Though only a producer on the film Antlers, you can see and feel the fingerprints of the master of the macabre, Guillermo del Toro, all over it. A bleak, overcast Pacific Northwest backdrop is the kind of ambiance that he thrives in. He passes the reins to the very capable hands of Scott Cooper, and if you've seen Out of the Furnace or The Pale Blue Eye you know that he can bring a haunting feel to an unorthodox project in a relatively short career behind the camera. In Antlers, based on Nick Antoscas 2019 short story, "The Quiet Boy," which is now available on Peacock, he collaborates on his first horror movie with del Toro and two very versatile performers with established horror genre bona fides, Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons. As usual, Graham Greene is also steady as a wise man with a story to tell. They come together...

2024 has been a solid year for horror movies, specifically prequels to popular films in the genre. Prequels can be risky, but with the right creativity behind them, they can be as memorable as the originals. For example, The First Omen reignited admiration for a franchise that started in the 1970s. Meanwhile, the recent success of A Quiet Place: Day One proves that newer series still have the magic to get people into movie theaters.
Audiences and genre fans have gotten numerous acclaimed and well-loved horror movies over the past few years. With their imaginative ideas for the genre and elements worthy of more exploration, these films seem ready to receive an origin story. The X franchise has already taken that route with its prequel Pearl, which has become one of the best horror films of the 2020s. From Talk to Me to The Menu to Abigail, these horror movies deserve...

Director Scott Cooper's newest film Antlers delves deep into issues of abuse and trauma while terrorizing a small gloomy town with an ancient entity who has an insatiable taste for human flesh. The mythological creature is the wendigo or windigo, a cultural entity originating from diverse Indigenous populations from the northeastern seaboard and continental interior around the Great Lakes. The wendigo is a protector of the Earth, a spirit of winter, and a symbol of the dangers of greed and selfishness that exist in the world. Cooper attempts to connect the Indigenous mythos with an introduction, spoken in Ojibwe, that describes how Mother Earth is being destroyed by those who walk with greed in their hearts.
Antlers takes an Indigenous cultural cautionary tale and turns it into a brutal and gruesome horror movie. With guidance from Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro, Cooper and the team construct an impressive creature,...

Scott Cooper may be new to the horror genre, but Antlers still has his signature all over it. From forgotten towns to the mistreatment of indigenous peoples, Antlers revisits many of the elements and themes that have defined Cooper’s films since 2009’s Crazy Heart. The pandemic-delayed creature feature centers around a young boy (Jeremy T. Thomas) who’s forced to take care of his family after their life-altering encounter with the Wendigo, a mythological deer-like creature. Cooper’s first foray into horror was actually spearheaded by an Oscar winner who happens to know a thing or two about movie monsters.

Focus Features presents Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, a twisty psycho-thriller with a great soundtrack, as Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch goes wider, testing the appeal of a director whose films have been called the arthouse equivalent of Marvel.
Last Night, a time-bending genre tale, unspools on just over 3,000 screens — not exactly specialty but it’s from a writer-director who “can dip his toe into anything, a true specialty film, a more commercial film like Baby Driver, and now a psychological thriller that harkens back to Hitchcock, Brian De Palma and David Lynch,” said Focus distribution president Lisa Bunnell. It’s “more than a typical commercial slasher movie. It takes the thriller genre to a new level.”
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and screened at TIFF, where it resonated strongly with preview and festival audiences. Deadline’s review “called it a dark and delicious trip.

Upon first glance, one might be inclined to dismiss the new horror film Antlers as being simply something schlocky without even giving it a chance. That would be a catastrophic disservice to both the film and to the viewer as Scott Cooper’s film may be one of the more terrifying yet satisfying films of the genre since Robert Eggers’ The Witch (2016).
Keri Russell plays Julia Meadows, a middle-school teacher who happens to have a student (Jeremy T. Thomas) whose work has manifested in disturbingly graphic and macabre drawings, which leads Julia to explore the possibility of abuse happening at home. But, when she enlists the assistance of her brother, the town’s sheriff (Jesse Plemons), it becomes clear that there is more to the young boy’s artwork than mere neglect.

Before you begin to fill the candy bowls and light up the jack o’lantern, how about taking a terror trek to the “haunted” multiplex for a very modern take on the traditional “creature feature”? Yes, there’s a growling drooling mythical monster at the center of the story, though the town and its past are pretty scary without this “beastie”. Perhaps this is a result of the unique behind-the-scenes pairing of a producer known for his fantasy fright flicks and a director who’d helmed several films that deal with all-too-human horrors. Together this “mad move-scientist” duo have stitched together a shambling nightmare thing that threatens to impale several villagers on its razor-sharp Antlers.
This said nightmare actually begins during another overcast day, just outside a remote dying town in Oregon.

What happens when an ancient antlered monster, generational family trauma and middle school bullies all meet in the middle? Scott Cooper had a lot to say on the subject.
From the collaboration of director and co-writer Cooper – who directed “Crazy Heart” and “Hostiles” – and producer Guillermo del Toro, “Antlers” tells the tale of a middle school teacher and her sheriff brother as they become involved with her enigmatic student whose secrets lead to terrifying encounters with a dark ancestral creature. The film stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Green, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane and Amy Madigan.
From the very beginning through the bitter end, “Antlers” grapples with difficult topics including drug addiction and child abuse, and Cooper did not shy away from confronting such conversations head-on. Bolstered by the Native lore of the fear-mongering creature, the Wendigo, Cooper unpacked these difficult narratives.

Warner Bros.’ “Dune” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office in its debut weekend with £5.8 million ($8.1 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

Mess with imposing figures in the mythical lore of the ancient Native American tribes at your great peril —that would seem to be the message of Antlers, a classy horror outing that’s perceptively cast and particularly attentive to the dead-end realities of a once-prosperous Oregon mining town.
Searchlight no doubt will trumpet the involvement of executive producer Guillermo del Toro as much as possible — and his influence is palpable — but the prevailing mood of director Scott Cooper’s latest is somber in the way it reflects the sorry state of things for the working class in places that time has passed by. The film was the closing-night attraction at the American Cinematheque’s Beyond Fest in Los Angeles.

As movie titles go, “Antlers” seems ready-made for one of two holidays — either Christmas or Halloween — and it’s kind of a shame to see it squandered on the latter. Now what is some enterprising filmmaker supposed to call his revisionist Rudolph story when the time comes? The name’s a somewhat less obvious fit for director Scott Cooper’s somber, character-centric stab at supernatural horror, although it makes sense once you realize that this slow-burn, Oregon-set monster movie is centered on the Native American “wendigo” legend, whereby an evil spirit possesses people and transforms them into deadly elk-horned creatures with an appetite for human flesh.
Cooper has dabbled in many a genre across his five-movie directing career, although there’s been a consistent darkness to it all that puts horror squarely in his wheelhouse. Executed with style and perhaps a bit too much self-importance, his work has traditionally focused...

Scott Cooper is a filmmaker who seems primarily driven by following the aftermath. In a growing filmography marked by vengeance and regret and missed chances, one common thread is that his movies are built on the way the people within them respond to the lives they’ve been dealt. Those movies also tend to play out with a certain level of unsparing brutality. Mothers watch their children murdered and brothers are slowly robbed of everything until revenge becomes the only way out. This all makes Cooper a curious candidate to helm a story like “Antlers,” a tale where a very real and tangible human story butts up against an otherworldly spiritual force.
At first, branching out into this new territory proves fruitful in “Antlers,” particularly in the film’s opening moments. A father, leaving his son in a pickup truck waiting outside, heads into his job at a local Oregon mine.

Often we refer to the concept of family as the ties that bind, and for good reason. Because sometimes, our family can be the very thing in our lives that is either holding us down or they can keep us connected to some type of trauma that continues to haunt our very existence. That’s the primary theme that ripples throughout Scott Cooper’s Antlers, a harrowing, gut-punch creature feature that is shockingly bleak at times and features brilliant performances from Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, and the precocious Jeremy T. Thomas, who is at the center of Antler’s mystery and is so heartbreakingly great in this.

Scott Cooper’s horror thriller “Antlers” is finally ready to trot.
The Searchlight Pictures release, delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, will bow as the closing night film of the annual Beyond Fest. After, it will continue rolling out at global genre festivals, including Fantastic Fest, the Telluride Horror Show and Sitges Film Festival.
The tour will conclude with a domestic theatrical release on Oct. 29.
“I made ‘Antlers’ as a communal theatrical experience for cinema lovers,” said director and co-writer Cooper. “I can’t think of a more apt series of screenings to launch our film before audiences across the globe — audiences whom I hope share an appreciation for horror films with a different perspective on our everyday fears and ancestral mythology.”
Cooper, whose credits include “Hostiles” and “Crazy Heart,” helms the pic, produced by Guillermo del Toro, David S. Goyer (“The Night House”) and J. Miles Dale of the upcoming “Nightmare Alley.

Guillermo del Toro's long awaited Nightmare Alley is set to open in theaters this December. In addition, Antlers, which del Toro produced, will finally be released in October. Nightmare Alley marks the first time that del Toro has been behind the camera since 2017's Academy Award winning The Shape of Water, and it will see a similar rollout. The 2017 movie also opened in December, after premiering at the fall festivals. It's unclear if the director's upcoming movie will premiere at the 2021 fall festivals, but it seems likely Searchlight will do the same approach, as long as they are able to safely.
As of this writing, Searchlight has chosen Nightmare Alley to open in theaters December 3rd. The movie, which stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn, was supposed to open in 2020, but the public health crisis-related delays put a stop to that.

Searchlight Pictures has updated its 2021 release calendar, dating Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” for December 3. The date puts del Toro’s latest in the thick of the 2021-2022 awards season. Searchlight appears to be following the same release plan it gave del Toro’s last movie, “The Shape of Water,” which started its U.S. theatrical rollout on the first weekend of December. “The Shape of Water” debuted at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion, and it seems likely “Nightmare Alley” will show up on the fall film festival circuit.
Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is adapted by the filmmaker, and film critic Kim Morgan, from the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name. The ensemble cast includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn. Searchlight Pictures, ever the believer in theatrical, has dated four releases for 2021.
Their Sundance horror pickup The Night House will turn its lights on July 16. The David Bruckner directed titles which Searchlight shelled out a reported $12M for last January follows a widow (Rebecca Hall) who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.
Their Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker televangelist biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye will debut on Sept. 24. The pic, directed by Michael Showalter and written by Abe Sylvia, takes an intimate look at the rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.

With the restructuring of Searchlight and Covid kicking around the release date, the only reason why we think Antlers might break into the Sundance line-up has to do with the film’s current release date of February 19th. Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Greene and Scott Haze star in a project that went into production in October off 2019 in Vancouver. This is Scott Cooper‘s fifth feature after a productive 2009’s Crazy Heart, 2013’s Out of the Furnace, 2015’s Black Mass and 2017’s Hostiles.

Fox Searchlight has just released the final trailer for Antlers. This is the latest offering from Guillermo del Toro, who serves as a producer on the project. Scott Cooper is in the director's chair for what looks to be one crazy dose of creature-based horror. Unlike the other trailers that were playing things a bit coy, this one gives us a really good look at del Toro's latest monster, and it's the stuff nightmares are made of.
The Antlers trailer kicks off with some intriguing voiceover discussing the nature of storytelling. Specifically, myths and legends. While that's happening, we see a little boy walking around in the woods before he comes upon an old house where some truly unsettling craziness goes down. Things then progress as a body, or at least part of a body, is found and local authorities scramble to figure out what exactly could have done this.

A new trailer has been unleashed for producer Guillermo del Toro and director Scott Cooper’s upcoming horror film Antlers. This thing is filled with gruesome and disturbing new footage that horror fans are going to love!
This is a crazy and messed up looking film and it’s an adaptation of a short story, The Quiet Boy, from Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca. The film stars Keri Russell as a school teacher in a small-town who begins to suspect something is seriously wrong with one of her young students. Here’s the brief plot summary that was shared:

Fox Searchlight has dropped the latest trailer for Antlers. While the first Antlers trailer set the cryptic story in motion, the new footage fills in the blanks. And those blanks may be something that horror fans are never able to scrub from their memory. Keri Russell takes the lead in the movie, but the new footage is pretty much dialogue-free and it speaks for itself. This is going to be a very interesting and grim story to unfold on the big screen.
In Antlers, a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, discover that a young student (Jeremy T. Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film Antlers stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons as a small town plagued by a mysterious monster.
Antlers will showcase an intriguing spin on horror film conventions, mixing the old “a boy and his monster” fantasy trope of Pete’s Dragon and Where the Wild Things Are with a voraciously deadly deer twist.
Guillermo del Toro serves as a producer for Antlers; a duty that, a few years back, saw him appoint Black Mass director Scott Cooper, who worked off a script that he co-wrote with C. Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca, adapting Antosca’s short story, The Quiet Boy. David Goyer and J. Miles Dale also serve as producers.
Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons headline here, joined by Jeremy T. Thomas, who plays a small-town kid with the most problematic secret buddy ever.
