Best Movies Coming to Arrow in July 2023
Image
Many of us rely heavily on streaming services to watch the latest releases as well as memorable films from the 2000s. However, the evolution of the cinema age has always been prior to the 1990s, when CGI played a minimal role, rendering the efforts of films indescribable. While many streaming platforms, such as Hulu, often bring old classics to the audiences, it still feels somewhat lacking, which is where Arrow comes in.

Arrow Films is a film distributor based in England that has grown tremendously since its inception in 1991, mainly specializing in horror and classic films. As it continues to expand its catalog, it adds new movies every month, and July is no exception. Recently, Arrow Films released its cutting-edge cult cinema lineup for this month, which ranges from Bruce Lee's most influential films to mafia classics worth rewatching, and we're here to give you a rundown on the best ones from the schedule.

Lake Michigan Monster Review: A Drugged-out Nautical Adventure with 50s Monster Movie Madness
Image
Every now and then a thoroughly unique and magnificently odd piece of filmmaking comes along that's not quite classifiable, yet so refreshingly weird it can't help but find its audience. Lake Michigan Monster, a new release from Arrow Video, is just that kind of experience. Writer/director/star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews is the warped comedic mind behind this Audience Award winner at 2019's Fantasia Film Festival, which is above all else an absurdist comedy with a little 50s monster movie splashed in. It's a drugged-out, black and white nautical adventure, shot on an admirably tiny budget, that watches like a lengthy sketch, and an inspired one at that. Littered with dry wit, slapstick bits, caricaturistic characters, kooky edits, and brief homages to classic B horror, Lake Michigan Monster is an earnestly funny, one-of-a-kind wild joy to watch.

Lake Michigan Monster tells the story of Seafield a bourbon-drinking, self-absorbed, and...

Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
Official Trailer for B&w Comedy Adventure 'Lake Michigan Monster'
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
"The authorities say: 'sea monsters aren't real.'" But we know they are! Arrow Video has released an official trailer for an intriguing indie comedy adventure horror genre mashup titled Lake Michigan Monster, from a filmmaker named Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, who also stars in this as the Captain. "All aboard! The combined spirits of H.P. Lovecraft, early Sam Raimi and Mystery Science Theater 3000 inhabit this action-packed tale of nautical derring-do and monster mayhem – winner of the Audience Award for Best International Feature at the 2019 Fantasia Film Festival." An eccentric ship captain and a crew of specialists plot revenge against the most mysterious creature of the deep -- the Lake Michigan Monster. Presented in "glorious" black & white. Starring Ryland as Seafield, with Erick West, Beulah Peters, Daniel Long, and Wayne Tews. This looks cool! I always enjoy these funky, strange, clever genre films exploring wacky concepts. This also looks like...

Fantasia 2019: ‘Lake Michigan Monster’ Review
Stars: Daniel Long, Beulah Peters, Ryland Tews, Wayne Tews, Erick West | Written by Ryland Tews, Mike Cheslik | Directed by Ryland Brickson Cole Tews

Lake Michigan Monster is a title that screams SyFy Original to sit alongside Sharknado and Lavantula. Although there are some similarities between this and those ridiculous (and mostly fun) movies, this film does offer up plenty of surprises and fresh ideas. It’s like a parody of the forties and fifties monster B-movies, even completely shot in black and white. And the writer/director/star of the movie Ryland Brickson Cole Tews is clearly a fan of these, he just adds in a whole lot of crazy comedy.

Lake Michigan Monster isn’t a movie that takes itself very seriously, it knows exactly what type of film it is. The plot is flimsy, there’s not a whole lot to it but that’s fine. A sea...
