan O'Brien performed "I Won't Waste Time" and was accompanied on stage by Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's titular Merc with the Mouth.

The Marvel Studios movie didn't receive a single nomination - much to the chagrin of many comic book fans - but Deadpool's cameo felt like an acknowledgement of what a positive impact the threequel made to theaters in 2024.

Now, Pauley has taken to Instagram to confirm he once again donned the suit for the Oscars. He also credited Ryan Reynolds for advocating that he be the one who hit the stage as "Dancepool."

"Thank you [Ryan Reynolds]; who loved the...

One of the Best Nominees at the Oscars Received Only Two Nominations and Zero Wins — It Deserved So Much More
Image
Despite the sweep for Anora, most of this year's Best Picture nominees went home with awards. Golden Globe favorite The Brutalist went home with three, followed by Emelia Perez, Dune: Part II, and Wicked each garnering two, and lastly, I'm Still Here, Conclave, and The Substance all left with one award. The only snubs were the robustly nominated A Complete Unknown, and a smaller film that only scored one other nomination: Nickel Boys. The latter film, a debut narrative feature from documentarian RaMell Ross, came into award season with a high degree of pedigree. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys began amassing huge critical acclaim after premiering on the festival circuit, but sadly, this did not translate to the awards. While two Oscar nominations are nice, Nickel Boys deserved to win Oscars it wasn't even nominated for.

Inside the 97th Academy Awards and Why the Show Must Go On
Image
The Oscars, at its best, is a time-honored tradition that focuses on the magic of the movies and the movie industry. It basks us all in the warm golden glow of massive celebrity and wealth. The faces change (every Oscar host ever has a quip or three about this being due to plastic surgery), but the iconic archetypes they fill stay the same. Who is this year's ingénue, rising star, member of the old guard, decade-long celeb finally earning a nom, fresh-faced director, standby legendary filmmaker with countless wins to their name... the list of roles goes on.

It's like the water in a river; the ripples look consistent, but the water itself continues to pass through rapidly. Under the surface of it all, though, is this unique big business's dual identity as a modern art form. The Oscars always try to remind us that behind the pretty faces are...

Deadpool Makes A Surprise Appearance At The Oscars Despite Deadpool & Wolverine Not Being Nominated
Image
The Academy Awards took place yesterday evening and, as per usual, the results have split opinions. Anora was the surprise Best Picture winner, with Wicked and Conclave failing to keep the momentum going following other recent award ceremonies.

Conan O'Brien hosted this year's and his performance of "I Won't Waste Time" was accompanied by surprise appearances from Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's Dancepool.

We don't know who was in the suit, though the Merc with the Mouth - who O'Brien reminded us wasn't among the nominees - pulled off some familiar Backstreet Boys-inspired dance moves before making his exit.

Ryan Reynolds initially embarked on a pretty robust "FYC" campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine, though it quickly lost momentum. The movie, which was a box office hit, wasn't exactly considered a critical darling with 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

You may recall that were was some chatter about Reynolds...

Oscars 2025 | Sean Baker’s Anora the big success story
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Anora picks up five Oscars, in a surprisingly mixed Oscars 2025. Here’s the run down of what won and what didn’t.

Well, the Oscars has happened again, and perhaps now we can all get back to normal for a while.

This year’s statuette season was interesting enough given that there was no clear frontrunner like last year, when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dominated the awards race from start to finish. Still, set against the backdrop of the the hugely destructive Californian wildfires, it still all seemed a little superfluous at times. Meanwhile, The Brutalist director Brady Corbet provided an insight into the state of the non-blockbuster film business when he revealed that not being paid for being on a months-long awards trail meant he was living hand to mouth.

Still, fancy garments were donned and some statuettes were duly dished out and the 2025 Oscars.

Oscar Winners 2025: Mikey Madison, ‘Anora’ Take Home the Gold
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hollywood’s biggest night has come to an end, and as usual, the Academy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments.

But as much as we loved the James Bond tribute and the hilarious monologue from first-time host Conan O’Brien, the winners and their acceptance speeches were the focus of the night.

Several deserving stars took home their very first Oscars, including Mikey Madison, who headlined the biggest winner of the night, the audacious sex work dramedy Anora.

The indie flick took home five awards, and director Sean Baker took the stage for a number of gracious speeches. But he and Mikey weren’t the only victors at the 97th Oscars.

So without further ado, here’s your full list of the night...

2025 Oscars race scorecard: ‘Anora’ gets its fairy-tale ending at the Oscars
Image
The Oscar race is a marathon, not a sprint. There are dozens of pit stops along the way and trophies to be given out before the 2025 Oscars on March 2. Keep track of precursor wins here with our scorecard. This includes honors from major film festivals, critics groups, guilds, and televised shows of the 2024-25 Oscar season. Wins are listed in order of announcement and in accordance with candidates' FYC campaigns.

Updated: Sunday, March 2, 2025, with Oscar winners.

The Oscar season began and ended with Anora. Sean Baker's film moved to the front of the Oscar race after winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and while it didn't have the smoothest path, its Oscar journey ended with five trophies Sunday night, including Best Picture.

Anora also won Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing — the last three of which went to Baker.

Conclave Writer Peter Straughan Wins First Academy Award
Image
Conclave screenwriter Peter Straughan is now an Academy Award winner. The honor comes after Straughan picked up wins at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards.

At the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Straughan was announced as the winner for Best Adapted Screenplay. This is the second nomination for the writer, but the first time he has picked up the win. He was nominated for the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which managed to get him a win at the BAFTAs and other awards shows, but he came up short at the Oscars. The screenwriter is now getting his flowers, and it is clear from his Oscar win acceptance speech how proud he feels to have gotten the honor.

Oscars 2025: Complete Winners List (Updating Live)
Image
The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.

And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.

And what looked like an unobstructed path to best actress anointment for...

Anonymous Oscar Ballot 2025: Costume Designer Votes the ‘Emilia Pérez’ Ticket and Celebrates ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
With final Oscar balloting closed on February 18, we’re continuing with our eighth annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their unfiltered takes on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued in the 2025 award season. Voter’s picks in bold. Interview edited for brevity.

Best Picture

I voted for “Emelia Pérez,” the most interesting, innovative, creative picture of the year. I went to a screening early on, so I didn’t have expectations, except that I liked [Jacques Audiard’s] other films. I love the music. I’m sad about all the stuff about Karla Sofía [Gascón]. Am I not going to look at a Picasso painting ever again? He was a shit. Am I not going to watch a Woody Allen film? It’s a slippery slope when you start with the personality of the people in the movie. Who’s perfect? It has to be about...

Christmas, Every Day (Faye Tsakas)

Rising documentarian Faye Tsakas explores the world of preteen influencers in her newest short film. Shot in rural Alabama, her observational documentary shows how much work influencers Peyton and Leyla put into developing their social media presence from an early age. Their parents assist them throughout, hopeful their help will allow their children to develop passive incomes and avoid a life of boring desk-jobs. Tsakas’ compelling visuals of child starlets filming TikTok dances against bucolic backdrops populated with tractors and livestock reveals how pervasive social media has become in modern times.

2025 Oscar Nominees Class Photo: Ariana Grande, Timothée Chalamet and 170 Others Gather for a Night at the Museum
Image
Some 172 of this year’s Oscar nominees — among them Timothée Chalamet (best actor for A Complete Unknown), Demi Moore (best actress for The Substance), Denis Villeneuve (best picture for Dune: Part Two) and Brandi Carlile (best original song for “Never Too Late” from Elton John: Never Too Late), but not Kieran Culkin (best supporting actor for A Real Pain) or Karla Sofía Gascón (best actress for Emilia Pérez) — descended upon the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on Tuesday night for a night at the museum unlike any other.

The Academy decided to host the gathering, dubbed an “Oscar Nominees Dinner,” just five nights before the 97th Academy Awards, in place of its traditional Oscar Nominees Luncheon, which was canceled in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.

Upon arrival on Tuesday, nominees were ushered into a room just off of the museum’s...

We update our picks through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2025 Oscar predictions.

The State of the Race

With the equivalent of a Best Picture win at the BAFTA Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, in addition to the multiple Best Screenplay awards the film has received from awards bodies like the Golden Globes and USC Scripter Awards, “Conclave” and screenwriter Peter Straughan are most likely a lock to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And though this is not the first nomination for the “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” scribe, Straughan being the frontrunner does come as a bit of a surprise...

Zeinabu Irene Davis On The 25-Year Journey To Release ‘Compensation’ & How The LA Rebellion Lives On Through Filmmakers Like RaMell Ross
Image
Much of world cinema’s lost works have been victims of either technology with poor materials like nitrate film or the ignorance of a limited and often bigoted industry. Thankfully for film fans, it is becoming increasingly difficult for either to deal a death blow to a film’s trajectory.

Social and technological advancements also continue to aid our rediscovery of past great works like Zeinabu irene Davis’s debut feature Compensation, which embarked on its first wide release this past Friday just over 25 years since its festival debut.

Compensation screened at Sundance in 2000, receiving positive notices from critics like Roger Ebert and landed an Independent Spirit nod before falling into obscurity. The film had been something of a myth for film scholars and enthusiasts interested in the LA Rebellion, the late 60s and early 70s film movement at UCLA that spawned a collection of pioneering African and African-American filmmakers.

Guests at the 2025 Indie Spirit Awards Forecast a ‘Messy’ Future for Independent Film
Image
Arriving on a busy blue carpet for a gray day at the beach, guests at the 2025 Indie Spirit Awards agreed: It’s time to Make the Movies Messy Again.

Inside the ceremony tent, host Aidy Bryant put it perfectly when she said, “It’s been a great year for film and a bad year for human life.” Hundreds of the most important decision-makers and visionary artists championing creative independence today gathered in Santa Monica, California on Saturday to honor the best in boundary-breaking film and TV.

“Anora” and “Baby Reindeer” won the most categories in several tight races, but the show’s main source of dramatic tension came from the countless news items surrounding a tough awards season. From fraught talk of cultural fascism to economic critiques of the entertainment industry, honorees and their peers predicted an uncertain but fiery future for filmmakers, cast, and crew. The word “messy” came...

Oscars Best Adapted Screenplay breakdown: ‘Conclave’ is the heavy favorite after BAFTA, Critics Choice, USC Scripter wins
Image
Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

SEEHow Kieran Culkin could end this 12-year Oscar streak Frontrunner: Conclave, by Peter Straughan

Only one film in this category earned writing nominations from the BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, USC Scripter Awards, and Golden Globes, and Conclave is it. The screenplay also managed to win all of those awards, including the Golden Globe, which was a shared category with original screenplay contenders. That means Conclave not only...

Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot No. 1: ‘Conclave’ for Best Picture, ‘Emilia Pérez’ Star Lost His Vote with Tweets
Image
This “Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot,” the first in a series that THR will run ahead of Oscar night, reflects the votes — and candid rationales for them — of a male member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 202-person short films branch, as communicated to THR in return for anonymity. THR does not necessarily endorse these views or suggest that they are representative of anything other than this voter’s perspective.

Best picture

I liked Emilia Pérez when I watched it but, even before all the shit that happened [involving lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón], it wasn’t in my top 10. I’d have preferred to see its spot go to Sing Sing, which was underappreciated; or Juror #2, which I really liked; or The Wild Robot or No Other Land, but you know how most of the Academy treats animated and documentary films — no respect. I do like musicals, and Wicked was tight.

USC Scripter Awards: ‘Conclave,’ ‘Say Nothing’ Take Top Honors
Image
The writers behind the feature film Conclave and TV series Say Nothing took home top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which were handed out Saturday night.

The Scripter Awards honor the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors and the screenwriters share the award.

Conclave was adapted by Peter Straughan from the novel by Robert Harris.

Say Nothing was honored for the episode “The People in the Dirt,” written by Joshua Zetumer. The show is based on the nonfiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe.

The finalists and winners were determined by a jury chaired by USC professor and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vp Howard Rodman. The awards were presented at the 37th annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards ceremony, a black-tie affair held at the Town & Gown ballroom on the campus of USC.
