Real-life boxer Kali Reis is vulnerable, frightening and relentlessly physical as the fictional Kaylee, hunting for her missing younger sister

Real-life boxing champion Kali Reis makes an indelible impression here as both the lead actor and the co-writer of this dark, unsettling if slightly predictable tale of revenge, violence and sex trafficking, directed and co-written by Josef Kubota Wladyka. Sure, the protagonist she plays goes by the not-dissimilar Kaylee or Ko, is also a boxer and has the same half-Native American, half-Cape Verdean ethnic background as Reis. But it takes proper acting talent, boosted by strong direction from Wladyka, to pull the film along the way Reis does. She’s vulnerable, frightening and relentlessly physical.

Crimes against Indigenous people, especially Indigenous women, rarely get mainstream attention, a cruel reality of which “Catch the Fair One” is painfully aware.

Crafted by award-winning filmmaker Josef Kubota Wladyka (“Manos Sucias”) and his collaborator and star Kali Reis, herself a biracial Indigenous woman, “Catch the Fair One” is highly personal and extremely intentional in bringing awareness to the crisis of missing Indigenous girls and its link to human trafficking.

Though billed as a thriller, “Catch the Fair One” feels more pressing and urgent than what Hollywood usually produces within this genre. Former championship boxer K.O. (Reis), driven by the marginalization and invisibility imposed by the dominant society, makes the rash and foolhardy decision to go undercover to find her younger sister Weeta (Mainaku Borrero), who has been missing for some time.

Exclusive: Memento International has boarded international sales rights to Tribeca Film Festival thriller Catch The Fair One, Oscar-nominated producer Mollye Asher’s follow-up to Nomadland.

The movie, about a former champion boxer who embarks on the fight of her life when she goes in search of her missing sister, marks the acting debut of real-life boxer, Kali “Ko” Reis, the first Native American woman to win a major world title. Reis is the current Wba Super Lightweight World Champion and fought in the first televised women’s bout on HBO.

As announced by Tribeca yesterday, the film will get its world premiere in the festival’s U.S. narrative competition. Above is a first look image from the movie.
