Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna in House of Games (1987)
Would you like to play a game? No. Not Saw. I’m talking about the House of Games, with Viola Davis and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the feature’s star players. A24's long-awaited take on The Backrooms may have finally found its cast
Image
A film adaptation of the viral found-footage films created by YouTuber Kane Parsons was announced to be in development at A24 back in 2023, with minimal updates since. But it looks like A24 is finally preparing to move full steam ahead with the project as a new report from Deadline suggests casting is underway. According to the outlet, The Penguin star Cristin Milioti and Chiwetel Ejiofor (who was so very charming in the recent Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy) are in talks to co-star.

Reps for A24 have declined to comment on the news, so it sounds like if the two stars are circling these roles then the deals have not yet been signed or confirmed. Parsons will direct the film from a script by Roberto Patino. A24 is adapting alongside James Wan's Atomic Monster banner, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps.

The Backrooms remains a mysterious project for the studio...

'Wicked' Star Cynthia Erivo Joins New Samurai Action Thriller 'Karoshi'
Image
Wicked star Cynthia Erivo is swapping the whimsical world of Oz for a role in the slightly less colorful corporate sector, as she has boarded Karoshi, a new samurai action thriller from the producers of John Wick. She is in good company on the cast, as Past Lives breakout Teo Yoo and 1923 actress Isabel May have also joined the upcoming Lionsgate feature, though specifics about their roles are seemingly being kept under lock and key in a confidential filing cabinet for now.

According to Deadline, the movie is described as "a corporate thriller with a samurai twist," which will be scripted and directed by Takashi Doscher, who helmed the 2019 post-apocalyptic romance Only. Not much more is known about the story at this time, though it's worth noting that the translated meaning of the Japanese word "karoshi" is "death from overwork" and is used to describe sudden fatalities related to occupational exhaustion,...

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked (2024)
Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has joined Karoshi, a ‘corporate action thriller with a samurai twist’. Count us in.

Cynthia Erivo’s movie star powers have reached a new level through the global success of last year’s Wicked. And with that film’s second part due to arrive later this year, Erivo has been decidedly busy both as an actor and on other projects.

This year alone she’s launched a new single, has a new album coming, and she’s playing the Messiah himself in the Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar this summer. She’s also appearing in season two of Poker Face.

That’s quite the year, not least because according to Deadline, Erivo has booked in another leading turn in Lionsgate’s Karoshi, the latest effort (in an increasingly long line) where the studio looks to replicate the success of its John Wick series. Still,...

'Children of Blood and Bone' Adaptation Gets Major Update at Paramount
Image
Filming has officially begun for Children of Blood and Bone, an adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's young adult fantasy book of the same name. Arguably one of the most anticipated fantasy projects in recent memory, the movie is adapted from the first book in a trilogy collectively known as Legacy of Orïsha. Children of Blood and Bone, the first book in the series, took the book community by storm when it was released in 2018, spending several weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Four years later, Paramount beat out competitors in a fierce bidding battle for its rights, announcing its feature adaptation. A release date two years from now is already in place, but with production now beginning relatively early, it gives reason to believe that the film could hit the screens sooner than expected.

Many of the best fantasy books of the last ten years have the potential to join the fantasy canon and be remembered for years to come, making it an exciting time to be a fan of speculative fiction. It's difficult to determine what exactly makes a novel worthy of becoming a classic,...

A lot of well-known fantasy fiction is inspired by Western Europe, but there are many great books that draw inspiration from elsewhere. Books like The Poppy War, Jade City, and Daughter of the Moon Goddess offer perspectives based on Eastern history and culture. These modern additions to the fantasy genre provide rich, detailed storytelling while incorporating elements of history and mythology into their world-building.

Many well-known fantasy narratives draw inspiration from Western Europe, but there are some truly great books that pull their settings and lore from other parts of the world. As a genre, fantasy can go almost anywhere it wants to but most authors use the real world to create their fictional ones. And because classics like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia books are heavily inspired by Western Europe, many modern fantasy novels continue to utilize the landscape, politics,...

Gina Prince-Bythewood Directing Children Of Blood And Bone
Image
There is movement for Paramount's plan to turn Tomi Adeyemi‘s novel Children Of Blood And Bone into film. According to Deadline, :a[The Old Guard]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-old-guard/' } and :a[The Woman King]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-woman-king/' } director Gina Prince-Bythewood is jumping aboard to direct.

Adeyemi‘s book is set in a fantasy realm where, 11 years ago, Zelie and Tzain lost their mother, and all of Orisha lost magic. The maji were rounded up and slaughtered by King Saran’s orders, and the diviners became second-class citizens, oppressed so they would never rise up again.

But all of that changes when a scroll turns up that has the ability to grant magic to the diviners, changing them into maji. The answer becomes clear to Zelie: they must bring magic back.

For Amari, the princess, the path is less clear. Though...

Children Of Blood & Bone: Upcoming Fantasy Movie Has 1 Big Thing To Fix From The Book
Image
Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt the bestselling YA novel Children of Blood & Bone into a three-movie deal, with the author Tomi Adeyemi involved in the project. The book's story, which tackles themes of race, discrimination, and abuse of power, has drawn comparisons to the Hunger Games series and is considered a groundbreaking magical allegory of the Black experience. By focusing on Zélie's unique qualities and motivations, the movie can differentiate her from other YA fantasy heroes and create a more compelling narrative.

The best-selling YA novel Children of Blood & Bone is reportedly in the process of being adapted to screen, but this upcoming movie will have to fix one big Zélie problem. Paramount Pictures has reportedly acquired the rights to a three-movie deal for Children of Blood & Bone,...
