We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we've just learned of a new show cancellation. This teen series was loved by many, but unfortunately, it won't be returning for another season. Netflix has reportedly canceled the teen drama Surviving Summer. There will not be a Surviving Summer season 3 like many had hoped.
Are we shocked by this news? Honestly, not all. The second season was released on Netflix back in September 2023. That was over a year ago, and we hadn't heard a peep about the show's future until recently. The news came from one of the stars of the show. Liliana Bowrey, who played the role of Poppy in the teen series, shared a video on TikTok of her surfing back in December 2024. When a fan asked in the comments about the release of Surviving Summer season 3, Bowrey responded with the disappointing news that there wouldn't be one,...

Now, we're all eagerly awaiting the release of My Life with the Walter Boys season 2, doing our best to remain patient.
The heartfelt teen show revolves around Jackie Howard, a teen girl who is forced to relocate to a rural Colorado town to live with her late mother’s best friend and her family after her parents tragically pass away in a car accident. While trying her best to adjust to her new surroundings, she finds herself falling for two brothers, Alex and Cole Walter.
An official release date for the second season hasn't been announced yet, but it's been confirmed to come out sometime in 2025. That means we need something to do to keep us busy while we wait.

The world of The Imaginary is as lush and enchanting as you’d expect if you’re familiar with the artists behind the onscreen magic. It’s the second feature film from Studio Ponoc, an animation house led by Studio Ghibli alums. And much like their debut feature, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, The Imaginary is a deluge of cinematic delights and confections supported by a touching story that leaves you with a fuller heart than you had going in.
The movie is based on a novel by A.F. Harrold and centers on Rudger (voiced in the English dub by Louie Rudge-Buchanan), the three months, three weeks, and three days-old imaginary friend of Amanda (Evie Kiszel). Together they go on fantastical adventures in dreamed-up worlds filled with dragons, floating castles, hard-working earth giants, and even entire oceans sloshing around inside see-through whales.

Teen series like Surviving Summer feature young adults navigating competitive sports, friendships, and personal growth. Shows like Spinning Out and Summertime also delve into the world of young athletes overcoming obstacles. Shared themes of resilience, friendship, and self-discovery run through series like All American, Dive Club, and Outer Banks.
Netflix's Surviving Summer had a strong debut and earned a second season, but after watching those 18 episodes, fans might be looking for other shows like Surviving Summer. The teen series features Sky Katz from Raven's Home as Summer Torres, a delinquent skateboarder from New York City who is sent to a small town in Australia to stay with family friends. There, she befriends a talented group of surfers. She becomes interested in surfing and, while still rebellious, begins to understand that her impulsivity might not always be the way to go.

Studio Ghibli's influence continues through Studio Ponoc's The Imaginary, a visually stunning film with a premise similar to Ghibli's works. The film explores the power of a child's imagination, featuring a boy named Rudger and his adventures with fantastical creatures. The Imaginary offers mesmerizing animation and captivating storytelling, appealing to both kids and adults and setting a high standard for future collaborations between Netflix and Studio Ponoc.
Studio Ghibli has earned a name for itself by creating numerous unique anime films helmed by brilliant filmmakers such as Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. The studio's debut film (of sorts), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, was a huge box office hit in 1984, but it was only the beginning of what Studio Ghibli would accomplish in the years to come.

In the world of The Imaginary (Yaneura no Rajâ), every child has a secret friend, an invisible being with whom they create fictional scenarios and share their deepest secrets. For Amanda (voiced in the English-language version by Evie Kiszel ), the protagonist of this sweet but sprawling Studio Ponoc film, that person is a sprightly and protective blond being named Rudger (Louie Rudge-Buchanan). When Amanda comes home from school, they begin their adventures, flying across a grassy expanse populated by an industrious giant and a chatty squirrel or riding a musk ox through a snowy tundra. In the words of Rudger, “Amanda always imagines the most splendid worlds.”

When Rudger arrives alone at "The Town of Imaginaries" – where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work – he faces a mysterious threat. "Surviving Summer" season 2 was filmed in various beach locations in Australia, including Anglesea, Point Roadknight Beach, Bells Beach, Jan Juc Beach, as well as Byron Bay and Kingscliff in New South Wales. Anglesea served as the main setting for the fictional town of Shorehaven in the series, which is located on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. The characters in "Surviving Summer" are heavily involved in surfing, and the show's focus on the sport sets it apart from other teen dramas. While some of the surfing scenes are performed by professionals, most of the actors in the show do their own surfing, adding authenticity to the series. Lilliana Bowrey, who plays the character Poppy, is a professional surfer in real life, and her debut as an actor in the Netflix series has been a challenging but rewarding experience.

“I loved how could just tell the vibe [with Surviving Summer] was so Australian with the surfing and the lingo,” she said.
“Having just come from Byron, where I had been experiencing the surf culture, it was very cool to see it in a television show and it felt very relatable.
