‘The Visitor’ Review: A Searching Lithuanian Character Study Caught Between the Peace of Solitude and the Pang of Loneliness

You can’t go home again, as Thomas Wolfe famously told us, and the drifting, dawdling protagonist of “The Visitor” knows it all too well. But he goes home anyway, and stays there, and stays there, long outstaying a welcome that nobody especially offered in the first place, quietly revelling in his own foiled nostalgia. Back in his adopted country, a young family awaits his return, not all that impatiently. Over a balmy, slowly dissipating summer, nothing really pushes or pulls our aimless hero in either direction, and in this state of happy stagnation, melancholy becomes a comfort blanket. Some viewers will relate to the personal limbo depicted in Lithuanian director Vytautas Katkus’ leisurely, unusual comedy; more may find it utterly confounding, but its breezy-sad charms should carry across that empathy gap.

An accomplished shorts director with Cannes and Venice competition entries under his belt, Katkus isn’t overly concerned...

"Shadow Island" is a new Swedish-produced mystery thriller, written and directed by Johan Storm, starring Hanne Mathisen Haga, Magnus Roosmann and Anderz Eide, available On Demand, September 8, 2023:

"...'David' an aspiring meteorologist, follows his late father's footsteps in the Swedish military. After stumbling upon what's left of his father's work, David sets off to a desert island in the Barents Sea - the one place which may hold the truth about his father's passing. 

"Confronted by strange lights in the dark, eerie radio disturbances, and a hidden cave, David begins to question whether or not he's really alone on the island. Suddenly, a female voice calls out over the otherwise silent radio - a stranger trying to reach David. Little does he know, his search for truth is about to descend into a much larger conspiracy..."

Brainstorm Media has revealed an official US trailer for a Swedish indie horror thriller titled Shadow Island, marking the feature directorial debut of Swedish filmmaker Johan Storm. This will be available on VOD to watch starting in September if anyone is curious. A meteorologist journeys to a deserted island to investigate his father’s mysterious death, where he experiences strange and mysterious occurrences. Confronted by strange lights in the dark, eerie radio disturbances, and a hidden cave, David begins to question whether or not he's really alone on the island. Suddenly, a female voice calls out to him - a stranger who is trying to reach David. The indie horror stars Johan L. Heinstedt, Hanne Mathisen Haga, Joel Wallón, and Magnus Roosmann. It hasn't played at many fests, though it still looks like a unique, atmospheric psychological thriller.

REinvent Scores Deals on ‘Chills’ Label Films, ‘Dark Windows,’ ‘Leave’ (Exclusive)

REinvent International sales has closed deals on genre titles from its Chills label, including “Dark Windows,” “Leave” and “Shadow Island,” ahead of the EFM.

“Dark Windows,” Alex Herron’s English-language horror thriller, has been sold to the Mena region (Enl / Empire Network Ltd) and Latin America (Gussi). The movie tells the story of teenagers involved in a car crash who decide to stay at a summerhouse in the U.S. countryside to work through their grief and start being stalked by a masked man. “Dark Windows” stars Annie Hamilton, Anna Bullard, Rory Alexander, Joel Saemundsson and Morten Holst.

The company has also closed key sales on “Leave,” Herron’s debut film. The horror thriller sold to Italy (Plaion), Germany (Splendid) and Latin America (Gussi). REinvent Kicks Off Pre-Sales on Hot New Scandi Drama ‘Outlier’ (Exclusive)

REinvent, the banner launched by TrustNordisk’s former CEO Rikke Ennis, has come on board “Outlier,” a female-led crime thriller set in Arctic wilderness amid the Sami community.

The eight-part series was created by Arne Berggren, the award-winning Norwegian novelist, playwright and rock musician, and Kristine Berg, the duo behind “The River” (“Elven), “The Dead Ones,” “Maria” and “Hotel Caesar,” Scandinavia’s longest running melodrama series.

REinvent will kick off pre-sales for “Outlier” at the Cannes virtual market with a teaser. The series, which is lensing in English, Norwegian and Sami, is expected to be delivered in September.

Produced by Shuuto Arctic, the series follows Maja Angell, an acclaimed young academic in London who specializes in profiling serial killers and aims to develop analytical tools to predict serious crimes.
