Broadcast television is in the middle of a major surge, especially over on CBS, where a bunch of United States viewers have been treated to hits like "Elsbeth" and the new version of "Matlock." Streaming has brought a wealth of choice, but the general cost of maintaining a bunch of subscriptions, and the relative ease of turning on the TV for predictable programming, has seen some people flocking back to the big four networks. In spite of this renewed interest in broadcast television from people who might have cut the cord last decade, CBS has been putting a bunch of shows out to pasture, and "The Neighborhood," starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, was one of the unlucky victims this year. If that wasn't bad enough, a planned spin-off for "The Neighborhood," focusing on the characters Marty and Malcolm, also got the boot recently.

The Neighborhood is saving the best for the very last. The CBS sitcom recently wrapped Season 7, adding a bold bow to it with the finale, setting up a fresh chapter for fan-favorite brothers Marty (Marcel Spears) and Malcolm Butler (Sheaun McKinney). The second part of the finale, titled “Welcome to Venice,” was originally designed as a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off centered on the brothers. While CBS ultimately shelved those plans, fans will still get to see more of Malcolm and Marty as both characters are set to return as series regulars in The Neighborhood Season 8, which will serve as the final season of the long-running sitcom. Though Season 7 has just ended, star and executive producer Cedric the Entertainer already has his eyes on which actors he'll bring along for the final rodeo.

While CBS has unfortunately cancelled the second spin-off of The Neighborhood, which was to center on Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Marcel Spears), Cedric the Entertainer comes bearing amazing news for die-hard fans of the brotherly duo. The series star confirmed via an interview with TV Line that the scrapped follow-up will be worked into Season 8 of The Neighborhood, meaning that the events of the Season 7 finale will not be ignored since it also served as the backdoor pilot for the spin-off.
Cedric, who co-wrote the backdoor pilot, mentioned that the next season of the beloved sitcom will incorporate major parts of Malcolm’s new life in Venice. And even without a spin-off, The Neighborhood team, who “love the idea that Malcolm has moved there,” still “wanted to [make] this transition and show the growth of the Fuse Box, which is why we have Marty going back and forth [from Pasadena to Venice].”

Cedric The Entertainer on ‘The Neighborhood’ Season 8 Hopes, Canceled Spinoff & Possible Guest Stars
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Neighborhood Season 7 finale, “Welcome to Pomp and Circumstance” and “Welcome to Venice.”] Welcome to the block, welcome to a new neighborhood! The Neighborhood delivered a surprising two-part Season 7 finale, where Marty (Marcel Spears) and Malcolm Butler (Sheaun McKinney) moved from their house down the block to a new house in Venice Beach, California, so Malcolm could pursue his writing career. This storyline was supposed to set up the spinoff that would feature Marty and Malcolm as the main characters, but in April, it was sadly announced it would not be moving forward. The last three episodes of the season were filled with guest stars, including Garrett Morris, Justin Long, and Hunter King, heartfelt moments, and some unfigured-out feelings. With only one season left, The Neighborhood will wrap up everyone’s stories in a handful of episodes. TV Insider spoke with Cedric The Entertainer, who plays Calvin Butler on the sitcom,...

The Neighborhood’s penultimate season ends in just a few days with the finale airing on Monday, May 5. Fans of The Neighborhood were left disappointed when CBS confirmed that the popular sitcom would end with Season 8. Unfortunately, the proposed spinoff will not be moving forward either.
However, Cedric the Entertainer, who stars as Calvin Butler in the series, told TV Line that he wasn't too surprised by the news. "I do recognize that we're in a very difficult time as far as television goes," he said. "We were excited about doing this. We created the idea, and we intentionally tried to use an episode of The Neighborhood that we had in order to shoot it."
The actor went on to explain the state of television in 2025, saying that despite having an interesting premise, broadcast networks are simply "not doing a lot of pilots [anymore]. They're not spending a lot of money. They're just kind of work-shopping ideas. We thought we did a great job, but ultimately there wasn't enough...

The Neighborhood won’t be expanding its boundaries any further, at least not for now. Two spin-offs of the long-running sitcom were in development, including one centered on a new character named Francois, a.k.a. Crutch, and another focused on fan-favorite brothers Marty and Malcolm Butler. The former, which previously cast Tracy Morgan as its titular lead, has already been ordered to series at Paramount+. Unfortunately, the latter did not receive the same fate, as CBS has officially announced it will not be moving forward with the project. The news comes as the network continues to apply finishing touches to its programming lineup for the 2025–2026 TV season, which will include The Neighborhood Season 8, announced as the final outing for the beloved sitcom.

Fans of Titus Welliver and his recent role in Bosch: Legacy believed they were about to find a replacement with a CBS spinoff of another popular crime drama, The Equalizer. However, amid a wave of cancelations at the network, it seems that the new series will not be moving ahead despite Welliver’s character, Hudson Reed, making his appearance in a backdoor pilot in the current series on The Equalizer over the weekend.
The spinoff would have paired Welliver’s Reed with Juani Feliz as Samantha Reed, Hudson’s daughter. Welliver’s character was described as “a former top CIA operative with a dark secret who is connected to Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) by an old mentor.” Samantha Reed was “trained by her father to be a weapons expert, skilled martial artist and true chameleon all while hiding a mysterious past.”
