Sony Pictures to Remake Japanese Box Office Hit ‘366 Days’ (Exclusive)
Image
Sony’s Columbia Pictures has secured the rights to remake “366 Days,” the Japanese romantic drama that has taken the box office by storm, for English-speaking audiences.

Co-produced and co-distributed by Shochiku and Sony Pictures Japan, the film has been a major hit locally since its Jan. 10 release. Propelled by strong word-of-mouth, “366 Days” climbed to No. 1 in total admissions by its fourth weekend and has since become the highest-grossing local film produced by a Hollywood studio in Japan based on an original screenplay. The film has grossed more than $11 million.

Directed by Takehiko Shinjo with a screenplay by Kaho Fukuda, “366 Days” draws inspiration from the popular Japanese band Hy’s beloved song of the same name. Columbia’s Peter Kang is overseeing the remake on behalf of the studio.

The film follows Minato Makiya, played by Eiji Akaso (“Pending Train”), a high school senior in Okinawa who falls...

6 comedy horror movies like Bodies Bodies Bodies to watch on Netflix
Image
Fans of the comedy horror Bodies Bodies Bodies will be disappointed to learn that the movie will leave Netflix on Sept. 19, 2024. But the good news is that a long list of horror comedies is available on the streaming service to fill the void. And don't miss this year's Netflix & Chills lineup.

Bodies Bodies Bodies and other horror comedies are a unique subgenre of horror that mixes slasher elements with absurd comedic ones. Mixing comedy with horror is nothing new, as Edgar Allan Poe and other writers often combined the two in their works.

Bride of Chucky

Bride of Chucky is the fourth installment of the Child's Play franchise, written by creator Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu, also known for Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Series Review: Look at Me Mukai-kun (2023) by Shogo Kusano
Image
by Sophia Ng

“Though handsome and successful, Satoru Mukai suddenly realises he's been single for ten whole years and has no idea how to initiate a new relationship,” reads the series synopsis on Netflix. While the premise doesn't sound particularly compelling, Eiji Akaso as the leading man is reason enough to give it a chance. Coming fresh off recent shows like TBS's “Pending Train”, and “Ishiko and Haneo: You're Suing Me?”, Akaso brings his signature boyish good looks and endearing awkward tics to the character of Satoru Mukai, an office worker whose impending 33rd birthday forces him to face the harsh reality that his decade-long hiatus from the dating scene has cost him the happy married life and adorable children the rest of his peers all seem to have.

Zom 100: Bucket List Of The Dead 2 - If Netflix's Breakout Manga Adaptation Will Get A Sequel & Everything We Know
Image
Despite the success of the first film, a sequel for Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead has not been confirmed by Netflix yet. The cast for a potential sequel would likely include the three main characters, as well as other survivors from the first film. With a sprawling manga series to draw from, there is plenty of content left for a potential Zom 100 sequel to explore, and it could continue the story of Akira and his friends in the post-apocalyptic world.

Netflix's adaptation of Haro Aso's manga series Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead turned out to be a surprise hit for the streaming giant, so is there any Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead 2 news coming down the pipeline? While Aso's sprawling series has been canonized in 14 tankōbon volumes, the Netflix movie tells a more succinct story in its roughly 2-hour runtime. With a...

Zom 100 Live-Action Movie's 15 Biggest Changes To The Bucket List Of The Dead Anime & Manga
Image
Where to Watch Powered by

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for the Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead live-action movie and the manga.

Netflix's Zom 100 movie covers the first 11 chapters of the manga and features several key differences in the story, including changes to the opening sequence and Akira's backstory. The live-action adaptation changes Zom 100's chronology. For example, it introduces Kencho earlier in the story, before the zombie outbreak. Akira's bucket list has fewer items in the movie compared to the manga, and the items themselves differ between the two versions.

There are several differences between Netflix’s Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead live-action movie and the Zom 100 manga, which recently received an anime adaptation as well. Less than a month after the Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead anime premiered, the 2018 manga by Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata now has a live-action adaptation.

‘Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead’ Review – A Condensed But Fun Live-Action Adaptation of the Manga
Image
As unrealistic as zombie apocalypses are, the main character in Netflix’s movie 100 Zom: Bucket List of the Dead is easy to relate to. At the start of this live-action adaptation of Haro Asō’s manga, Akira Tendō (Eiji Akaso) is annoyingly chipper as he starts his new job. Soon enough, though, reality hits Akira like a bullet train, and he becomes yet another exploited employee at his workplace. While his misery appears to be eternal, Akira is eventually given a second chance at life as a zombie virus overwhelms the world.

Upon learning of mankind’s fate, one caused by a mysterious and contagious virus, Akira is ecstatic. He doesn’t have to go to work anymore now that most everyone is either dead or zombified. As inappropriate as his first reaction seems, the story prefaces the chaos with enough evidence of why someone like Akira would rejoice in such a dire situation.

Akira Tendo In ‘Zom 100: Bucket List Of The Dead,’ Explained: What Happens To Eiji Akaso’s Character?
Image
Zombie movies are not new to our sensibilities. Anyone planning on making a zombie flick is under a great deal of pressure to avoid the trodden path and yet give the thrills expected with this subgenre of horror comedy. Yusuke Ishida’s Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead tries to showcase its own take on the zombie apocalypse through the compelling metaphor of corporate slavery.

The story of Zom 100 is told as an adventure tale experienced by a freshly employed Akira Tendo. Akira thinks that as a new member of the workforce, he will get to experience an exciting life, but he soon understands that the reality is completely different. The unending working hours, the overtime, and the authoritarian leaders all ensure that Akira loses his spirit entirely, until one day, it is reawakened by a zombie apocalypse, and he resolves to check everything off his bucket list. The...

‘The Great Yokai War: Guardians’ Review: Prolific Japanese Filmmaker Takashi Miike Gets His Family-Friendly Groove on With a Fabulous Fantasy Adventure
Image
A cavalcade of creatures from Japanese folklore come alive in “The Great Yokai War: Guardian,” a hugely enjoyable fantasy-adventure directed by the famously prolific and supremely versatile Takashi Miike. Starring amazingly talented child actors Kokoro Terada and Rei Inomata as brothers summonsed by peace-loving spirits to stop an angry demon from engaging in the time-honored Japanese monster movie tradition of destroying Tokyo, this smashing piece of young-adult entertainment should be a big hit in Japan, where it’s sure to get plenty of love from older adults as well. With its standout visuals and uplifting messages about trust, friendship and acceptance, “Guardians” should attract the interest of specialized overseas distributors following its international premiere as the closing-night attraction of Fantasia 2021.

Miike is most closely associated with extremely violent crime stories such as “Audition” and blood-soaked costume action-thrillers like “Blade of the Immortal.” Less well known outside Japan are his family-friendly hits such as “Ninja Kids!
